Reasonably engaging look at the conditions of The Grapes of Wrath still existing in 1960, focusing on families working in harvest fields for less than a living wage, unable to settle down and get their kids a decent education. The kids themselves are the most intriguing here with their aspirations for the future, and while all the focus on the adults feels like a bit of a misstep, the documentary makes a convincing argument for something not being right.

126-133. Human Planet (2011)
Another of BBC's Planet Earth-esque miniseries, this one focuses on various people and cultures around the globe. Like the others, it's a beautifully shot series and also like the others, I actually liked the Making Of sections more than the actual episodes. I kinda felt bad for that guy they made walk back and forth across that rope bridge during monsoon season while they tried to get the shot. He didn't seem to care too much though.

Image
134. And Everything Is Going Fine (2010)
This is a doc/clip show retrospective on Spaulding Gray from Steven Soderbergh. Honestly though, it's not terribly essential. You can find out all about Gray's upbringing and his motivations for what he does in his own monologues which are much more engaging to watch in full than in the short segments featured here.

Image
135. Just Desserts: The Making of 'Creepshow' (2007)
A solid 90-minute behind-the-scenes doc on Creepshow with interviews with all the major players including Romero, King, Savini, many of the crew and several of the actors involved like Ed Harris, Andrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins and Bingo O' Malley.

Image
136. Cropsey (2009)
What seems to start as a doc exploring a local urban legend reveals itself to be a true crime doc on a child kidnapping murderer trial. It's interesting as far as true crime docs go and is muddy enough to wonder what truly happened even though the trial had a definitive verdict by the end. Although I do feel like the Cropsey legend was a kind of bait-and-switch tactic though.

12. Hitchcock/Truffaut (2012)
Disappointing. This is a documentary dedicated to a book, which leaves the question of what it offers that the book does not. The answer is very little. Recordings of the conversations between Hitchcock and Truffaut substitute for the book's text, and clips from their movies substitute for the book's still images. The only addition is some bland comments from an array of well-known directors. If hearing the likes of Arnaud Desplechin and Martin Scorsese say things like "Hitchcock had a strong visual sense" is interesting, this if the movie for you. Otherwise, everyone would be better off reading the book and seeing Hitchcock's movies.

13. Workingman's Death (2005)
According to its own title card, this movie offers a portrait of work in the 21st century in five chapters, which is not quite true. The fifth chapter is a minor one, and there's also a very brief but effective epilogue. The bulk of the movie, though gives us 25-30 minute segments on workers in Ukraine (coal miners), Indonesia (sulfur miners), Nigeria (butchers), and Pakistan (shipbreakers). The key, for me, is the title. Though the serious physical risk of the work is emphasized in three of the four segments, we don't actually see any injuries or harm. So what is the "death" of the title? I suppose it could refer to the eventual obsolescence of these jobs in a post-industrial future, a future hinted at in the epilogue which is set in a former German factory that has been repurposed as a park. But I think the title actually refers to the jobs themselves, each of which has to do with deconstruction of some sort, the taking apart of things which had once been full of life, whether cows or coal (vegetable matter in a different eon). The vast majority of people in the world work either in agriculture, factories, or service jobs. It is notable that none of these four chapters depict such workers. This is a deliberate choice by the filmmakers, and there is some beauty not only in the visuals of the movie but also in the perseverance and sense of community displayed by workers who undertake difficult, dangerous labor.

14. Stories We Tell (2012)
Extraordinary. Like the best documentaries, this movie not only tells a fascinating story but also explores the nature of documentary itself. I would write more, but there's so much to say about the directorial choices made in this movie that I feel unable to do it justice. An immediate addition to my favorite documentaries and favorite 2010s lists.

98-102. The Devil Next Door (2019)
Netflix docuseries about a Nazi war criminal living in Ohio - about the guy who was the last one to be put on trial in Israel for war crimes during WW2. This was before my time, so I didn't know any of it. Very interesting to see not just the trial and evidence presented, but the cultural context surrounding it and what it means. Lots of twists and turns, and it really didn't know how it would go. Worth a watch, for sure.

137. My Amityville Horror (2012)
A film crew revisits Danny Lutz 35 years after the incidents that befell his family which were dramatized as The Amityville Horror. Danny definitely seems to be affected by whatever happened there. The filmmakers seem to intentionally want to leave it a little ambiguous as to whether the events in the house were as a result of something spectral or whether it was a highly dysfunctional family. This may not work well as a depiction of supernatural phenomena if you are looking for that kind of film, but it does actually work as an interesting character study of Danny who is agitated, seemingly traumatized, at times belligerent (especially when confronted with doubts of his story) but also is very devout in his religion and capable of being very kind like during his visit to Lorraine Warren (famed paranormal investigator depicting in the Conjuring movies who first came to prominence during the Amityville incident). Still I think the movie's hesitance to commit to a perspective on the whole thing is a detriment to it, leaving it feeling like a somewhat unsatisfying watch.

