Silent Era Challenge (Official, September 2019)
1. Keisatsukan (1933)
I probably will have very few in this challenge but I did want to mention that this was a quite good gritty crime thriller that I'd definitely recommend for people if they're in a more fatalistic mood.

3. Seven Chances (Buster Keaton, 1925) 7.5/10 - Very enjoyable silent comedy. Totally predictable but that's fine where these things are concerned.
1. It (1927) - 5/10

Here's what I have managed to get through today in between navigating through everybody's opinions on the 2020 Challenge Discussion threads.
4. Four Sons (1928)

A silent melodrama mostly notable for being directed by a young John Ford, who has more than a few interesting visual tricks up his sleeve, from a beautiful shot of lake reflection rippled by a pebble (see above), to foggy nighttime battlefields, to a poignant dissolve-over at an empty dinner table where the family matriarch remembers her sons sitting around the table. As a narrative though, the film is incredibly flag-waving and overly jingoistic.
5. Dr. Jack (1922)

This Harold Lloyd comedy takes a while to get going as it keeps episodically darting between subplots, but several of these are very funny - a sabotaged poker game in particular. Whatever the case, from the moment that Lloyd begins treating the bedridden Mildred Davis, the film never once lets up, concluding with a near twenty minute chase scene inside a mansion in which Lloyd gets to truly strut his stuff, performing amazing gymnastic feats.
6. The Matinee Idol (1928)

While it is uncomfortable watching Johnnie Walker parade around in blackface here, he does well with what is essentially a dual role, trying to romance Bessie Love's character as two personalities (with and without makeup). Of course, it is never credible that she does not instantly catch onto the ruse, but Love is so charming in the lead female role and Walker is so earnest that the whole thing still works with a The Producers and Noises Off... vibe.

7. Seven Footprints to Satan (1929)

A somewhat surreal and delightfully bizarre horror comedy that culminates in a memorable sequence that brings to mind Eyes Wide Shut with cloaked figures - but no nudity. The actual ending is a bit of a letdown after the danger and mystery established in the eerily purple-tinted Eyes Wide Shut-ish climax (see above). This is nevertheless entertaining throughout with several very funny lines, great elongated shadow special effects and so on.

8. The Cat and the Canary (1927)

John Willard's oft filmed stage play gets a delightful German Expressionism treatment here in the hands of Paul Leni. From dissolve-over shots of cats and skulls (see above), to camerawork that creeps around corridors to distortion effects to show shock, the film is an absolute visual delight. Leni does some great things with the title cards too, with the word 'HELP!' constantly blowing up and a shaky typeface whenever the word 'ghost' is uttered.

Babara Bedford is entrancing as the besmitten protagonist here with several great moments in which she simply stares longingly into the distance with beautiful, dreamy eyes. It is also nice to come across such an early film with such a positive take on interracial love. Alas, the film has little else of interest. The story mostly amounts to messy fights/attacks and tons of title cards - though there are some notable cliff-top and baby flinging scenes.

Thanks. Will do (assuming I get around to making a list). I'm glad my liking it wasn't a problem for you.

Aside from awkwardly only beginning after the ninth plague (something that leads to less characterisation than in the 50s version), all of the biblical scenes are well done here, full of opulent sets and impressive special effects - including the commandments appearing as words in the sky (see above). Alas, after ~50mins, the biblical retell ends and a melodramatic twentieth century tale begins with only the most obvious of overly moralistic ideas.

The propaganda is laid on thick towards the end of this Vertov documentary, but the overall film is a glorious look at the relationships between human beings and both the natural and manmade environment. The voyeuristic opening shots of rocky shorelines are amazing, and then director Dziga Vertov treats us to creative split screen shots (see above), dissolves of water over people walking, breathtaking extreme low camera angles and so on.

This comedy is well acted by Robert Armstrong and a young Victor McLaglen who share undeniable chemistry, yet they are stuck with two absolutely odious, womanising characters who believe that violence is always the best solution. The vast majority of the film is spent on brawls and the two men objectifying women as they embark on sexual conquests with a poor running gag of wondering if the children of their old flings were fathered by them.

Max- I originally recorded The Chehchakos as 1924 instead of the correct release year of 1923. My apologies for that. With that correction plus this group of shorts I believe I have finished the sidebar challenge!

My apologies for that. With that correction plus this group of shorts I believe I have finished the sidebar challenge!
