The 21st Century Challenge

Goal:
Watch as many movies from 2000-2019 as possible (from September 1, 2019 to September 30, 2019).

Rules:
- Movies from 2000-2019 are eligble.
- A feature film (anything 40 minutes or over) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- For Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series with shorter episodes, the 60 minute rule applies.
- 120 minutes of TV episodes counts as one entry.
- Rewatches allowed.

I mean, I grew up at the right time so that movie hit me, but that is one of the better parody films out there. I love that one.

It really is, sadly garbage like Date Movie and Epic Movie overshadowed this one.

FTV:1:Chaos/ Kaosu(2000)10

Controlling the chaos with rain bookending the film, (a recurring motif across his credits) directing auteur Hideo Nakata brings the stilted silent dread of Horror into this twist towards psychological Thriller/Neo-Noir, stringing the long black hair chills out with cinematographer Tokusho Kikumura, down winding tracking shots and unsettlingly long takes wide-shots held on the palpable fear of another twist bending in the kidnapping plan.

Backed by the primal rage of tribal drums from his regular composer Kenji Kawai, Nakata weaves a measured atmosphere to tightening the knots, patting the blues and yellows during the murky dealings down to dust, blemished with smacks of red when the kidnapping goes off the rails, sealed in startling close-ups aimed at when a new element to the tale is revealed.

Leaving the dining table with Saori in the opening,Hisashi Saito’s adaptation of Shogo Utano's novel Sarawaretai Onna/The Woman Who Wants to Be Kidnapped pays immaculate attention to the layering of the dialogue brewing psychological anxiety over Saori’s kidnapping being not what it appears, thanks to Saito bringing an importance to the dialogue in turning the screws on the image Saori,her husband, kidnapper Kuroda and model Satomi makes people believe is their true selves. Placing the paths coming together between Kuroda/ Saori’s husband Komiyama and model Satomi on a high level of pure chance, Saito impressively makes this work with a thrilling dovetail deconstruction, via first playing out Saori’s kidnapping straight, then folding each corner to the power-playing being twisted under the skin.

Reuniting with Nakata after Ringu, Miki Nakatani gives a utterly mesmerising dual performance as Saori/ Satomi, burning with a refined, Femme Fatale seductiveness as Saori, paired up to a seeping into knife-edge madness Satomi, who holds Komiyama and Kuroda’s gaze as a almost mirage presence to their desires. Finding himself thrown into the middle of mind-games, Masato Hagiwara gives a great turn as kidnapper Kuroda,who Hagiwara has firmly attempt to do everything by the book, but becomes increasingly tied to the chaos.

Won't lie - I'm slightly annoyed Coryn didn't say it was a Top Ten film for pun-making purposes.

But the film itself is great - loved the insight and dialogue there.

I was actually just Joking about being top 5 in ranking at time of posting

Dah is not top 5 for me by a mile. Its very original and interesting for sure but eventually i thought more couldve been done with it.

What did you think of those? I'll certainly confess to taking delight in many of those people's misery, but the docs didn't do all that much for me.

Well, the Netflix one is the best one. But Hulu do interview McFarland as well, but of course he lies all the way, so it's kind of pointless to use him anyway.

For me, that takes half a year just to make a party of 30, it's utterly reidicolous that someone thought they could make a festival, in another country, in 3 months.
I thought millenials were sensible, but apparently I'm not in the moment with the social media crowd.

1. Red Sparrow (2018)
I have a pretty high standard for spy movies, and this one doesn't come close to meeting it. If you need further discouragement, the world's foremost terrorist organization published a very enthusiastic review of the book the movie was based on. Yes, the CIA apparently does book reviews.

2. 42 (2013)
Half decent sports biopic. Given that the sports genre and the biopic genre might be the most reliably bad genres out there, this movie does pretty well. The heart of the movie is the relationship between Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, and it's actually depicted with some authenticity. Harrison Ford did a good job, which I knew was within his capacity, but I thought he had grown too old and grumpy to put in the actual effort.

3. Widows (2018)
A heist movie that's not really a heist movie but rather a portrait of urban life and private grief. All the moving pieces (and there are some good ones, especially the crooked politicians and the gangsters trying to get into politics) don't quite fit together, though. Give credit to Daniel Kaluuya and Colin Farrell for stealing the movie. Steve McQueen had such a successful track record that he can be forgiven for making only an OK movie.

Heh - Netflix is certainly better and Hulu had a different perspective, which was nice. But yeah - I mean, I planned a dinner part of 6, including my wife and I, for her birthday. That took me over a week.

1. The Wind Rises (Miyazaki, 2013). If this really does turn out to be Miyazaki's last movie, it's a good one to go out on. Not his greatest most magical movie, but but definitely his most mature work.

Booksmart may be the most fun I had with an American comedy in some time. I can see why everybody brings up Superbad but this one is a lot smarter. I wonder if it's going to be noticed by the Golden Globes. Oh yeah, John Wick 3 is awesome as well.

1. Kung Fu Hustle (2004)
Kicked off the challenge with a rewatch - I wanted fun and funny and this was on Netflix. And it's awesome. So much fun - I got a lot more out of it this time, as I caught more film and style references. Great coloring, fun stylized violence, and hilarious.

2. The Family: Dictators, Murders, & Thieves (2019)
3. The Family: Wolf King (2019)
And this finishes out the Netflix docuseries. This is about "The Family", a secretive religious group that's all about power in politics. I personally found this series terrifying.

4. Kathleen Madigan: Gone Madigan (2010)
And then I went on a stand-up binge. I've been getting into Kathleen Madigan quite a bit lately, and I haven't seen this special for years, so I dove in. I like her two later specials better, but this was still hilarious. My parents are getting to the age of her parents, and she's a little older than I am, so much of her comedy hits close to home.

5. Jim Gaffigan: Quality Time (2019)
This is probably the weakest special of his I've seen. There were some laugh-out-loud moments in there, but a lot of tired subjects and weird topics. The meta-jokes about doing 10 minutes on horse jokes were kinda funny, but it was 10 minutes on horse jokes. If you're on the fence about him, I'd suggest skipping this special.

6. Tom Papa: Freaked Out (2013)
Another rewatch of a special I haven't seen in a while. Tom Papa is a bit hit-and-miss with me; some of his material lands, some doesn't. It's a 6/10 special for me.
