05. Tou Ze / A simple life, by Ann Hui (2011) 9/10

I was deeply moved by this film. The acting is subtle and sweet, the characters are so real you feel you get to know them. Certainly one of the highlights of by month, and I will look more closely into Hui's carreer.

Mala Powers is rather overwrought in the lead role here, but her tale is magnificently visualised by Lupino with noir-like lighting and daunting high camera angles as she flees her assailant at night in eerie silence (see above) and as her memories begin to haunt her late in the piece. There is also a great bit in which Lupino thoughtfully uses close-ups to show how overwhelmed she is when grilled at a police lineup. The narrative sags a little in the middle with a lot of fluffy romance, but the final twenty or so minutes are very well done if a little didactic.

This comedy has been termed a white trash version of Forrest Gump, but without David Spade being at any pivotal historical events, his tale is nowhere near as interesting, and the majority of the humour is very lowbrow, involving canine testicles and childish scatological gags. Then there is the fact that the way he survived between ages eight and adulthood is shied over when it is the most intriguing. None of the messages really resonate either. Bits and pieces certainly are funny though - the Silence of the Lambs parody in particular.

It sounds intriguing enough as this documentary aspires to provide an insight into a "closed city" of Cold War Russia where scientists were employed to work on nuclear projects with detrimental health effects. Still closed today though, the filmmakers struggle to make a movie out of the interviews of a mere handful of former residents and very limited footage of the city. Lacking in these areas, the film instead goes off on tangents about Chernobyl and Russian chemical poisoning of former citizens overseas - tangents ultimately more interesting than the actual topic.

I think I agree with your assessment, too. I watched it about 2.5 years ago, and while I remember liking learning some of the information presented in the documentary, I don't really remember it as a coherent art piece. Still interesting.

131. Rue cases nègres (1983) a.k.a. Sugar Cane Alley
Director: Euzhan Palcy
Interesting insights into a specific culture I wasn't familiar with.

Image
132. Évolution (2015)
Director: Lucile Hadzihalilovic
Knowing going in that this was from the director of Innocence. I had certain expectations of slow weirdness that were certainly met and in some ways surpassed in its oddball story of strange experiments being performed on boys.

Image
133. Revenge (2017)
Director: Coralie Fargeat
So I'm generally not into the rape/revenge sub-genre but I will say that the "revenge" aspect of this one was so ridiculous it at least merits mentioning. Despite the fact that the heroine should've died several different times over the course of the movie from various injuries including being impaled on a tree after falling off a 100 ft cliff, she not only survives but appears totally fine with the situation not long after it happens. The people in this movie seem to have like three or four humans worth of blood in their bodies. So laughably implausible...

Image
134. Real Women Have Curves (2002)
Director: Patricia Cardoso
Like in other things I've seen her in, America Ferrara shines and just seems to have a natural charisma. The film has a good message despite its pretty traditional and predictable story arc.

Image
135. Earth (1998)
Director: Deepa Mehta
Hm, well. It's not 3 hours long and Amir Kahn plays a backstabbing bastard. I've certainly seen a lot worse from India.

Image
136. The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)
Director: Katt Shea
So at one point a character in this (not good) movie references Scream. Does that mean that Scream exists as a movie in the universe of Carrie 2? And with Scream's constant nods to prior horror films, does that mean the original Carrie exists as a movie in the Carrie 2 universe? But then also the events of Carrie also referenced to have happened in the Carrie 2 universe so does that mean that the Carrie movie in the Carrie 2 universe is some kind of documentary or dramatization of events that actually transpired? Maybe I'm giving this crappy direct-to-video sequel too much thought.

Image
137. Jane B. par Agnès V. (1988)
138. Kung-fu master! (1988)
Director: Agnès Varda
Of the two, I liked Jane B. more, showcasing Varda's playful documentary sense again. Kung Fu Master is a solid flick as well but the central theme is a little icky.

Image
139-143. Blood Blockade Battlefront S1E1-13, E10.5, OVA
Director: Rie Matsumoto
Batshit crazy anime that barely remains coherent. About a guy who joins a shadowy organization fighting all manner if weird nonsense. The visuals are electrifying but the plot is usually total nonsense. From the director of Kyosougiga and definitely has a similar visually arresting but gibberish story vibe.

I think I agree with your assessment, too. I watched it about 2.5 years ago, and while I remember liking learning some of the information presented in the documentary, I don't really remember it as a coherent art piece. Still interesting.
Yeah, it's a shame that the filmmakers were not able to do more with the material since I generally dig nuclear documentaries (I would highly recommend Radium City and Into Eternity as alternatives of sorts).

The plot does not make much sense here, but when one factors in that the film was partially re-written, re-shot and re-edited after a creative differences dispute, the grating incoherency is understandable. And yet, if underwhelming as a narrative, the film drums up oodles of atmosphere purely through eerie music, good location scouting and thoughtful lighting choices (see above). The various creatures and practical special effects are pretty amazing too, from throbbing veins a la Scanners, to gooey oozing monsters, to gigantic spiders, etc.

