3. Los santos inocentes 1984 — a.k.a. The Holy Innocents 6/10 (Spain)
Well, the novel's gimmick (telling each of the 6 chapters in just one sentences) was lost in its translation to film, although the chapters are still there. The characters are divided between rich landowners and the poor folk that simply exists to serve the rich although the younger generation doesn't seem to agree with that. I can see a certain link between the servants and the birds that are endlessly killed just to make the landowners feel great about themselves, being treated with the same carelessness.

4. Deprisa, deprisa 1981 — a.k.a. Fast, Fast 7/10 (Spain)

With a strong rise of juvenile crime in late 70s Spain and an ongoing change of society towards consumerism, Saura cast real life delinquents, bank robbers and heroin addicts for this stylish film (I imagine Tarantino likes it), using the desolate, polluted outskirts of Madrid as a backdrop. Especially cool is the heavy use of music and the subsequent silence which is used effectively near the end. Along the lines of early Japanese New Wave movies (like Naked Youth) some 20 years earlier. Rather weird that a strong female lead character is supplemented with another girl who doesn't say anything during the movie.

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winners are sol for "The Spanish Prisoner" because nothing makes me think of the Iberian peninsula like a Steve Martin film, and OldAle1's "the rain in Spain or some shit like that" because that's just funny. Congrats!

tehe

P.S. I'm surprised that 3eyes hasn't managed to locate anything from the other two Iberian countries yet. She's usually the expert when it comes to tracking down rarer films from less common countries.

06. Sie tötete in Ekstase (1971) West Germany | Spain 118 checks

5. La isla mínima 2014 — a.k.a. Marshland 7/10 (Spain)
Good, atmospheric thriller with post-Franco Transición subtext and two interesting police investigators, a leftwing idealist and an ex-fascist. Nice cinematography, especially the drone (or helicopter?) shots are memorable.

6. Furtivos 1975 — a.k.a. Poachers 5/10 (Spain)
Okay, didn't get much out of this. Imbecile comedy characters in a non-comedic drama, the animal cruelty didn't help. A disappointment.

7. Surcos 1951 — a.k.a. Furrows 7/10 (Spain)
Spain's attempt at neorealism - a countryside family struggles to find a better life in the city. It turns out decent but it's not there with the great achievements of neorealismo. At first, on wonders how such a bleak realist drama could be made in a dictatorship but it's not so illogical when you look closer: a country with the rural population leaving for the city might like to show a family that hopelessly fails doing that and there's an evident focus on conservative Christian values (and crime isn't successful). I certainly wasn't surprised at all that I quickly stumbled upon a scientific paper analyzing gender violence in Surcos, every man seems to beat everyone over honour (with men fighting back) and disobedience (women quietly accept their fate). The "highlight" of this subject is the puppet theater that the puppeteer shows the man who is supposed to sleep in his daughter's room from now on: a woman confronts her husband about losing the couple's money while gambling and gets beaten (and accidentally beheaded), the beating is called the only way to treat your wife. It feels over the top but I have a feeling they were serious about it.

Further reading (gender violence in Surcos):

8. La aldea maldita 1930 — a.k.a. The Cursed Village 6/10 (Spain)
Some nice visual and more outdated views on honour. I couldn't really follow how he found his wife again or if she really was a whore, that was a really fast sequence in the middle of a slow movie that could've used a bit more explanation imo.

1. La caza 1966 — a.k.a. The Hunt 7/10
2. La ardilla roja 1993 — a.k.a. The Red Squirrel 8/10
3. Los santos inocentes 1984 — a.k.a. The Holy Innocents 6/10
4. Deprisa, deprisa 1981 — a.k.a. Fast, Fast 7/10

6. Furtivos 1975 — a.k.a. Poachers 5/10

Image

This evil children horror film is slow to warm up with 7.5 minutes spent on archive footage of child victims of war and genocide - none of which proves the absurd thesis that children will eventually 'evolve' to the point of killing their elders. It is a further 20 minutes beyond that before the adult tourist protagonists reach the island, but the final three quarters here is incredibly well done. There are a lot of creepy slow reveal shots, lots of innovative camera angles, and the way the kids silently communicate through looks and stares alone is pretty eerie.

