30. Nakinureta haru no onna yo / A Woman Crying in Spring (1933, Hiroshi Shimizu)
A solid and dark drama from Shimizu. 6.5/10.

31. Nanatsu no umi: Zenpen - Shojo-hen / Seven Seas: Part One - Virginity Chapter (1931, Hiroshi Shimizu)
32. Nanatsu no umi: Kôhen - Teisô-hen / Seven Seas: Part Two - Chastity Chapter (1932, Hiroshi Shimizu)
Two rather weak and really disappointing Shimizu silents. The first part has some utterly pathetic exposition and overall feels incredibly thin, with some redeeming qualities, while part two actually had a more interesting twist. 4/10 & 5.5/10.

33. Lisboa (1930, José Leitão de Barros)
An absolutely fantastic slice of proto-cinema verité. The camera movements are incredible, up high, down low, following feet as water is splashing around them, dancing in the streets. It anechdotal chronicle of Lisbon (which is as it refers to itself) takes 9 parts to depict life from birth to death, and everything inbetween, in the city of Lisbon. It makes it very clear that it is not a documentary, and even uses stage actors, but it fits in perfectly with the city symphonies of the time (and I would say it outdoes each and every one of them). Not every part is flawless, and sometimes they may drag slightly, but the overall scope, editing and experience is simply incredible. 9/10.

(I saw the 2 hour version, but I know there is a more common 88 minute version out there, not sure if the version I saw had more content or if it was just at a slower frame-rate - though the visual quality was top-notch, while the shorter version, from what I understand, is not in great shape)

34. La contessa di Parma / The Duchess of Parma (1937, Alessandro Blasetti)
Elegant with a touch of innocent sleaze, The Duchess of Parma is no duchess as all, but a model made to put on fashionable fake identities, and hang on the arm of aristocrats in name only for no other reason than to promote a failing clothing brand. In all the scheming she brushes up against a cocky footballer, who of course buys the entire story. Utterly enjoyable, charming and quite a bit of fun. 8/10.

This is one of Karloff's best performances as he convincingly plays two very different characters, conversing with himself even at several points thanks to smart editing and impressive early special effects. The film is also very well photographed with some amazing angular shots as the townsfolk march against him. The ending is a little contrived here (if nicely poetic) but generally speaking, this is an excellent look into the dangers of superstition and the power of one's belief in a curse to totally make someone paranoid and irrational.

18. The Vampire Bat (1933)

Image

The best thing this Dracula inspired movie has going its favour is its recasting of Dwight Frye as another eccentric individual: here, a man whose fascination with bats (waxing poetic about how they soar and so on) leads to mob hysteria with everyone assuming that he is vampire murderer. This assumption leads to some interesting ideas regarding mob hysteria, but none are well developed. The leads are also bland here, the comic relief generally backfires and there is far too much talk and too little terror, mood and atmosphere.

There was nothing particularly intriguing about this, but I still enjoyed it. As genuine friendship blossoms between Claudette Colbert and her African American housekeeper, Imitation of Life feels like a film well ahead of its time from the outset, and as the housekeeper's light-skinned daughter grows ashamed of her heritage, things get even more interesting. The film soon becomes less interesting though as it switches to focus to a predictable love triangle of soap opera proportions involving the Colbert and her daughter. Louise Beavers offers an extremely heartfelt turn as the housekeeper, however, and keeps the film afloat.

d) It's Got Me Again (Rudoph Ising, 1932)

f) The Merry Old Soul (Walter Lantz/William Nolan, 1933)

2. Storm Over Bengal (Sidney Salkow, 1938)
3. Charlie Chan in Paris (Lewis Seiler/Hamilton MacFadden, 1935)
4. Charlie Chan in Shanghai (James Triling, 1935)
5. She (Lansing C. Holden/Irving Pichel, 1935) (re-watch)
6. Red Dust (Victor Fleming, 1932)
7. Charlie Chan's Secret (Gordon Wiles, 1936)
8. She Done Him Wrong (Lowell Sherman, 1933)

Amazing enough this is my first Mae West film, and while I'm sure it won't be last, I can definitely see why she hasn't aged as well as some of her contemporaries. While I liked a lot of her dialogue and her presence, much of this farce - while very racy and ahead of it's times in some ways - just feels dull and stagy to me as a film. Perhaps it worked better on stage in its previous incarnation as "Diamond Lil". You gotta give credit for West for having the power to put her own work out in an era when women were pretty much just actresses and costume designers, even if the screenplay is by two men, and for totally dominating the film - though we don't see her at all in the first few minutes. Cary Grant makes an impression for his charsima and fast-talking here though he doesn't get a lot to do; the ending strikes me as silly and contrived even by screwball standards. This is the 8th of the 10 Best Pic nominees I've seen for the year, and the winner, Cavalcade, remains the worst by a good margin. The Oscars have always sucked.

9. More 1930s cartoons 8+8+7+8+8+9+7+9 = 64 minutes

a) Who Killed Cock Robin? (David Hand, 1935)
b) The Old Mill Pond (Hugh Harman, 1936)
c) Educated Fish (Dave Fleischer, 1937)
d) The Little Match Girl (Arthur Davis/Sid Marcus, 1937)
e) Good Scouts (Jack King, 1938)
f) Hunky and Spunky (Dave Fleischer, 1938)
g) Detouring America (Tex Avery, 1939)
h) The Pointer (Clyde Geronimi, 1939)

Nothing outstanding in this bunch, nothing even particularly good - though nothing close to bad either. An octet of average to fairly decent, basically, though there's a bit more variety than in the last bunch - less Disney, a couple of Fleischers, and early Tex Avery here. The Disneys overall have the best animation and color in this bunch but are the least funny and most cutesy - par for the course. The Harman jazz piece is not a little racist, but that's also par for the course, and the music's great regardless - I suppose one can make an argument that the exposure that African-Americans got in jazz and blues in cartoons makes up for the stereotyping to some extent; it's a hard thing to reconcile now, certainly, but a discussion worth having. The Little Match Girl might be the best piece here overall, though for me the ending - as written originally by Hans Christian Andersen and as seen here and in most film versions - has always been problematic; if you want to make poverty and the unfeeling nature of humanity your theme, saying essentially "happiness will be found in heaven even for the lowest" feels like a particular cop-out, and lets the world off the handle. But I guess most people find it easier to believe than to actually do anything.

10. Naughty Marietta (Robert Z. Leonard/W.S. Van Dyke, 1935)

TCM. I know Jeanette MacDonald better at the moment for her films with Maurice Chevalier than for her more famous and longer collaboration with Nelson Eddy - I think Rose Marie is the only film I'd seen before this with these two. I've never really prioritized MacDonald/Eddy, though I've been ever more drawn to 30s musicals over the last few years and at this point might actually pick the decade as the high point over the 1950s - at least if only considering Hollywood. So it was good that this happened to be on, and even better that I really liked it. Oh the plot is nothing much of course - Princess MacDonald runs away from the royal court in France because she's to be married to an old bore, off to colonial New Orleans where she meets woodsy guide/scout Nelson Eddy, who saves her from pirates. They sing a lot. But besides the pretty good songs we also get a fine supporting cast, notably Frank Morgan and Elsa Lanchester as the Governor and Madame d'Annard, and Akim Tamiroff in a small role as Rudolpho, owner of a little puppet theater that MacDonald hides out in briefly. The music is Victor Herbert - this is adapted from a turn-of-the-century operetta - and for once we have a musical that saves the best song, "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" for last.
