19. Tokyo naito [Tokyo Knights] (1961): 6.0 - A high school student returns from the US to be appointed the successor of an organized crime organisation. While being awesome in every extracurricular club he join he had to also fight the corruption in his organisation. The teen comedy stuff conflicts with the seriousness of the crime drama, making it neither funny nor suspenseful. Highlight is a scene in which he steals some cuff links from the opposing yakuzas dressed as a noh costume and mask. The use of colors during that raid is a foreboding of later Seijun.
20. Tantei jimusho 23: Kutabare akuto-domo [Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastard] (1963): 7.5
21. Tôkyô nagaremono [Tokyo Drifter] (1966): 7.8 - I had to adjust to get into this one. Firstly because the scheming at the start is incomprehensible, although the plot later reveals itself to be very simple. Secondly and most importantly, because of the artificial style that differs from the previous Suzuki's more conventional genre movies. With its empty sets, posed mis-en-scenes, bright colors, big jumps in editing and repeating folkpop theme song, this produces the ultimate pop art musical version of the so-called "borderless action" movie.
22. Tsigoineruwaizen [Zigeunerweisen] (1980): 7.5
23. Kagerô-za [Heat-Haze Theatre/Heat Shimmer Theater](1981): 7.5 - After a prolonged absence due to a unofficial ban on him Suzuki returned in the 80s with the first two installments of the so-called Taisho Trilogy. (He also made two movies during the 70s). Not having to make genre movies anymore for a studio, he turned out some pure art movies. The kind in which narrative coherence take a back seat to symbolism and dreamlike logic. I can’t say what happened or what everything means exactly, but I do know that as a cinematic experience I liked this two movies.
24. Yumeji (1991): 7.0 - The third entry of the Taisho Trilogy made a decade later, is a narrative a bit (just a bit) more comprehensible, tho it's still far from a conventional biopic. The movie is also lighter and more playful in tone than the previous two. But paradoxical also the least of them.
25. Dai-bosatsu tôge [The Sword of Doom] (1966) (rewatch): 9.5 > 9.0 - Finishing my challenge run by rewatching a favorite. Tatsuya Nakadai shines as the nihilistic samurai, who is as much a victim as maker of his own destructive destiny, in this truly stunning samurai movie by Okamoto featuring some of the best samurai fight scenes in cinema history.

18. Spirited Away / Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Hayao Miyazaki, 2001) [Rewatch] 9 (=)
Still amazingly good.

1. Ikigami (Tomoyuki Takimoto, 2008) 6
2. Rainy Dog / Gokudô kuroshakai (Takashi Miike, 1997) 7
3. Youth of the Beast / Yajû no seishun (Seijun Suzuki, 1963) 7+
4. Ju-on: The Grudge (Takashi Shimizu, 2002) 5
5. Miss Zombie (Sabu, 2013) 4
6. Godzilla / Gojira (Ishirô Honda, 1954) 7
7. Floating Weeds / Ukikosa (Yasujirô Ozu, 1959) 8+
8. [125 mins] TV episodes
Neon Genesis Evangelion Ep1-5 / Shin Seiki Evangerion (Hideaki Anno, 1995-1996) 7
9. Street of Shame / Akasen chitai (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1956) 7
10. When the Last Sword is Drawn / Mibu gishi den (Yôjirô Takita, 2002) 7+
11. The Third Murder / Sandome no satsujin (Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2017) 7

13. [125 mins] TV episodes
Neon Genesis Evangelion Ep6-10 / Shin Seiki Evangerion (Hideaki Anno, 1995-1996) 7
I was about to give up as I found 5-8 episodes were going a little repetitive, and somehow childish, far from the graphical heights and promises of more adult psycho-sci-fi from the first episodes but 9 and 10 were really good again so I guess I will go through another batch of 5 for the challenge. Amazed by the similarities with Pacific Rim btw.
14. There Was a Father / Chichi ariki (Yasujirô Ozu, 1942) 7-
15. Our House / Watashitachi no ie (Yui Kiyohara, 2017) 6
16. The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer / Ningen no jôken (Masaki Kobayashi, 1961) 7+
Final verdict: 2>3>1
17. [125 mins] TV episodes
Neon Genesis Evangelion Ep11-15 / Shin Seiki Evangerion (Hideaki Anno, 1995-1996) 7+

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

I think my post for the bonus challenge was missed? No need to recalculate but I take my one extra point if it's even correct. :D
Indeed, totally missed it ! You got 12 points and all guesses were correct…

This is taking points away from Albajos (now 6 points - 3 guesses left) and Flavo (now 10 points - 3 guesses left).

Tony Rayns provides a very insightful analysis of the trilogy on the blue ray box release.

I found it excellent at setting up the period, explaining the linking the three films, and providing his thoughts on what the films were attempting.

Hi hurluberlu!

I watched a few from Japan. Sorry for not reporting them in a more timely fashion. I've been in bed with measles for the last couple of days and didn't have the energy to turn on the laptop until now. I don't know whether you would mind adding my viewings to the results. I would like to maintain my 100% appearance record in 2019, if possible.

1. Kurutta ippêji (1926, Teinosuke Kinugasa) / 9.5/10
2. Midareru (1964, Mikio Naruse) / 9/10
3. Shinkansen daibakuha (1975, Jun'ya Satô) / 7.5/10 (US cut)
4. Kaguyahime no monogatari (2013, Isao Takahata) / 8.5 or 9/10

That's all, folks!

Tony Rayns provides a very insightful analysis of the trilogy on the blue ray box release.

I found it excellent at setting up the period, explaining the linking the three films, and providing his thoughts on what the films were attempting.
Yes, I always like Tony Rayns explanations on the Arrow or Master of Cinema blurays.
