80. Intentions of Murder (1964, Shôhei Imamura) - 8/10
ICM
July Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

7. Pitfall (Teshigahara, 1962)
This is a strange, intriguing, bizarre, and ultimately satisfying trip into surrealism, ghost stories, and industrial unionism.

8. Survive Style 5+ (Sekiguchi, 2004)
Deeply uninteresting.

FTV:27:Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (1974) 7

Image

Continuing the standard set with the first, Arrow present a wonderful transfer, featuring a picture quality pure as the driven snowblood and a clean soundtrack.

Having the easy option presented to them of just doing a re-run of the original, the screenplay by Kiyohide Ohara/ Norio Osada and the returning Kazuo Kamimura take the welcomed option of drawing swords from a different direction in their adaptation of Kazuo Koike’s Manga, this time clashing to political skulduggery. Out for her own revenge the first time, the writers build tension on this return by placing Snowblood in the middle of the battle between head of secret police Kikuib and enemy of the state rebel Tokunaga, who brings out a great alteration in the mind-set of Snowblood, thanks to her initial mission to spy on Tokunaga, becoming laced with doubt as she learns who Tokunaga (and the ruthless Kikuib really are.)

Displaying some signs of having been over-ambitious on a limited budget, returning director Toshiya Fujita reunites with cinematographer Tatsuo Suzuki, and fills in on the political battles of the era with drawings and a narration, both of which feel misplaced within the sparkling visuals the rest of the movie is filled with. Building upon the action in part 1,Fujita & Suzuki true showmanship in the thrilling Pinky Violence Action set-pieces,expanded here to graceful wide tracking shots catching each move from Snowblood, and landing into hyper-stylised first person sword fights (!) jabbed with the spray of red mist scattered across the screen. Entering undercover as a spy, Fujita brings Snowblood onto Tokunaga’s side with excellent long panning shots into the hidden surroundings of Tokunaga’s life. Coming back in a blaze of glory,Meiko Kaji gives a exciting performance as Snowblood, whose shoulders Kaji has this time weighed down with the desire of wanting to help the needs of others for the love song of vengeance.

10. 3.0* - The Choice of Hercules [Totsunyûseyo! Asama Sansô Jiken] by Masato Harada (2002)
An interesting take on the classic hostage thriller. Rather than focus on the criminals and the hostages, Harada singles out the administrative hell hole that opens up when local and national police corpses are forced to work together to defuse the situation. A bit long and a little scruffy in places, but Harada is a fine director and delivers an amusing film.

Image

11. 3.5* - 12 Suicidal Teens [Jûni-nin no Shinitai Kodomo-tachi] by Yukihiko Tsutsumi (2019)
Tsutsumi's slightly twisted take on 12 Angry Men. The first half hour is spent setting up the mystery, the following 90 minutes are a roller coaster of twists and revelations. Even though the film looks very stylish and the direction is on point, the film is a little too talkative to make a smashing impression. Well recommended to people who dig twisty narratives.

Set in Victorian England, this Japanese anime benefits from unconventional setting and unusual ultramodern technology (all steam, not electric/battery powered). The animation - full of detailed British backdrops and buildings - is impressive too. The story and characters are not quite as immersive. The whole thing pretty much just amounts to a MacGuffin chase thriller, while the snobbish main girl (who insists on being called "Miss") really annoyed me.

The story is a bit all over the place here, jumping between various characters, but in the midst of it all is a very neat electric-sheep dynamic as a robot girl tries to contend with the fact that she might not actually be human as she has been programmed to believe. The film also benefits from some amazing newfangled backgrounds (see above) though it feels odd how basic the character animation is compared to the animated set design.

FTV:28:Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (2012) 6

Image

Fittingly set in a house which the residence can’t escape from, the movie for years appeared stuck from ever seeing the light of day,as it went from being filmed in 1995,not edited until 2005,fully wrapped up in 2009,only to be left on the shelf until it finally reached DVD-R in 2012!

Filmed before a new wave of J-Horror hit, the passing of time give writer/director/ star Shinichi Fukazawa’s creation a rough-edge eerie atmosphere, seeping from the graininess of shooting on video wrapped round grubby Splatter Horror shocks. Inspired from The Evil Dead (1981-also reviewed) in a swift haunted house/cabin tale and wacky jet-black comedy visual gags, Fukazawa yanks a tree branch and turns the flick into it’s own gleefully nuts Horror, thanks to handmade practical effects of a laughing head, a stop-motion headless body, and spider-like hands all being drenched in blood when running towards the body builder in hell.

