There are noticeable shades of the Shaws' prior 36th Chamber of Shaolin here as a young man goes to a monastery to refine his kung fu skills, but since he demonstrates amazing skills from early on, the film never has the superb character growth and progression of 36th Chamber. The choreography though is as spectacular as ever with some particularly impressive pole work. In a refreshing change of pace, one of the sisters holds her own well in several kung fu battles too. The wolf-fighting philosophy is also pretty neat.

41. The World in His Arms (1952)

Image

Gregory Peck plays a seal hunter here whose plans to buy Alaska (!) in the 1850s are disrupted by a romantic fling. The lady in question is a Russian countess - something she keeps secret in a plot turn similar to Peck's Roman Holiday of the subsequent year. None of the magic of the Wyler/Trumbo film is to be found here though. In fact, the romance takes a back-seat for a large chunk as Peck travels treacherous seas (against unconvincing weather special effects), gets into schooner races, and as his colleagues wax poetic about seal hunting.

7. John Paul Jones (John Farrow, 1959)
8. Ant-Man (Peyton Reed, 2015)
9. Wong Fei Hung / Once Upon a Time in China (Hark Tsui, 1991)

11. The Wild Geese (Andrew V. McLaglen, 1978)
12. Mission: Impossible II (John Woo, 2000)
13. Fei ying gai wok / Operation Condor (Jackie Chan, 1991)
14. Stander (Bronwen Hughes, 2003)
15. Incredibles 2 (Brad Bird, 2018) (cinema)
16. Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (Michael Anderson, 1975)
17. Black Eagle (Eric Karson, 1988)

The principal disadvantages to doing writeups for everything, and not being able (or willing?) to do them every day or two are that 1) you end up with a backlog that becomes harder to finish in a timely manner and you work on it for hours and 2) some of the films start to decay quite severely in memory. Especially the films that are the last of the day, which you watch after a couple of beers, and which aren't very good to begin with. Which brings me to this piece of crap, the earliest "major" Jean-Claude Van Damme film I hadn't seen, and I think the first film starring Sho Kosugi that I've watched. SK was a big name in martial-arts films when I was working in video stores in the late 80 - early 90s, probably the only then-current Asian name besides Jackie Chan that most customers knew, but unlike Chan, Bruce Lee or Jet Li his name hasn't really remained significant, mostly because his films apparently suck for the most part. And if this is any indication, that reputation might be deserved, because this is utter trip throughout, only worth seeing for the big climactic fight between our hero, US agent Kosugi, and our bad guy, Russian JCVD. There is a kind of interesting little romantic element between JC and another agent that threatens for a moment to make this interesting, but it never goes anywhere. This also might have been better in a good quality widescreen version, where the Malta location work would have shown off better, but it's so routine and poorly acted and put together that I doubt I will ever bother seeking such an animal out if it exists.

18. Code of Silence (Andrew Davis, 1985) (re-watch)

Speaking of poor actors and good location work, we have here what is undoubtedly Chuck Norris' finest cinematic moment, in the only really good movie he was ever in - at least as a star, Way of the Dragon is probably better - and it's due in good part to Chicago native Davis' inventive, almost exhaustive use of every kind of Chicago neighborhood and downtown location he could get his camera on, an excellent use of city actors (including John Mahoney and Dennis Farina) in smaller roles to lend verisimilitude to the setting, a pretty good screenplay (with no apparent input from Norris' frequent collaborate, his no-talent brother Aaron) and really terrific action set-pieces and stunts, especially the opening drug-bust-gone wrong and the long foot chase that includes a real fight on top of moving elevated train and dives into the Chicago River. It's true that Norris' cop character has no particular personality outside of being a Dirty Harry-type "I do it my own way" guy, but the local flavor, the tightness of the action, and the acting in general all keep this going well, until the rather weak and formulaic ending. Still all in all it's the only Norris film worth re-watching more than once IMO, apart perhaps from Invasion USA - but that works for completely different reasons.

