43. Looking for Langston (1989) TSPDT #1789

Image

A deliberately dreamy movie that film provides little insight into Langston Hughes, yet feels nicely poetic as it provides a stream of consciousness style look at love, lust and the ability of well composed words to enhance one's memory of past relationships. The mobile and frequently gliding camerawork is excellent and the film splices archive footage and newly shot footage together with remarkable finesse. Memorable if a bit flimsy as a narrative.

44a. A Diary for Timothy (1945) TSPDT #991
44b. Scorpio Rising (1963) TSPDT #586 65m

Image Image

A Diary for Timothy is fueled by a cute idea (make a documentary about the war efforts for a newborn baby to reflect upon when grown up) but the the execution did little for me. I found the whole thing a little repetitive and sentimental with its talking up of war efforts in order to provide for future generations. The joke comment by te18 on the film's iCM page made me laugh though. Scorpio Rising on the other hand was a very nice surprise. I probably need a second viewing in which I concentrate harder to get more out of it, but I found interesting the gradual progression from shots that seem to celebrate the bikers as they fix up their vehicles, get dressed etc to all those rapid fire cuts of Nazi iconography (including a Nazi checkers board!) and footage from a Jesus movie on a blue-and-white TV set. The way all the sourced music fits around the images really impressed me too.

ICM
March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

I Watched Pictures, Didn't I?
1. 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile [aka 4 months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days] (Cristian Mungiu-2007) {TSPDT #614}
2. Persona (Ingmar Bergman-1966) {TSPDT #19}
3. Song of the Little Road [aka Pather Panchali] (Satyajit Ray-1955) {TSPDT #55}
4. On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan-1954) {TSPDT #153}

6. Holy Motors (Leos Carax-2012) {TSPDT21C #59}
7. The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (Robert Eggers-2015) {TSPDT21C #458}
8. Roma (Alfonso Cuarón-2018) {TSPDT21C #129}
9. Man on Wire (James Marsh-2008) {TSPDT21C #117}
10. King Kong (Ernest B. Schoedsack, Merian C. Cooper-1933) {TSPDT #161}
11. Gilda (Charles Vidor-1946) {TSPDT #914}
12. The Unknown (Tod Browning-1927) {TSPDT #980}
13. Festen [aka The Celebration] (Thomas Vinterberg-1998) {TSPDT #374}
14. Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino-2017) {TSPDT21C #178}
15. Cabaret (Bob Fosse-1972) {TSPDT #293}
16. A History of Violence (David Cronenberg-2005) {TSPDT #728}
17. Y Tu Mamá También (Alfonso Cuarón-2001) {TSPDT #662}
18. Die Blechtrommel [aka The Tin Drum] (Volker Schlöndorff-1979) {TSPDT #710}
19. Traffic (Steven Soderbergh-2000) {TSPDT21C #253}
20. Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott-1991) {TSPDT #706}
21. Signs (M. Night Shyamalan-1991) {TSPDT21C #864}

22. Stromboli, terra di Dio (Roberto Rossellini-1950) {TSPDT #345}

This just.. isn't very good. So much seemed unnecessary and dragged on with pointlessness. Just bleak and meandering. Most reviews seem to talk about how Bergman had an affair with Rossellini or how Bergman is magnificent, or how there are different cuts. None of those facts make this movie interesting. I've seen better and don't understand why this made the list.

45b. Statues Also Die (1953) TSPDT #1858 60m

The Wallace & Gromit film was a revision, and a delightful one at that. How many other comedies can boast a hilarious climax on a miniature railway track? Statues Also Die was a first-time viewing and a disappointment with Resnais and Marker behind it. Some decent images and Potemkin lion style reaction shots of the various masks and statues, but I kept wishing that the narrator would shut up and let us bask in the beauty of the objects - though there is one cool bit in which he says that the statues "don't see us", only for the camera to turn to make it look like one masks is staring us down. I also have no idea what to make of the short's descent into basketball games towards the end (I kid you not; weirdest statue documentary I've ever seen).

And that's it for me. I had intended to see more this month, but that wasn't to be. :( Thanks for hosting shugs; I really enjoyed making a decent dent in the 21st Century List. Hopefully I have seen enough now to retain my Bronze Award when the list next updates! :sweat:

Unless something crazy happens this will be my first top 5 finish which is awesome. Got to check a lot of classics as well.
Best of luck to you. I have no idea if Roger is planning to participate this month and whether he has seen more than you or not, but you've put up one hell of a fight, and the constant, continuous progress of both yourself and Obgeoff has motivated to watch much more than I originally expected to at the start of the month. Thanks for the motivation!

Thanks and it was indeed a good race. Now I'm taking a month off challenges to come back in December and maybe for the first time break the 50 barrier.

42. Excalibur (1981, Boorman) 5

I've really enjoyed this challenge. Its the first time since I joined the forum that a challenge and my own quest to complete Tspdt have aligned. I can see myself getting really engrossed in challenges next year when I finally get to platinum.

Also was motivated by sol, coryn AB537 and blueboybob. I would watched 10 or so fewer movies this month without the challenge.

33. The Haunting (Robert Wise, 1963) 7/10 ... Not bad, but preferred The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix based on the same novel, which had more time to flesh out the story and wasn't held back by the remnants of the Hays Code

Surprised 1975 and not a year from this century bested the rankings of most watched.

March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! I watched 12 films from 1975 and the most popular film was from then too. Those two random spikes contributed.

Thanks for the stats and congratulations Traveller.