138. El hombre cuando es hombre a.k.a. A Man, When He Is a Man (1982)
This is a kind of expose on toxic masculinity in Costa Rica with images of manliness in media, misogynistic song performances and personal accounts and recollections from people who have seen both sides of the experience. It's fairly interesting but seems to want to shine a light on the issue without much in the way of solutions.

Leonardo DiCaprio tours the world to look at the effects of climate change and question why the issue is being largely ignored in this documentary from the team behind The Cove. There are some interesting moments as we are taken on set to the filming of The Revenant; otherwise though, this brings little new to the table, mostly consists of talking heads and it makes the ludicrous claim that a tax on carbon is the best way to reduce climate change.

I don't necessarily have a solution*, but speaking from experience, introducing a carbon tax doesn't work. The government tried it down here, and all that it led to was higher service prices since the companies and corporations simply passed on the tax to their consumers. One of the points argued in Before the Flood is that if stuff is more expensive, people will use it less, but when you are talking about essential services such as electricity, this is only true to a limited degree. All households need some amount of electricity, and then there were news reports of pensioners who were refusing to put the heating on at night due to the increased costs, which is not what anybody wants. It was such a mess that the government over here actually repealed the carbon tax laws a couple of years ago.

* Solution: Regarding electricity, the best thing to do would be to give every household and business free solar panels. Obviously there would be a gigantic cost involved with this, but I believe that this would have a real impact.

Half documentary, half dramatic reenactment, this film blurs the lines of fiction and reality as director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun returns to his native Chad to make a film set there. Roadblocks come with a lack of cinema culture (all the theatres from his childhood have shut down) and a general anti-cinema sentiment all round. Memorably, one local attacks the camera, stating that it is rude for the director to "steal someone's image" without asking.

* Solution: Regarding electricity, the best thing to do would be to give every household and business free solar panels. Obviously there would be a gigantic cost involved with this, but I believe that this would have a real impact.
Thanks for the info. I had no idea Australia had tried a carbon tax.

Well, it was an interesting idea and one that might have worked were it possible to force the polluters to absorb (rather than pass on) the tax cost.

Western Sahara's turbulent history as a disputed territory (still not self-governing today) is captured in this documentary. There are interviews with both historians and local Sahrawis who have very diverse ways of resisting the current Moroccan occupation of their land (calligraphy; politically charged songs; graffiti; planting walls of red flowers). There are also curious parallels to the much more widely covered and well-known Palestinian conflict.

139. The Drugstore (1980)
This doc on a Chinese pharmacy is reminiscent of the fly-on-the-wall, narrative-free docs of Frederick Wiseman, observing but not commenting on the day-to-day comings and goings at a Chinese drugstore. It's fine for what it is with a few bits of unintentional comedy like the scene with the pharmacist explaining to a group of people how to use spermicide and someone returning a used catheter (the depressed look on the employee's face when they pull it out of the box is pretty amusing).

Image
140. The Arbor (2010)
A quite interesting unconventional doc on the playwright Andrea Dunbar, it features a combination of interviews, actors lip synced to audio interviews and performances of her play The Arbor to create a kind of play-within-a-play feeling that feels appropriate for such a complicated, troubled and volatile subject.

ImageImage
141a. Mondo Macabro: South Asian Cinema (2002)
141b. Discovering 'Evil Dead' (2002)
A couple more horror docs, the first is an episode of the Mondo Macabro series about horror and fantasy films in India and Pakistan (found on the DVD of The Living Corpse) and is a fun watch that gives me lots of ideas for crazy movies to check out. The second is a short doc on the UK distributors of The Evil Dead and the problems they faced with the Video Nasty shenanigans in trying to distribute The Evil Dead in the UK.

ImageImage
141c. Out in the Woods (2016)
141d. 21-87 (1964)
A couple of experimental films, Out in the Woods is a kind of mood piece composed of footage shot by Gosling during the making of Poem Is A Naked Person while 21-87 seems to be a bunch of footage of people on the street edited in a collage fashion. Both are light on content and heavy on pretentious aspirations. Neither are really my cup of tea.

