Little of note occurs during the first hour here, but from the moment the police catch wind of what is going on, the film becomes a nonstop emotional roller-coaster ride with Imelda Staunton simply magnificent, balancing a mixture of embarrassment, shame, fear and yet also genuine conviction that what she was doing was indeed just to "help young girls out". I found it hard to sympathise with her though given that one of her girls almost died.

14. Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino-2017) {TSPDT21C #178}

15. Cabaret (Bob Fosse-1972) {TSPDT #293}

Man, Fosse movies never seem to leave me feeling like I saw piece of great cinema but damn if parts of it don't stick into my brain for later digesting. That creeping nazism is well-done. Fosse doesn't have to show the Nazis being horrible or the upcoming Holocaust. We know what happens and the terror is seeing people ignore what we now know as red flags. Minorities feeling unwelcome (red flag). Using the national anthem as a means of intimidation (red flag). Landlord stating that it's an established fact about an organized international conspiracy exists between Jewish bankers and Communists despite that being a contradiction (RED FLAG). Gives me the twin thoughts of "Why didn't they see the red flags?" and "What red flags am I missing today?" :circle:

19. Fellini Satyricon (Federico Fellini, 1969) 5.5/10 ... Reinforces my sense that I like everything Fellini up to La Dolce Vita, and everything starting with 8 1/2 isn't really my thing
20. The Man Who Would Be King (John Huston, 1975) 8/10
21. Jules and Jim (Francois Truffaut, 1962) 7/10 ... This is fine but definitely not a top 100 TSPDT contender in my book - doesn't really stand out for me over other quality New Wave films or some of Truffaut's later work

While filmed in Wiseman's usual observational fashion, this is one of his less typical films without bureaucracy or marginalised individuals in focus. It feels like a lesser work too, but is still interesting. The dialogue-free shots of the boxers in motion have a rhythmic precision to them with their punches and blows sounding poetic, while the casual conversations between various gym patrons while training makes the gym feel like a social gathering place.

Despite a couple of characters constantly asking their underlings to speak "in plain English", this film has a tendency to get lost in technical jargon and I was not clear about what was going on for much of the first hour. By the second half though, the sympathetic character drama became more interesting to me than the finer plot details, especially their wrestling with their position in life and how to get out of dire straits (with or) without hurting others.

My goal to see all movies I hadn't seen yet on 23+ official toplists ends tomorrow, only La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928) to check off.
There are still 4 movies left on 23+ official lists I was planning to watch but won't in the end:
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
La règle du jeu (1939)
Roma città aperta (1945)
Ugetsu monogatari (1953)

Reason for this is that this month has been full of 6/10 movies for me which means they are okay. All movies that were left on 23+ lists at the start of this month were movies I wasn't really keen on watching and it turned out I was right about most. Also a bunch of 7/10's but almost no 8/10's which is a shame.

This is something else, I'm watching the Criterion version. Do they use the same music and sound as in the original picture ?
If so, that's really impressive

1. TSPDT #692 Mitt liv som hund [My Life as a Dog] (1985, Lasse Hallström): 8.0 - Good combination of pathos with humor.
2. TSPDT1001-2000 #650 The Addiction (1995, Abel Ferrara): 7.8 - Through the guerilla filmmaking method it gives an interesting view on live in the backstreets in NY in the early 90s. The comparison with vampirism with addiction is original and interesting. Lily Talyor greatly conveys the difference stages of confidence of her character. But all the pseudo-intellectual philosophizing drags this down and make it much more pretentious than it should have to be.
3. TSPDT1001-2000 #610 The Honeymoon Killers (1969, Leonard Kastle): 7.5 - Based on a famous real life case of a couple, who killed women they met through contact ads, this has tremendous insight in how desperation leads all the decision of the characters. The victims gets into desperation, but also the offenders act out of desperation; desperation for love or money. The cinematography is gorgeous. The acting leaves a bit to be desired tho.
4. 21st #863 La danse – Le ballet de l’Opéra de Paris (2009, Frederick Wiseman): 7.8 - You get what you can expect from a Wiseman doc about the famous Parisian Ballet company. All the rehearsals gets a bit repetitive after time. I would like to have seen some more of the other employers or policy discussions.

A comedy/drama blend with more drama than comedy. The film may have worked better with reserved genre emphasis; I disliked the trite over-protective sister/obvious romantic interest and routine recklessness when rich. An energetic Matthew McConaughey is great here but it's more of a cameo turn. Things certainly click here though when the strip acts are in focus. Awesome lighting, fun routines... but The Full Monty this sadly is not.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

I'm curious as to why you aren't keen on those four in particular? What is it about their reputations that puts you off?

It's not that I won't see them in the nearby future but they just look to have a lot in common with movies I've seen this month and I need variety more than anyone else on this forum.

Ah, I misread "in the end" to be definitive. You have a treat ahead of you when you do get to them.

15. Cabaret (Bob Fosse-1972) {TSPDT #293}

16. A History of Violence (David Cronenberg-2005) {TSPDT #728}

Man, except for a bit of poorly-acted moments by some of the ancillary characters, this just doesn't feel like a David Cronenberg movie.

24. Man's Castle (Frank Borzage, 1933) 6/10
25. The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962) 8/10
26. The Naked Spur (Anthony Mann, 1953) 7/10 ... The first time I saw this I thought it was great, now I think it's fine but nothing special. Which is the opposite of my opinion when I rewatched the Man from Laramie (1955) for the Western challenge a few months ago.

A road movie style sequel to the 2012 hit. The film places more emphasis on comedy than drama this time, but the genuinely funny moments (making a frowning convenience store worker smile) are few and far between. The most vibrant and dynamic character (MMcC) from the original is absent this time too, which allows the rest of Mike's colleagues to be fleshed out in a lot more depth... but none of them interested me in the first place. :/
