A complex meta-movie from Almodóvar. The film benefits from ample ambiguity during its first hour regarding if the script (within the film) about Catholic Church child abuse is exaggerated or not, and as an abusive priest within the script reads a further script, the film almost delves into Inception levels of consciousness. Almodóvar uses great techniques to capture these layers, especially a shot that cracks open as blood pours down a face. The film gets a little lost in its second half with a convoluted murder mystery, but this is pretty riveting stuff.

Do I get a Q for this since it covers both Gay and Trans? If so, I have now conquered the letters L G T Q A P, leaving me with B and I still to conquer. Not sure how many intersex films there out there, but I guess I could watch XXY again. Any doco recommendations on the subject anyone?

ONE was the first LGBT+ magazine in the USAShow
1. Intersexion (2012) (I)
2. An Act of Love (2015) (Q)
3. For the Bible Tells Me So (2007) (Q)
4. Princess Cyd (2017) (B)
5. The Abominable Crime (2013) (Q)
6. Before Stonewall (1984) (Q)
7. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017) (T)
8. Tales of the Waria (2011) (T)
9. After Stonewall (1999) (Q)
10. Shorts (61m)
Blow Job (1963, 27m) (Flare)
Fireworks (1947, 14m) (G)
On the Roof (2015, 11m, Spain) (G)
Tvíliðaleikur/Playing with Balls (2015) (L)
11. Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton (2013)
12. Queer Eye s2e3: Unleash the Sexy Beast (2018) (G)
13. Fish Out of Water (2009) (Q)

This is a shorter documentary about the passages of the bible that discuss homosexuality and what they actually mean and how many Christian people misinterpret them. It's basically a rehashing of "For the Bible Tells Me So", just not as good. The information is solid and informative, but as a documentary film, it was just meh for me.

14. Eating Out: The Open Weekend (2011) (G)

Imagine every teen sexploitation spring break/new to college/etc. movie, and make it all about hunks of man candy rather than boobs. And you've got this movie. A gay couple goes to a gay resort and agrees to have an "open weekend", but things are complicated when one of their exes shows up. There's a subplot with a transwoman fighting over a straight guy with a straight woman, but the focus of the plot is on the gay relationships. Terrible writing and jokes, but good eye candy.

Hermaphroditus appears in Fellini's Satyricon. Maybe that fits?

Actually I think that is a tiny role, and extremely losely based on the book and other mythology.

Thanks for the recommendations, though I could only find a ~49min version of Intersexion online, whereas the IMDb page suggests a runtime of over an hour.

11. A Fantastic Woman (2017)

There are echoes of The Big Sick in the set-up here (only encountering a partner's family after a hospital incident), but this is far more downbeat and gritty than that, and yet also full of moments of pure beauty via neon lights and whimsical music, capturing the true love the pair shared. Some of the symbolism is a little on-the-nose with a wealth of reflective surfaces. Everything is pulled together well through Daniela Vega's lead performance though; her every humiliation and hesitation is heartfelt as the film spins a universal tale of grief and loss.

Adapted from Scott Thorson's autobiography, this film provides an inevitably limited glimpse into Liberace the man, who is pretty enigmatic throughout. The film also skirts around the pair's ambiguous relationship, but as per Soderbergh norm, this is incredibly engaging stuff. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon both sink into their oles, though the makeup that reverse-ages them is the real star here, and while the film leaves a bit to be desired as a Liberace biopic, it is a very decent look at how easy it is to be swept away by glitz and glamour.

I watched a 58m version of Intersexion on Kanopy, which seems pretty complete - I think it was a made-for-tv doc out of NZ. I just looked and the last 5+ minutes of the doc are credits/ads, so the 49m version you're finding is probably pretty close to complete.

15. Una mujer fantástica (2017) Chile | Germany | Spain | USA [T] 2 official lists 911 checks
Important film, and all events happen to transpersons every day. But as a movie the end is a bit lacking.
16. My So-Called Life (1994-1995) USA [G] 527 checks
There aren't an actual episode that revolves around homosexuality other than the people Ricky lived with constantly beat him.
But this was probably my first meeting with a positive view on how it is to be different. Ricky is just a friend, there is no point in making a point out of it.
So I have seen all 19 episodes for 1 point.

"Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day’s useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?
"

It would be nice if you wrote a few words what these were about, as you wander into the most obscure terrotory of us. Some of these don't even have plot keywords on imdb, so they are hard to figure out unseen.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Steven Universe. It doesn't seem to have the greatest following on this forum, but the way it handles gender identity and sexuality is utterly unique (by the dictionary definition of the word) and also simply entertaining as shit. I'm sure there is a thesis or three out there covering it. Anyway it's easily the best children's program ever made, and among the best TV shows out there right now. If you're looking for queer TV to check out for this challenge I could not recommend it any more.

This European horror film casts Delphine Seyrig as the blood-bathing Countess Bathory who, together with a female lover, cross paths with a newlywed couple at an eerily near empty hotel. The film benefits from a great setting and uses its minimal cast well, with a lot more implied than is said or shown during the film's first half. The second half is not quite so strong with a sadomasochism fetish that is never truly explored and some 'convenient' deaths. Seyrig is absolutely compelling throughout though and does well with all her very suggestive dialogue.

