Week 3 Fun Stats

These stats are accurate as of 4:45am GMT on 22/01/19. My apologies if you have posted an update after this point; your viewings will be included in the statistics for next week. :)

For reference: Week 1 Fun Stats // Week 2 Fun Stats

We are up to 27 participants (1 more than this time last week) and we have collectively watched more than 280 films - including over 220 unique titles.

Oscar Predictions

While the average film buff out there is tossing up whether Ethan Hawke, John David Washington or Willem Dafoe will get the fifth Best Actor slot as we speak, here on the iCM Forum, everyone is rather keeping track of who will become the top 5 finishers (Oscar nominees) in maxwelldeux's Challenge Olympics.

The race has certainly changed a bit in the past week, with JeroenO focusing his interests elsewhere, something that he has seen him go to 4th spot, but still safe to receive an Oscar nomination at the moment. In the meantime sol, Traveller, and tourdesb are fighting it out for that coveted maxwell Academy Award. Traveller has been playing it particularly hard of late and might even be a dark horse for the win. While new to the forum this year, he has actually been registered at iCM for almost three years. Welcome to the world of competitive movie watching, Trav! As for 5th place, albajos seems a safe bet for the moment with an ample lead over 6th place max, but we have no idea how many Invisible Man participants are playing this round. Let's see how the remaining nine days of the month play out!

But only imported my IMDB ratings and started using the website last year. :whistling: First place is out of the question at this point (and for probably watching the complete series you deserve it), but the first loser place is still up for grabs. And yes, finally a way to combat my excessive movie watching with people who are even crazier. (D:)

I'll be at a film festival at the end of January/beginning of February thus I'll watch less Rosenbaums the last days. So yes, the first loser place will probably be yours ;)

Depends on the number you settle on to beat - but focusing on only one challenge certainly helps. :D

Rotterdam or a local festival?

Mm, I think that's the one thing that the forum has over the IMDb message boards. I always felt like I watched a lot films, but I'm a mere drop in the water compared to pace at which some forum members (and non-forum users of the iCM) tend to watch movies.

So, Season 4 comes to a close, and as per Season 3, it concludes on more of a whimper than a bang. I would still chalk this up as my favourite season of the entire show (so far) even though Season 1 still has the most powerful conclusion for my money. Always good to see Bubbles back in focus as in these final three episodes. His depression is quite saddening though; same goes for Kima's disinterest in reuniting with him.

Onwards with Season 5; I am now only 10 episodes away from finally getting that much-desired Official Check.

Gerardmer.
A fantastic film festival.
Mostly movies that will never be official :-)
Same with the nearest festival for me. Mostly (german) films that I never hear from again.
After a brief look what's showing, at least Chang-gwol and Manyeo are films that I have on my watchlist but won't catch anytime soon.

Season Five gets off to a solid start with a terrific precredits sequence in which the police use all sorts of tactics to trick confessions - the most amusing of which is using a photocopier for a lie detector test (though I can't possibly imagine anyone being stupid enough to fall for this in real life). We also start to see a new side of things with news journalist characters introduced. Amy Ryan makes a return too while the old team find themselves beset by budget cutbacks.

Chaos ensues when a lowly shepherd is mistaken for a concert musician in this Soviet musical comedy. Highlights include a highbrow party that goes awry when he turns up with an ox tied to his arm and a rehearsal that breaks out into a fight in which music is unintentionally made by players being dragged along their own harps and so on. The film is visually inventive to boot too with a breathtaking tracking shot at a beach that glides along for minutes on end, a glorious gradual pullback final shot, and birds like music bars and notes against power lines.

Just when I was getting content with Season 4 being the strongest of the series, things have started to warm up and become very interesting in Season 5. There is Bubbles and his attendance of a 12 step program, plus there are issues with the local newspaper having to cut jobs, but best of all is McNulty's deliberate tampering with evidence here and whistle blowing stories in a perhaps misguided attempt to get the mayor to redirect more funding to solving the 22 mystery murders of the previous season.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

1. Aerograd (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1935)

Pretty iffy as science fiction I suppose, though this does have it's roots I think in the near-future-war genre popularized in Europe in the late 19th century, when there were dozens if not hundreds of short stories and novels published about potential upcoming conflicts between various nations and groups of nations. Here we have an apparent conflict between the Japanese - represented by Samurai - and Russian forces over a planned Soviet airfield and city on the Pacific coast - but really that's all just subtext or background, we don't really see it, instead we have various little fights and chases involving communists vs locals - I think - and lots of patriotic and religious songs being sung. I didn't get a lot out of this beyond the director's usual excellent visuals and at this point it's probably my least-favorite - or least-understood at least - film from Dovzhenko, who has been one of my favorites for years. I suspect another viewing will make some of what's going on and what it might mean a little clearer though I wouldn't bet that I'll actually like it much more.

