This Ernst Lubitsch comedy is very visually arresting with most of the shots framed in shapes other than circles and rectangles; some shots look like kissing lips, others look like jagged lines and some even have borders like gaping jaws. The set design is magnificent too with ostentatious winding staircases, giant rocking horses and crazily large doors. Alas, amidst all this the central romance is pretty lifeless and the comedy does not always work (most gags involving mad scurrying) but there are amusing moments here - especially whenever Victor Janson is on screen

Finally got around to rounding up my silent watching over the past week or so. Didn't get to see as much as I'd hoped, but I'm still enjoying it and that's what ultimately matters.

11-12a. The Hayseed (Arbuckle. 1919). 27 minutes.
11-12b. The Garage (Arbuckle, 1920). 25 minutes,
11-12c. The Floorwalker (Chaplin, 1916). 29 minutes.
11-12d. The Fireman (Chaplin, 1916). 24 minutes.
11-12e. The Vagabond (Chaplin, 1916). 34 minutes. (Rewatch)

13. Moulin Rouge (Dupont, 1928). Lavish British production set in Paris and directed by a German. Makes for a somewhat subdued presentation of French decadence (there were boobs, but only once and only from a distance). Kind of run-of-the-mill melodrama, to be honest. Recently purchased for $3.25 on blu-ray, this could've looked better, it had some scratches and some image stability issues (plus a little softness in the image), but it was a worthwhile purchase nevertheless.

14. Drifters (Grierson, 1929). About as far from Paris and Moulin Rouge as you can get, this documentary follows British fishermen in the North Sea. Clearly inspired by Soviet montage, this is much more interesting than it sounds like.

While Gloria Swanson's performance here does not come close to her best known turn (duh?), she brings appropriate zest and energy to this comedy. Highlights include Swanson juggling dishes (and accidentally flipping pancakes down blouses) at her restaurant, Swanson role playing with a stuffed toy dog, and Swanson engaging in a zany boxing match predating City Lights by more than half a decade. We are never shown what she sees in her beau and the film is pretty slow-moving in between the above mentioned highlights, but this is okay stuff.

15. The Coward (Barker & Ince, 1915). Not bad, given that it's a contemporary of that other Civil War movie from 1915, and as such practically neolithic in its style by comparison. An extra on the BFI blu-ray set of Birth of a Nation.

While there are some amusing moments to be had here, this is more of a drama than a comedy, and when the laughs come there is very little of the slapstick stuff that Buster Keaton did best. He actually provides a decent dramatic turn as he becomes the subject of manipulation and humiliation here, but the scattered funny sequences ultimately work better. Memorable bits include Keaton's failed attempts to get arrested during a police raid (to impress his girlfriend) and a Stock Exchange where he inadvertently gets his own back at those taunting him.

Much thinner and more agile than in his later years, W.C. Fields provides an energetic turn here that needs to be seen to be believed, running madly about and jumping up and down when hypnotised into believing that he is a lion. His hypnosis does not occur until over halfway in though and while there are some surefire laughs early on from how incompetent he is, it is much more fun to see Fields assertive - even if some his actions are much than a tad mean-spirited. The reactions of the supporting players to Fields throughout are priceless though.

There is certainly something interesting going on here as the husband (played with relish by Werner Krauss) is too distracted to notice that his wife (an equally well cast Jenny Jugo) is being romanced by others, but this single joke is pretty much all supporting the film in the humour department throughout. There are certainly some nice touches - most notably how crazed some of the title cards become as Krauss shouts at Jugo, but not quite enough to support a full feature length film. The conclusion feels a little too rushed too.

This was apparently intended as a comeback movie for Mabel Normand and she certainly brings the right mix of zest and pathos to the role. The script does not, however, support her. All of the funniest moments are written for James Finlayson as an incompetent butler whose role (wandering about in his pajamas during working hours) gets stranger as the film progresses. The story feels very slapdash too; at first she seems to be pining for love, then she is fighting with dogs, then she gets an idea of how to score free hot meals and so on.

