From a smattering of lists, but mostly the Badmovies.org list, which i started working on because I was in a pissy mood one night and wanted to be productive here, but didn't want to be challenged. All of it terrible, some of it hilariously so. Highlight was The ABC's of Sex Ed..., which was amazing in a non-sober state. The teacher and kids collectively saying all the different terms for "penis" was amazing.

99. Hitler Youth: The Nazi Child Army (2018)

This is the first of a two-part docuseries about the Hitler Youth. While I knew of the Hitler Youth from history classes here in the USA, I didn't know how compulsory it was - if you were of a certain age, you essentially couldn't escape it. And the way they describe the brainwashing techniques is eerily prescient.

100. Dirty Money: Payday (2018)

This episode is about payday lending practices in the US and how they fuck over millions of people. But woe is the lone executive who designed the predatory practice, featuring such heart-wrenching scenes as "my Indy car got repossessed" or:

Interviewer: "Do you consider yourself a moral person?"
Shitbucket: "I consider myself a business person."

Titled after the thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution, this documentary looks at a loophole in the amendment that removes human liberties if one has been convicted of a crime. The main focus here is the corporatisation of the US prison system with economic models that require a quota of prisoners. A side focus of the documentary is the way that African Americans have been stigmatised as potential criminals throughout the twentieth century to make it easier to lock them away. A compelling look at whether the USA is really "the land of the free".

18. Earthlings (2005)

Animal suffering is the subject of this documentary that takes a scathing look at how animals are abused by humans for food, clothing, sport and medical research. The film explicitly parallels Nazi concentration camps to the way animals are treated, telling off humans for their "speciesism" (prejudice against other species). And "telling off" is accurate since the film is more angry than it ever is persuasive, with a lack of any solutions making it hard to accept the case against medical research etc. Joaquin Phoenix's voiceover narration is nicely poetic though.
The solution is to stop exploiting animals, man up and deal with it without them.
The way to do it is to force-educate people and hope they care, i.e.:

What medical research are you referring to? The healthiest diet is low on or lacking animal products.
And yeah, you could have watched Dominion (2018) instead. It's made in Australia, is more watchable and is also on YouTube.

That'll give me nightmares, Armoreska. I hardly ever buy meat but, as a sometime meat-eater, I do feel uncomfortable and nauseated. Thanks for sharing that, I guess. I wonder whether I'll go for the nut roast over the turkey and ham on Christmas Day!

Where can I find a nut roast? That sounds great! As a vegan, we are spoiled in L.A., but I recommend getting protein from sources other than meat. My whole life I had suffered from congestion. Once I got rid of the animal products...voila! Plus everything else functions better, too. Initially changed my diet because of health reasons, but it turns out animals benefit from it too...so win-win.

Yep, I saw your recommendation for that one in the iCM comments section for Earthlings.

I'm not really interested in getting in a huge debate about animal rights. I did think that Penn and Teller covered the subject well though, examining the arguments both for and against, and as someone who lost a large number of family members during the Holocaust, I frankly found the comparison in Earthlings a little insensitive.

This documentary meticulously assembles archive footage from across the twentieth century to depict the USA's changing attitude towards marijuana. The propaganda/scare clips from the 1920s and 1930s are hilarious, with claims that it will make you go insane and turn you into a murderer! A couple of animated sequences aside, the film is entirely archive footage though, which does not quite sit right. Without interviews or expert commentary or opinion, it eventually grows tiresome to listen to Harrelson tells us his beliefs on marijuana again and again.

I don't know about L.A., Allison, but these (https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source= ... 5454206615) are the ones I like most. They're available in our favourite local health food shop. Hope you get to sample some. I find them scrumptious!

And, yeah, obviously compensation for what one might be missing out on from meat is important. My sisters are amazingly inventive in this regard and always cooking up a storm and passing on tips! Vegans both - of the most wonderful, non-confrontational, compassionate kind!
That's all, folks!

85. Tokyo Idols (2017)
This doc focuses on, as the title suggests, idols singers in Japan, young girls who dance to pop music and sing along with it while creepy 40-year-oid guys cheer them on. It's a very bizarre and vaguely unsettling sub-culture but from what I've seen and what the doc portrays, it doesn't seem to do the girls any active harm, instead offering them a springboard into bigger successes like record deals and the like. The doc does shed some light on a growing culture of viewing women from afar rather than engaging with them which Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance book also touched on.

86. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)
Well, ok. So the doc gives a convincing argument. The problem is if you actually look up the facts it sites, it seems to really hardcore cherry pick statistics and studies to over-emphasize the points its making and in some cases give straight up incorrect information based on things taken out of context. I find this tactic rather unsavory in a documentary.

87. Derby (1971)
It follows the lives and interactions of men and women who participate in roller derbies. It feels very "of the time" with a kind of unstructured, rambling feel to it, focusing less on the roller derby itself and more on the personal lives of the people involved, watching them hang out and shoot the breeze, discussing other hobbies they have, family life, etc. I honestly had trouble getting into it.

88. Nova: Top Gun Over Moscow (1996)
Pretty neat doc on Russian fighter jets and how their dogfighting style is different than American pilots. It was kinda interesting to learn about some of the extreme maneuvers that these Russian pilots excel at but it's a little bittersweet to see this style on its way into obsolescence.

89. La région centrale (1971)
Will I ever see something from Michael Snow that doesn't drive me completely insane? Probably not...

90. Viva Amiga (2017)
A doc following the rise and fall of the powerhouse Amiga computer. It has a nice pace and offers lots of good info about the founding of Amiga, what made it special and its eventual demise at the hands of IBM. It's everything The Chiptune Story should've been.

91. Author: The JT LeRoy Story (2016)
I was pretty totally unaware of this completely bizarre and deeply fascinating story of a pseudonym gone completely out of hand, swallowed up in celebrity culture. I really dug it and was absorbed in the whole preposterous story as it unfolded.

92. Home Movie (2001)
Neat, quirky doc from Chris Smith, the director of American Movie, that profiles several people with odd housing. A gator farm, a Rube Golbergian gadget house, a house built for co-habitation with cats, a house in an old underground military installation, a treehouse in the middle of nowhere Hawaii, etc. Entertaining and breezy. Not as insightful or focused as American Movie but still a good time.

93. Between the Folds (2008)
A doc that delves into the ancient art of origami, showcasing origami as art and origami used as science and math tool as well as the fusion of the two and the beautiful results that come out of it. I found it to be quite interesting seeing amazingly intricate origami statues of ornate dragons, towers collapsing into flowers, etc. as well as how teachers and professors integrate origami into their lesson plans and research studies.

Fantastic

Morris strikes again, with his apparently interminable quest to create the world's most complete canon about epistemology. This one was pretty good, and you can sense that Morris feels empowered by being unconstrained by a feature length movie's time constrictions. I have to admit that the dramatic reenactments left me cold in the early going. They puzzled more than enlightened, but I eventually realized that they didn't make sense because the whole story (as protagonist Eric Olson repeatedly explains) makes no sense. Fantasy reenactments with Peter Sarsgaard are themselves a statement on the hazy way governments distort truth.

I apparently need to check in here more often with the time/ability to comment...

@tourdesb: How did you like Missile? It's my second favorite Wiseman (behind only Welfare), and opened my eyes up to a whole new world of US military that I never even considered.

@allisoncm: Totally agree with your view of The Central Park Five - I feel like I learned a lot about that case from the doc, including the social context surrounding the arrest and conviction. It was especially impactful for me, because I watched that during the African American challenge, and it filled in a lot of the cracks left by other films I was watching that month.

@sol: comment in Canadian thread. But yeah. Agreed.

@Mate_cosido: I LOVED LA 92 and quite enjoyed Reel Injun. I'm glad you found those!

@flavo5000: A few comments. Cowspiracy has been on the periphery of my watchlist for a while, but your comments are keeping it on the outside of that periphery - while I'm sure I'd agree with the conclusions of the doc, I'd agree that the tactics you described aren't good. I watched Author a while back, but I had the opposite reaction - I have negative memories of it because all I remember thinking is that the people should just act like adults and it would solve most of the issues. And I almost started Between the Folds earlier today - I went in a different direction, but your description is going to bring me back to that.

99. Hitler Youth: The Nazi Child Army (2018)
100. Dirty Money: Payday (2018)"
101. Nostalgia for the Light (2010)

Double w/ faves. Nice Chilean doc about astronomy in Chile, as well as the search for the "disappeared" during the Pinochet regime. Solid way to combine the stories, but it all felt a little force for me.

102. Hitler Youth: Child Army's Last Stand (2018)

More discussion surrounding the fact that membership in the Hitler Youth was compulsory, which is not the message you get in the West. This was a pretty fascinating look at how propaganda and education can combine to create some really horrific conditions.

103. Make Happy (2016)

I'm qualifying this as "it won the the 2017 ICMFF - Doc" section. 12th Rewatch. I love this - brilliant art piece and a joy to behold. (But not a musical, as much as I want it to be.)

