My Italian consists of weird swearing/slangShow
1. Caesar Must Die (2012)
2. Get Big (2018)
3. The Devil and Father Amorth (2017)
4. Fire at Sea (2016)
This a doc about life on a small Italian island that sees more than its fair share of immigrants on the migrant crisis. Shot in a Wiseman-esque style, it's slow and contemplative, and gives you a very personal feel to it. Which works, but I seem to see not a lot of focus on the migrants per se. Nice enough, but I wanted to learn a bit more from this.

Last update before the New Year...

...welcome to allisoncm, connordenney, and sebby!
Psychotronicbeatnik and Traveller are still holding the top two placings, but Lonewolf2003 has made a huge, sweeping run on the far turn to put himself into the contention entering the home stretch. Jeroeno is still hanging onto the third spot, but Lonewolf is threatening and the former appears to be idling a bit late in the race. Tarris1 and sol have also moved up gradually, but are probably not a threat to the top two at this late stage, however anything can happen in a horse race, as the video below exemplifies (go get em Spicer Cub!):

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

 Amazing video, peeps. Especially the second one in the set which gives an even better view of Spicer Cub's erratic course. The jockey showed real nerve.
Now, I just hope I don't get the Spicer Cub jinx!

Yeah, the jock must have been hanging on for dear life through that narrow gap (and going about 40 mph). I've seen the crew pull the starting gate to a similar spot at other tracks and the space between the gate and the outer rail is like 5-6 feet across... tight squeeze. Amazing the horse came back and almost won.

I had to look Spicer Cub up after watching that. He placed 2nd at Pimlico about a month later and 1st in a 1 mile at Delaware Park about 3 months later - with the same jockey riding! What a team.

With diverse opinions, the dialogue exchanges between the pair are more heated than they might sound here, and César Charlone's camera nicely becomes more frantic (handheld) during the pair's more argumentative moments. Alas, the two most interesting topics upon which the pair do not see eye-to-eye (covering up child abuse in the Church; gay marriage) are largely ignored, with the film mostly spent on Francis reflecting on his youth.

Tarris1 and sol have also moved up gradually, but are probably not a threat to the top two at this late stage, however anything can happen in a horse race, as the video below exemplifies (go get em Spicer Cub!):

Not enough to overtake beatnik... he's doing the same thing right as we speak only he's already 50 films ahead of you. I expect another round of 10-20 films the next time he posts. (D:)

1. The Spaghetti West (2005)
While not funded as an Italian production, it is focused entirely on Italian westerns from the 60's and 70's and includes interviews with the Sergios (Leone, Corbucci and Sollima), Franco Nero, Ferdinando Baldi, Tomas Milan, Ennio Morricone and many more in the Italian film industry. If this still doesn't count for some reason, let me know and I'll remove it.

The premise here came with potential as a group of vacationers find themselves stranded on a small Greek island whose inhabitants have mysteriously disappeared - except for one who begins to terrorise them. There are some well done shots of the friends scouring the dark crevasses of the island, but this soon becomes repetitive with little in the way of gore or explicit horror (after a decent opening) until the extremely gory final twenty minutes.

I'm too lazy to count the number of entries, but I recently watched the mini-series Le avventure di Pinocchio (1972). I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Pinocchio. It follows the book fairly closely, although there are some minor differences.

Contrary to what one might expect from here, the film has very few boo-moments and overt scares. Our hero's arrival at the castle is magnificently long and drawn out as he wanders darkened corridors in silence and mere candlelight with an increasing sense of dread. He then has hallucinations in which he sees the deaths of the haunted castle's previous victims. He also has a spooky encounter in which he is shown how things can live on after death.

No more for me this year, but great job hosting, peeps. I had planned to see a lot, lot more, but real life and the other two Challenges got in the way. And yes, I do plan to one day complete an Italian Challenge without totally focusing on horror. One of these days, one of these days...

Glad you liked it. Valeria Golino is quite something in it, is she ? I like the film exudes Italy’s sensuality so much while still being a modern story about a woman living in a men’s world. Pretty sure it won’t appeal to all but there will be some of us.

This was the first time I've seen her in an Italian film and it was something else entirely. She was crush-worthy in Hot Shots! & Deux, and OK in Rain Man, but I'd never seen her actually act. She definitely carried the film.
