The most notable aspect here is Norma Shearer's casting in both lead female roles, playing each character with idiosyncrasies so distinct that they truly seem different. That said, the lookalike casting does not do much to further the story (in fact, it seems odd that nobody comments on their similar looks) but the editing here is breathtaking, with juxtaposition cutaway shots that almost make the two women look like they are moving in sync. It is too bad that the love quandrangle plot here is a mere trifle because this is quite a technical marvel.

This was western genre luminary William S. Hart's final starring role and his charisma does not disappoint; he radiates confidence and is frequently shown as both tough and kind throughout. In the film's most memorable scene, Hart forces a child-beater to apologise to both a boy and his dog by dipping the culprit's head in a water trough repeatedly (see above). Unfortunately there is very little of interest here beyond Hart's performance. The supporting characters are very one-note, the romance is lifeless, and the film only provides a glimpse in the stealing of Cherokee land.

An intriguing early meta-movie from F.W. Murnau. While most of the movie is dedicated to the film-within, the wrap-around segments tie in very well and there is a great bit in which an actor breaks the fourth wall to address the camera. The biggest treat here is though is a beardless Emil Jannings as the duplicitous title character in the film-within. The movie relies too heavily on title cards and letters to convey the ins and outs of the story and the denouement is rushed, but this looks great as per Murnau par (see the the vase shot reflection above).

1. Spione (1928)

Lang's Metropolis follow-up. A bit of a let-down. For all the action and hijinks, the melodrama was unbearable and I found myself a bit bored.

13. The woman in white / The unfortunate marriage (1917)
I read the novel in my teens -- my first experience of multiple viewpoints in literature. Here it's updated from the 1850s to post-WW I. Count Fosco is replaced by a Brazilian for some reason. There are zillions of movie/TV versions of the novel but this is the first I've seen.

While there are some acute running themes here (relatives who do not realise how obtrusive they are etc.), this is basically a series of elaborate comedy sketches loosely connected together. That said, the main three sketches (a turkey; a car ride; a bottle of chloroform) are hilarious, especially the latter with Harold Lloyd running about his house, mistakenly convinced that the police are out to get to him. The car sequences are technically well filmed too and superb as Harold is (as always) here, he is almost upstaged by the energetic turkey!

This was only Frank Capra's second movie, but his remarkable directing eye is already visible with striking birds'-eye-view shots (see above), nothing but close-ups for the first two minutes and plenty of sight gags. The humour is a little hit-and-miss overall though. Many gags are telegraphed too far in advance, but the black comedy with Harry Langdon's failed attempts to kill his bride certainly works. The film does not, however, do so well fleshing out the title; can wearing a pair of long pants for the first time really change someone and their life so much?

OK here we go finally.

Started off with a Lubitsch silent comedy 3fer:

1. Das fidele Gefängnis / The Merry Jail (1917)
2. Meyer aus Berlin (1919)
3. Die Bergkatze / The Wildcat (1921)

The first of these is a solid working out of a common theme to both Lubitsch and comedy generally - the spouse spying on her/his partner, suspicious of the other having an affair and/or being a wastrel, drinking, etc. In this case it's the wife (let's face it, it's usually the wife, we men are scum) trying to catch her husband, who is supposed to go to jail for a day for drunk and disorderly behavior, at a party. She disguises herself, and gets her husband to flirt with her - thinking she's another woman. There are also a couple of other plots going on involving various flirtations and indiscretions, and all the men are pretty much drunks, including jailer Emil Jannings. There's nothing altogether remarkable here but it's typical Lubitsch panache and lots of fun and plot to be had in 48 minutes.

Meyer is rather problematic, at least to this viewer seen through the prism of Jewish stereotypes and comedy over the past century. I'm certainly not forgetting that Lubitsch - also the star of this film, another marriage farce - was Jewish, or that attitudes about stereotypes and humor have both changed considerably since his time, but his character of Meyer comes across as one of the most over-the-top ingratiating Jewish merchant types I've ever seen on film. I don't know if I'd call it "offensive", exactly - Meyer isn''t a bad guy, isn't greedy or thieving or overtly dishonest, but I definitely found the constant mugging and such grating. The plot of the main character lying to his wife about being sick, going off to the mountains for adventure isn't exactly novel or interesting either, though there are occasional fun bits and the ending a little risque for the time. Meh, not terrible but definitely the worst of the 20-odd films from the director I've seen. Also, where is Ossi Oswalda who is supposedly in this?

