Yay for bonus bonus challenge points. I quite enjoyed this film - the tension build throughout worked for me, and I found myself getting pretty nervous by the end. An interesting exploration in the things you have to do to survive in war and the compromises you have to make. I did have to leave the room for one particular scene, but enjoyed the film overall.
Nice to see your glowing review for the film. B) Can I count on your support to add the film to your 500<400 ballot before the next update?

It sounds intriguing enough as this documentary aspires to provide an insight into a "closed city" of Cold War Russia where scientists were employed to work on nuclear projects with detrimental health effects. Still closed today though, the filmmakers struggle to make a movie out of the interviews of a mere handful of former residents and very limited footage of the city. Lacking in these areas, the film instead goes off on tangents about Chernobyl and Russian chemical poisoning of former citizens overseas - tangents ultimately more interesting than the actual topic.

3eyes, perhaps someone has asked you before in the history of this forum, and of course I don't mean to pry into your memories, but would you be willing to grace us with some recollections of the home front experience during WWII, or the experiences of moviegoing in the 1940s?
Aww... Thank you, Blocho. I flaunt my age too much, but time is moving on... I'm not sure whether this thread is the place, but as good as any I guess.

Well, of course in the US we had it easy compared to most places. (My husband was in occupied Norway.) there was rationing - sugar, eggs, butter, meat, gas, shoes, chocolate, etc. But. For intance, my mother worked out that the sugar ration came to 1/2 cup per person per week, and gave us individual sugar bowls with the promise that anything left over would be saved for making cookies when we had enough. But my father was under a lot of stress and put a lot of sugar in his coffee, so he'd empty his sugar bowl and raid ours, and we never made those cookies. We collected scrap metal and newspapers, turned vacant lots into community victory gardens, took our 10 cents to school every week to buy stamps for our war-bond books. Stickers on cars said "Is this trip absolutely necessary? Speed limit was 35 mph. We had dark green shades on the windows and practice blackouts announced by the siren at the coating mills.

My cousin, who was a year older and good at eavesdropping on adult conversations (which I tuned out), kept me apprised of developments: We had to have blackouts because one little incinerary bomb could destroy a whole city. (later on I thought we had dropped an incinerary bomb on Hiroshima.) My cousin and I looked forward to the comics in the Sunday Chicago Tribune and every Sunday we were on the phone lamenting which favorite strip had been discontinued because the author had been drafted.

I knew nothing about the specifics of why Hitler and Tojo were the bad guys, but I remember one ugly incident involving a boy in the neighborhood who I later learned was Jewish. (There were very few Jewish families in our town.)

Movies: newsreel, cartoon, short + feature of sometimes double feature and no short. lots of propaganda, which was of course the norm for me. (Netflix has a collection of WW II cartoons which I recently watched some of). Children's fare: Disney, musicals, home-front soap operas, Margaret O'Brien, Roddy McDowell, Mickey Rooney, Tarzan, Abbott & Costello, 30s retreads.

It'll be on my list - I've decided not to maintain a 500<400 ballot, choosing to just filter out everything ineligible from my Favorites list. But since it's now on my favorites list, it'll be there.

Also,

eating rat meat didn't bother me at all. Killing the dog did - I was having a sad day missing my late dog, and I just had to leave the room. I came back in when they were eating the dog, which, surprisingly, didn't really bother me.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Thank you for sharing. The appeal of history for me has always been the struggle and the thrill of connecting the present and the past. No historical source can provide that connection quite like someone who actually lived that past.

9. Hitler's Britain (Bond, 2002) 5/10
10a. Nicht löschbares Feuer / The Inextinguishable Fire (Farocki, 1969) [25 min.] 4/10
10b. Kokoda Front Line! (1942) [9 min.] 3/10
10c. La caduta di Troia / The Fall of Troy (Pastrone-Borgnetto, 1911) [31 min.] 4/10
11. Un été inoubliable / An Unforgettable Summer (Pintilie, 1994)

Conflict portrayedThe Little Entente
BelligerentsRomania, Czechoslovakia & Yugoslavia vs. Macedonian Komitadji (bandits), Hungarian irredentists

Other factionsEthnic Bulgarians caught in the crossfire, France
Time period1921 – 1938 (film takes place over Summer 1925)
LocationSouthern Dobruja

Scott-Thomas is great as the moral centrepiece of this story about the conflict between between conscience and obeying orders. The story feels like it needed more complexity, so despite some good scenes I didn't feel there was enough interest to give this more than a mild recommendation.

