(Norden is the name of the area in all scandinavian languages) (The two other: Norðurlandaþjóðir/Pohjoismaat)


Nordic teen movies disagree with the age rating system in the states

Goal: Watch as many movies from the Nordic countries and autonomous territories as you can (or want).

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- For Mini-Series or tv shows the 180 minutes rule applies - regardless of episode length. (The reason for the expansion is to not give the locals too much advantage)
- Rewatches are welcome, but do explore something outside og Bergman, Kaurismäki, von Trier and Dreyer.
- You have to post year of release. If you don't I will not count them in the challenge. (The reason for this is to figure it what movie it is, particularly as many of you will use aka titles)
- Please post original title (and aka if you want).
- Please post country/countries.

There are lots of Nordic films on Filmstruck (mostly Criterion doubles by the aforementioned usual suspects) - If you have FS, grab them by the 29th.

Inuk is also good (only Danish subs available though). I mainly used Google translate to watch it, but it's also pretty easy to recognize many words if you're English speaker.

I could do that but I haven't quality controlled it. Some of them are simply not eligible, and i'd rather keep 100% lists in the OP.

I want to be in this challenge as the minimal movies I have watched from the countries in this area have done pretty well for me so far. Alas though I have had a tendency of late to fall asleep in movies with subtitles due to me relaxing on the lounge to pay attention instead of sitting at my computer while watching. All the same though I am going to give it a go to see if I can find a movie that will knock The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo off of the top of my favourites list for this region.

I am happy to take suggestions (noting that I haven't done well with Bergman or Von Trier. The Nordic movies that have done well for me include the Millennium Trilogy (2009), The Wave (2015), A Royal Affair (2012), Jag - en oskuld (1968), Homesick (2015) & Happy, Happy (2010). All these movies currently appear in my Top 100 Foreign Language movies list I keep on IMDb taking into account all movies I have seen since July 2016.

In for at least 10, I'll be concentrating on noir this month though so I dunno what I'll get to. Thinking of going through early Bergman, I've seen most of them but 20 years ago or so and memories are dim. Or Kaurismäki brothers... probably nothing very outré, I'm fairly ignorant in this region and still have lots of famous films I'd like to see. Nordic noir, of course...

I'll think I'll just start with the Stavanger movies. Without them we probably wouldn't have Lykkeland either. Mongoland took cinemas by storm in 2001 and after that there have been quite a few movies from that area. Ans some actors has become househhold names. - This one is about surfers in Norway (Rogaland is basically the only major place in mainland where people might surf, or else they need to go to Bear Island, Ålesund, Lofoten or other far-reach areas.)

Another Stavanger movie about shady business deals. Not well recieved. It's no Walf of Wool Street.

Oooh! Cool! I remember those screenshots you posted awhile back of your resume, I thought they were awfully nifty. For this one, is it something more substantial than the back of your head? That seems to be your acting trope. Perhaps a profile shot this time?

1. Summer with Monika (1953)

I'd been meaning to get to this Bergman for a while, and this challenge was my motivation. This is a nice coming of age story in a sense - a young couple, each experiencing their own difficulties in life, run away together one summer to be together. As she gets pregnant, they return to life and society, only to discover that life sucks. And it does. I haven't gone through those experiences they've had, but I've had those "being an adult is hard" moments more and more as the years go on. The first third of the film did kinda drag for me, as I just didn't care and wanted to see where it went. But solid end and good feelings of bliss during the summer.

There is plenty of blood and gore here with some particularly nasty moments as a man's skull is ripped apart and other characters hanging by their intestines are shown in graphic detail. The film takes a long time to warm up though after its intriguing opening twilight chase scene set to the Sugar Plum Fairies tune. During the build-up, we are introduced to several characters, but they remain pretty interchangeable, and even when the film gains focus and things turn gory, it is never feels half as funny as the kooky premise had the potential to be.
