Welcome to the Silent Era Challenge!




The challenge will run through the month of September, starting September 1st at midnight in your local timezone and ending September 30th, also at midnight.

Goal:
Watch as many silent-era silent films as you can. Only silent films made during the silent era are eligible, if you have any doubts as to whether a film counts or not feel free to ask.

Rules:
- Rewatches allowed.
- A feature film (at least 40 min) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- No TV series this challenge.

- Title (year) is the preferred format
- New posts are preferred over edited posts
- I'll be tracking years with this challenge

It's worth noting that in some Asian countries the silent era extended into the 1930s.
e.g. Haji Agha actore cinema (Iran 33) and a number of Chinese and Japanese films. Also Limite (Brazil 31)

In response to your question, yes - all serials and whatnot fall under the standard 40/60 rule. My "no TV" line in the OP was just something that made me laugh.

And on your note, totally agreed - I generally view ~1935 as an approximate upper limit of the silent era; obviously it has to be silent, but the "era" certainly extends into the 30s. Exceptions to my guesstimate may exist, but we'll handle them on a case-by-case basis.

1. A Sailor-Made Man (1921)



Harold Lloyd's first full length feature, he plays an eccentric Why Worry? style millionaire here who joins the Navy to prove that he is not a layabout. The film benefits from a neat character arc, but gets carried away with episodic subplots. Some are quite funny, especially a cheeky monkey and a fight/dance, but with less stunts, the film is never quite as entertaining as Never Weaken and an evil foreigner stereotype character is a bit icky.

According to Criterion Channel, Ingmar Bergman's Dreams (1955) is silent. Since this contest is for the "Silent Era", I assume that wouldn't be eligible? What about Chaplin's City Lights (1931) or Modern Times (1936)? Given that they were released after most American films had sound, but Chaplin himself had not begun making sound films yet, would they qualify? Regardless, I have a bunch of silents on my PVR that I'm hoping to get through this month.

Yes, silent Era is until when every individual country introduced sound as a norm. So variable around the world, but for US until 27/28.

Modern silents aren't played with live music either, unlike the first ones. So those are a stylistic choice, not a technical limitation

Yeah - both are fine to count as features. My general feeling is to report based on what you actually see - just make a quick note of this in case it happens again so people don't question it.

Thanks for the clarification. Of these, Dreams would have been the most likely for me to watch, given that I've seen the Chaplins already. No big deal from my perspective, I've got way more available to me than I'll be able to watch this month anyway.

Both City Lights and Modern Times were shot at silent film speed (18 frames per second vs. 24 frames for talkies), but both feature synchronized music, sound effects and some garbled dialogue (ala the way that adults sound in Peanuts cartoons), and are often regarded as crossover films. Chaplin never intended City Lights to be a talkie (it was a two-year production that began in 1928 at the end of the silent era), but he originally conceived of Modern Times as a talkie. He changed his mind after shooting some scenes because he did not believe the Little Tramp persona worked with sound. City Lights appears in at least two of the official Silent lists but I do not believe Modern Times appears in any. I was able to count viewings of both of them in last year's silent challenge.

1. Steamboat Bill, Jr. (Reisner & Keaton, 1928). REWATCH. I recently bought the first volume in the Buster Keaton Collection on blu-ray, containing The General and this one. It's really good (it's Keaton, so I repeat myself). It doesn't look quite as stunning as The General, but it's still a very good looking movie, especially when you consider its age.

Widely regarded as one of Buster Keaton's weakest silent features, the gags and comedic routines do not quite play to his talents here with the source material being a play. The pacing is also off with almost twenty minutes elapsing before the deception begins and Keaton not even training until well past the halfway mark. Keaton directs the movie quite competently with some cool armpit framing shots and so on, but this was hard to get through.

This is apparently a spoof of Intolerance - which I haven't seen. Viewed on its own terms, Three Ages is as uneven ride with the constant cutting between tales making it hard to become emotionally invested. There are some great gags -- a friendly lion, a duel at dawn with clubs and an icy chariot race -- but they are few and far between. Keaton does not really have a chance to flex his acting muscles either and his love interests are pretty dull.