19. Foo gwai lit che / Millionaire's Express / Shanghai Express (Sammo Hung, 1986)

Kind of an all-star martial-arts-western-comedy flick, the kind of thing that Hong Kong does so well and Hollywood only manages to do passably on occasion, this starts out rather confusingly with lots of plots and characters that don't seem to be really related at first, eventually all converging as groups of good guys and bad guys that want to save or destroy a small town, and get their hands on a prized ancient map in ca 1930s China. I think. The cast includes writer-directer Hung of course, as the central and most ethically opaque character, and among others Biao Yuen (adversary to Hung at first, later...??), Rosamund Kwan, Kenny Bee, Eric Tsang and Cynthia Rothrock who is always a pleasure to see when she's in something that's halfway decent. Overall it's rather a mess and not all the humor works for me, but the huge ending fight sequence is awesome and it's plenty of fun warts and all.

20. Mission: Impossible III (J.J. Abrams, 2006) (re-watch)

The last of the MI films that I had already seen, and the one that stayed essentially the same as my memory of it - the first I liked a little less on this current cycling through of the series, the second a little more. This was mediocre 12 years ago and I don't see any reason to feel differently now; I continue to generally be less than impressed by Abrams' particular brand of flashiness, which I have to say is increasingly reminding me of Michael Bay - not in the editing, which isn't nearly as fast, but in the lighting and continuous movement which often gets quite tiresome in indoor acting sequences where it's nearly impossible to see what's actually happening. And Abrams' directing of actors is less than wonderful, Philip Seymour Hoffman was never more wasted in a role than here in the Totally Amoral Evil Vicious Life-Hating Bad Guy du jour, and reasonably interesting folks like Michelle Monaghan and Billy Crudup leave little impression either. And (not Abrams fault, this part) the whole Cruise and his small team against the IMF/government/world theme is starting to get pretty stale here - and how do they always manage to have the resources to break into impossible buildings, travel anywhere in the world, get exotic weapons and electronic gear when they're on the run from the US government all the time? Not that one expects realism in these kinds of things but James Bond films are rarely so silly, and at least a tiny veneer of reality might be helpful in keeping us caring about shit.

21. Dip bi / The Butterfly Murders (Hark Tsui, 1979)

Another strange mixture of genres, a horror-wuxia I guess you could call it, seemingly set in a kind of alternate universe dominated by "the Martial World" and various guilds/groups/factions therein which all seem to have names like Red Squad or Green Shadow, there are all kinds of numbers and dates thrown around with abandon - "on the 10th month of the Shing Period, on the 13th day, the forces of the Purple Dragon and his 72 generals encountered the Black Riders" - that sort of thing - and it's all very confusing at first until you realize about a third of the way through that none of it matters much, once we enter the big fortress where most of the martial arts action takes place, and the main drama becomes the figuring out of who or what is making butterflies into killer death machines! Yep, the title actually describes the action. It's all lots of fun, if you like the director's signature style of ridiculous fights in three-dimensional indoor spaces (caves at the climax of this film for instance) and a plot that is needlessly complicated and characters that all seem to have secrets of honor and tragedy. This is his first film and it's certainly rough and a bit cheap looking but it bears all of his marks, for better or worse; mostly for better IMO.

22. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Brad Bird, 2011)

Ho-hum. A little better than the third entry IMO, mostly because the series apparently settles on the idea of actually having a team work together throughout the pic now, something that carries into the next film. You know, like the TV series. I don't know if it was Cruise's ego or what, but he dominated the earlier films to the point where you sometimes wonder if he needs anybody - if he is in fact just and American James Bond. Here we have a group of folks who each have some meaningful abilities and talents and who seem to bail each other out enough that you can't imagine the Cruiser doing it alone anymore. Good. The bad is that as usual virtually nothing makes any real-world sense, and as usual our group (which includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg for needed comic relief, and Paula Patton, as well as a cameo by the only series regular besides Cruise, Ving Rhames) manages to always have all the crazy sophisticated equipment they need despite as usual being on the run from their own government. I guess when it boils down to it, one's interest in this series is going to be predicated on how much one likes the current way of doing big-budget American action set-pieces, and maybe on one's appreciation for the actors - I'm always pleased to see Lea Seydoux, even in a thankless role as an assassin who gets just a couple of scenes. Meh.