This revenge thriller benefits from exotic seaside locations, even more exotic costumes and some very neat shot compositions, such as when victim obscures her face (and signals her demise) by placing a wine glass in front of the camera. The intrusive extreme close-ups as the husband is grilled by the medical panel are a nice touch too. Alas, the film neglects its most intriguing aspect - the husband's experiments with human embryos and the ethics of his research - instead falling into a predictable revenge formula in which we have to suspend disbelief.

And with that I conquer B, given me seven points so far: L G B T Q A P ... only missing I. :poshclap:

7. ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto? (1984 / Pedro Almodovar / Spain) 9/10 G

Because the gay character in this plays a very small role, I wasn't sure I would count it, but since it is on the Celluloid Closet list I decided I would.

18. The Boys in the Band (1970) USA [G] 2 official lists 389 checks
Birthday party. The movie works for the first half, but suddenly all have problems, and there are too many characters.
19. Capote (2005) USA | Canada [G] 3 official lists 14 028 checks
Truman Capote doesn't really need an introduction.
20. Weekend (2011) UK [G] 4 official lists 2 335 checks
Trying to show a gay relationship. And it's just as boring as all heteronormative realtionships.
21. Mysterious Skin (2004) USA | Netherlands [G] 3 official lists 7 254 checks
A homosexual find the small town to small for him and his "job", but New York isn't exactly safe. (There are other things happening here also, but it's not exactly fun to talk about)
22. Liv og død (1980) Norway (B) 6 checks
In Norway there is basically only two diectors that regularly have made stories about this theme. Wam/Vennerød and Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen.
I think Wam & Vennerød made 3 (När alla vet, Desperate bekjentskaper, Åpen fremtid) movies with this a main plot, 1 with it as a subtext (Lakki) and several others where gay characters just show up as entertainment etc.
In this one there is a "normal" couple that meet another man, and they decide to all live together. But they have to be confronted by the 80s homophobia.
23. XXY (2007) Argentina | Spain | France (I) 2 official lists 1 383 checks
Parents want their daughter/son to meet the doctor. But does s/he want to?

Some of your views are only subtext. You can put subtext on anything to make it fit so if you find something like that be nice and provide a reason why you see it. Particularly if it's not on any of the LGBT-lists collected. Is it like Calamity Jane where the LGBT-community actually responded to the characters, or is it just some odd article writer who thinks s/he has figured it out?

1. Intersexion (2012) (I)
2. An Act of Love (2015) (Q)
3. For the Bible Tells Me So (2007) (Q)
4. Princess Cyd (2017) (B)

7. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017) (T)
8. Tales of the Waria (2011) (T)
9. After Stonewall (1999) (Q)
10. Shorts (61m)
Blow Job (1963, 27m) (Flare)
Fireworks (1947, 14m) (G)
On the Roof (2015, 11m, Spain) (G)
Tvíliðaleikur/Playing with Balls (2015) (L)
11. Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton (2013)
12. Queer Eye s2e3: Unleash the Sexy Beast (2018) (G)
13. Fish Out of Water (2009) (Q)
14. Eating Out: The Open Weekend (2011) (G)
15. Coming of Age in Cherry Grove: The Invasion (2014) (Q)

This is a documentary about Cherry Grove on Fire Island - the first openly gay community in the US. It's a resort and area on long island, and was the first place people could go and just be out and themselves without judgment. Which was especially important in an era when homosexuality was criminalized.

@albajos - thanks for the update! Question on the side challenge - how are you counting shorts? I've hit the "L" category with a short, but not with a feature-length film yet, so just curious on that.

Yes, you have 9 minutes of L, you need a feature or 51 more minutes of L-shorts.

Which reminds me, I do have the first season of the L-Word, but has never been interested enough to see it. Do anyone recommend it?

15. Coming of Age in Cherry Grove: The Invasion (2014) (Q)
16. Lavender Limelight (1998) (L)

This is a documentary that interviews seven lesbian directors about their experiences with making films, their sexuality, and life. Several recognizable names/films featured in here, and it was nice to hear about different experiences. This is, annoyingly, not even on IMDB, so I had to add it today - should be available (hopefully) within a day or two.

17. (A)sexual (2011) (A)

And this should round out my alphabet soup for the bonus challenge. A doc about asexuality. I'm glad I watched this, as I found it to be a nice intro to the subject, but that's coming from someone generally accepting of the "orientation." I'm not sure this would be super convincing to skeptics, but at least it's a place to start. I was happy to see my key question asked and answered, specifically surrounding long-term pair bonding and whether that's feasible.

I got very hooked on the show one summer when I was visiting my sister a lot. She would TiVo the eps from Showtime and we would binge watch them together (that's also how I first watched Deadwood - one of my all time favorite TV shows). I enjoyed the soap opera aspects of the show, and the acting was great. Any chance to see Pam Grier in something is worth it to me. But I never followed up with subsequent seasons to see how things turned out although I have thought about doing so from time to time.

My spoiler tag for this challenge is an homage to the show.
