Best entered into with as few expectations as possible, suffice it to say that the plot here has a group of subway train passengers fearing for their life when their vehicle breaks unexpectedly in a dark tunnel. It is an encapsulating experience from the get-go with one of the most unpredictable jump scares ever committed to film in the first five minutes, plus some really grisly imagery as the protagonist starts to hallucinate - or does she? There is also an unnerving pregnant lady scene in the mix and the music score is both chilling and atmospheric.

it's a beauty way to goShow

1. Warrendale (Allan King, 1967)
2. Anvil: The Story of Anvil (Sacha Gervasi, 2008)

3. SHORTS 7 + 12 + 26 + 16 = 61 m
a) A to Z (Michael Snow, 1956)
b) Dripping Water (Michael Snow/Joyce Wieland, 1968)
c) The Dead Father (Guy Maddin, 1985) (re-watch)
d) Treevenge (Jason Eisener, 2008)

4. Fido (Andrew Currie, 2006)
5. Radiant City (Jim Brown/Gary Burns, 2006)
6. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (Sam Brown/Scott McFadyen, 2010)
7. Plague (Ed Hunt, 1979)
8. Nothing (Vincenzo Natali, 2003)
9. Fubar (Michael Dowse, 2002)

Mock documentary - it gives itself away before it begins, so no spoiler here - about a couple of tiresome, stupid assholes whose lives consist of drinking and smoking and trying to pretend they're in a band I guess. I dunno, I really never connected with this at all, though I have a certain affection for the kinds of low-rent characters we see here - reminiscent in certain respects of Clerks, or Anvil which I watched earlier this month. Terry and Dean, the main characters, are lifelong friends but that friendship is put to the test both through the documentary they're participating in (why? one question that kept recurring in my mind - why would anybody make a doc about these guys?) and through Dean's illness which dominates the latter part of the film. Neither particularly funny nor insightful to me though there were moments of recognition occasionally that made me smile. Ehh.

10. Juste la fin du monde / It's Only the End of the World (Xavier Dolan, 2016)

Not surprised to learn that Dolan's 6th feature is based on a play - it's all conversation and has the feel of discrete scenes and acts to it, and to me at least it felt pretty stagy and artificial much of the time. Despite having the biggest-name cast he's had to date - Nathalie Baye, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Gaspard Ulliel - and a very distinctive and bold stylistic change from his earlier work - most shots are close-ups of faces, and nearly all of them just one face in the frame at a time, as we explore a dysfunctional family reunion of sorts - this has to be counted for me as the director's first failure. I have no problem with unsympathetic or unpleasant characters normally, but I have to say that apart from Cotillard's Catherine - married to Cassel, and meeting Ulliel for the first time - the one outsider to the family unit (Baye's brittle mother, Cassel's angry, older brother, Ulliel's younger, successful playwright brother and our protagonist who is home after a dozen years with bad news, and Seydoux' daughter who is clearly still finding herself and wanting some way out of the family drama), I just couldn't connect to or care about anybody here. Maybe that was the point, but it was a tough slog even at under 100 minutes and I never felt like I was getting any new insights or anything special in this story of frustrated non-connection. I can't really fault the acting but the three women in particular are all actresses I really love and I'd rather see any of them in anything else.

Reading through the last few pages of this thread I see so much good stuff! Sorry I'm rarely up to watching anything very challenging - The political scene and a husband with Alzheimers are challenges enough. So just more TV, I'm afraid. (The DVD I expected on Thursday didn't arrive but maybe tomorrow....)

20-25. Murdoch Mysteries, S11 Eps 11-16
I watched this devotedly until it disappeared from Netflix. Lately found it on Acorn TV.

A thriller involving a man stuck in purgatory. With a decent premise, the initial scenes are highly intriguing as he finds himself stuck in rooms in which all exit doors lead back to the room, and as he finds himself reliving his wife's death on infinite time loop. He also has to attend group therapy sessions rather comically run by persons only viewed on television screens (see above). The novelty of the film sadly dissolves as it progresses along and gradually becomes more focused on tiresome ideas of morality and acceptance rather than the paradigm of purgatory.

27. 'Little Women' / 1994, Gillian Armstrong / 8/10 / USA / Canada
28. 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' / 2010, Werner Herzog / 9/10 / Canada / USA / France / Germany / UK
I didn't realize Herzog's doc was a co-production; never would have guessed he did anything with Canada.
Little Women is not a Canadian film (despite what imdb says, which I've submitted a fix for). I'm sorry, but it will not count for this challenge.

19. Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen (1965) - 6.8 - {also counts for documentary challenge} - Interesting in that this was made before Cohen was a famous singer, but when he was a(n apparently) famous poet. Other than that, it's rather ordinary. He's 30 in the film but still looks like an old man, which is strangely fitting. Thankfully brief.

Adding all the shorts now before I forget.
20. 21. 22. 23. 24. - 301 minutes of short films - {some of which also count for documentary challenge}
The Garden (2017), Children of Fogo Island (1967), Divine Fate (1993), Newfoundland Scene (1951), Rejoue-moi ce vieux mélodrame (2001), Toys (2005), Idizwadidiz (2017), Stitches in Time (1987), I Am Here (2016), Hedgehog's Home (2017), Ripple Rock (1959), Victoria Bridge (1987), Two Spirited (2007), Angel (1966), Ti-Jean Goes Lumbering (1953), Ti-Jean Goes West (1957), Ti-Jean in the Land of Iron (1958), Christmas at Moose Factory (1971), The Owl and the Lemming (1971), The Owl and the Raven (1973), Totem Talk (1997), The Man and the Giant (1975), The Treasure of the Grotoceans (1980), REW FFWD (1994)
Most are from the NFB website. Best were I Am Here, Hedgehog's Home and the two Inuit Owl legends at 7.8. Worst was Rejoue-moi ce vieux mélodrame (a bonus short on the Carcasses dvd) at 3.0, followed by Idizwadidiz at 3.2.
Curiosities include Totem Talk (5.0) which was bad 90s acting with green screen that tries really hard to be hip but it totally unhip; Children of Fogo Island (7.2) and Newfoundland Scene (6.8), two early documentaries about life on the Rock that won awards in the early days of the Etrogs; and REW FFWD (7.2) a pseudo-documentary from Denis Villeneuve that kicked off his career and is just as weird as you would expect.

My goals for this challenge are...
- to see at least 12 films (to hit level 12 of the xx/xx award) DONE!
- to see at least one film from each decade 1920s-2010s (I've already seen the 1910s one on UNESCO, and haven't been able to find any others online, including shorts) {9 decades so far}
- see all available remaining UNESCO films from Canada (Carry On Sergeant, Lest We Forget, and Les dernières fiançailles) DONE!
- see at least 10 films from the Top 100 Canadian Films list (and get a silver medal and back into the top 10 in the process DONE!; gold and top 5 if I'm really ambitious) {8 films so far}
- see at least 1 film from all of the other Canadian lists I follow (22 lists in total) {17 lists so far}
From Bonavista to Vancouver IslandShow

It's up to you as host. The credits of 'Little Women' do though express special thanks to the British Columbia Film Commission. Producer Denise Di Novi has strong connections and links to Canada (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denise_Di_Novi). I wouldn't go altering IMDb details unless you are 100 per cent certain that there was zero Canadian involvement in production.
That's all, folks!

A morally bankrupt comedy full of sleazy characters. Corey Haim is hard really to dislike, but his character's decision to break up a woman's marriage just to get laid is icky, and the two other main characters are obnoxious. His best friend is even more obsessed with sex and then there is Robbie Coltrane as a pervert who admires the panties of teen girls and tells the boys that what matters most about a woman is if she "puts out" - a sentiment that the film never once challenges. Keir Dullea at least has a couple of solid moments here as Haim's father.

Marijuana and its history of prohibition in North America is the subject of this insightful Canadian documentary. Compromised of interviews with dealers and politicians, plus well-sourced archive footage, intriguing economic arguments towards legality (tax revenue) as well shots inside some of the basements where hemp is grown and so forth, this is much more engaging than Grass - an earlier Canadian documentary on the subject. The film becomes preachy and agenda-heavy towards the end though as it keeps drilling the same pro-legalisation points home.