The jokes at the expense of Bebe Daniels not being as sick or weak as she believes here tire quickly, but all of the sanitarium mix-up scenes work very well, with a lot of clever wordplay gags resulting from ambiguous terms like "cases" and "bruise" vs. "brews". It is also quite funny how easily she mistakes the drunks hiding out there for mental health patients. Everything unfortunately culminates in a more chaotic (and consequently less funny) climax and the denouement feels extremely rushed. It is amusing though to see William Powell cast a conniving bootlegger.

While there are some nice directional touches in this John Ford comedy (e.g. a hand reaching to the camera to say 'stop', as above), the story is very second rate without any tension or sense of urgency in the air. It is also difficult to warm to the lazy title character, who has a way with children but who is too self-absorbed to ever be effective at his job. J. Farrell MacDonald certainly tries his best and has some great timing as he absolves himself of blame for certain misdeeds. Generally speaking though, this is just further proof that Ford was no good at comedy.

The filmmaking behind-the-scenes stuff is endlessly fascinating here, especially as we see Chaplin at work (see above) and Erich von Stroheim on the set of Greed. Eleanor Boardman is also very appealing in the lead role as she grows ever more fascinated by the industry. The part where she thinks the desert exteriors are a mirage is also a nice plug of movie magic. The film is, however, needlessly complicated by a bizarre subplot in which her husband turns out to be a serial killer of sorts and Lew Cody struggles to make the role work.

While this Clara Bow comedy pushes some positive messages in terms of true love and letting one's heart decide, it actually comes off as a bit of a mean-spirited affair, especially with the way Harvey Clark's marquis is used as a pawn in her plot. For a comedy, the laughs are pretty scarce too - mostly confined to a single wax museum scene in which Bow keeps mistaking wax sculptors for real persons and vice versa (see above). With her wide expressive eyes, Bow carries the film to a certain degree on her presence alone though.

Lois Wilson is well cast as the easily manipulated title character here who gradually learns to assert herself and Clarence Burton has some fine moments as her husband to-be. The story is more than a little farfetched (how easily she is tricked into marrying and how that ultimately ends) and the film is not very well paced with lengthy title card character introductions during the first five minutes. Still, it is hard not to like Wilson's character here with her progression and eventual realisation that there is more to life than serving others.

The plot here is paper thin; it mostly consists of Harry Langdon moping around brokenhearted, inexplicably dressing in drag for minutes on end and failing at multiple points to properly attend to fires. The biggest laugh comes from Langdon inadvertently rescuing a mannequin from an apartment fire (see above). There is also an amusing impromptu speech to a group of feminists, but little else here works. On a positive note, the plot is less silly and improbable than Langdon's latter The Chaser (which also see him in drag... for much longer).

This was the first film that Langdon directed and alongside the pitiful The Chaser, these early directing outings are said to have killed his career. Three's a Crowd is nowhere near that bad though. Langdon turns in a very human and sympathetic performance with plenty of pathos, but it is not a particularly funny film. There is a great bit where he falls through a trap door and a surreal dream sequence is on the mark, but the laughs are pretty scarce, resulting in a film that is a little too downbeat for its own good.

Amusing moments come here from W.C. Fields inadvertently smashing other cars, his failed attempts at suicide and golf mishaps. Only around half the gags work (Fields hiding by pretending to be a cow is pretty lame) but this is generally a fun poke at how who you know can change how others perceive you. As an actor, Fields lacks the energy he would bring to Running Wild one year later, but he does okay as the indignant would-be inventor. There are some cool cinematic techniques at hand, especially the ear close-ups as rumours are whispered.

A (small) collection of shorts,

81. Max, der Zirkuskönig/Le roi du cirque (King of the Circus, Édouard Émile-Violet, 1924) 8/10 (33 min), Im Schatten der Maschine (In the Shadow of the Machine, Albrecht Viktor Blum, 1928) 9/10 (22 min), Tusalava (Len Lye, 1929) 8/10 (10 min) (Total: 65 min)

That's it for me, thank you for hosting Knaldskalle (oh, and hope you do encounter the amazing Pina Menichelli at some point; RBG mentioned 'Tigre reale', but don't miss her legendary owl-like performance in 'Il fuoco', you'll fall at her feet - Divas were coined after Her!). Silent September for ever!!!
