FTV:19: The Sign of Death (1939) (Mexico.) 6

Image

As those film makers in the US were having to fight with the Hays Code, across the border co-writer/(with Jose Benavides hijo/ Francisco Elias/ Jose Martinez de la Vega and Salvador Novo) director Chano Urueta & his future regular cinematographer Victor Herrera were showing everyone how things are done when free of a Code in decades ahead of their time in startling set-pieces, stripping the sacrificial victims topless, and hanging onto long shadows surrounding the Klan-dressed baddie smearing another slot of the sign of death with blood.

Spreading out the stylish set-pieces, Urueta makes the limitations of equipment from the era visible, with what should be a buzzing newsroom uncovering the case, getting clipped by stilted, bulky wide and medium-shots. Bringing some light comedic sparks off the press from the slap-stick of Cantinflas, the writers follow Urueta in breaking what would be breaking Hays Code rules with menacing dialogue stating that all that sacrifices must be “virgins” for the sign of death.

I don't know as much as I should about Mexican history and I certainly never heard of this war (between Catholics and the socialist government that outlawed them in the 1920s)

This film is blessed by some stunning images as the protagonist has nightmares and is taken by Death into a candle-lit room. Much of the dialogue ("we spend more time dead than alive") is superb too. I did not find the protagonist likeable though with his disgust over sharing food with his doting kids. The story is also little more than a simplistic fable, but what great images, cool fantastical encounters and thoughtful meditations on life and death!

Oh, thanks! I've read a lot of Graham Greene but not that one, I guess. I seem to have checked the movie, but have no memory of it.

FTV:20:Dr. Satán (1966) (Mexico)6.

Image

Turning poor souls into zombies in his underground lair, director Miguel Morayta & cinematographer Raul Martinez Solares drill a dark psychedelic atmosphere, tuning into the reverberating score with smoke masked close-ups and eerie devils overlapping Dr. Satan’s devilish operations. Dicing the terror of this doc in his lair with sinister underworld dealings in the outdoors, the screenplay by Sidney T. Bruckner and Jose Maria Fernandez Unsain inject a Noir mystery into Satan’s hands, as Satan floods Mexico with counterfeit cash which in hand helps cover any questions people raise on what he gets up to in his lair.

Whilst the flood of cash brings a ticking clock tension to the police trying to find him before the next scheduled operations, the writers disappointingly fold the majority of the mystery into lacking the menace of Dr. Satan’s operations, due to little being spent on building up Dr. Satan as a horrific threat in the outside world. Holding victims down with a rogue gentlemen false charm,Joaquín Cordero gives a great turn, which laces viciousness with a devilish charm for Dr. Satan.

This comedy focuses on a tourist hotel employee who teaches his colleagues the tricks of the trade. The film has some intriguing ambiguity in terms of who is really exploiting who. On the surface, the surly and ungrateful tourists make life difficult for the hotel employees - but the employees believe they can manipulate the guests to earn tips. There is not a lot here to sustain a feature length film though and it felt drawn out even at ~86 minutes.

While little especially horrific occurs here, the film is carried through by the power relationship between the protagonists with a great turn by Ana Patricia Rojo as the domineering supposed witch and Elsa María Gutiérrez is just as solid as her underling. Stretched out to 90 minutes, the film never quite manages to keep a lingering sense of dread and uncertainty as to whether the pair will take their witchcraft games too far. Solid ending though.

FTV:21:Cronos (1993) (Mexico.) 8.

At the time becoming the most expensive Mexican film ever made after loans and bank debts were used to raise a extra half million which took the budget to $2 million, writer/ directing auteur Guillermo del Toro (GdT) & his regular cinematographer Guillermo Navarro display a remarkable focus under all that pressure, with a procession in establishing visual motifs which would be built upon across GdT’s future works, turning the wheels on the Steampunk style inner workings of the 450-year-old mechanical, bug-shaped object, spinning to the glowing jars filled with monstrous contents being lined across the screen by GdT. Stating in the detailed commentary that only one take could be shot a good number of times due to the limited film stock left, GdT and Navarro thankfully don’t leave out ingredients when brewing a Gothic Horror atmosphere, steaming up on Hammer Horror- inspired deep blue lines being cut across the screen consuming Gris into the darkness, which gets set alight by refined panning shots to spots of blood.

