Sheesh, this has just been one busy month for me, so I've watched far less than I thought I would.

2. La Pointe-Courte (Varda, 1955). Not bad, a bit on the rigid/stylistic side, but it makes a nice counterpoint to the relaxed atmosphere of the fishing village. A good debut.

This has some charming moments as each of the three confirmed bachelor gradually awaken paternal instincts that they never thought they had, but the comedy-based first hour here is far superior to the rest. The gags vary from fish-out-water funniness as they have trouble finding the right size diapers and push the patience of a female pharmacist, to pure zaniness with a drug smuggling subplot that has them shadowed by incompetent policemen. The final half-hour or so is pretty sentimental stuff by comparison and only goes in obvious directions.

FTV:21: Lilac (1932) 9

“The creeping glove!”

Image

Opening and closing with the same long panning shot of soldiers marching pass as boys play soldiers/ cops and robbers, co-writer/(with Dorothy Farnum and Serge Veber) directing auteur Anatole Litvak & cinematographer Curt Courant bring the tale full circle with Litvak’s continuing motif of crossing the Melodrama and Film Noir. Tracking down the seedy corridors of Lilac’s workplace, Litvak holds Lilac up as a shining light In a building darkened by murky cops and robbers, as beautifully held soft close-ups lock eyes on Lilac’s love, and circling wide-shots in the buildings during mass sing-songs touch on rare moments of true companionship in the place. Pulling the opening shot down to a dead body, Litvak superbly seeps in the Film Noir doubt Lilac has over who she can trust, in striking side angle shots uncovering what is out of Lilac’s vision, leading to an astonishingly highly-stylised set-piece of Lilac running away from monstrous faces covering the screen driving her to madness.

While the limited settings do signal the Charles-Henry Hirsch and Tristan Bernard’s stage origins, Farnum, Veber and Litvak’s adaptation wonderfully breaks the stage down in the interplay between the Melodrama of Lucot keeping his cover round the falling in love Lilac, with the forensic Film Noir investigative work Lilac is doing with his fellow officers to solve the murder and check to see if Lilac herself lines up to clues of the identity of the killer. Working as a temptation to Lilac and a determined cop, Andre Luguet gives a terrific performance as Lucot, who is given a sweet reserved nature when Lilac, that Luguet twists into a quick-witted spring the moment a clue pops up. Shining in the middle of the dirt surrounding her, Marcelle Romeo (who tragically died in 1932 from a suicide age 29) gives a mesmerising performance as Lilac, thanks to Romeo capturing in her expressive face the wave of love running across Lilac’s lips for Lucot, with a bubbling doubt over Lucot’s honesty to her over his real job.

3. Fat Girl (Breillat, 2001). I'm not sure what the hell I just watched... An exploitation movie with an intellectual veneer? A primal sexual fantasy masquerading as art? Something else entirely? In any case:

SpoilerShow
1. Zou Zou (Allegret, 1934)
2. La Pointe-Courte (Varda, 1955)
3. Fat Girl (Breillat, 2001)

French Fried FlicksShow

1. Loin du Vietnam / Far From Vietnam (Jean-Luc Godard/Joris Ivens/William Klein/Claude Lelouch/Chis Marker/Alain Resnais/Agnès Varda, 1967)
2. La musica / The Music (Marguerite Duras/Paul Seban, 1967)
3. Au revoir les enfants / Goodbye Children (Louis Malle, 1987)
4. Détruire dit-elle / Destroy, She Said (Marguerite Duras, 1969)
5. L'adolescente / An Adolescent Girl (Jeanne Moreau, 1979)
6. Jaune le soleil / Yellow the Sun (Marguerite Duras, 1971)

One of the director's most obscure films - I but I guess that's like saying one of Lav Diaz' longer films - and on a first viewing I'd have to say I'm not surprised. This is more difficult to comprehend on a narrative level than the previous two films or the next, Nathalie Granger, and it doesn't offer as much interest from a technical or aesthetic perspective either - the soundtrack isn't as dense or exciting, the visuals aren't that entrancing. Duras actually can make people sitting around, talking, walking back and forth in a room or two seem pretty interesting, but in this "story" about some people who may or may not be Jews, talking about crimes committed by another person who might be a Jew, and the connections in their minds between "Jew" and "communist", I really had no idea where things were going or what it all was going to add up to, and didn't much care. At least it was, like most of her films, fairly short, and we do get the great Michael Lonsdale in the last few minutes, and there were some moments where I started to feel like I was connecting a bit to what she was doing...but they faded quickly. I'm sure it will profit from another viewing some day - but less sure than I usually am with Duras. And less interested.