7. SHORTS 35 + 5 + 21 = 61 m

a) La cabina / The Phone Box (Antonio Mercero, 1972,Spain)
b) Pedro Abrunhose: Momento (Manoel de Oliveira, 2002, Portugal)
c) A Caça (Manoel de Oliveira, 1964, Portugal)

8. De Sade 70 / Eugenie... the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion (Jesús Franco, 1970, Spain/West Germany)
9. Angustia / Anguish (Bigas Luna, 1987, Spain)
10. La noche del terror ciego / Tombs of the Blind Dead (Armando de Ossorio, 1972, Spain/Portugal)

About a decade ago I was briefly friends with a guy who was a very serious Euro-horror aficionado; most of my friends have been more "arthouse"-oriented so this was something new, and I remember a fair number of conversations we had about Franco, Franju, and a couple of filmmakers and series that weren't even names to me - Jean Rollin, and de Ossorio's "Blind Dead" series - he had the cool DVD box in the black coffin of the latter series. Well even though I didn't stay in contact with him for long, his enthusiasm left a mark and I've finally gotten around to seeing some Franco, have some Rollin in the pipeline, and now I've watched the first in this series - and it definitely does not disappoint. This is very much a case of the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts - the acting isn't necessarily that great, there are some slightly dry or dull patches in the middle, some of the explanations of events seem a little patronizing...but the mood of the thing, the photography and production design, and the eerie beginning and exciting ending all combine to make one of the more entrancing experiences in this challenge for me. I loved the ruined church-monastery-city that is a big part of the setting, and this is a rare case of a film with lots of slow-mo in the action sequences that does it right - it really makes the blind, horse-riding dead Templars more eerie, weird and scary. There is also an interesting lesbian subtext here that seems to manifest as a sort of fear of men - almost like a racial (or, I guess, gender in this case) memory that exists in one of the main present-day characters, derived from the torture-murders committed by the Templars on young virgins centuries ago. At least, that's the explanation that I could come up with that makes any sense, and given what happens to another character late in the film when she's alone with a man, I think it works here. An unpleasant and violent view of sexuality as a whole, I'd say, which may turn some viewers off but I think it's in keeping with a general very dark and pessimistic tone in the film.

11. El callejón / Blind Alley (Antonio Trashorras, 2011, Spain/Colombia)

OK, I watched this for Ana de Armas, who doesn't disappoint aesthetically in her various outfits and her her sexy dancing over the credits, but unfortunately also doesn't impress much as an actress in this very mediocre girl-trapped-in-laundromat-by-psycho film that turns into something else in it's last few minutes, idiotically. Nice use of colors and lighting but really the best thing I can say about this is that it's short.

12. [Rec] (Jaume Balagueró/Paco Plaza, 2007, Spain)

Not particularly a fan of the current zombie movie trend (though to be fair I haven't seen that many), nor of found footage, so this wasn't exactly a film that was high on the list - but being October and that there's a Spanish challenge also, and that my library had it and it's short...anyway, I was pleasantly surprised, though it doesn't light my world on fire or anything. Reasonably suspenseful and occasionally mildly frightening (jump scares!) account of a reporter (Manuela Velasco, very charismatic, cute and pretty solid in this role) and her cameraman (unseen of course because he's doing the filming we're seeing) accompanying a bunch of firemen to an old apartment building where they're supposed to assist an old woman who's got some kind of medical issue which of course turns out to be ZOMBIFICATION!!! I hope I'm not spoiling anything, most of what happens from here on out is quite obvious, but again it's reasonably well done and I don't find this as ugly as a lot of FF films on DV from this era are. The religious angles brought up late in the film seem pointless and confusing to the issue at hand, so that's a demerit, but overall, worth a look.

13. No profanar el sueño de los muertos / Non si deve profanare il sonno dei morti / The Living Dead / The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue / Let Sleeping Corpses Lie / etc, etc, etc (Jorge Grau, 1974, Spain/Italy)

Man, those titles on those 70s Euro-genre flicks! "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" is as accurate a title as any, as this is a zombie film, and a pretty solid one overall. A Spanish-Italian production with lots of talent from both countries, and American Arthur Kennedy as the asshole cop investigating a murder that spirals into something much bigger, filmed in England. Kennedy dubs himself in the English-language version I watched, not sure about the other actors though Ray Lovelock in the male lead was part-English and certainly might have provided his own voice - I don't really know his other work so dunnno. Really lovely location work too and really a pretty well put-together film, in which an experimental electronic sound-producing device, in use to kill vermin, somehow animates the dead as a slightly problematic side effect (and makes newborn babies viciously aggressive too). Lovelock and the young woman he encounters by chance (Cristina Galbó) are the first to experience the terror, and not surprisingly when they try to tell the police they aren't believed at all. Apart from the rather novel impetus for the zombie uprising there isn't much really novel here but the photography, the subtle use of a percussive score, the pretty good and plentiful gore effects and the ending are enough to make this a fairly memorable experience.

Less divisive than the Line of DemarcationShow
1. La Isla Minima (2014, Spain)
2. Blancanieves (2012, Spain)
3. Timecrimes (2007, Spain)
4. Torrente, the Stupid Arm of the Law (1998, Spain)
5. The Others (2001, Spain)

I was surprised to discover this was Spanish, but hey. A woman just after WW2 hires help to tend to her estate and care for her children who are extremely photosensitive. Double with the Horror challenge.

I thought it was good, but not great - I figured out the primary twist pretty early, plus I don't really get into ghost stories all that much, so it was hard for me to feel really immersed in the film. But fantastic acting and a well-constructed film.