23. Air Force (Howard Hawks, 1943)

I would have questioned the designation of "action" for this film up until about the 80-90 minute point of it's 2 hours, but then we have a pretty long and amazing well done (for 1943 - heck, probably for any time in the 40s or 50s) series of bombing missions to finish up this tribute to the Army Air Force, filmed just months after Pearl Harbor, and the "action" genre seemed to fit after all. OK first off, it's a Howard Hawks film, so it's a bunch of male camaraderie at the heart of things - you'd think he would have made more war films than he did, because here it actually seems quite realistic, the bonding that would go on with the crew of a bomber, tight quarters and fear of death and all. Second, it's a propaganda film, and though we don't have very much as far as depictions of the Japanese - some soldiers getting cut down as they attack our Red-Blooded American Heroes on a landing strip, some Admirals and Captains getting blown up on ships - but the dialogue is occasionally fairly racist, and the depictions of sabotage on Pearl are apparently mostly or all made up to make the enemy look even worse. That said, it's a really well put together and exciting war-as-adventure film and if you can appreciate such a thing, this is as good as any WWII aviation film I've seen, and getting back to the effects - man are they good. There are a few shots that are pretty obvious in being stock footage, but for the most part the stock, miniature and other effects blend together really seamlessly. All in all, while not one of Hawks' best films, deserving of a bit more attention I think.

24. Hung fan qui / Rumble in the Bronx (Stanley Tong, 1995)

I spent a good half an hour uselessly trying to find a copy of the longer Hong Kong cut of this, and finally came to the conclusion that it's only available in a really, really crappy print with poor English subtitles burnt in along with the Chinese. Of course I had the pristine shorter English-friendly cut out from the library but the things we do for purity...anyway, it was hardly worth it and I doubt the longer version is going to improve a mediocrity like this too much. This suffers the same basic problems that some other JC vehicles of the period do - endlessly extended action sequences, with the hovercraft finale here seeming to last for hours, and comedy that often undermines the relatively serious plots; in this case we have a street gang that is fucking around with Anita Mui's grocery store in the Bronx (really Vancouver but hey who would know that there aren't any mountains visible from NYC?) and her relative Jackie just happens to be in town to help. OK that's typical fun and games but then it turns out the REAL bad guys are a mob (white guys so we know they're bad news) who waste several people in pursuit of a bunch of diamonds that...oh forget it. The apparently gritty crime elements, the maudlin boy-in-wheelchair subplot, and the broad comedy just don't all got together that well, and it's pretty forgettable all round apart from some of the earlier and middle action scenes

25. Wong Fei Hung II: Nam yee tung chi keung / Once Upon a Time in China II (Hark Tsui, 1992)

Pretty nearly as much fun as the first entry, this one has Jet Li again as our hero Wong Fei Hung, with love interest (maybe) Auntie 13 (Rosamund Kwan) and disciple/gopher Foon (Siu Chung Mok) travelling to Canton in 1895 and getting involved in a battle against the fanatical racial/nationalist/religious cult The White Lotus Society which wants to drive out or exterminate all Europeans from China, and which is of course led by an incredible martial artist (Xin Xin Xiong). Also on hand is Donnie Yen as the leader of the local militia - who also is of course an incredible martial artist - and Tielin Zhang as Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, like Wong Fei Hung a real historical personage and the father of the Chinese Republic. There is some development in the Auntie/Wong romance, and Wong starts to teach Auntie some fighting techniques, but on the whole like the first film this really stands alone. It's interesting that in the first film the foreigners were essentially the villains, and here it's those who would drive the foreigners out who have become the bad guys. I guess I'll have to see how it develops in the next film(s).

26. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Christopher McQuarrie, 2015)

The good news - the very good news - is that I didn't violently hate this film like I hated the other McQuarrie film I've seen, The Way of the Gun. The bad news is it's just another typical silly entry in this series, one I can barely remember less than 48 hours after watching it. The team from the previous film is back minus Paula Patton, and we add Rebecca Ferguson as a new ally - OR IS SHE? Sean Harris of the very low whispery-whiny-raspy voice is on hand as the supervillain who has recruited ex-agents from all the powers to...start WWIII and bring about a new world order. Where have I seen that before? The Spy Who Loved Me and Under Siege come to mind without any effort and I'm sure there are dozens more. As usual the team is on the outs with it's own government (Alec Baldwin as the titular boss in charge) and as usual they somehow still manage to access every car, weapon, travel to anywhere they need to go, those crazy totally real masks they always have, etc, despite being hunted by the CIA. As usual, meh.

27. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Fran Rubel Kuzui, 1992) (3rd viewing)

I suspect I'm in a fairly small minority of fans of the TV series who don't much mind the original film - in fact, I like it more each time I see it, though it will probably never come up the the level of the top 3/4 of the TV episodes. But for the first half or even 2/3 of the film, it's got most of the same virtues of the show, and not a heck of a lot of flaws beyond the relatively flat and uninspired direction. Much of Whedon's ability as a writer and developer of characters comes through, and Kristy Swanson is a pretty decent Buffy, certainly looking more capable of beating the crap out of your typical male vampire than the much more petite Sarah Michell Gellar. And the neon and clothing and LA-area locations put one in mind of seminal 80s teen flicks like Valley Girl, which is to the good. But the silliness eventually does threaten to overwhelm, mostly in the form of the two useless head vampires, Rutger Hauer and Paul Reubens, not so much miscast as mis-directed or mis-used. The latter's infamous scene gets well-deserved scorn but Hauer doesn't perform any better - having comical villains can work, having farcical, silly villains really doesn't do the trick. Still, up until the last act, this really does give the sense of what the TV show would become in it's first couple of seasons, and even Luke Perry is kind of charming in his proto-Zander role.

12. Jurassic World 2 - 2

The fuck was I thinking. This is what happens when you're bored with nothing to do and have seen every other flick at the moviehouse down the street.

The last hour of this film was one of the worst hours of theatre-going I have ever experienced. One hundred decibels of unending, screeching Groundhog Day dino bullshit. Every scene is a replication of the last: People doing a thing, a dinosaur shows up, people try to hide, people die. How stupid must your audience be to watch this without suffering and losing at least a little self-respect?

It's not as bad as the last one, but this is still some agonizing cinema.

I have tripled my points today!
previously on Sunday Action TheaterShow
1. Men in War - 1957 - Anthony Mann 7/10
2. Shao Lin da peng da shi (Return to the 36th Chamber) - 1980 - Chia-Liang Liu 6/10
Not as good as the first one, and not as serious, either. This one leans much more heavily on the comic elements. There is surprisingly little in the way of fight scenes until late in the movie, where --I am not making this up -- the protagonist's "scaffolding" kung fu style goes up against the villain's "bench" style.

3. A Night to Remember - 1958 - Roy Ward Baker 8/10
A much more consistent and gripping take on the Titanic disaster than James Cameron's multi-Oscar winning and ostentatiously big-budget king of the world special effects bonanza. Despite having a much smaller relative budget, this movie's effects were more than adequate. In particular, the attention to detail in the sound design is fantastic. I haven't seen the 90's movie for some years now, but many scenes appear to have been shot-for-shot remakes from this 1958 movie. This version has the benefit of not being bogged down by a ham-fisted fictional romance that causes a sort of cognitive dissonance with the disaster portion of the narrative. Instead, this one is invested fully with the personal stories around the disaster and its effects on the passengers as a recreation of events as described in the book of the same name by Walter Lord. As such it feels like a more even-handed treatment of the subject matter.

35. The Delta Force (1986)

Chuck Norris, renowned martial artist, does zero martial arts work and maintains a single expression through the entire film. I exaggerate (slightly), but that's a reasonable way to describe a "meh" film.