Didn't really care for that one, maybe because I'm not a US citizen, maybe because I worked for MBDA a long time ago.

After having seen about half of Wiseman filmography, my favourite is Welfare, followed by :
Adjustment and Work
Ex Libris
Blind
Law and Order
Juvenile Court

I might keep his movies from the 90's-00's for next year's challenge :)

I wholly agree that these people In Author were idiots. I just liked the trainwreck aspect of it for the same reasons that I liked Exit Through The Gift Shop, just seeing how far off the rails it was going to go.

@Mate_cosido: I LOVED LA 92 and quite enjoyed Reel Injun. I'm glad you found those!
Yes Reel Injun was good, but LA92, was quite a ride, one of the most powerful documentaries i've seen, i was vaguely aware of the whole Rodney King affaire, but god, how can any one think that the US is the land of the free? i really wanted to burn a car while i watched it, and then felt bad about it, hehe, i'm not so sure about the ending though, it had a feeling of, well now you all shake hands, clean the streets and case closed, but i probably just took it the wrong way, and the whole Watt riots parts, were to imply that if things don't change it will keep happening

If you are looking for another Wiseman film to watch, I'd recommend Model if you can find it. I watched a small handful of them on third/fourth generation VHS back in the day (~2006) and Model came off as my third favourite after High School and Titicut Follies. Fourth for me was Missile.

94. The Real Story: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (2012)
In the same series as The Real Story: Scream I watched earlier, this one digs into the UFO abduction story that Spielberg based Close Encounters on. It's pretty standard UFO stuff if you've watched a lot of these kind of things. It was fine.

95. The World Of Philip Pullman (2006)
Exceedingly dry interview and biography of Philip Pullman, the writer of the His Dark Materials trilogy. There are a few interesting anecdotes in here but overall it is a chore to get through for the most part.

96. Chimpanzee (2012)
A fluffy but well-filmed Disneynature doc about an orphaned chimp who is adopted by an older male. It's all very adorable as narrated by Tim Allen but it really doesn't have much substance to it.

@tourdesb: How did you like Missile? It's my second favorite Wiseman (behind only Welfare), and opened my eyes up to a whole new world of US military that I never even considered.
If you are looking for another Wiseman film to watch, I'd recommend Model if you can find it. I watched a small handful of them on third/fourth generation VHS back in the day (~2006) and Model came off as my third favourite after High School and Titicut Follies. Fourth for me was Missile.
I can actually find all of the works by Wiseman :)
Of the 10 Wisemans I've seen, Model was middle-of-the-road for me. There were some parts I enjoyed (e.g., the ~7 cascading legs scene), but I just don't care much to hear about the struggles of pretty people.

All this Wiseman talk has me in the mood to watch one of his films...

I wholly agree that these people In Author were idiots. I just liked the trainwreck aspect of it for the same reasons that I liked Exit Through The Gift Shop, just seeing how far off the rails it was going to go.
Now that's an interesting connection - I loved Exit Through the Gift Shop, but never would have thought of that in relation to Author. I guess I just like trainwrecks more in terms of being crazy, not in terms of being idiots.

I can't remember - did LA92 talk about the Ferguson unrest (or riots)? Because yeah - things haven't changed. If you've seen the #BlackLivesMatter tag on Twitter et al. or heard anything about the Ferguson situation, you'll know things haven't changed. if you're not familiar, the Ferguson situation sparked off the current round of massive protests. It's relatively common sad depressing news here, to be honest.

41. S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (Panh, 2003). Similar to the later The Act of Killing, this doc confronts the guards and "interrogators" (torturers and executioners) of the Cambodian prison S21. A total of ~17,000 people were sent to that prison, "interrogated" and executed in the period of 1975-1979. Seven people survived the prison of which three were still alive at the making of the film. Of those three two are in it - and one of those has a breakdown right in the beginning of the movie and just can't continue. But the last guy carries on, listening to the stories and reenactments of the guards and "interrogators", confronting them with their deeds and calmly but persistently pointing out how they dehumanized their victims and created these mental "blockades" that they were "just following orders" (where have we heard that before?) and had no choice in the matter. Chiliing to watch.

While searching for The Central Park Five on IMDB, I found that Ava Duvernay directed some new episodes about them as well. I'll have to check it out, but it seems like more of a time commitment.

As someone who is lactose-intolerant, Cowspiracy shone some light on why dairy was not working for me. Some very important things. I'd recommend at least watching it. I