If you like nuclear docs, take a glance at Atomic Homefront. It's about how the US government pretty much just dumped the waste from the Manhattan project in Missouri, USA, and now the citizens who live there are sick and dying and fighting back to get the government to clean it up. It's also directed by a woman... (on HBO and Kanopy).

37. History Lessons (2000, Barbara Hammer)
To honor her passing, I watched this Barbara Hammer film. Interesting editing approach, putting lesbians into historical context through a variety of techniques. I can't say it was gripping in any way, but when I found my attention waning, I also found myself getting confused, wondering if some of what what being shown actually happened. It could be very immersive if you were in the right mood. Pretty glad I watched it.

38. The Vietnam War: The Weight of Memory (2017, Ken Burns & Lynn Novick)
End of the Burns/Novick miniseries. More comments in the War challenge, but this was a fascinating and informative series. Loved it.

7. Captain Marvel (Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, 2019) - not particularly memorable
8. The Tale (Fox, 2018) - powerful film, probably the standout of what I've seen for this challenge, though Capernaum & Leave No Trace also strong.

7. City of God
I hadn't seen it in about 15 years. It holds up very well against my memories.

8. Summer 1993
Wow this was a boring movie. I don't think it would be nearly so popular if the kids weren't very cute.

9. Mudbound
Very strong movie

:poshclap:

I think I agree with your assessment, too. I watched it about 2.5 years ago, and while I remember liking learning some of the information presented in the documentary, I don't really remember it as a coherent art piece. Still interesting.
Yeah, it's a shame that the filmmakers were not able to do more with the material since I generally dig nuclear documentaries (I would highly recommend Radium City and Into Eternity as alternatives of sorts).
Argh. So many films, so little time. I'll make a note of that one so that I remember it for next year if I don't manage to squeeze it in during the next three days. Though, truth be told, I'd probably get more out of it than the mindless comedies that I am watching to relax after work this week, like...

This comedy has a handful of fun moments including an over-the-top nightmare and a series of robot toys talking in unison, but the story only really comes alive during the second half as the jilted husbands team up to take revenge and as the protagonist's mother gets involved. The first half is not boring as such, but the humour generally varies from lame to simply icky, with some very unfunny moments as his father keeps mistakenly thinking that his son is "a fruit" due to a series of unlikely coincidences. Patrick Dempsey does not make for an especially lead either.

This future-set thriller film is burdened by an overly complex mythology with far too much narrated exposition. The first half of the motion picture also smacks of 'been there, done that' with corrupt leaders, a seeming utopia that is actually a dystopia and so on. Things improve a lot in the second half though as the solution to the mystery is revealed and leaves quite a bit to ponder in terms of personal identity issues. The movie also benefits from imaginatively curved sets throughout, creative costumes and some fascinating futuristic technology.

Those 4 get a 1,25 average rating from me. Chipwrecked is probably the worst though.

DORIS WISHMAN DAY!!

150. The Prince and the Nature Girl (1965)
151. Deadly Weapons (1974)
152. Double Agent 73 (1974)
153. The Immoral Three (1975)
154. A Night to Dismember (1983)
Director: Doris Wishman
Yesterday I pretty much buckled down and went for a Doris Wishman marathon and I gotta say, while Doris Wishman's flicks are possibly even more incompetently made than Roberta Findlay's films, they are arguably more entertaining in "what the crap am I watching" kind of way. Prince and the Nature Girl was a pretty standard nudie cutie but Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 are totally ridiculous, leveraging Chesty Morgan's "assets" in increasingly silly and outrageous ways. The Immoral Three, while sans Chesty Morgan, still has a sort of insane spy plot that gives it a similar vibe to the Morgan movies. A Night to Dismember may be Wishman's pièce de résistance, an incoherent mess of batshit insanity that makes one feel like you're trapped in a maddening fever dream of bad acting, confusing jump cuts, terrible gore effects and the most amazingly awful narration since Plan 9 from Outer Space. All in all, Wishman Day was a hoot.

The plot here is pretty daft and with a formulaic love interest and a pot-loving dog (see above) in the mix, the movie never drums up much urgency regarding the stoners' friend being in jail. The characters are all quite likeable individuals though and while the jokes are of the hit-and-miss variety, there are some very funny sequences - an innovative $8 date and a rehab session in which our hero is heckled in particular. The cameos are pretty decent too with the likes of Jon Stewart as an Enhancent Smoker and Willie Nelson having some fun brief scenes.

Rest in peace, Agnes Varda. She is another great auteur that has left us this month. In the next few days, please celebrate her life by watching her films.

:rip: I was delighted to see so many of Varda's films watched for this challenge this year. It's great to see her still being recognized for her originality, innovation and excellence. Watching Faces Places for the first time this year I noticed that she was slowing down physically so I'm not surprised by her passing. I hope her final days passed with more pleasure than pain and that somewhere she is reunited with Jacques Demy. It seems like he was always with her in spirit, even on this earth. I'm sad that there won't be a new Varda film to watch for this challenge in coming years but I still have several of her classics yet to see. Long live A.V.! :worship:

P.S. A great photo is worth repeating, hurlu - especially relevant for this challenge!