Thankfully Die Bergkatze shows the director at or near his early peak, helped immeasurably by Pola Negri in the title role. I think this is the first Negri film I've seen - she plays "Rischka" (RBG, I know where you original username comes from now), daughter of the leader of a group of bandits that harass a military outpost in the mountains, who falls in love with the new Lieutenant who comes to the fort. This is a chaotic, crazy farce made all the more fun by it's use of wild costumes and even wilder sets and camerawork - the first third of the film or so is almost entirely shot with sequences masked into shapes ranging from circles to thin rectangles to snake-like squiggles. The sets aren't precisely "expressionist" but they seem to come from that space, mixed with something more akin to what we see later in films like the Dr. Seuss-written 5000 Fingers of Dr. T - semi-surrealistic children's fantasies, I guess you could call them. But it is the wild and crazy Rischka who makes the strongest impression - strong indeed even decades later, given than Helena Bonham Carter seems to have borrowed her whole early look from Negri's ragged gypsy wildcat wardrobe and hair. I'm fairly sure I'd put Die Puppe as Lubitsch's greatest German film but this is certainly not far off that very high mark. Just wonderful.

non-comedy Lubitsch:

4. Sumurun (1920)

Well, actually it does have plenty of humor - it's a forerunner in some ways of some of the less-serious Hollywood Arabian Nights and other forms of exotica of the 30s-50s. This is a love quadrangle - pentagle? I'm not sure, it got to be a bit much, of a slave girl dancer in love with a merchant, the sheikh who buys the slave girl for himself abandoning his former favorite (the title character) for the new blood, a hunchback also in love with the dancer, and plenty of other complications. It's all a bit messy and doesn't add up to a coherent whole but it looks great - typically lavish Lubitsch style for the time, not really "middle eastern" but exotic at any rate, and we've got Pola Negri again as the dancer, the director as the hunchback, and Jenny Hasselqvist makes a rather mysterious, brooding Sumurun. Not one of Lubitsch's best I think but interesting, and there are a few good action/chase sequences to boot along with all the romance.

5. Von morgens bis mitternachts / From Morn to Midnight (Karl Heinz Martin, 1920)

Wildly inventive over-the-top expressionist crime-melodrama about a bank cashier who despairs of his dull life, and when captured by the spell of a beautiful woman dripping with jewels, decides to change his course by stealing a bunch of money and moving away, where of course destiny does not meet him on the terms he had hoped for. There was really too much here for me to get in one viewing - not that the plot is so complex, but the craziness of the sets and photography, equaled only by Caligari perhaps, make actually watching and digesting all that's going on a challenge - one thing I didn't really comprehend until near the end for example was that the same actress (Roma Bahn) was playing several roles, because the baroque nature of the visuals in some way kept me from paying as close attention to human details as I should have. And maybe I was too tired; though this is certainly a dream-like film in many respects, I'm fairly sure if would profit most by being seen when quite awake.

6. Becoming Charley Chase I - 12+13+6+11+11+13 m = 66 m
a) Peanuts and Bullets (Nick Cogley, 1915)
b) Love and Armor (various directors, 1915)
c) Settled at the Seaside (Frank Griffin, 1915)
d) Love, Loot and Crash (Frank Griffin, 1915)
e) A Versatile Villain (Frank Griffin, 1915)

I got the VCI 4-disc Charley Chase box set a couple of years ago and have been waiting for the right moment; here it is. Frankly, there's a reason - judging from these shorts, a few others in the next round that I'll be writing up soon, and a few other appearances I've seen over the years - why Chase isn't even close to as well-known as contemporaries like Chaplin Lloyd or Keaton, or even Fatty Arbuckle or perhaps Harry Langdon. He just doesn't have that strong a screen presence, and perhaps he realized it as he worked on a lot of different character types over the years - even a decade after these shorts he was still attempting to find the just-right persona. Oh, not that he wasn't successful or popular at the time, but he never found something like Chaplin's tramp, Keaton's stone face, or Lloyd's shy guy, and his appearance - a bit tall, reasonably good looking but nothing out of the ordinary - just doesn't help matters. In these first five he plays heroes, villains, geeks, assholes, and he just doesn't stand out. Love, Loot and Crash is the only one that I found in any way notable because it has some pretty cool chases and action sequences devolving from crooks and a boyfriend making cases of mistaken identity, and it's fast-paced and well constructed enough to be a lot of fun. A Versatile Villain is sort of a western-themed film so that interested me also but nothing much is done with it apart from the villain looking a lot like Chase and that adding to the confusion. Meh to CC, so far.

