89. Cat People (Paul Schrader, 1982)
90. Friday the 13th (Marcus Nispel, 2009)

What do we learn from watching this ALL NEW AND TOTALLY DIFFERENT YET STILL THE SAME reboot of this mediocre-to-awful franchise? That even low-budget shlock horror films can look pretty good these days, production values certainly having improved in many respects since 1980; that fake boobs are in today along with lots of dirty (and often quite inappropriate) sex talk; that diverse casting is certainly more of a reality, though one can't help but notice that the two "ethnic" types are both guys, and our token black and token Asian dudes are buddies with each other, while all the white dudes have hot white girlfriends (mostly blonde). PROGRESSIVE! Oh and also Jason has to be practically a supervillain now - in the opening sequence he somehow manages to apparently teleport from the tents in the woods to his lair, he's super-strong, can apparently climb walls like a spider, etc etc. And music is no longer of much importance, and the actually fairly consistent POV style of the first few films which gave them at least some sense of menace is pretty much jettisoned here after the first few minutes. Overall not the very worst film in the series but bad enough.

91. The Queen of Spades (Thorold Dickinson, 1949)

Pretty decent version of the hoary old Pushkin story adapted many, many times - I saw the 1916 Protazanov film early this year myself, and I have faint memories of seeing some other version years ago, maybe a TV adaptation or episode. Anton Walbrook anchors the film as the scheming, poor (not really, but he's comparing himself to nobility) Captain Suvorin, who will do anything to get the secret of the three cards from Edith Evans' Countess Ranevskaya. Some beautiful moody noirish photography from Otto Heller is also a standout element, and the story is a little more clear than the Protazanov version which is much shorter - but at the same time, this feels a little elongated, particularly in the rather longish seduction subplot. Still well worth seeing for Walbrook.

92. Tower of London (Roger Corman, 1962)

The second film in a row I saw that's a reworking of or new adaptation of an older film or story, and in this case also I saw the earlier film (1939 Rowland V. Lee, with Rathbone and Karloff) not too long ago. The earlier film is less overtly horror; both describe the popular mythology/history of Richard III (Vincent Price in this version) climbing to power by killing everyone in his path. This one has torture scenes and several onscreen murders (though not at all explicit - this is still the early 60s and Hollywood) and lots of sequences of ghosts haunting Richard. Really low budget and it shows - b/w unlike most of Corman's films from this period onward, and with laughable miniatures, and re-used footage from the 1939 film for the battle scene, but Price is like Rathbone born to this role and he keeps it very watchable.

93. No profanar el sueño de los muertos / Non si deve profanare il sonno dei morti / The Living Dead / The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue / Let Sleeping Corpses Lie / etc, etc, etc (Jorge Grau, 1974)

Man, those titles on those 70s Euro-genre flicks! "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" is as accurate a title as any, as this is a zombie film, and a pretty solid one overall. A Spanish-Italian production with lots of talent from both countries, and American Arthur Kennedy as the asshole cop investigating a murder that spirals into something much bigger, filmed in England. Kennedy dubs himself in the English-language version I watched, not sure about the other actors though Ray Lovelock in the male lead was part-English and certainly might have provided his own voice - I don't really know his other work so dunnno. Really lovely location work too and really a pretty well put-together film, in which an experimental electronic sound-producing device, in use to kill vermin, somehow animates the dead as a slightly problematic side effect (and makes newborn babies viciously aggressive too). Lovelock and the young woman he encounters by chance (Cristina Galbó) are the first to experience the terror, and not surprisingly when they try to tell the police they aren't believed at all. Apart from the rather novel impetus for the zombie uprising there isn't much really novel here but the photography, the subtle use of a percussive score, the pretty good and plentiful gore effects and the ending are enough to make this a fairly memorable experience.

5. Homicidal (1961)

Yep, there are definite similarities to "Psycho", but it's not a straight-up copy; it's more like they took different parts of "Psycho" and shuffled them up.

Really good movie!

51. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) 6.0/10

It's hard for me to compare this one to the previous two since I haven't seen them since the 80's, but on its own it felt a little light on the horror while spending too much time and effort devoted to giving Pinhead his backstory. Still, enough nice touches in this one that I found it enjoyable, especially the various cenobites in the last half hour or so.

52. Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) 5.0/10

Whoa, things kind of fell off a bit of a cliff there going from part three to part four, didn't they? It tries to build up steam in the last third but doesn't quiet get there. The hellhound was pretty cool, though.

53. Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) 4.5/10

Pinhead goes noir! and boy does it drag. The cenobites aren't terribly imaginative (the guy on the stairs wasn't bad I guess) and there's barely a whiff of Pinhead here. It's pretty clear why this one went straight to video.

FTV:32: The Devil's Chair (2007) 5

Image

Put together in just over two weeks, the limited time to write and cover pre-production feeds into co-writer/(with Simon Boyes) co-editor/(with Hasse Billing) director Adam Mason & cinematographer Ole Bratt Birkeland giving the flick a frantic, angry atmosphere of freeze frames for cynical narration to play above, and jolts of gore. Showing real ambition, Mason links the Devils Chair to an excellent Lovecraft-style monster, made up of a mix of practice and CGI, which gets axed by burning red cuts into torture horror.

Firing a Guy Ritchie-style gangster in the middle of a Horror movie, the screenplay by Boyes and Mason leans too heavily on the “Mockney” narration, which ends up as sounding more obnoxious than angry. Swiftly nailing a macabre mythology with puzzles, the writers aim for the “Meta-Horror” sub-genre of the early 90’s with the mix of Gothic chills and 4th wall breaks, but miss by the smash into reality not explaining why everyone is there with Nick West (what a memorable name!) Carrying himself with the style of fellow Guy Ritchie actor The Stath,Andrew Howard gives a very good turn as West, thanks to Howard pushing West to be above the gangster dialogue with shaking nerves of terror from sitting in the devils chair.

124. The Purge: Election Year (2016)
An upstart senator who watched her family die during a purge intends to run for president and put a stop to the purge once and for all. Unfortunately it's in the best interests of the powers that be to prevent that from happening. Overall, I'd put this one on about the same level as The Purge: Anarchy, doing a solid job of purge planet world building. It's not an amazing film, moving in fits and starts with some dumb plot turns where characters do things that don't make sense but it isn't a bad time.

Image
125. Ringu 0: Bâsudei (2000) a.k.a. Ring 0: Birthday
This one acts as a prequel to Ringu, showing Sadako's past and how her tragic fate came to be. I just really couldn't get into this one. By virtue of it being a prequel and Sadako being alive for the majority of the running time, much of the actually horror is lacking, really only manifesting in the last 15 or 20 minutes. It leaves a pretty dull movie that answers questions about Sadako that I doubt many people were really wanting answers for.

Image
126. Take Shelter (2011)
A family man begins having what seem to be very realistic nightmares of an impending massive storm that drives everyone in it mad. The nightmares escalate from his dog attacking him to his wife and the unease he feels about the visions begins to seep into his reality, leaving him to wonder if the visions are real or if he is just going mad. While Take Shelter offers its fair share of horrifying nightmares, the real horror and intensity of this one comes from watching a man slowly break down from what he perceives to be debilitating mental illness that is slowly destroying his entire life. It's a very good film that's painful to watch.

Image
127. The Frozen Ghost (1945)
A disgraced hypnotist who blames himself for the death of a heckler at his show retreats to a spooky ass wax museum for some reason and begins to feel as if his "powers" are subconsciously causing the deaths of those around him that gain his ire. Anoher Inner Sanctum mystery, this was a pretty middling effort that has a fairly dumb plot with an unengaging resolution. Chaney doesn't look that interested in the role either and gives a pretty half-assed performance.

Image
128. Feng shui (2004)
In the grand tradition of evil or supernatural object movies like most Amityville sequels and The Boogey Man (1980) comes this cursed mirror movie from the Philippines. While it isn't terrible it plays out in a pretty generic way not unlike a lot of other Asian horror movies. It also had large chunks of film with nothing happening.

Image
129. Homunculus, 1. Teil (1916)
I had always heard a homunculus referred to as a like a tiny person. This movie instead refers to what plays out more like a Frankenstein's monster, a man made in a laboratory that goes awry when he discovers his origins. It wasn't bad but I felt like it had some of the same problems that plague many early films: slow plotting and overacting.

