10. La noche del terror ciego / Tombs of the Blind Dead (Armando de Ossorio, 1972, Spain/Portugal)
11. El callejón / Blind Alley (Antonio Trashorras, 2011, Spain/Colombia)
12. [Rec] (Jaume Balagueró/Paco Plaza, 2007, Spain)
13. No profanar el sueño de los muertos / Non si deve profanare il sonno dei morti / The Living Dead / The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue / Let Sleeping Corpses Lie / etc, etc, etc (Jorge Grau, 1974, Spain/Italy)
14. Sexykiller, morirás por ella / Sexykiller (Miguel Marti, 2008, Spain)

Spanish serial killer comedy with the lovely Macarena Gómez as a bitchy college girl who kills everybody she has even mild problems with, that eventually becomes a zombie movie after the one guy she likes invents an analyzer that can capture brain waves after death, which he offers to the cops to use when they're after the killer. It's also got lots of campy dancing and wild colors and costumes and a bit of sex and loads of blood, and it should have been better than it was but the screenplay just goes all over the place and it seems to not be able to decide whether it wants to go into full-on horror mode or not. Tolerable, and thankfully not too long, but pretty forgettable apart from Gómez' legs.

15. ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto? / What Have I Done to Deserve This? (Pedro Almodóvar, 1984, Spain)

Early Almodóvar film that is billed as a comedy, but has to be considered a pretty bleak one if that's what it is, with his usual early muse Carmen Maura as Gloria, at the center of several families and individuals, most living in the same somewhat crummy but large apartment building in Madrid. Her family has it's problems - her taxi driver husband doesn't make much, and doesn't give her enough to pay the bills - and can't get over a German woman he knew years before in Berlin; one adolescent son is a drug dealer, the other sleeps with older men; mother-in-law doesn't like her and is kind of crazy. Next door is a prostitute who seems a little happier, upstairs a bitchy woman who is constantly down on her telekinetic daughter; there's also an impotent cop, a couple of translators who hire Gloria as a maid, and lots of other little bits and pieces of stories that weave in and out. While this stayed entertaining and watchable throughout, it never gelled into a coherent whole for me and it's probably my least-favorite of the early films that I've seen so far. It didn't help that the commercial American DVD is cropped to 1.85 when the film was shot 1.66 - not necessarily a big deal for most films, but the director's compositions here are very tight and everybody's heads seem to get cut off - also it just isn't that good a transfer and the customary bright colors just aren't as vibrant as they could be.

All done for me, thanks for running it maxwell. I did pretty well with the few films I saw - oddly enough, all of the best ones were horror, none of the non-horror entries really stacked up except maybe Oliveira's short A Caça. Wish I'd gotten to more but I was determined to go for 100 in horror and there's no way I could put much effort into the other two challenges as well. Maybe next time...

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. The final winner is albajos for "El Pollo Diablo" because devil chickens are funny as a concept, and I'm pretty sure I've eaten that dish at my local Mexican restaurant. Congrats!

Thanks for hosting, max! I wish that I could have participated more here, but with the Challenge occurring in the same month as Horror and the intriguing Queer Challenge, I was probably always doomed to neglect this one. :(

Actually - this is something that we should keep in mind with the current 2019 Challenge Schedule discussion. Do we want to run something popular against Horror so that the country/region does not end up being neglected?
