33. 'Streamline Express' / 1935, Leonard Fields / 7/10 / USA
34. 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' / 1939, Alfred L. Werker / 8/10 / USA
35. 'Of Mice and Men' / 1939, Lewis Milestone / 9/10 / USA
36. 'Ohnivé léto' / 'Fiery Summer' / 1939, Frantisek Cáp, Václav Krska / 9/10 / Czechoslovakia

The tragic Zorka Janu as the wide-eyed, infatuated girl at the outside of youthful holiday interactions and desires in Krska and Cáp's lyrical, explorative and dazzling summer interlude beside the Otava River; theirs is a film of remarkable sensuousness and longing bottled up just beneath the surface and bubbling up despite constraints and expectations:

Love that description. I guess you don't offer look under my spoiler tags (not that there is ever much reason to, I suppose) but it looks even more impressive with some of the Challenges where have seen 80 plus films, such as last year's 1970s Challenge and Canadian Challenge. I'm not quite all that OCD though. It's just a way of organising what to watch.

Always very clearly a vehicle to showcase West's talents more than anything else, she does admittedly have some great moments here as she banters with everyone around her and offers sharp and witty responses at every turn. She dons some very glitzy gowns too. Outside of West though, there is little worth noting here and the entire first ten minutes are dull before West finally appears. Even when West arrives though, it is hard to fully embrace a film that is always more about her than any semblance of a story, great on-screen persona or not.

You've got an interesting pattern going on with your views theres, sol. Kind of looks like you're mapping the east coast of Florida ending around Palm Beach...
I do, on occasion, look under everyone's spoiler tags (that has a filthy ring to it... tehe ), but yours just struck me that way for some reason right then. Must be my mid-winter mood hankering for a warmer climate. The 70s one is interesting too. there was a guy on IMDB who'd always organize his horror challenge views descending by length of title. It looked quite neat.

37. 'La marmaille' / 1935, Dominique Bernard-Deschamps / 5.5/10 / France
38. 'A Damsel in Distress' / 1937, George Stevens / 9/10 / USA
39. The Last Curtain' / 1937, David MacDonald / 6.5/10 / UK
40. 'They Made Me a Criminal' / 1939, Busby Berkeley / 8/10 / USA

One of John Garfield's signature roles, as the boxer on the run accused of murder; the grimy, drink-fuelled post-fight scene-setting of the film's opening is particularly effective:

10. Naughty Marietta (Robert Z. Leonard/W.S. Van Dyke, 1935)
11. Monte Carlo (Ernst Lubitsch, 1930)

Typical, but typically delightful, Lubitsch creampuff with a Countess (Jeanette MacDonald) fleeing a marriage to a boring weird older guy (Claud Allister) and ending up in Monte Carlo, where she promptly falls into a love-hate relationship with a Count - or a hairdresser - or both (Jack Buchanan). Zasu Pitts doesn't quite steal the show as her sardonic maid, but that's only because the whole principal cast is pretty great. I can't really say that any of the songs - including what would become MacDonald's signature tune, "Beyond the Blue Horizon" are super-memorable but none of them are bad either, and it all flows along nicely, with plenty of pre-Code naughtiness.

12. Five Star Final (Mervyn LeRoy, 1931)

Thanks to cinephage who nominated it in DTC and put it higher on my radar, though I'm not sure I'll be giving it enough help to get it on the final list. Not that it's bad overall or anything, but the very strong subject matter - tabloid journalism and the effects one purveyor of such (Edward G. Robinson, as good as usual or maybe even a little better) has on a family, the generally fine acting in the newspaper office portion of the film, by Robinson, Aline MacMahon, and Boris Karloff playing a rare "ordinary' character and having an excellent drunk scene - is undermined seriously by the really terrible and stagy acting during most of the domestic scenes, especially from Frances Starr as a onetime murderess trying to go straight until Robinson and his tabloid get wind of where she lives, and the marriage she plans for her daughter. It's almost a night-and-day story here, great newsroom scenes followed by awful scenes in Starr's home, repeat. I still liked it quite a bit overall, and the last scene, over-the-top though it may be, packs a punch, but I really can't ignore the problems.

13. Tao hua qi xue ji / Peach Blossom Weeps Tears of Blood (Wangcang Bu, 1931)

Fairly ordinary melodrama about a poor tenant farming couple who have a daughter that plays harmlessly with the son of the mistress of the estate - until, of course, they grow up and their class differences divide them. Lingyu Ruan plays the girl as an adult and while she shows more star power and a slightly more naturalistic style (when not hysterical as she is a couple of times) than most of the rest of the cast, she's not yet operating on the level she would in Shen nu either, and the story and it's denouement are quite predictable and though just about 100 minutes it feels overlong.