36. Death Proof (2007)

The premise of this looked kinda bad, and after about 5 minutes, I was ready to hate it. But I thought it was great. It captured the feel of those 70s exploitation films perfectly - the mood, the dialogue, the film damage, etc. all came together to set the stage for some horrific and clever action.

37. Rush (2013)

I think I partially disagree with sol on this one - for me, the last 45 minutes, if anything, were a step back. I thought the first 60-75 minutes did a great job of setting up not only the individual characters and their motivations, but also the rivalry between the two. I knew nothing of the story (and don't care about the sport), so getting that deep look into the two main characters was invaluable, and set up the rest of the film. And the final 45 minutes or so were good. Nice tension and sports story, but nothing all that special. Overall, I enjoyed the film. And Chris Hemsworth pisses me off, because no human being should be that attractive and charming.

This HK film features some breathtaking swordplay and hand-to-hand combat with the best fight being between the title character and the other major female character - a greedy princess played with gusto by a perfectly sinister (yet incredibly pretty) Shirley Huang. As a narrative though, the film does not really stack up. Everyone is after the protagonist because she has a bunch of pearls, but as they are stolen, she becomes a rather difficult character to like.

It is always a little obvious that Stewart will remain honorable throughout, but Arthur Kennedy provides a fine turn as the other former outlaw here with a constant uncertainty as to how he is going to sway. A particularly potent line of dialogue comes as Kennedy observes that most people "won't let you change", try as you might. Add to this fascinating dynamic (being unable to erase one's past) a detailed insight into the risks and difficulties of early settlement and this is an interesting film all round.

35. The Delta Force (1986)

Chuck Norris, renowned martial artist, does zero martial arts work and maintains a single expression through the entire film. I exaggerate (slightly), but that's a reasonable way to describe a "meh" film.

So then... Delta Farce? ;)
BTW, have you seen Planet Terror yet? (in addition to Death Proof, which I agree was better than initial expectations)

No, unfortunately, though that's on my list. The DVD I got from the library only had Death Proof. But I've requested it, so hopefully soon...

I recommend just watching the Grindhouse film end to end with both in it. The fake trailers and the beginning and in the middle are the best parts.

Agreed, when I saw it the whole shebang was just called Grindhouse, and the trailers were fantastic. They even became their own movies! Hobo with a Shotgun was hilarious.

The animated monsters doesn't look like their part of this world. So they probably should have gone with a 100% animated movie rather than this that is lacking in every regard. But as it is for kids, they probably don't care.

22. Edge of darkness (43)
I wasn't sure this would count, but the last half hour is pretty nonstop action, so.
Errol Flynn as leader of the Resistance in a Norwegian coastal town. A couple of the Germans have weak German accents, but most speak American, as do the Norwegians and Brits. For a WWII-era US war movie it's engrossing enough. The local cannery is run by the local quisling, so I guess it doesn't can radio parts for the Resistance as my father-in-law's cannery did.

82. Hardcore Henry (2015)
Super fun non-stop crazy sci-fi action flick entirely in first person. The entire movie mimics the progression of a video game. Destined to be a cult classic.

83. Lung hing foo dai (1986) a.k.a. Armour of God
Like its sequel Operation Condor, it's Jackie Chan in a James Bond/Indiana Jones role. Not one of his best but does have a couple of great sequences, especially the one at the end.

84. Rush Hour 2 (2001)
More of the same... Chris Tucker is damn near unbearable and relentlessly unfunny. Jackie doesn't showcase his stuntwork as much as in other movies. Just feels really half baked overall.

85. The Wings of Eagles (1957)
A solid movie featuring John Wayne playing a more well-rounded character than his usual "John Wayne" role.

86. Ming jian (1980) a.k.a. The Sword
Nothing really remarkable but does have some really nice swordplay sequences.

87. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny (2015)
Hackneyed cash-in that while featuring the same acrobatic action of the original courtesy of now director Yuen Woo-Ping, the plot and dialogue are much worse, resulting in an inferior, mediocre sequel.

88. Street Knight (1993)
Evil guy pits too gangs against each other with Jeff Speakman in the middle. Pretty meh. Speakman just has no personality to be a lead.
