25. Shoot the Piano Player (1960)

I think this might be my favorite Truffaut. A super fun comedic noir film, though I thought the comedic elements worked better than the noir aspects.

26. Murder by Numbers (2002)

Rewatch. Two high school kids are bored and decide to commit a murder and get away with it. But best laid plans... I remember liking this better than I did upon rewatch. I found it pretty conventional with a wide array of annoying characters that all had too much backstory that distracted from any sense of narrative. Apparently, this was based on the same source material as Rope, and Rope is by far a better film.

05. Assault on Precinct 13, by John Carpenter (1976) 8,5/10 - Rewatch

I would understand if this film didn't count as noir, even though it occurs in a precinct office and the characters are policemen and convicts. Still, anytime I see a precinct, this is the first film that comes to my mind, and the noir theme made me feel like rewatching it...

06. Raman Raghav 2.0, by Anurag Kashyap (2016) 7,5/10

Indian neo-noir, with a demented serial killer and an even crazier, addicted to drugs, policeman. This takes place in the sordid streets of Mumbai, and is very dark. I'm quite fond of Kashyap's revamping of noir themes in Indian tones... Ugly and Gangs of Wasseypur were also very interesting films.

04. This Gun for Hire, by Frank Tuttle (1942) 8/10

5. Murder, My Sweet (1944): 7.8 - The more everymen take of Dick Powell on Marlowe, didn't really work for me. But beside that this was a more than decent noir.

Noir, n'est pas une couleur, c'est un genre de filmShow
1. High Sierra (1941): 7.5
2. Dark Passage (1947): 7.8 -
3. Don't Bother to Knock (1952): 8.2.
4. The Big Sleep (1946): 8.5

A Danish neo-noir. As the title character waxes poetic about her knowledge of snow and abilility to intuitively sense that something is amiss, the film initially comes off as a whimsical and overly mystical. As the movie wears on though and the conspiracy comes to light, it transforms into a 70s style paranoia thriller. There is also a great science fiction twist in the final third that the film might have benefited from fleshing out in greater depth earlier on. The overall film questions morality as well as the pros and cons of scientific research.

An updating of Shakespeare's Othello. Set in the '60s London jazz scene, the film adds in technology well as he docters an audiorecording of the two supposed lovers. The film also benefits from moody skies and the sumptuous black and white photography is gorgeous. With the Othello character relegated down to a mere supporting player here, the film never quite reaches the emotional powerhouse of Shakespeare's original tale. This is nevertheless a thoroughly encapsulating take on the classic story with strong performances all round.

9. No Orchids for Miss Blandish (St. John Legh Clowes, 1948) [TSPDT 1000 Noir Films] 7
The first real noirish movie seen so far: a little heavy on the romance part but rather enjoyable for the rest.
Image
10. Twin Peaks S3Ep2 (David Lynch, 2003) 7-
There are some intriguing elements but for now it is a succession of vignettes reconnecting with characters from the first seasons: waiting anxiously for the show to really start...

12. House of Games (David Mamet, 1987) [TSPDT 1000 Noir Films] 6+
Actually a predictable con movie which only turns noir at the very end. Much more could have been done with Lindsay Crouse.

49. Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru / The Bad Sleep Well (Akira Kurosawa, 1960)

Did Francis Ford Copolla have this film in mind when working out the first scene in The Godfather, I wonder; certainly this is one of the more memorable opening wedding scenes I've seen, and if we restrict it to wedding scenes in crime/gangster films, what besides the Copolla is it's competition? And it's a very solid film all the way through, though at 151 minutes it does strike me as a little too much of a good thing, given how simple that good thing really is - a fairly simple revenge story influenced significantly by "Hamlet". A great cast lead by a commanding performance from Toshirô Mifune as Nishi, the new son-in-law and secretary to Iwabuchi (Tatsuya Mihashi) and including Kyôko Kagawa, Takashi Shimura and Chishû Ryû, terrific b/w Tohoscope photography, and an overriding feeling of bleakness and nihilism provide for a pretty memorable experience, though I'm not entirely sure that the off-screen climax, narrated by a secondary character just before the end, entirely works even if it's redeemed by a great last scene. Still it's one of the darker and more cynical noirs from this era and something that Hollywood just couldn't have done in the production code era.

50. Fear No More (Bernard Wiesen, 1961)

From the Image "Weird Noir" 2-disc package, and not listed on any major noir lists, though it certainly fits the genrestyle - if far from a "major" film itself. In fact it fits into a small sub (or sub-sub) genre that probably has a label but, lacking any that I know I'll call the "Drive Me Insane" noir, in which a person - typically a young woman - sees something happen, typically a murder, and then everyone around her disbelieves her and in fact tries to prove that it didn't happen. Last year I watched My Name is Julia Ross, a better example, and Hitch's The Lady Vanishes is perhaps the prime mover in this area. This one involves a woman (Mala Powers, the only name I recognized) on a train who sees a dead body, then is taken for the murder herself, gets away, and finds herself asking for help from an initially unsympathetic Frenchman. If you've seen just a couple of this kind of film you can guess most of what happens, and it's not particularly well done though the opening 15-20 minutes are pretty solid.