Writing the beginnings of the script in 1984 under the title "Vampire of the Grey Dawn", the screenplay by GdT impressively avoids the missteps stuck in long-term development projects often take, by keeping concentrated the relationship between Gris and Aurora, who jolts Gris by being able to see the human face behind the face of a monster (a recurring theme for GdT.) Injected by one of the legs on the device, GdT sinks the fangs of this modern vampire into addiction, as antique dealer Gris (played by a superb Federico Luppi, a future regular collaborator of GdT) loses all the warmth shared with his family, in exchange, for the addictive warmth of blood.

FTV:22:El vampiro (1957) (Mexico.) 8.

Image

The first film appearance of Dracula to give him elongated fangs a year before Hammer Horror’s version, director Fernando Mendez & cinematographer Rosalio Solano build a fascinating halfway castle between the classic shadow play Gothic and the oncoming full bodied blood lust, where cute bats on visible strings fly round a shocking sequence of Dracula killing a child. Hitching a ride to Dracula/ Duval’s mansion basking in expressionism shadows tied with chilly fog, Mendez spreads Duval’s wings in elegant black and white, reaching out to wide-shots filling the rooms with mist where Duval can (and does) hide from his guests, until he steps out into prime Gothic Horror close-ups on Duval’s necking.

Meeting Enrique and Marta at a crossroads, the screenplay by Ramon Obon and Ramon Rodriguez prints pages of Bram Stoker's creation with their own terrific ideas (no Van Helsing) leading to a playful mystery guest in the mansion attempting to stop Duval from having a nibble, turning the pages for Enrique to realise what Duval has a taste for, which ignites a thrillingly fiery final encounter amid the fall of the house of Duval. Biting into his first film, German Robles gives a mesmerising debut turn as Duval, whose aggressiveness to getting his next victim is paired by Robles with a utterly chilling gentlemanly image presented to guests to get their guards down in the house of Duval.

FTV:23:Intrépidos punks (1988) (Mexico.) 10. (How has this got under 150 votes!)

Image

Riding on the chords of the super catchy theme song (by a sadly uncredited composer) director Francisco Guerrero & cinematographer Alfredo Uribe bring da ruckus with a joyfully weird, blazing Punk Rock atmosphere, which Search and Destroy the leather- clad Punk/Metalhead bikers with mega spikes playing a Vicious tune to anyone who dares confront their killing of innocents and Bankrobber deeds (they even have a band playing their theme tune in the middle of a bank, that they are in the process of robbing!)

Riffing the second half to be a battle between Police & Thieves,Guerrero revs the bikes with gallons of Grindhouse gory sleaze, stripping the big-haired Punk ladies (but keeping the slightly out of shape lads dressed-thankfully!) bare, and finishing the set with what appears to be a tank running over a Punk. Playing the flick with a straight-line 3-chord spirit, the screenplay by Roberto Marroquin & Ulises Perez Aguirre Give 'Em Enough Rope by unleashing a animated mood by joyfully pinning Piratos, Caligula and Tarzan as names of the break-neck bank robbing and killing Intrepidos punks.

An odd entry as this is an American story set in Chicago with and American lead, though it was filmed and directed entirely in Argentina as the author/lead was blacklisted from the US. Wife read the book and wanted to see this version, as the author plays the lead. But this was directed so poorly that you didn't even understand it was a Black voice telling the story, nor did you understand the social justice implications from the novel. Frankly terrible, and not worth it.

Playing a socially awkward yet cheerful character, Marcelia Cartaxo is well cast here, but it is hard to say what exactly the film is about. She does not really change much throughout and the final couple of scenes make her whole journey seem a little pointless. The film does have its scattered beautiful moments though (Cartaxo picked up by a prospective boyfriend and gently swung through the air) but I found her more disgusting than pitiful myself.