Image
130. Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge (1991)
The puppets vs. Nazis. That's pretty much all you need to know. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Pulpy and silly with the same cheesy stop motion puppet effects. The only notable thing about this one is that it acts as a kind of origin story of Toulon.

Image
131. Boogeyman (2005)
A man is tormented by the boogey man of his childhood, a boogey man he blamed for devouring his father. This one really seems to be have zero resemblance to the 1980 Boogey Man movie about the freaky mirror but instead offers a dumb plot and bad CGI The director seems to really want to be Sam Raimi with his sped up tracking shots, skewed camera angles and quick acceleration of chaotic shenanigans but the movie just lacks that certain oomph that the best Raimi movies have.

Another film that I have a cultural history with - I have vague memories of knowing about this film when it was new or nearly new; most likely what I remember is this Siskel & Ebert clip -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO66D07YvJs

(if you can't access YT - they were not amused). But I remember the VHS box cover also, probably this one, a clamshell case from the 80s

Image

and later I found out about the Video Nasties list, and that it had a particularly gory birth scene that placed it there. And then it was featured on RLM's Best of the Worst a few years ago and I believe I watched that when new and remembered them liking it - though I went back to it yesterday and it turns out they REALLY liked it. And I thought it was on the TSZ list or some other interesting list for some reason, but it turns out it's on a big fat ZERO official lists and apparently never has been any. And all of this is by way of me suggesting to all of those who haven't seen it that - whether you like it or not - this is certainly one of the weirdest and most unique horror films I have ever seen and easily the pick of the challenge among the more unsung films I'm seen, probably the pick of the challenge period (I'm still vacillating between this and Henry). And there's no way to really discuss this at all without spoilers so
SpoilerShow
Essentially this ends up being something like the flipside of E.T., released of course in the same year in the UK though this was a December release and so didn't appear elsewhere until 83-84 or later. What do I mean by that? In this case we have an adult, Sam (Philip Sayer, quite excellent in a film which, let's face it, is never going to be best known for it's acting) who gets taken away by a bright light at the beginning of the film in a shot that has to be in some ways a conscious echo of 2001 - stick goes up, turns into alien spacecraft, though we don't see it clearly - this was a low budget affair and they saved their FX dough for the monsters and gore. His young son is with him at the time, and three years later the young son is having nightmares which seem to impinge on reality - he wakes up covered with blood - while meantime his father has reappeared as an alien in the rural area where he'd disappeared, and has been reborn as himself in a gruesome way. Father comes back with no memory of the last three years - son is overjoyed while mom and new boyfriend are shall we say more circumspect. Strange things happen - the father eats some snake eggs, and sucks on his son's neck and gives him some strange powers - though the son's powers manifest in typically childish ways, while the father's own strange abilities are more focused. All kinds of weird shit happens, more than I want to get into now even under spoilers, and eventually father and son take off into the unkown, with not much explained, and with a trail of bodies and gore behind. I think in some ways this is about childhood dreams and fantasies as much as E.T. is - about what an alien coming down and taking the place of your father would be like - but done very much in the horror realm and in the end seemingly quite nihilistic - as far as humans go, that is - the only thing I agree with Siskel and Ebert on. But the nihilism isn't out of place in this worldview I think, and I'm unclear enough as to what it all means after one viewing such that I would never want to firmly argue for that reading. It could also be read in rather misogynistic terms - women being merely the vessels for the birth or rebirth of man or alien - but again, I think much is obscure enough that this argument doesn't strike me as compelling either. In the end it's only the boy and his dad - the boy and his alien - that really count. Like E.T.. Or not.
I hope to write more about this for next week's weekly thread, there is a lot more to this than I have the time/energy to write about at the moment; it's not that obscure a film so I'm sure many folks here have seen it, and probably didn't like it nearly as much as I did or it would at least feature higher in the icm horror movies list - but if you haven't seen it and want something that certainly is not your run-of-the-mill 80s flick, there's nothing horror - or science fiction - I've seen in a long time that I'd promote with more fervor. Those who loved Annihilation in particular I would advise to check this out.