FTV:29: Maruhi: jorô ichiba/Secret Chronicle: Prostitution Market (1972) 7.

Image

Going against the traditional Gridhouse grime of the genre, director Chusei Sone turns Oshin’s Pinku tricks with a playfully cheeky saucy Sex Comedy atmosphere, that stamps all over the self-importance of historical films with genuinely funny set-pieces of clueless Oshin being seduced by a scar-face lover boy who believes his eyes are enough to charm any women, plus jumping with glee into a match with a sumo wrestler, who joins the scar-face in losing to a less than happy ending. Along with the slap-stick gags, Sone also undresses a sensual side to the Pinku, circling Oshin experiencing pleasure from a woman, and closing on a surprisingly tragic incest twist, where close-ups Oshin’s lust finally fully exposed, but the perverse love she had dead underneath. Utterly clueless when sold to the brothel, sexy Yuko Katagiri skips Oshin stupidity over from becoming grating, thanks to bringing out a sweetness in Oshin’s total lack of awareness about being in a prostitution market.

FTV:30:I Am Keiko (1997) 6

Breaking the 4th wall with a clapperboard click in the opening shot,writer/directing auteur Sion Sono threads the audience on the passage of time across the reels of film, ringing in to long, stilted shots of a clock fading to clocks facing the camera as Keiko faces the viewers. Sitting down in just one room, Sono continues to display the developmental in his eye for colour, via looking towards Keiko with strikingly bright plain red, green and blue backdrop, subtly highlighting the darkness in the dialogue.

Talking directly to the audience, the screenplay by Sono opens the box on a thoughtful study of depression, unwrapped in Keiko talking about the death of her dad from cancer, and the feeling of time and life continuing to countdown to a emptiness which beeps on a blank answer machine. Later working with Sono again on Suicide Club (2001) Keiko Suzuki gives a delicate turn as Keiko, bringing out in her fragile voice the withdrawn state of Keiko.

Hello from across the other pondShow
1. Battle Royale (2000k Kinji Fukasaku)

4. Dead or Alive: Final (2002, Takashi Miike)
5. Jaws in Japan (2009, John Hijiri)
6. Throne of Blood (1957, Kurosawa)

"8. Shorts (68m):
Dan Petor y Kyoushu no Yuutsu (2002, 10m)
End of the World (2002, 11m)
Garakuta no Machi (2006, 13m)
Cat Soup (2001, 34m)"
9. Paprika (2006, Satoshi Kon)
I've liked the other two Kon's I've seen (Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress), but this didn't work for me, almost entirely because of the fantasy elements. Cool coloring and imagery, but the story veered too far away from reality and made me bored.

Damn it took me years to finally find this online!
I was a fan of the tv show when it came out so it was a lot of fun to meet with these virgins again in this tv special. It has a running time of just 52 minutes but there's enough mystery to have a great time. It's just so juvenile and hentai in a cute way. The minicarporn stuff was hilarious and something new to the series. I would love to spend a day in the shooting of this tv show/movies.. Sion Sono shows his fascination for the passage of time again with the rolling credits and the reference to "Why Don't You Play in Hell?" warmed my heart as it's one of my favourite movies of all time. Would you rather save the world or lose your virginity?

Don't know what it feels like beeing from Korean nationality and living in Japan in the early 00s, but feeling like you don't belong nowhere has always been one of my favourite subjects in movies. The fighting sequences are like what you see in anime, but the movie never loses its dramatic tone.
The romance is super sweet. The story always focuses on the main character's feelings towards his friends, his parents and his country. I believe this is one of the strongest scripts written by Kankurô Kudô, best known for his more comedic style.

Tadanobu Asano in his 20s has to be the sexiest man who has ever walked on Earth.
This was a pretty good rewatch in so many years. One of my favourites from Gakuryuu Ishii, just behind August in the Water (which is also very similar in its mood and atmosphere but not quite as powerful as that one for me). Simply a gem that must not be forgotten.