7. Very early comedy shorts - 64 minutes total
a) The Enchanted Drawing (J. Stuart Blackton, 1900) 2 m
b) The Finish of Bridget McKeen (Edwin S. Porter, 1901) 1 m
c) Rêve et realité (Ferdinand Zecca, 1901) 1 m
d) Terrible Teddy, the Grizzly King (Edwin S. Porter, 1902) 1 m
e) Uncle Josh at the Moving Picture Show (Edwin S. Porter, 1903) 2 m
f) A Romance of the Rain (Edwin S. Porter, 1903) 4 m
g) Humorous Phases of Funny Faces (J. Stuart Blackton, 1906) 3 m
h) That Fatal Sneeze (Lewin Fitzhamon, 1907) 6 m
i) Help! Help! (Mack Sennett, 1912) 8 m
j) Mabel's Blunder (Mabel Normand 1913) 13m
k) A Reckless Romeo (Roscoe Arbuckle, 1917) 23m

The real standout and find here is That Fatal Sneeze, in which an older man makes a boy sneeze with pepper at the table, and the boy later turns the tables by filling the mans room with pepper, at which point the man proceeds to start sneezing in larger and larger fits, with his sneezes eventually knocking people over, scaring dogs, destroying property. Expertly edited, this very much had the feel of a classic Warner Brothers cartoon to me, or something like Tex Avery's "King-Size Canary". Mabel's Blunder is nearly as good, with the theme of identity confusion as well and complexly played out as it probably can be in 13 minutes, and I liked the Arbuckle a fair bit as well, with the Uncle Josh and Humorous Phases rounding out the top 5. Though none of the rest are worthless to me, they don't offer much beyond historical curiosity - though I suppose that's true of all of these films to many people here.

8. Harakiri (Fritz Lang, 1919)

Apart from alternate-language versions of the second Mabuse film and M, and the re-edited one film version of the Indian diptych, this was the last Lang film I had left to see. Lang was the first old dead director I really got interested in, way back in the 80s, so it's been a long journey; I could have watched this a while ago but as it happened I just never got around to it, and now with this challenge and having the Kino silent box set on BD, why not? Well, I knew I wasn't going to be in for an exciting finish to Project Fritz Lang, so I can't say I was toooo disappointed, but this German rendition of the Madame Butterfly story is pretty dull stuff all in all. Nothing really stands out - there's a priest character, and the Cho-Cho-San character (her called O-Take-San) is supposed to become a Buddhist priestess before she ends up as a geisha, and the priest's nastiness is really responsible for the way the story turns out as much as the European husband's thoughtlessness; I don't think that's in the opera though perhaps it's in some other version of the story - but it doesn't really make things more interesting. It just doesn't seem to have a lot of life and the acting feels quite muted, though the set design is rather nice if not really particularly accurate to Japanese culture. A curio for Lang completists or those interested in the source material, that's about it.

If improbable, the premise (judge ordering a husband and wife to trade roles for a month) comes with promise and lead actress Gladys McConnell really gets into the swing of things as she assumes Harry Langdon's mannerisms. Unfortunately, the focus of the film is rather the less funny Langdon. There is little fun in watching Langdon prance about in female clothes and it is even less funny to watch other male characters inexplicably mistake Langdon for a woman, despite him never once looking feminine (he even wears his bowler hat while in drag).

1. Furcht / Fear (1917, Robert Wiene) 4/10

2. Thomas Graals bästa film / Thomas Graal's Best Film (1917, Mauritz Stiller) 5.5/10

3. Unheimliche Geschichten / Eerie Tales (1919, Richard Oswald) 4.5/10

4. Daddy-Long-Legs (1919, Marshall Neilan) 5/10

5. Vingarne / The Wings (1916, Mauritz Stiller) 6.5/10.
An earlier version of Dreyer's Michael. Hits many strong notes, but a little too basic.

6. Madame de Thèbes / The Son of Destiny (1915, Mauritz Stiller) 5.5/10
Solid melodrama.

7. Sången om den eldröda blomman / Song of the Scarlet Flower (1919, Mauritz Stiller) 6/10
Had great expectations, but turned out to only be a moderately good melodrama. A shame given what Stiller had already made at this point.

8. Meyer aus Berlin / Meyer from Berlin (1919, Ernst Lubitsch) 6.5/10
Fittingly cheeky for Lubitch in this era, but surprisingly flat and ordinary cinematically. The Oyster Princess from the same year looks spectacular, this looks almost a little ugly in spots. Still very fun, though the comedy is too exaggerated.