14. Gang Smashers (Leo C. Popkin, 1938)

I'll have to do some research into Popkin sometime; a Canadian-born director known mostly for the 1951 racially-tinged noir The Well, he's also credited with a half dozen Poverty Row b-crime flicks from 1938-40, all of them done with all-black casts. I saw the 1940 Gang War aka Crime Street a couple of years ago, and this is much the same thing - very cheap, short (an hour) gangster film ostensibly set in New York - but wait until you see the mountains and winding roads of Los Angeles when a car chase is needed - about federal agents infiltrating the big boss and his outfit, one of them pretending to be a hitman coming from out of town. Oh, it's also a pseudo-musical with 3 or 4 OK jazz-blues numbers. What lifts this above Gang War is the presence of Mantan Moreland, always a dynamic personality and here used a little more interestingly than in most films as more than just comic relief, though that's here also. Still not really worthwhile unless you're a fan of Moreland or race films generally

15. The Private Life of Henry VIII (Alexander Korda, 1933)

Also problematic from a moral - and in this case historical - viewpoint is this bio-pic of a vicious, bloodthirsty, cruel tyrant who murdered two of his wives because they wouldn't or couldn't be what he wanted that makes him out to be something like a cute teddy bear. Henry's first wife Catherine of Aragon is only mentioned in the opening titles, despite the fact that it was his desire to divorce her that led to the schism with the Pope, the formation of the Church of England, etc. I guess it wasn't entertaining enough, just as Thomas More - never mentioned at all in the whole film - isn't entertaining enough to show his head getting lopped off though we're privy to the two wives' beheadings. In other words, a thoroughly whitewashed film to suit any monarchist of any period. To be fair to it as an entertainment, it's not bad, and this is certainly a role that Charles Laughton was born to, at least as imagined in the screenplay by Wimperis and Biró; his wife Elsa Lanchester plays wife #4 Anne of Cleves and their scenes together are plenty of fun as well. Mmmm. Yeah.

16. Captain Blood (Michael Curtiz, 1935) (re-watch)

This was on TCM just after I got up, a nice was to start the day. Probably my third viewing though likely the first since last century, and it remains lots of fun, though if I had to guess I'd say that many of those involved in the production probably saw some of the same problems I did, with the end result being that when Curtiz, stars Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Basil Rathbone all got together three years later for The Adventures of Robin Hood - which has a remarkably similar basic story and structure - they beefed up the action a bit, enhanced the villains' parts, particularly Rathbone's, and cut a bit of fat out - this runs 17 minutes longer than Robin Hood and it feels it's length. Anyway it's a solid swashbuckler even if neither Rathbone nor "lead" bad guy Lionel Atwill are onscreen as much as they should be, and there are a few too many Merry Men, excuse me pirates in Captain Blood's retinue, and perhaps a little more slapstick than necessary. Really good battle sequence near the end; the Flynn/Rathbone sword fight is fine but would be improved on later for sure.

39. Kristian (1939, Martin Fric)
40. Eva tropí hlouposti / Eva Fools Around (1939, Martin Fric)
A second double feature, this time by the most promonent Czechoslovakian comedy director of the classic era, Martin Fric - and these are two very, very different films (despite being made the exact same year and even having the same male & female lead) - something that was made clear from the very first frame. It is worth noting that Fric actually made 5 features in '39. What is interesting however is that both show, very, very well, what kind of film they are to be (stylistically) straight from the beginning.

Kristian opens with tremendous stylistic security as it slowly builds atmosphere from a darkly lit card game, into a luxurious night club, and the introduction of our lead(s), each with a sense turning tables, elegance and wit. The visual ideas that follow are not as inventive, but you're hooked to the falling house of cards as masks fall off, the tone becomes lighter and an unusual cat and mouse game starts of play. In the end a simpler and more charming film than first expected, but you can easily see why it became a classic. 8-8.5/10.

Eva Fools Around is very different, and far closer to straight up slapstick - the issue here is that it goes for a level of extreme silliness - again revealed from the beginning as the joke is the sound of a crash, with a shrug that Eva has returned (of course she has crashed her car and has been thrown into a tree). While amusing enough it is in a strange land of very silly punchlines and often very dry/dull build ups, as the actual "drama" at hand is handled in a rather ordinary and dull way. Less inventive both in terms of plotting, visuals and characters. 6/10

41. Der alte und der junge König - Friedrichs des Grossen Jugend / The Making of a King (1935, Hans Steinhoff)
Passably done by most involved, but with a level of self-serious grandeur (with direct implications about the one great leader) to make it a very trite affair. 5/10.

42. Reka / River / Young Love (1933, Josef Rovenský)
The river of images in poetic free form makes the small but simple tale of Reka into an extraordinary film. You rarely see a film editing to bask in the glory of the world quite like this - and the story is secondary to the emotions in every way (while being emotional and strong on its own). A great, beautiful, rewarding and unusual work from a director who had never been on my rader (and sadly do not appear to have any other films with English subtitles). 8.5/10.