2. Entuziazm (Simfoniya Donbassa) / Enthusiasm (Dziga Vertov, 1931)

I'm not sure I'm ready to join JR in calling this a "masterpiece" yet, but in it''s highly inventive use sound and Vertov's always-great editing techniques it's pretty close. As much as these Soviet films from this period are, generally rightfully, labeled "propaganda", there are usually indications in the best of them that this propaganda and pro-Soviet narrative isn't always perfect or coherent. Consider the early sequences of the churches being changed into political halls - we have women in the churches praying, juxtaposed with men outside drinking; perhaps it was clear to Vertov and his audiences that the manly men swilling vodka and then getting rid of religion were the heroes of the state, but it looks rather different now 90 years later. In any case a terrific audiovisual poem of a lost time, perhaps not on the level for me of Vertov's best but like everything I've seen from him memorable and demanding of more viewings.

3. Matinee (Joe Dante, 1993) (re-watch)

A perfect, perfect example of the value of going back to a film years later, when you have become a different person - or at least have new knowledge and experience to bring to the work. I'm sure when I saw this new in January or February of 1993 in the cinema I had no idea who William Castle was - I had seen very few monster movies from the late 50s or early 60s - and I certainly knew next-to-nothing about the culture generally, the cars and the TVs and the furniture and the clothes, of 1962. And while I knew a bit about the Cuban Missile Crisis and our relations with the Soviet Union in the period, I didn't have the context that I have now. This is, on re-watch, an absolutely brilliant recreation of this era, and the particular ways in which monster movies, adolescent sexual desires, fear of the Cold War both national and personal, are juxtaposed is pretty nearly flawless. DP John Hora does a darned good job of capturing the visual look of the era, as films were transitioning from the gaudier late Technicolor into a more pastel-shaded color scheme, Jerry Goldsmith provides a typically fine score, if one that is a little closer to what his peers were doing at the time, and the cast, the cast you just can't fault at all. Probably one of my three favorite John Goodman performances (Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski being the others), great small turns from John Sayles and Dick Miller, and a nice fed-up girlfriend/star turn from Cathy Moriarty. And don't forget Mant!

Just GREAT.

4. Ivan (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1932)

Dovzhenko's first sound film would make a great double feature with Entuziazm, as it reads much like a fictional - or at least part-fictional - telling of a similar story. I'm closer to agreeing with JR's review of this one, though again as with the Vertov I couldn't quite call it a masterpiece on one viewing. It helps that this was a very good copy, better than Aerograd, and that there's a lot of broad humor and that the character of Stepan Iosovich, the "shirker", is such a memorable one. And like Entuziazm and many of these films, it's fascinating that we have here a character who very much does NOT fit in with the socialist ideal - and yet he's treated as a lovable and in many ways positive figure, though again this could be my reading from a vantage many decades in the future. Lots of memorable images here, even more so than in the Vertov; I'm not sure that there are many films that make building and machinery look so beautiful.

Interesting developments continue here as Lester and McNulty's fake case becomes more and more elaborate with the newspaper journalists pressing for more detail, Daniels tied with being unable to fund more man-hours and a hoax actually confessing to being the make-believe serial killer. Meanwhile, Bubbles undergoes HIV testing, the mayor/commissioner tensions simmer and the drug dealers become more violent and out in the open.

Thanks for including tt info next to your short film viewings. :poshclap: You're a saint. :innocent:

By the way, if you liked Barres, I would also highly recommend Luc Moullet's Coke film. Furthermore, if you watch it, you'll be the only person to have seen any of the three films whose images I include in the OP. And don't worry if you can't find the Coke film with English subtitles. The narration is minimal and the film is perfectly understandable even if you don't have any grasp on French.

Barres (1984, 14m) #771 tt0086940
Thanks for including tt info next to your short film viewings. :poshclap: You're a saint. :innocent:

By the way, if you liked Barres, I would also highly recommend Luc Moullet's Coke film. Furthermore, if you watch it, you'll be the only person to have seen any of the three films whose images I include in the OP. And don't worry if you can't find the Coke film with English subtitles. The narration is minimal and the film is perfectly understandable even if you don't have any grasp on French.
I've seen Barres and Essai d'ouverture at least a dozen of times.
I love pretty much everything I've seen by him

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

This film boats some very interesting visuals with plenty of fog/smoke and majestic yet dilapidated sets that ring true to the film's 19th century setting. Then there is the intriguing colour scope as the film alternates between drained colour and black and white footage, albeit not in a meaningful way. The key issue with the film is that it feels twice as long as it needs to be, even with a runtime of under 75 minutes. Only so much of a story can be spun from the very limited premise, and the protagonist is a pretty dull character to follow around.

The Big Sky was good in that even minor characters had a chance to develop some depth and tell their own little story. Kirk Douglas was ostensibly the headliner, but if you look at amount of screen time and speaking lines, he doesn't really seem like the main character--more like a central character, so to speak.