12. The Great Martian War 1913–1917 (Slee, 2013)

Conflict portrayedThe Great Martian War
BelligerentsAn extrasolar location (invaders first spotted in the vicinity of Mars) vs. Earth
CommandersUnknown vs. Earth's world leaders
Other factionsVictisite (a living form of metal)
Time period1913 – 1917
LocationWestern Europe & The Atlantic Ocean

A retelling of War of the Worlds as a historical documentary. The authenticity is impressive; despite some flaws where it's too obvious that the talking heads are acting, and the unavoidable CGI quality of the Martians, it definitely captures the feel of a typical History Channel documentary. The story elements are less successful; despite an original final twist to the story, it never feels believable that this war would parallel World War I so exactly.

Matthew Broderick initially felt miscast to me here, but I grew to like him over the course of the film. The movie does, however, uneasily pull in two directions. On hand, it is about Broderick learning to be a colonel with memorable moments like obtaining shoes and staring at a whipped Denzel Washington; on the other hand, it is also about the African American soldiers with some of the best moments coming from them conversing among themselves. The an overbearing, sentimental music score was a nuisance too, but this is a generally interesting look at wartime brutality.

12. Ningen no jôken I [The Human Condition I: No Greater Love](1959) (rewatch): 9.5 > 10!
13. Ningen no jôken II [The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer] (1959) (rewatch): 9.5 > 10!
14. Ningen no jôken III [The Human Condition II: Road to Eternity] (1961) (rewatch): 9.5 > 10! - A masterpiece. One little side-note: the box-art on the Arrow blu ray box must be one of the most hideous ever for such a masterpiece.
15. Ballada o soldate (1959) (rewatch): 9 > 10! - another masterpiece; a sweet little movie that's perfectly executed.
16. Judgment at Nuremberg (1961): 8.5
17. Culloden (1964): 6.5 - Making an imitation of a documentary of a battle fought in 1746 sure is original and interesting. Unfortunately it didn’t all work for me. Mostly because the acting is of such low level, I constantly was taking out of this idea of watching real people. Secondly the handful of numbers of people shown on screen don’t correspond to scale of the event we're being told about in the voice-over. So this could have been way better if Watkins had a bigger budget to hire better and more actors
17. The War Game (1965): 7.8 - Maybe amateur actors have less trouble in impersonating people from their own time, cause the non-professional acting didn't bother me in this one. This idea of a documentary showing of events that could happen in a nuclear attack works remarkable well. What's was most eyeopening still to me now were not the (in)direct physical effects of a nuclear attack, but the larger ones to an immediate post nuclear-war society; the social unrest that would occur. The movie does feel dated in its thinking this doom scenario is inevitable in hindsight.
18. La grande vadrouille [Don't Look Now... We're Being Shot At!] (1966): 7.0
19. Le roi de coeur [King of Hearts] (1966): 6.2 - A French soldier has to defuse a bomb in a French town, but finds the only inhabitants left are patients of an insane asylum. Although unoriginal the premise of madmen being saner than the rest of the world during such a horrific war as WWI is a promising one, the movie unfortunately fails to do anything really new or interesting with it. It's a bit too whimsical and its plot meanders. This probably holds the most value for fans of these kind of Belle epoque costumes.
20. The Wild Geese (1978): 5.8 - More action-adventure than a pure war movie (so I'm not completely sure it qualifies for this challenge). The action in this is pretty enjoyable, but everything else, including the acting by Richard Burton and Roger Moore, is mediocre at best.
SpoilerShow
1. Jarhead (2005) (rewatch): 9.0 > 8.2
2. Napoléon vu par Abel Gance (1927): 9.5
3. Les croix de bois [Wooden Crosses] (1932): 8.2
4. Went the Day Well? (1942): 7.8
5. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946): 8.0
6. Roma, città aperta (1945) (rewatch): 7.2 > 8.0 -
7. Paisà (1946): 8.0 -
8. Germania anno zero (Germany Year Zero) (1948): 7.8
9. Fear and Desire (1953): 4.8
10. Ice Cold in Alex (1958): 8.0
11. The Diary of Anne Frank (1959): 7.8
The boldness of titles has no meaning, it's just to make these post easier scanable for its titles.