Another forum I use had a "best of the 1930s" project that just finished, so that nicely matches up with this challenge. Will everyone hate me if I duck in at the end here? I haven't done this before, but I understand the rules well enough - so here's the 30s films I've watched so far this Feb.

01. Two-Gun Man from Harlem (1938)
All black cast (although the star - Herb Jeffries - would later say he was white, so he could legally marry Tempest Storm! He led an interesting life). Anyway - a silly little western, with the fun song "I'm a happy cowboy" + a killer preacher who seems right out of a 70s blaxploitation film!

02. Cavalcade (1933) - Rewatch
idk why I rewatched this, its still just as offensively bad. Proof that forgettable & terrible Oscar-bait movies have always been a thing.

03. Shorts Collection
Light Spill: Black-White-Gray (1930) - I saw the actual machine at an art museum a few years ago. I prefer the sculpture to the film.
Tomatos Another Day (1930) - Hilarious takedown of talkies + their pointless dialogue; if only there was a needless musical number as well.
What Do You Think? (1937) - This feels like an episode of One Step Beyond, only worse
Komposition in Blau (1935) - I prefer Begone Dull Care
Thru the Mirror (1936) - Mickey cartoon which underutilizes the concept: small Mickey in a world where everything is alive
Swing You Sinners! (1930) - OK, that ending makes this unforgettable / one of the craziest things I've seen. All should see this.
Jeune fille au jardin (1936) - Beautiful + simple impressionist film with rear + front projection.
Hollywood Handicap (1938) - Short comedy at a racetrack with the instrument-less band; and a parade of cameos. Directed by Buster Keaton ...... what?

04. Strike Me Pink (1936)
Why does nobody talk about this? It was written for Harold Lloyd; but Eddie Cantor stars. It feels like a mix of Lloyd/Keaton + Looney Tunes. This was hilarious. 10/10

05. At the Circus (1939)
Its taken me awhile to appreciate the Marx Bros, but now I can't get enough of them. Did Harpo ever release an album of his harp music? Highlight is Eve Arden as the ceiling walking baddie.

06. The Thin Man (1934) - Rewatch
This wasn't as great on rewatch; as I feel like they kinda forgot about Myrna Loy halfway through; though the comedy /chemistry is still great.

07. Shorts Collection Two
L'idée (1932) - Film version of a woodcut print book about revolutionary ideas, and how they're destroyed by oppressors.
Lot in Sodom (1933) - This is like a homoerotic Guy Maddin version of the Bible.
Glens Falls Sequence (1937) - Mix of what seems like every variety of animation pieced together.

08. Hej-Rup!
Fantastic Czech comedy - its like Laurel and Hardy turn communist. This is a new favorite.

Also (not quite another hour of shorts yet)
Monsieur Fantômas (1937) - Surrealist comedy parody of Fantomas; highlight being the nod to Potemkin
The Birth of the Robot (1936) -
SpoilerShow
This is a fucking commercial for Shell Oil ......

Hey, another Fric! Not seen this one, but as it comes recommended I will seek it out before the end of the challenge. Honestly, the more I see from Czechoslovakia the more I realize that it is an absolutely fantastic cinema country - and possibly one to match/take on the Soviet union (well, if only they had their own Eisenstein or Tarkovsky).

I think reality dancing shows kinda ruined this movie for me - I'm familiar with the Fred/Ginger style, and it's not one of my favorites. They're great at what they do, but it's just not what interests me. But funny story - shortly after finishing the movie, I'm walking around singing wildly inappropriate made-up songs to myself (as I'm wont to do) and my wife yells out from the bedroom "Fucking Irving Berlin!" which immediately made me start giggling.

Marian Marsh in 'Beauty and the Boss' (thank you, insomnius), and Busby Berkeley's 'Dames',
Glad you liked it. Charming film. I have a couple of your noms at hand that I hope to catch soon.

Sorry for not getting back to you on 'Remous' and 'Cape Forlorn'. I haven't watched them yet and wasn't really up for this challenge after indulging in 1932 for 2 months just prior to it. I'll save them for later.

Fredric March and Elissa Landi are both fairly bland the romantic leads here and it always feels like more of a case of him being attracted to her than any sort of reciprocated love affair. Where the film unequivocally succeeds though is in its depiction of the debauchery and excesses of the Roman men and women. Made pre-Production Code, DeMille includes some amazing scenes of Claudette Colbert bathing in milk with a nip slip or two, a naked woman tied up while animals prance around her, and the list goes on.

27. The Sin of Nora Moran (1933)

Image

The first half of this film is visually breathtaking with lots of dissolve-heavy montages, several tracking shots, some zooms in/out and revealing pre-Code costumes as we are shown the title character's life before meeting her love. Alas, this visual experimentation pretty much ceases once the love plot begins and between the melodramatic performances and mundane characters, it is ultimately a little hard to get swept away in the story despite some unexpected twists and turns. The melancholic final stretch of the film is pretty neat though.