7. Nathalie Granger (Marguerite Duras, 1972) (re-watch)

This was the earliest Duras-directed film that I saw at a terrific retrospective at Facets in Chicago, in 1996 if I'm remembering right - they also showed the earlier Moderato cantabile which she scripted, and several later films. I had little memory of it - Jeanne Moreau's pant suit, and the black cat that wanders in and out of scenes throughout the film, and Gérard Depardieu's very funny performance as a washing-machine salesman who gets progressively more and more nervous as Moreau keeps asserting that he isn't a salesman. This I think is where the director's ability to juxtapose sound and image in a way that nobody else really had done comes into it's own, over most of the film. The radio with it's broadcasts about escaped criminals, the various sounds that may or may not be live from the set, the dialogues between Moreau and Lucia Bosé about Bosé's daughter and her problems in school, the piano music played by the daughter - or not - and a sense of odd mystery over everything, a suburban house that seems too large and where the front on the street doesn't seem to match the back on - a canal? A large pool? It all seems borderline surreal, without anything actually surreal happening, and I feel like I'm getting snatches of several "plots" mixed together in an order which I don't fully get. In short vintage Duras. I really need to start watching these films in the morning just after coffee though...

8. La chienne / The Bitch (Jean Renoir, 1931)

I've seen Fritz Lang's American remake Scarlet Street a few times, and just wasn't ever sure whether I'd ever seen the original - but on viewing it now I can say that I probably hadn't - if I did it was one of those second-in-a-double-feature after working 8-9 hours experiences, sleeping and dreaming only bits of the film. It's a famous enough film as is the remake so I don't care to go much into the plot; it's curious that it both starts and ends with a bit of humor, with a couple of puppets at the beginning telling us first that it's a crime story, and next that no, it's a comedy - and the fact that Michel Simon, known as much for his comic ability as anything else, plays one of the male leads might also lead us to think this is going to be a "lighter" affair than the gloomy, doom-laden Lang film. But overall it's not, and the comedy is really more in the form of bitter satire than anything else - while Lang's film seems to suggest that fate will destroy us no matter what, that God is against us and that we always fall prey to our darkest and most dangerous desires, this suggests... actually pretty much the same thing, though I think that it is ultimately less all-encompassing in it's nihilism than Lang, and the focus is, unfortunately, a little bit more on the Evil of Women than of us all - Janie Marèse as Lulu is both weaker and meaner than Joan Bennett, and Magdeleine Bérubet as Simon's wife is thoroughly unpleasant, while all the men - bad as they are - are allowed to be a little funny, a little lighthearted. It's still a pretty excellent film and the ironies in the drawn-out third act are as potent as they are in Lang, but on the whole I'm pretty sure I prefer the remake at this point, and I don't know that I'd put this among Renoir's very best.

“It doesn't matter if a gentlemen was born poor or born rich, they swoop down on him and cry for vengeance.”

Image

FTV:22:Boomerang (1976) 6

Putting the opening credits against what turns out to be the final freeze frame, co-writer/(with Alain Delon and Monica Venturini ) directing auteur Jose Giovanni & cinematographer Pierre-William Glenn also bookend the title with dips into the Italian Crime genre, via the opening drug-fuelled murder of a cop being shot in a stylishly hazy first person view, and a closing high-speed break out ending on a slow-motion splint across the border. In the middle of these bookends, Giovanni continues the clinical dissection motif which covers his entire work, with tightly held two-shots unmasking the regret Eddy has for being behind bars, and Jacques regret for having to go back to the old ways.

Holding back from gangster thrills, the writers instead drill into the tensely coiled drama of Jacques attempt to hold onto the new life he is trying to create, as a tug of war unfolds between the press uncovering his pass thanks to son Eddy’s crime, and Jacques proving to himself that he is not the gangster of old. Looking at the choices placed in front of him,Alain Delon gives an icy turn as Jacques, with Delon digging into Jacques attempt to do things by the book, until his old life boomerangs.

FTV:23:Fantômas (1932) 8

Image

Housed the same year as James Whale’s The Old Dark House, co-writer/(with Anne Mauclair) director Pal Fejos & cinematographer J. Peverell Marley key the opening 30 minutes as a chilly Old Dark House mystery, spanning expressionism-style high walls slotted round the house, and a excellent sound design filling the rooms with the noise of a rustling wind as Fantomas creeps round the abode. Stepping out of the house, Fejos pays ingenious tribute to the serial origins of the character, as Fantomas uses a recording a of what sounds like a Silent movie score to drown out the screams from his attempt at murder, and choppy, fast edits with sped-up film giving the fight scenes a delightfully pulp edge. Keeping Fantomas until the very end, Fejos and Mauclair’s spin on Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain’s creation with talks in the Old Dark House making the mysterious Fantomas sound mythical, leading to a frantic chase after Inspector Juve learns of a murder victim in the house, and tries to catch the Fantomas.
