10. Take One False Step (1949)
11. Step Down to Terror (1958)

12. The Killer Inside Me (1976)

Image

Stacy Keach shines in the lead role here and has some excellent scenes near the end as he waxes philosophical about life and converses with a doctor on existential matters loosely related to his dark behaviour. The film takes a long time to get where it is going though and the constant narration from Keach as he keeps talking about his childhood and so on detracts from the immediacy of the action. Keach is really much better than the material here.

12. The Killer Inside Me (1976)

Possibly the two best films I have seen so far this challenge - but not a double feature (only just realiased Housemaid is in the Noir Encyclopedia list).

13. The Amazing Mr. X (1948)

Image

The plot here is more complex than it might at first seem with a couple of good twists propelling the material into a new direction in its second half, gradually becoming more about the titular medium than our ostensible widow protagonist. John Alton's cinematography is excellent as always with lots of atmospheric shots in limited lighting and from unusual camera angles. The widow's fleeting moments of terror are appropriately nightmarish too.

14. The Housemaid (1960)

Image

This thriller is slow to warm up but once it gets going though, it rarely lets up and the second half is especially strong as things becoming increasingly twisted as power dynamics shift and the housemaid ends up manipulating and controlling her employees and their children (who never gave her a proper chance). The film is also exquisitely photographed, with shots through glasses of water and much mobile camerawork. Silly final minute though.

FTV:12:Second Chance (1947) 6

Arm-barring anyone who tries to take her down (!) Louise Currie gives the stand-out performance as Summers, thanks to Currie shaking Summers Caper glamour with the quick-wit of a Femme Fatale. One step behind Summers, Kent Taylor brings out a devilish cad flavour as Wolf, who finds his eye on the diamond prize being distracted from the sight of Summers. Shining for a trim 63 minutes, director James Tinling & cinematographer Benjamin H. Kline neatly pair the elegance of Summers and Wolf’s thieving Caper with heavies in the underworld and the force waiting round to give neither of them a second chance.

11. I Wake Up Screaming (1941) 6/10
After a model is found murdered, her promoter is accused as the main suspect as he and the model's sister try to clear his name and find the real killer. The use of shadows and lighting helps give this film some mood and tension, despite some lackluster moments. Carole Landis has a charm and spunk to her, but once the film mostly does away with her flashbacks, we are left only with the extremely bland Betty Grable filling the generic romantic interest role. Victor Mature is pretty creepy with his ventriloquist dummy face, and the two together are unconvincing and boring. The plot has a lot of twists and turns which keeps it moderately entertaining, but the minor characters could've had a bit more to them to make the final reveal a bit more powerful.

15. I Saw the Devil (2010)

While bits and pieces here strain credibility, this is a pretty riveting and borderline insane movie that frequently verges on black comedy territory. The dialogue tends to spell things out a little, but the film also looks at some of the dangers of revenge, questioning whether 'getting even' is ever really beneficial beyond catharsis. The final few minutes are pretty potent too, though the project perhaps edges a bit close to celebrating vigilantism.

16. I Love Trouble (1948)

Image

While he sometimes feels miscast as a hard-boiled protagonist PI, Franchot Tone does well rolling out the script's snappy cynical wisecracks and banter here. The film also has some neat cinematic tricks, such as the camera shaking as Tone recovers consciousness. Alas, the basic story is pretty second-rate and formulaic; it almost promises to be some slightly different early on with pronounced comedy, but this soon disappears in favour of melodrama.

Last year during Noirvember I watched Krska's 'Az se vrátís' / 'Till You Return' and was hugely impressed and immersed by his capturing of an ambiance of tenement desperation. 'Cesta zpátky' from 1959 impressed me just as much as the earlier entry when it came to ambiance and atmosphere and perhaps even more overall, particularly in how it balanced the light flightiness of youth with the darker elements. Three youths steal the takings of a cinema and one loses his coat in a tussle. Scared to return home he wanders the dockfront for several days and nights and is helped by a girl. Variously lyrical, swirling, threatening and with an infectious jazzy soundtrack. A remarkable, tender, redemptive noir. Scenes that took my breath away with their off-kilter lensing: a scooter chase through darkened streets of lamps and tram-tracks, the youth's regretful night-time return to the scene of the trio's crime with the lights of the cinema dimming one by one and the wire mesh of the shop-front coming up as he walks away ruefully, the hug of concealment pictured above as the police walk past humming and whistling. Beautifully acted by the young leads Eduard Cupák and Jana Dítetová. One I shall cherish!
That's all, folks!

This Alfred Hitchcock thriller may be slow to warm up and heavy on the psychobabble and romance, but from the moment that Ingrid Bergman starts to become suspicious here, the movie rarely lets up. From dreamy montages as they kiss (see above), to the Salvador Dalí fashioned dream sequence, to the gun point-of-view shots near the end, this is a very visually arresting movie - and his eventual flashback of childhood trauma is absolutely haunting.

12. The Petrified Forest (1936) 7/10
An escaped gangster holds a group of people hostage at a roadside diner in the desert. The film spends a while building up the main 'good' characters; Leslie Howard is a failed British writer, aimlessly drifting until finding his way to the diner where Bette Davis is a waitress and an aspiring artist who wants to visit France. Their banter makes them both enjoyable to watch, and though Davis looks both 40 and 14, the 'romance' that develops between them feels creepy, and her 'love', destroys any spunk that the character had. Humphrey Bogart has a rare good performance and character here, though Mantee is a bit underdeveloped he has an intimidating presence. Though the dialogue is always snappy and light, there is still tension in the film though it never takes itself too seriously. Howard's character's decision towards the end was really dumb, though, and some of the dialogue is waffley nonsense.

Once you go noir, you'll never go farShow
1. Brute Force (1947)
2. 5 Against the House (1955)
3. Shock Corridor (1963)
4. Pickup on South Street (1953)
5. Little Caesar (1931)
6. The Long Goodbye (1973)
7. Whispering Footsteps (1943)
8. Lady in the Death House (1944)
9. Strangers in the Night (1944)
10. The Whistler (1944)
11. The Mark of the Whistler (1944)
12. The Naked City (1948)
A nice early procedural, but didn't do a whole lot for me.

13. Escape from Crime (1942)
A guy was framed, gets paroled, and tries to go straight after prison, working as a photographer for a local newspaper. Fine enough, but very cliched and wooden.

14. Voice of the Whistler (1945)
Not super noir-y, but a wildly telegraphed plot. Meh.