I prefer Blessing Bell, then again I'm a huge Susumu Terajima fan. But Monday is such a great, fun film and so terribly overlooked.
And still no EN-friendly release :(

09. Rurôni Kenshin: Kyôto taika-hen by Keishi Ohtomo (2014) 7,5/10

Not great cinema, but this was so entertaining to watch I just had a lot of fun...

10. Rurôni Kenshin: Densetsu no saigo-hen, by Keishi Ohtomo (2014) 7,5/10

This trilogy ends quite well, with a thrilling final fight and many beloved characters getting a resolution of their own. This Kenshin trilogy was very well done.

11. Burai hijô, by Mio Ezaki (1969) 6/10

Still entertaining, but the repeated patterns applied to new characters don't work that well.

Thanks for hosting, hurlu. No more updates from me unfortunately (ran out of time). Still, I made a decent dent in the Paste Anime list and went up over 1000 places in the ranks. That's certainly something.

9. Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953)

This was my 4,000th check! And ... well ... I just don't see what all the hype is about. This is a decent family drama and little else. One of the best movies ever? This movie?!?! I just don't get it. It's neither a great movie nor a bad one. It just doesn't feel special at all. I think some movies become canonical, and then the canon becomes self-reinforcing.

I always try to see a very highly praised or notable movie for every round number check (I saw The Deer Hunter for my 1,000th check and Grave of the Fireflies for 3,500). I'm usually a bit underwhelmed, which maybe means that the hype unfairly colors my expectations ahead of time.

FTV:20:Black Lizard (1962) 10.

Bonus challenge:

Watch one film with Machiko Kyô -tick.

Watch four films from four different decades-tick.

“The best daughter in Japan, the best diamond in Japan, and the best private detective in Japan.”

Greeting the viewer in the 4th wall breaking pre-credits intro, directing auteur Umetsugu Inoue with cinematographer Yoshihisa Nakagawa continues to build upon his distinctive, lavish ultra-stylisation, here dipping into surreal startling lights, flashing on the shared inner thoughts (spoken at the viewer) between the Black Lizard and Akechi. Intelligently using the catchy Jazzy songs to set a Caper atmosphere, Inoue sets Black Lizard’s target to be the Iwase household, lavishly decorated in graceful panning shots eyeing Black Lizard’s in the midst of her kidnapping games against immaculately styled Technicolor walls, perfectly colour-coded by Inoue to Black Lizard’s sparkling costumes and her magnificently brash, funky lair.

Adapting Rampo Edogawa’s novel and Yukio Mishima’s earlier stage version, the screenplay by Kaneto Shindo moves at a incredible pace, breaking from any risk of stage-bound by fluid Caper twists of Lizard and her team of minions snapping at the heels of the Iwase household. Giving Lizard all the glamour of a master thief, Shindo smoothly crosses the Caper antics with a utterly delightful underlining romance between the thief and obsessive detective Akechi, causing Black Lizard to kiss a sofa (!) and for Akechi to bring out a fitting bitter sweetness which walks into the bright light final.

The person everyone wants to get their hands on, cute Junko Kano gives a great turn as Sanae Iwase, who Kano takes from a biting back sharpness,to a quick- witted eye to slip out of Lizard’s grasp. Loving the mastery of the legendary thief, exceptional Minoru Oki hits laid-back cool notes as Akechi gets into the groove of trying to remain one step ahead. Performing her misdeeds with a seductive relish, alluring Machiko Kyo gives a fabulous performance as Black Lizard/ Mrs. Midorikawa, whose heart is filled by Kyo with a love for the art of the (stealing) deal.

When I first saw "Black Lizard" in your post I thought you were talking about Fukasaku's relatively lackluster version, made just 6 years later ... Seeing you hand this one 10/10, especially given my poor luck this challenge, made me jump on this one. Hopefully it has a lot more to offer. Only seen one Inoe, Daisan no kagemusha, quite a good film, but not great. Already had some of his films lined up however, and will dive deeper.
Hi Gloede! I hope you had a good weekend, and I'm really sorry about the reply being so late. Now I've seen a few of his films, Inoue actually reminds me a bit of Willi Forst! Not only in their shared love of putting music on screen, but also both paying a real attention to detail, to give their films a lavish, glossy appearance.