The story in Two Sisters did not do much for me, but the animation (especially the green on black parts) was breathtaking. The Old Lady and the Pigeons was really something else. I did predict the twist a couple of minutes before it occurred, but still there's lots to love here in the absurdity of a starving man dressing up as a giant pigeon in order to be fed by senile lady. Fellow DTC entry Black Soul sadly did little for me though. I did like the animation style but nothing on screen really gripped me other than the sequence set to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. Les raquetteurs is a perfectly adequate fly-on-the-wall documentary about an annual festival/event in Canada. Without any narration or interviews though, I found myself a little lost and disengaged. Loops though was a pretty cool way to end off the Challenge. Typical McLaren innovation and playfulness.

And yeah - unfortunately that's it for me this year. I had really hoped to surpass my personal record - or at least equal it - but I need to get my place ready for New Year's Eve and time is ticking away. I thoroughly enjoyed this Challenge, even though the pace I set for myself left me a little fatigued in the past couple of days. Canada has such a rich cinematic industry. I particularly dig all the low budget horror/sci-fi Canuck stuff from the 70s, 80s and early 90s, but then the country has some great documentaries, hilarious comedies, touching dramas and conceptual thrillers too. Lots of great discoveries this month. On the filmmakers side of thing, Michael Snow has been my biggest discovery, but it was great coming close to completing the filmographies of other worthwhile directors - Xavier Dolan, David Cronenberg (seen everything from him now), Astron-6 - and finding some other worthwhile directing talents: Ed Hunt, William Fruet - oh, and I've managed to turn myself around completely on Atom Egoyan. He's no longer a director whose acclaim baffles me. Turns out most of his lesser seen films are better than the one that got him Oscar attention.

Favourite film watched specifically for the Challenge: February. Runners-up, in rough order of preference: *Corpus Callosum, So Is This, Remember, Exotica, Heartbeats, Operation Avalanche, Stories We Tell, <--->, Wavelength, Being Different, End of the Line, Memorandum, Trapped and yes, Being Canadian.

25. The Corporation (2003) - 8.2 - Top 100 {also counts for iCM Forums challenge and documentary challenge} - Great doc that surprisingly didn't feel too long despite being 2.5 hours. Amazing to see what's changed in the last 15 years, what hasn't changed, and how people's attitudes have shifted. The segment on Bolivia was especially interesting knowing that Morales came to power after that.

26. Sonatine (1984) - 8.0 - Top 100 - I was about to watch Changeling to hit the 80s, but at the last minute decided to watch this instead since it was 20 minutes shorter and hit one more of the lists I track. So glad I did switch, because this was a nice gem. Didn't really know what to expect, and the custom made subtitles need a bit of work, but it's a beautiful portrait of two girls in a lonely world, and a great examination of adolescence.

My goals for this challenge are...
- to see at least 12 films (to hit level 12 of the xx/xx award) DONE!
- to see at least one film from each decade 1920s-2010s (I've already seen the 1910s one on UNESCO, and haven't been able to find any others online, including shorts) DONE!
- see all available remaining UNESCO films from Canada (Carry On Sergeant, Lest We Forget, and Les dernières fiançailles) DONE!
- see at least 10 films from the Top 100 Canadian Films list (and get a silver medal and back into the top 10 in the process DONE!; gold and top 5 if I'm really ambitious)
- see at least 1 film from all of the other Canadian lists I follow (22 lists in total) {18 lists done}
From Bonavista to Vancouver IslandShow

04. What keep you alive, by Colin Minihan (2018) 7/10

Beautifully shot, and I enjoyed the cinematography, but the plot isn't really original, the viewer can guess the film with a 30-minutes advance...

And this ends my participation to the challenge...

BTW, I notice that IMDb haven't (so far) accepted your edit to the entry for 'Little Women'. I have reservations about your adjudication but I shall accept it as I am not certain one way or the other. I'm not going to go back through all my posts to renumber them but I'll pick up from 29 with this, my closing post.

30. 'The Luck of Ginger Coffey' / 1964, Irvin Kershner / 8/10 / Canada / USA

31. 'Red Riding Hood XXX' / 2010, Ashlynn Brooke / 4/10 / Canada

32. 'Le parti québécois: l'affaire d'une génération?' / 2016, Bruno Boulianne / 7/10 / Canada

I had thought before this one got under way that it might have been coming a little bit hot on the heels of the 2017 Canadian Challenge but I actually ended up really enjoying it and found several new favourites along the way.

Happy New Year and many thanks for hosting, Fergenaprido!
That's all, folks!

I'll give people another 24 hours before I make the final update, so maxwell can finish his monthly and yearly challenge stats.