Image
142. Chavez: Inside the Coup (2003)
Regardless of where you lie on the political spectrum, this doc is of value not for its propagandizing depiction of Hugo Chavez but for its footage of an attempted coup to remove him from power as it played out. It's actually a little unfortunate that the filmmakers felt it necessary to infuse the doc with their personal feelings throughout given that their political opinions were not the focus of the doc. If it were more like a Michael Moore type film where the goal was to convince you of a specific viewpoint, then it'd be a different story.

Of course, after watching Samsara, Wife wanted to roll on with similar themes, so she found this. More gorgeous pictures of, well, frozen worlds, though these docs are a bit sadder as they focus on the animals and how climate change is fucking everything up.

If you haven't watched it yet, check out Baraka too. Same director and same kind of beautiful, mesmerizing imagery as Samsara.

143. Muse: H.A.A.R.P. Live at Wembley (2008)
Here we have a very good, appropriately bombastic live show at the legendary Wembley Stadium with the British rock band Muse. I've liked Muse since their first album, and it really looks like they put on a hell of a live show. Definitely one to check out if you are a fan.

Image
144. Classified X (1998)
Melvin Van Peebles' condemnation of racist stereotypes in Hollywood cinema has vitriol and grit to spare with Peebles narrating the history from the streets in a very eloquent and fiery tone. The film excels at calling out and challenging Hollywood to do better. Where it falters is in a couple places. He really undersells the contributions of Sidney Poitier, who is relegated to brief mentions in the context of Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. He fails to call out Poitier and that defiant slap to the face in In the Heat of the Night which is as impactful of a moment in black cinema as most. He also toward the end of the doc really focuses on his own Sweet Sweetback and the single defining moment where blacks took back their cinema, and while Sweetback was certainly a major hallmark in the resurgence in the black film movement of the 70's, it's hardly the only one.

145a. Days of the Pony Express: Museum Edition (2008)
This is a 15-minute edit of a doc on the Pony Express (the 60-minute version is helpfully for sale in the gift shop!) shown at the beginning of the tour of the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph, MO. It's a combination of dry, fact-heavy narration and cheesy, poorly acted re-enactments. There's one guy in particular that plays one of the founders of the Pony Express that is fond of gazing out the window (where you can clearly see a mid-century modern house across the street) as a reaction to everything. For some reason, at the end of the tour, I couldn't quite justify the $20 for the full-length version. But hey, it's not all bad. My 6-year-old son seemed to like the poorly animated, green screened-in tornado that chases a rider at one point.

Image
145b. The Ax Fight (1975)
An old school ethnographic doc that depicts a conflict in a native Venezuelan village when some visitors stop by and sir up some drama with the locals. It also feels like a precursor to the reality TV of today with a particular female villager letting loose with a verbal assault that would put the creeps in Jersey Shore to shame.

Another anti-American political doc courtesy of Uncle Amos... I just don't really dig these.

I know you didn't ask me but I always like giving my opinion anyway. :P

I thought both of them were worth a watch. Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead is probably the better of the two.

146. The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made (2004)
This was a lazy list. Troll but not Troll 2? Why? 3/4 of it are just cheesy sci-fi/horror from the '50s. And for some reason they ranked The Man with Two Heads as worse than Plan 9 from Outer Space... Why? The narrator is over-excited and annoying... Just all around a disappointing list.

ImageImage
147a. El Domador (1978)
147b. Chile paralelo 56 (1964)
A couple of 30 minute shorts from the UNESCO list showing a profile of "animal taming" in Venezuela (which seems to mainly be beating the shit out of them and murdering them) and a profile of natives of southern Chile. The Chile one is the more interesting and informative of the two unless you happen to really be into animal torture.

Image
148. An Injury to One (2002)
A pro-union doc about the murder of the union organizer Frank Little in Montana in the early 20th century. It has an odd almost rhythmic format to it that isn't really suited to the material. It made it needlessly difficult at times to suss out some of the facts of the case. It also seemed to want to focus as much on just advertising for unions in general as it was about Frank Little. Still, the case itself was quite interesting, especially the Dashiell Hammett connection. I may read up further on it later.

149-152. Eurotika! E1-12 (1999)
A fun and informative series on European sexploitation and horror films, each episode focusing on a different theme or director. We have directors like Jess Franco, Jose Larraz, Max Pecas, Michael Reeves, Jean Rollin and Jose Benazeraf profiled as well as episodes on cult actresses, French adult films, Italian horror and more. I dug this one quite a bit.

That sounds cool - have you seen Sex, Censorship, and the Silver Screen? 6-part miniseries about sex in American cinema history. Pretty interesting and informative...
