hey i watched one (or rewatched)

Image

1. the awful truth (mccarey 1937) i remember not liking this years ago but i've no idea why now, dunne and grant have great chemistry and superb comic timing. dunne and bellamy's dance scene killed me  i think i used to find dunne too frenetic but she's really grown on me over the years

Leslie Howard is every bit an equal to Bette Davis in his melodrama. It is easy to feel for his tortured soul as he moans that in a relationship there is "one who loves and one who is loved". The editing is great too, from dissolved-over dreams (see above) to changing backdrops as Howard wanders the streets. While Howard's feeling of inadequacy resonate, the film barely explores why he is so infatuated with Davis and it becomes frustrating to watch him carry a torch for her even as she mistreats him. Their initial courting through witty insults was great though.

1. the awful truth (mccarey 1937)
2. nancy drew...reporter (clemens 1939) -- good fun with bonita granville as the whipsmart girl detective, her beatnik boyfriend, his smartass little sister... and dickie jones as a character called killer. i've not seen one of these movies before but i have read some of the books and this was better than i expected. aside from the grating musical number but i'm pretty sure that was intentional. this is on youtube

Nothing of the main plot of this musical is especially interesting, though the dissolve-over shots of the two leads conversing with their inner selves when they crash-land are fun. Same goes for the bankers only ever being shown in silhouette. The film is, however, greatly elevated by the casting of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in their first on-screen collaboration. Dancing together by touching heads and so on to the Oscar nominated tune 'Carioca', the pair steal the show and provide much more chemistry than in the main love triangle romance.

03. One Way Passage, by Tay Garnett (1932) 8/10

I love how this film is so efficient, no loose end, no soft belly in the middle, straight to the point, yet taking the time to be sweet, funny, and sad at the same time. This is great storytelling, really.

35. Daigaku no wakadanna / The Boss's Son at College (1933, Hiroshi Shimizu)
36. Kinkanshoku / Eclipse (1934, Hiroshi Shimizu)

Two more Shimizu silents, that luckily shows a lot more promise of what was to come, but ended up being not too interesting in the long-run. Eclipse especially opened in a very intriguing and expressionistic way, fill with light and varied imagery, before becoming an overly complicated "love" story, and The Boss's Son at College, which also had some great and in this case cute moments, just became thinner and thinner (and unwittingly disturbing with the obsessed friend punishing his sister). All-in-all both films were reasonably good, but still disappointing as I had really hoped Shimizu's early career would have had some real gems. 6/10

Charles Laughton is excellent here, remaining so polite and well-spoken even when disturbed by the way his new employer wants to treat him, and his gradual progression from discomfort to embracing the American way of life is incredibly affecting. The film does, however, get a bit lost in its flag-waving agenda; Laughton's recital of the Gettysburg Address is very powerful, but such jingoistic moments come at the expense of the comedic potential of him being mistaken for a colonel. This is still pretty funny stuff though and Charles Ruggles is great too.

The opening scene in Tibet here is incredibly well done with the creature's shadow only visible at first and the transformation effects are superb throughout, with clever tricks like the protagonist slowly changing more and more as he runs behind various pillars in his home. His laboratory full of unusual plants is perfectly eerie too. The non-werewolf and non-transformation scenes are, however, a lot less engaging here with far more talk than action, but the film at least wraps up in an almost poetic manner and the makeup is great.

A Hollywood melodrama, set in the Middle East but shot in Arizona. The early Technicolor cinematography is certainly quite gorgeous, especially in the dusk time and long distance shots that show off the magnificent Arizona deserts. Max Steiner's Oscar nominated score also comes with ample emotional swells. As a narrative though, the project is a lot less impressive. With Boyer only revealing his reasons for fleeing his monastery near the end, his internal strife barely registers and Marlene Dietrich does not exactly have amazing chemistry with him.

A surprising Erich Engel double feature. I had previously only seen his co-directed effort with Otsep, but it coloured me intruiged and I was interested in seeing if they were similar filmmakers (Engel was also a collaborator of Brecht, which made me additionally intruiged).

37. Wer nimmt die Liebe ernst... / Who takes love seriously? (1931, Erich Engel) 8.5/10
Who Takes Love Seriously? is wonderfully simple, fun and clever tale of love, taking us into the world of poor small-time crooks with hearts of gold, their mostly harmless schemes. I was impressed by how casually it handled very real consequences, and the breezy way it incorporated empathy, solidarity and both social and class commentary. This belongs incredibly well with the late 20s and early 30s films of Chaplin, Clair and Fejos, with a great amount of charm and a lack of need to look down on the people in the gutter.

38. Inge und die Millionen (1933, Erich Engel) 7.5-8/10
Split over multiple short acts Inge und die Millionen was (surprisingly given the title) not a another charming comedy, but a far more sterile film about currency smuggling (it did however open with lot of cleverness, and there is still humour throughout). The smuggling is at times a little heavy handed, as it seems to push a very nationalistic keep the money in the country view that had to be hammered in - and all the same Engel managed to elevate it into a tightly packed tale - and casting both Brigitte Helm and Paul Wegener certainly didn't harm it.

-

I will likely not see more Engel this time around as I don't have anything else at the moment, but he is now properly on my radar.

Bogie as a villain! This was pretty fun - a Frankenstein-esque murder mystery. The film opens with a reporter going to interview someone, only to find her dead with a deep would in her chest. When he calls the police and they investigate, they find no dead body. Furthermore, she shows up at the newsroom the next day... Fun plot and remarkably in-depth despite its short run time.

25. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
I guess I was just not in a "watch something wholesome" mood when I watched this. It was nice enough, but the evil capitalist pig storyline got a little tiresome after a while. Enjoyable enough and with some good humor, but fell a little flat for me.
