08 transsiberian 2008 - 4/10
09-10 maniac 2018 - 9.5/10

not sure how many points to assign maniac. some parts are half an hour, some an hour. some are very noir, some are not at all. two seems fair. anyway, it's spectacular.

54. The Killers (Don Siegel, 1964) (re-watch)

I re-watched the 1946 version a year or two ago, intending to do a double-feature night, but for some reason didn't do so. So now this one, again, when my distinct memory of the '46 has cooled a little bit, unfortunately. That one is quite solid though for me not top tier, and this film remains also a solid entertainment but on just a slightly lower level. If noir is primarily a distinct visual style - as certainly many critics argue - this color, brightly lit, rather flat-looking example definitely wouldn't cut it. But if we expand our definitions a little bit, if we find noir in a conjunction of style, genre, character, plot, and mood, then this qualifies as well as the original, or as most color examples in this decade, especially in the even more nihilistic, pessimistic and as Stuart Kaminsky points out in one of the supplements to the Criterion disk, pathetic ending. Perhaps because the original film's investigator is a journalist not personally connected with the events that are retold, our doom-laden story gets a little bit of light and even humor in it's ending in 1946; here it's Lee Marvin, who with Clu Gulagher kills John Cassavetes in the very first scene, who is our primary protagonist, so we know things aren't going to end well for anyone involved. Well, except the girl (Angie Dickinson), maybe the girl, right? Ah but she's a femme fatale among femmes and though Dickinson's performance is pretty one-note (this seems to be a fault of the writing just as much though; I remember Ava Gardner's role in the original being a little more nuanced), we soon come to know that we shouldn't be rooting for her either. She's probably the weakest link in an otherwise strong cast that includes Ronald Reagan in one of his best roles, his last before retiring to try to destroy California and then the whole USA; given that he's a crook-turned-businessman with a soul of money, it's an appropriate send-off.

That's it for me, I won't be around for at least the next day, perhaps a couple of days. Thanks max!

Ten best first-time viewings:

Flicka och hyacinter / Girl With Hyacinths
Le doulos / The Finger Man
Night Has a Thousand Eyes
Plunder Road
The Crack-Up
Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru / The Bad Sleep Well
Nora Prentiss
The Brasher Doubloon
The Accused
The Mob

21. All Night Long (1962)
22. Girl with Hyacinths (1950)

23. The Man in Grey (1943)

Image

This film plays out like an extended soap opera episode with overwrought performances and music to match and it is hard to nut out what the filmmakers were trying to achieve by placing so much faith in fortune telling superstitions. The framing story, involving World War II era descendants of the protagonists meeting at an auction is actually much more affecting. There are scattered effective scenes here for sure, like a storm raging outside as the best friend mulls over her deceit, and a burning diary, but this is mostly dull and stiff melodrama.

24. Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954)

Image

This noir benefits from atmospheric, shadow-heavy photography and both Emile Meyer and Neville Brand are effectively cast as a warden and prisoner riot leader respectively. More time is dedicated to Brand than Meyer though, which leaves the 'warden torn between sides' dynamic with much untapped potential. The down-to-earth denouement hits all of the right notes though and while we never get to know the prisoners well as individuals or see the hardships of their prison treatment, the film raises quite a few questions about human dignity.

25. Strangers in the Night (1944)

Image

Clocking in at less than one hour, the characters and story feel a little undernourished here, however, the Laura-like elements work quite well. Helene Thimig also really gets into the swing of things as an eccentric mother and the film features one of the most jolting crash scenes ever committed to celluloid. The plot when fully revealed leaves a bit to ponder too and with an expanded script and budget, this could have been an emotionally devastating drama. It does, however, work fine as a Hitchcock lite type of thriller.

26. Human Desire (1954)

Image

Broderick Crawford is well cast here as a burly man with anger and jealousy issues. Of course, it does not make sense for him to be annoyed at his wife for fooling around with one of his superiors after begging her to seduce the man in an attempt to get rehired, but Crawford's insecurity at having such a younger and more attractive wife is heartfelt, and this may have been a far more interesting film with Crawford as a protagonist. Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame do okay with the other main roles here, but it's pretty formulaic stuff.

I'm exhausted after that long movie marathon. And that's it for me. Thanks for hosting, max!

Just a reminder, as everyone is reporting their final viewings of the month, to check to OP to make sure there aren't any errors with their score. If there are, let me know so I can fix them. OP is up-to-date as of psycho's post (#453) above.

I have one final update which I'll post sometime tomorrow afternoon/early evening, if that's not pushing it for lateness. The last few days had been spent enjoying ICMFF films and I missed updating my noir progress for a few days.

Here's a beauty of a musical number from Khosla's breathtaking and exquisite 'Kala Pani', with Madhubala as the woman reporter helping Dev Anand with his investigations into his father's imprisonment; the film is a noir-infused gem of remarkable poise and balance in the surveying of social issues, corruption and illegality within the justice system, and the romantic entanglements of a potential love triangle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TlyDx8UN10. This left me smiling for ages.
That's all, folks!

Thanks maxwell for hosting and I apologize for joining in so late...

01. I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (Mervyn LeRoy, 1932) [proto-noir]
sensational ending but the film as a whole is very good and quite brutal.
02. Dip huet seung hung (The Killer, John Woo, 1989) [rewatch/neo-noir]
I watched a crappy copy for the Chinese challenge and thought maybe I didn't enjoy it fully because of said quality, but no, I just didn't like it.
03. Lat sau san taam (Hard Boiled, John Woo, 1992) [neo-noir]
This one would be the best Woo film if not for the extremely protracted ending. It's almost 1/2 the film. Chow is the most charismatic mf as per usual, but Tony Leung doesn't mess around either.

The last two are on some neo-noir lists but if you don't wanna count 'em, I won't hold it against you. Wasn't very noiry for me this monf.

05.Le deuxième souffle (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1966) [french neo-noir, rewatch]
Noir! What is it good for? Absolutely noth--*shot by Walter Neff*Show

Bonus Challenge: Have you watched the Noir years (1940-1959)?
Congrats to frnoir frbrown for being the first person to watch a film from all 20 years! Not only that, but our Noiriest Noirmeister has completed the bonus challenge for a second time! And as if that weren't enough, frbrown also is the only person to complete the bonus challenge a third time! :satstunned: Congrats also flavo5000 for being the only other person to complete the bonus challenge twice! And a final congrats to jdidaco, jeroeno, OldAle1, and psychotronicbeatnik for taking the time to explore each of the years from 1940-1959 (and a bonus thumbs-up to OldAle1 for doing in "chronologically").

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winner is funkybusiness for "Noir! What is it good for? Absolutely noth--*shot by Walter Neff*" because that's just funny.