95. X the Unknown (Leslie Norman/Joseph Losey, 1956)

And next another British SF-horror hybrid, though not nearly as memorable or unique. In fact this was apparently planned originally as a "Quatermass" film after the success of the first film the previous year, but creator Nigel Kneale wasn't interested in having his character used in something he didn't write, so a very similar story and character were created, with again an older American actor (Dean Jagger) used as the primary scientist. Losey was the original director but was replaced by Norman who apparently directed most of the film. It's an all right alien monster movie with the novelty being that this is an inner-earth monster who has broken out through a crack in the earth and is looking to eat radiation sources. It manifests as a big amorphous blob - a bit like the final stage of the monster in the first Quatermass film but also reminiscent of The Blob from the 1960 film with Steve McQueen and burns people up with radiation if they get too close. Not badly done and nicely shot but utterly predictable and Jagger is a little duller than Brian Donlevy in this type of role.

96. The Night Stalker (John Llewellyn Moxey, 1972)

Don't know if I ever saw the TV series that came out of this - I'm fairly certain I didn't see it when originally on air in any case - but I may look into it now. Darren McGavin is Kolchak, a sensation-hound Las Vegas reporter (really nice use of locations here) on the trail of a bunch of weird murders in which young women are killed at night, their blood sucked out, and teeth marks...hmmm. Kolchak goes for the vampire angle early on but his boss and the various members of the Vegas PD, sheriff's office and local government do not, and Kolchak of course has to end up being the one to save the day. Pretty good production values for a TV movie of that period, and an AMAZING cast, particularly if you're a fan of 40s-50s noir and crime stuff - in addition to the great McGavin we have Ralph Meeker, Charles McGraw, Elisha Cook Jr, Kent Smith (star of the Cat People films which I just re-watched above) and Claude Akins, and the lovely if weakly used Carole Lynley as McGavin's girlfriend. This is solidly done though the TV editing is tiresome, and I like the way the vampire is portrayed - immensely strong and fast, invulnerable except to sunlight and a stake. I'll have to take a look at that series, though unfortunately the amazing cast doesn't return for it apart from McGavin and Simon Oakland as his irascible boss (who apparently moves with him to Chicago where the series takes place? or maybe just plays a different character).

Nice to see you enjoyed 'The Night Stalker', OldAle. I watched 'The Night Strangler' a couple of mornings ago and found lots of points of interest in this sequel (I haven't seen 'The Night Stalker'). Nice locations and an intriguing cast once again (Margaret Hamilton, John Carradine). The ending in the underground lair was a bit tame (and a montage of highlights with the end credits made it feel much more television-like). McGavin made for a pleasant and somewhat irascible and irrepressible lead in his blue suit and straw hat. I liked it enough to watch any other Kolchak entries that come my way.

Amazing to think nowadays how many people tuned in across America for the 'Film of the Week'! ABC certainly scored winners with this pair.

Wonderful viewings!

Haven't seen Night Strangler, but I may check it out in the next couple of days - hard to sort through the hundreds of possibilities though. I mostly know McGavin through A Christmas Story which I've seen at least a dozen times but he's a fun actor and he keeps his comedic impulses just in check enough in this.

But more importantly, have you seen Xtro?

I haven't, unfortunately. It's one I've been aware of for a long time but somehow I've never made a point of actually getting to it. Your words certainly have me suitably intrigued.
That's all, folks!

29. Onibaba (Kaneto Shindô, 1964) - 9/10
This is the kind of movie that left me feeling like I need to watch it again to fully appreciate it, like Suspiria or Picnic at Hanging Rock.

30. Hannibal Rising (Peter Webber, 2007) - 2/10
The book was garbage and this movie is even worse. Points are given for the production design as the movie manages to feel authentic to the time period it is set in, otherwise nothing works. Especially bad is Gaspard Ulliel who plays Hannibal Lecter in such a cartoonishly evil way (Kubrick stares and all), I couldn't help but roll my eyes for like half the movie.

Hey JD, what film is this from?
Hi peeptoad. It's from the Brazilian 'As Boas Maneiras' (Good Manners), which, among many other things, is also a werewolf film... It wears all the lycanthrope cinematic references on its unpredictable sleeve, but I think the first hour (with a sense of quiet dread that reminds Denis or Polanski) is much more interesting than the slightly more traditional second one; always fascinating though, I certainly recommend it.
