Cinema. This is the first time I've ever managed to see all of the FF nominees in the cinema and as it turns out, the first year from which I've seen all of them, period. I carp a lot about how I don't have a lot of choices besides the blockbusters where I live, but truth is when it comes to award nominees I can usually manage if I make a little effort, and this year I did, and it was worth it even if only two of them were particularly close to excellent or great. One reason I typically haven't seen many of these nominees is that, as you'd expect, Oscar often picks foreign nominees that seem closest to the kinds of films Hollywood makes, and I see enough of those - and many of the greatest filmmakers, like Tarkovsky, Rivette - most of the French New Wave filmmakers, Ruiz, etc, never came close to this "honor". And this new film from Donnersmarck - only his third, and second German film after his 2006 debut Das Leben der Anderen - certainly seems to fit the Hollywood FF paradigm at first, being a long and narratively straightforward, beautifully shot (by Caleb Deschanel) film taking in the darkest part of German history and having themes of love against the odds, personal worth, capitalism's triumph over socialism (though this is not without nuance or self-criticism), etc. In brief, it's the story of a man - a young boy in 1937 when we begin - who sees his sister and home taken away, who lives through the war and falls in love, struggles to find his way as a painter, all the while having a connection to the events that befell his sister but not knowing. It starts out fairly straightforwardly as a film about loss, survival, redemption etc in he wartime era, but as it moves into it's second half, the initial storyline - which would seem to involve the search for answers after terrible personal traumas during the war which impact young Kurt (Tom Schilling), our protagonist, the film does go off in a rather different direction for a while, and when it comes back to a resolution of sorts and a kind of tying together of a couple of strands of plot, it certainly isn't in the typical Hollywood manner - which could well have made something like a revenge film out of this material. I'm being obscure here because the plot certainly is the thing and I think this is one where it will be of more value to go into it fairly cold, but there are a lot of things to think about - the relationships between the treatment of people by the Nazis, the Russians and East Germans, and the West; the value of art in a social context and the role of the individual in determining it; guilt and self-recognition, etc. While I quite admired the first half or so, I'm a little ambivalent about later portions, though it always remains interesting. I rated the director's first film a point higher, and might still - I'd have to go back to it after a dozen years - in part because of the strength of Ulrich Mühe's central performance - Schilling here plays a quite passive character and while I can't fault his acting it's hard, at least after one viewing, to really connect with him or his world, and I think we're meant to. In any case a very thought-provoking and fascinating work and one that will hopefully get seen by more people now, though it didn't win the big prize.

I'm done, thanks albajos!

Probably because my brain went wonky and I put the wrong year. Should be 1976. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072939/

Scores are updated in the OP. (And the 3 imdb-lists)

I am a bit feverish at the moment but did this extremely slowly so it should be correct, but let me know if there is any wrong scores.

As usual I'll keep the thread open for posting until midnight 3rd/4th, but I'll probably post the stats in 18 hours or so.

Final Update
24 hours (and then some) since last point-giving post. You still have about 24 hours to post stuff from february and I'll edit them in.

At the end we collected 1204 points. Divided by 747 features (554 fiction, 74 documentary) and 174 shorts (nominated as shorts).
With 41 paticipants this is an average of 29,36 each. The average particpant would place 12th.

1 (1)1flavo5000145145

3 (2)1albajos111111
4 (4)2Nathan Treadway9393
5 (5)2redcard298282
6 to 41Show

flavo5000 was in the lead in all updates, but had a bit competition from albajos in the beginning. After 12,5% of the total amount of points three updates in a row, the steady addition of new participants dropped flavo5000 down to 12,0% in the end.
Top 4 in this challenge has now become the top 4 in the all time leaderboard and 28 of the participants joined the top 100.
7/20 participants beat their previous best score. The remaining 21/41 participants are new to the challenge.
Noone beat their previous best positon, but two, flavo5000 and maxwelldeux, tied with it.