9. Goluboy ekspress / China Express (1929,
With spectacular shots, action packed mayham and great soviet montage this propaganda film may be a bit too heavy, but watching the slave revolt extent from the back compartment to the front was a great experience (and will remind you of a few very recent outings). 8/10.

10. Seven Footprints to Satan (1929, Benjamin Christensen)
At time so absurd that it comes across as brilliantly surreal, and with the final twist everything will certainly make sense. I can see why many would find this insanity great, but it just struck me as far too thin and silly, especially the opening, and from a cinematic perspective it could certainly have been far more visual. Note, this is a horror comedy, and expect to be entertained. A good effort for sure. 6/10.

11. The Jack-Knife Man (1920, King Vidor)
Pretty standard sentimental fare with a weather-beaten but good-hearted poor/tramlike man, and a child to care for. 6/10.
12. Maldone (1928, Jean Gremillon)
Poetic and rythmic cinema, with the kind of sensibility that makes Gremillon one of France's most interesting directors of this period. Sadly an over-reliance on a relatively dull story arc leaves it shy of greatness. 7/10

13. Nochnoj izvozchik / The Night Coachman (1928, Georgi Tasin)
Heartbreaking and psychological look into a sense of extreme hopelessness. While it is ticking in just under the hour, it feels far grander, largely due to the sense of being in a nightmare while fully awake. 8/10.

14. Arsena Jorjiashvili / The Murder of General Gryaznov (1921, Ivane Perestiani)
Poor propaganda, without any visul finesse. 3/10

15. Prividenie, kotoroe ne vozvrashchaetsya / The Ghost That Never Returns (1930, Abram Room)
The version I watched had some badly done voice acting added over random scenes (often without translations as well), the silent underneath however was very good. Visually secure and a solid journey, that may just be a little too underdone in the middle stages. The opening and the world it created was great, and the quality of the copy was far better than expected. 7/10.

16. Poslednij attraktsion / The Last Attraction (1929, Ivan Pravov & Olga Preobrazhenskaya)
Could have been far better visually but this story of broadly neutral, even anti-soviet theater people, forced to work for the revolution, while slowly seeing that it's not all bad, was in a way cutely comedical and surpriingly not so positive of the Soviets as you'd expect a propaganda film to be. 6/10.

17. Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame / I Kiss Your Hand, Madame (1929, Robert Land)
Isn't it unfair that this nobleman had to become a butler and thus lacks the respect of his "peers". Despite the slightly off framing, this was a cute and fun drama comedy, well done in every way. 7/10.

18. Chuji Tabinikki Daisanbu Goyohen (1927, Daisuke Itô)
Strong early samurai film, with many great shots and an interesting character journey. 7/10.

1-5. TIH-MINH (FEUILLADE 1918) 5 PTS
6. when the clouds roll by (fleming 1919)
7. don't change your husband (demille 1919)
8. ich möchte kein mann sein (lubitsch 1918)
9. le avventure straordinarissime di saturnino farandola (perez 1913)
10. filibus (roncoroni 1915)

11. caino (carlucci 1918) from the same mysterious italian studio as filibus, this is a much different beast: a convoluted melodrama whose title gives a good bit away, it's rather too long but quite watchable, if unbelievable. for instance, who marries a man you've already caught cheating with your own sister -- in a church yet

Image

the miserable one dies but haunts the living

Image

her unfaithful husband fakes his own death but can't escape his fate --

Image

which you've probably guessed by now from the title. recommended only if you like the superdramatic acting style of italian silents

21. Peter Pan (1924)

Image

This silent movie faithfully retells Barrie's story accompanied by some amazing special effects for the time. Whether it be the cast (and ships) floating through the air, or Tinkerbell bouncing about while clearly more than just a torchlight trick, the film looks divine. Peter's cave lit by jack-o-lanterns is a nice touch too and with her boyish looks yet nubile body, Betty Branson makes for a fantastic Pan. The film never really ventures deep into its characters, but it is still a pretty appealing movie and nicely whimsical without ever seeming childish.

22. Robin Hood (1922)

Image

This Douglas Fairbanks project certainly deserves full points for ambition, with over an hour dedicated to Fairbanks growing disillusioned with the way the king's brother is running things before deciding to adopt the Robin Hood persona. This first hour is nowhere near as interesting it sounds though; it is pretty much no action and mostly tons of title cards and letters. This is a difficult film to totally dislike with its fantastic sets and Fairbanks really embracing his character, but the choice to focus so heavily Robin Hood before becoming a vigilante backfires.