6. El Lugar sin Limites (Mexico, 1978)
Didn't much like this one, for reasons I find hard to explain.

7. Rue Cases Negres (Martinique, 1983)
On the other hand, this is a lovely movie. It's not perfect (the literary precocity of the main character strains credulity), but it's a very compelling and lovingly detailed coming-of-age story set in post-emancipation Martinique. The early scenes with the protagonist and Medouze, the old man, are spellbinding. I might add this to my 500<400 list.

02. Robinson Crusoe, by Luis Bunuel (1954) 7/10

This a very tame film for Bunuel, with only one appearance of insects, and almost nothing against religion... Still it's a good adaptation and works rather well.

03. Terra em Transe, by Glauber Rocha (1967) 7/10

I have had difficulty with Rocha's abstract style, and I still do here. However the political allegory is obvious enough so I could catch it.

Made on a micro budget of $5000 (leading to the crew having to also act in the film) co-writer/(with Ramiro Garcia Bogliano and Honorio Galarza) director Adrian Garcia Bogliano & cinematographer Sergio Fleischer step towards the fittie ladies with washed out, bone dry,low-res digital video, which jabs at the viewer in shaky hand-held camera moves, that also leave potentially interesting detours (such as into animation and gory chops) to be ruined by blending in to the same flat appearance as the rest of the movie. Matching the look of the flick, the sparks for indie creativity in the revelation that appearances can be deceiving in the laid-back lives of the ladies,is sadly left untouched by plodding dialogue which gives little to distinguish any of the cast, and causes every twist to land with a tied whimper on each of the 36 steps.

FTV:25: Violência na Carne (1981) (Brazil.) 8.

Image

Delivering the one-two punch of robbers setting a car on fire which the camera lingers a little too long on, (gotta get every penny out of it!) cutting to a lesbian couple having softcore sex due to one of them being troubled by a dream.”Composer”/writer/
director Alfredo Sternheim gleefully lays the sleaze on thick, heightened by a fantastical telenovela soap opera atmosphere, spray-painted on Sternheim stealing music pieces from other movies (such as Bernard Herrmann’s theme for Obsession (1976-also reviewed) played as a back drop to the steamy, boobage galore sex scenes, (which includes straight, lesbian, and gay sequences) that grind to the Grindhouse shots of dusty beat-downs and blunt killings.

Storming in on a cabin with filled with aspiring Adult lads and ladies, the screenplay by Sternheim cheerfully hits every morally wrong, utterly odd note possible, thanks to the robbers raiding the cabin of the sex-crazed residences with plans to hold them all hostage and commit rapes, which become laced with peculiar dialogue which jumps from "pornochachadas” drama, to Kafka being casually referenced in conversations, all done without a attempt for the changes in dialogue to spread evenly! Possessing a touch of Edwige Fenech glamour, Helena Ramos gives a enticing, raunchy turn as Jesse, who finds herself in the middle of violence and flesh.

Reportedly inspired by actual events, this is a film that may work better with knowledge of those events. As it is, the movie provides limited context for the situation with many unanswered questions and intriguing but murky religious overtones. Whatever the case, the whole thing is incredibly well shot, full of beautiful tracking and panning shots and magnificently intense close-ups throughout (see above). The deep ironies of the situation resonate too.

The premise here is intriguing and Ricardo Darín of Nine Queens fame is fantastic playing a very different shifty and clever character. The film is slow paced though and does not quite capitalise on its potential. The title refers to the name Darín gives to his awareness when he is about to have an epileptic seizure, but this only happens twice throughout. The second half of the film is pretty riveting though and the melancholic music is great.

FTV:26:Rooms for Tourists (2004) (Argentina.) 6.

Dropping the five women off in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, co-writer/(with Ramiro Garcia Bogliano) director Adrian Garcia Bogliano treats all the pals to a warm Southern Gothic hospitality greeting in thick black and white, giving the flick a rough dirt under the fingernails mood when catching lingering glances from the local, who soon hand out killings dripping in treacle blood. Filmed over 4 years, the screenplay by the Bogliano’s bares the marks of the stop/start filming, darting from suspicions of outsiders, to Slasher killing and a left-field twist ending, at a speed which leaves them all half-bake, due to each thread being just randomly dropped, instead of being built up to make rooms for tourists.