Well, that was bleak. Set in the Philippines, this Japanese film follows several soldiers trying to survive after they've been abandoned by military leadership, and you see the lengths they go to to stave off death and starvation. Very moody and almost shocking at where it goes. The end scene... :circle:

43. The Vietnam War: The Weight of Memory (2017)
And this marks the end of the Ken Burns/Lynn Novick miniseries. Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. Such rich depth of information, but they go out of their way to interview people on multiple sides of the issues. US soldiers and Viet Cong soldiers. And protesters. And soldiers-turned-protesters. And military people who didn't agree with the protesters. And draftees. And draft dodgers. Etc. I feel like I learned a lot from the series, but also appreciated the personal emotional stories people told. VERY good series and highly recommended.

Fires on the Plain didn't wreck me nearly as much as Come and See, but I'm also growing slightly numb to war depression after a month of war films. Still though, the lack of any battle porn in Fires on the Plain served it well - there was nothing glorious about war. And that end scene will haunt me for every war movie I see from now until I die, methinks.

ICM
August Challenge: ImageImage

Double Trouble:

35. Overlord (1975)

Image

Archive and newsreel footage from the 1940s is seamlessly blended with newly shot material in this fiction film experiment. The lack of a straightforward narrative makes the whole thing very dreamy, like distant memories being gradually pieced together, and much of the newly filmed material, shot by John Alcott, is gorgeous. The eyeball reflection that has been used on almost every DVD cover (see above) comes as part of an exquisite sequence, while the extreme high camera angles, slow zooms in and out and spine-tingling music are great.

36. Overlord (2018)

Image

This modern thriller looks at a different side of Operation Overlord, speculating what may have transpired when American troops parachuted into Nazi occupied France. The first 40 minutes are deliberately misleading with everything built as a standard 'war is hell' movie. Things take a sharp turn shortly before halfway though with a distinct horror flavour in the second half as the film looks at what Dr. Mengele might have really been interested in achieving with all of his medical experiments. Intriguing stuff, though the cliché child in danger was a nuisance.

Week 4 Fun Stats

Sorry, nothing to report. I'm too tired and too pressed for time at the moment, and with everybody still treating this like a horror challenge, I am way behind in updating the list of titles that everyone has seen.

If there is the interest for it, I'll try to get some stats together on Saturday or Sunday, but I can't promise anything.

At least from me, there is the interest, but life happens - if you don't have the time, no worries.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

22. Mudbound (WWII)

23. Soldiers in Hiding (Vietnam)

This is the doc which influenced Debra Granik's Leave No Trace. It's quite powerful, and I recommend it to anyone interested. I think I'm gonna add it to my 500<400 list. The movie was made in the mid 1980s, and a lot of the people depicted were my age now, which made me think a lot of the three friends I had who enlisted during our Iraq/Afghanistan idiocy 15 years ago. I'm thankful they all came back unwounded and mostly OK emotionally.

Incidentally, the narrator for this doc is Bob Gunton, who everyone remembers as the warden in Shawshank. I was surprised to find out I've seen him in 14 other movies, though I don't remember him in a single one. It turns out he was a radioman in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. There's a very interesting story about him here: https://www.courierpostonline.com/story ... 480284002/

@sol - Ballada o soldate which I watched yesterday is a DTC nominee.
Fixed, sorry. If I include a Bonus Challenge next time I host, it needs to be something that I can more easily keep track of.