51. Incident in an Alley (Edward L. Cahn, 1962)

The cheapest of the cheap - this has the most low-rent, obviously z-grade studio sets that I've seen in anything this month - story of a cop who is dealing with a small youth gang in a tough area of the unnamed city and ends up shooting a 14-year-old boy, and his struggle to clear himself and deal with the guilt. It's not bad, and like the previous film, starts out well but goes in a fairly inevitable and less exciting direction. The screenplay is based on something by Rod Serling, so I might expect more, and indeed in the social relevance arena, in questioning the actions of a police officer, it's a bit ahead of it's time, but otherwise this is pretty darn routine and the ending clean-up feels both rushed and emotionally cheap.

52. Män som hatar kvinnor / The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Niels Arden Oplev)

Never had a huge amount of interest in this one, except that I wanted to see it before Fincher's remake - and I want to see the Fincher film only out of completism as I just have two of his films left to see and I generally at least like his work. And hitting two of the challenges made it the right time I guess. Well, I can totally see why Fincher remade this, as the film (I have not read the books this series is based on) gets into areas where a couple of Fincher's films have gone - the religiously-motivated serial killer, and the general police procedural story involving crimes long past (Se7en and Zodiac, respectively). Unfortunately this just wasn't as interesting as either of the DF films, or as interesting as I'd hoped it might be, frankly - perhaps because, once again, the resolution seemed almost pre-ordained and nothing was particularly surprising. Also, though we have Nazis involved in a modern-day story, the political elements are really muted; and finally, though both Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist are fine in their roles, they remain a little too simplistic as characters at the end - especially in a 2 1/2 hour film. And I wanted to see more of how Lisbeth deals with her "guardian" after the memorable scene early on where she confronts him. All in all this just felt too aware of it's genre history, and rather by-the-numbers, and the horrible yellow-green cinematography and generally uninteresting mise en scene didn't help. It didn't bore me, but it sure didn't make me care much either.

53. Le doulos / The Finger Man (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1963)

And here's a film which also has an inevitable, and even somewhat predictable last scene, but where that inevitability works because of the relationships that have been developed between our two main criminal protagonists - police informer Silien (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and thief/murderer Maurice (Serge Reggiani); we can feel enough for their friendship, and for the (mostly unspoken) history between them care at least a little bit about what happens - and we've seen how bad they both are, and how much they deserve what's coming to them. An excellent, really dynamic opening robbery/murder, one thief killing another and taking the loot, sets the stage for an elaborate series of double-crosses and double-dealings, and many bodies pile up - and until near that finish, we are never quite clear whose side Silien is in fact on; and I'm not 100% even now that his story is the true one; it's a really excellent example of the unreliable narrator, and the Rashomon-like multiple versions of truth. As is often the case in Melville the role of women is problematic - VERY problematic here - but at the same time we are never in doubt that these are really bad guys, so I'd be a little bit hesitant to call the film itself misogynistic, even if it does seem to suggest that honor among thieves is more important than anything else - including treating women like something more than tools. But it's a discussion worth having for sure and it's certainly one reason why I often find Melville troubling. All in all though, pretty terrific and for me pretty close to the best of the director's noir work. I suspect this was a particularly heavy influence on John Woo.

This Swedish noir has drawn comparisons to Citizen Kane. but unlike with Kane and its inquisitve journalist though, it is unclear why the couple are conducting an investigation better suited to the police. Her motive also has more importance than the meaning of 'Rosebud' in Kane, and thus may have benefited from being revealed earlier. Eva Henning is excellent throughout though as the melancholic young lady and the dark, low-lit shots are superb - especially the opening nine minutes, right up to a mere hanging shadow conveying all.

Well, if that's your review for Dragon Tattoo, don't bother with the other two. I finished the 3rd one last night, and I agree with ororama in the other thread that the 2nd and 3rd are definitely a step down. They do a pretty good job at wrapping up loose ends and underexplored areas from the first one, but do so in a much more conventional way than the first.

As I learned last night, the novels were originally supposed to be part of a 10-part series, but Stieg Larsson died before he finished the 4th novel. So there was a lot of backstory and characterization that could be capitalized on later that will just never materialize.

I am usually fairly anal about watching a whole series once I start it, but I dunno, may break it here. I have the 2nd and 3rd films out from the library right now though so who knows? But I don't know if I'll watch anything tonight, and almost certainly won't the next couple of nights, and then it'll be December so good excuse to say fuck 'em.

I'm the same way (I'm dreading the last Sharknado movie). But with me and the Millennium trilogy, the first movie started at a 9/10, and the other two dropped to a 7/10. I really quite enjoy the Lisbeth Salander character so my interest was maintained throughout the series.
