This would go on the back of a VolkswagenShow
1. Madame Dubarry (1919)
2. Er is wieder da / Look Who's Back (2015)
3. Kings of Kallstadt (2014)
4. Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927)

I guess one thing I discovered with this one is that I really like those city-documentary films. I thought this was beautiful - you really got a general feel for the city, and I thought a lot of the mechanical shots were stunning. The movie was only enhanced by the score (which was not original - and I'd love to hear it with the original score). The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the vast throngs of people in some of the earlier scenes (Akt 2?). Otherwise, this was great - and an unanticipated addition to my favorites list.

While this fairytale film boasts positive messages, they are all pretty simple and obvious. The messages are also arguably contradictory since we are led to believe that the prince truly loves the princess here, but given her abrasive personality, the only aspect he could have fallen in love with was her looks. The film is worth a whirl though for its zany Technicolor sets that including glowing rocks and outlandish wild critters that range from giant goldfish to unicorns with blonde hair. Plus, the prince randomly transforms into a bear in the film's single biggest WTF moment.

2. Die Gebrüder Skladanowsky / A trick of light (Ger 95)

Film about some forgotten cinema pioneers (beaten out by Lumiere bros), made by Wim Wenders and his students. Part neo-silent film with voiceover, part documentary. Clearly the makers were enjoying themselves, the silent parts especially are quite funny. I could have done without the endless credits, though I understand the reason for them.

Offbeat as the plot (aliens with a music allergy invading Earth) might sound, the weirdness here is increased by the fact that it is a filmed opera stage performance, complete with garish lighting, amateurish alien costumes (see that red thing above) and theatrical performances. The music is great though and this is quite a pleasant film to listen to. The plot also taps into the importance of teaching music (and creative arts in general). And yet, it is hard to really embrace a film where the characters are absolutely petrified of aliens who never once appear menacing.

Hate to be nitpicking but maybe you would find it interesting regardless: German films rarely used Technicolor as they had their own things such as Agfacolor (used in this film) and later in East Germany ORWO color. Agfacolor often looks quite spectacular in a different way from technicolor in my opinion (zany is a good word) , while ORWO was... bleak.

I agree with your review, seems like it has a cult following for some reason though.. It surely is one of the weirder East German film.

I agree with your review, seems like it has a cult following for some reason though.. It surely is one of the weirder East German film.
Thanks for the correction. I just did a Google Search for ORWO colour and I think I see what you mean. The colours seem more washed out, less vibrant/intense - or at least in the images that cropped up in my search.

Regarding the cult following, I read a few Letterboxd comments after watching the film and it seems that it was screened on television in the UK a few decades ago, but in black and white, which had a traumatising effect on some girls with dark hair since the princess comments on how ugly she is when hair changes from blonde to dark green (or black in B&W). What's weird, or maybe it's just me, but I actually thought she looked more attractive with green hair, pale skin and a short nose than she did before her transformation. Other Letterboxd comments I read also mentioned becoming afraid of evil dwarfs after watching the film. I guess maybe it's not the best film to show an impressionable child and the film's reputation seems to have built up from viewers deeming it an unintentionally scary film for kids.

Anyway, between this and the Globolinks movie, I think I've had my fair share of weird German kids movies for this Challenge.

This British-German co-production was Alfred Hitchcock's first feature film and with a plot that involves murder, madness and duplicity many have tried to lump it with Hitch's signature pieces over the years. Alas, such themes are only ever side issues, and while there is some technical finesse with underwater shots, dissolve special effects, the occasional panning shot and an in/out of focus bit, such highs are few and far between. The performances are nothing to write home about either, but the costumes are quite dazzling at least.

3. Kohlhiesel's Töchter (aka. Kohlhiesel's Daughters)(Lubitsch, 1920). Oh, Lubitsch is getting into his stride here, with a lighthearted comedy starring Henny Porten in a double role as two very different sisters and Emil Jannings as the oaf who wants to marry the younger, prettier and nicer daughter but has to somehow get someone to marry the older, much cruder one.

1. Das Fidele Gefangnis (aka. The Merry Jail)(Lubitsch, 1917)
2. Meyer Aus Berlin (aka. Meyer from Berlin)(Lubitsch, 1919)
3. Kohlhiesel's Töchter (aka. Kohlhiesel's Daughters)(Lubitsch, 1920)
Personal film goals for 2019.

Along similar lines to Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron, it is interesting to see the German side of fighting World War II here with characters who are very human beneath their Nazi loyalties - and memorable moments include one scared soldier literally defecating in his pants. The film lacks, however, the strong characters and performances of the Peckinpah film. The plot is also extremely episodic and plays out as a more a series of highlights. An appropriately rousing music score and excellently scouted locations ensure that the film has impact though.
