9: Dynamite Fighters (1987) HK. 9.

Lighting the fuse in the era when all the guys were firing with all guns blazing, director David Chung enthusiastic attitude towards doing a different type of Action flick sparkles across the swift run-time. Lassoing into the 1930’s with a war against imperialist Japan, Chung makes the action scenes stand out by putting modern fire power aside for historical weapons, whose weight in gun fights and sword play gives the fights a heaviness, neatly balanced by a rip-roaring Adventure atmosphere of slow-motion Kung-Fu moves and colourful explosions.

Fighting into the small village to save it from the boo-hiss Japanese baddies, the screenplay by Kan-Cheung Tsang perfectly compliments Chung style with the serial like mix of spies, break-neck action set-pieces,goofy comedy spots, and lead hero Ming-Ming given quiet moments that allow her family life to be seen, before Tsang throws them all into the next danger on the adventure. Charging into battle, the eye-catching Michelle Yeoh gives an extremely charismatic performance as Ming-Ming. Kicking the action with a graceful ease, Yeoh brings a real sense of excitement to Ming-Ming diving into a dangerous adventure, and lighting the fuse of the dynamite fighters.

With black magic, curses, twin brothers from prior lives, disemboweled crocodiles and immortality in the mix, as a narrative The Boxer's Omen chews off more than it can swallow. Taken as an audiovisual assault on the senses though, it is a magnificent achievement. The special effects are wildly inventive with lots of nifty practical effects as skin bubbles and animal skeletons come to life, as well as cool ostentatious effects involving floating gold symbols, and everything culminates in a deliciously insane battle.

45. 'Xin nü xing' / 'New Women' / 1935, Chusheng Cai / 8/10 / China
46. 'Dongfang hong' / 'The East is Red' / 1965, Ping Wang / 7/10 / China
47. 'Bu cheng wen ti de wen ti' / 'Mr. No Problem' / 2016, Feng Mei / 8.5/10 / China
48. 'Tomorrow is Another Day' / 2017, Tai-lee Chan / 6.5 or 7/10 / Hong Kong

Sharing Derek Elley's informative and wonderfully interesting review of Mei Feng's captivatingly nuanced, wryly ironic and beautifully acted comedy of manners: http://sino-cinema.com/2016/10/29/review-mr-no-problem/. Set in 1942 on a failing countryside farm in war-affected China, the machinations and conflicts of outlook are handled with poise and restraint and the static camera captures the intricacies and revealing minutiae of interaction in shared spaces. Elegant performances across the board but centre stage is comedian Fan Wei as the personable yet duplicitous and quietly scheming farm manager attempting to hold on to his position. A constantly fascinating and rewarding film of little details and human warmth and ruthlessness and a pretty great and distinctive first feature from the director.

17. Breaking News (2004) Hong Kong REVISION

Image

More relevant than ever 14 years on with the advent of social media, this Johnnie To movie looks at the power of images to sway public perception as both a local police force and a group of criminals film their sides of a hostage situation and upload their footage. Kelly Chen is excellent as the constantly cool young superintendent in charge of the mission. It was disappointing on revision to realise just how little screen time she has, but this generally stacks up well upon rewatch.

49. 'Ye mei gui' / 'Wild Rose' / 1932, Yu Sun / 8.5/10 / China
50. 'Liu san jie' / 'Third Sister Liu' / 1960, Su Li / 9.5/10 / China
51. 'Wong Fei Hung' / 'Once Upon a Time in China' / 1991, Hark Tsui / 7.5 or 8/10 / Hong Kong
52. 'Jian yu' / 'Reign of Assassins' / 2010, Chao-Bin Su, John Woo / 8/10 / China / Taiwan / Hong Kong

Li Su's 'Third Sister Liu' brings the theme of conflict between landlord and singing peasants colourfully and vibrantly to life. The traditional songs are quite lovely and take centre stage as charming 17-year-old Huang Wan-qiu breaks into song at the drop of a hat. A melodious folk tale of the Zhuang people of Guangxi and a film full of charm, cultural resistance and the joys of song. https://chinablog.cc/the-folk-song-is-j ... u-san-jie/

All FTV's unless stated:

10: Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991) 9. HK

Image

Becoming the first flick to be given a CAT III rating for violence in Hong Kong,co-writer/(with Masahiko Takajo) director Ngai Choi Lam & cinematographer Hoi-Man Mak wear it with pride, by pounding the screen with an endless splatter parade. Smartly deciding to point the action and gore in an animated Grindhouse direction (the film ended up not doing well in HK) Lam gives everything a handmade quality with excellent the rubbery practical effects and gallons of fake blood vividly bursting open in slo-mo Kung-fu fights.

Pulled from Tetsuya Saruwatari’s Manga/ Comic-Book, Lam and Takajo adaptation is given satirical jabs by the baddies being The Gang of Four, (changed to The Four Heavenly Kings in the Asia cut)and Riki-Oh trying to re-gain freedom from the prison walls The Gang of Four have placed round him. Hitting a konck-out, gore-drenched punch from the opening, the writers cast a rich, pulp atmosphere via the minimalist back-story of Riki-Oh being filled in mid-battle,with each fight brilliantly building up like a Comic-Book run,as Riki-Oh discovers new powers after each victory. Only 18 at the time,Siu-Wong Fan gives a blistering performance which highlights the never say die attitude in Riki-Oh’s story.

53. 'Bian zou bian chang' / 'Life on a String' / 1991, Kaige Chen / 10/10 / China / Germany / UK
54. 'Guo nian hui jia' / 'Seventeen Years' / 1999, Yuan Zhang / 8.5/10 / Italy / China
55. '234 Shuo ai ni' / 'Another Woman' / 2015, Wei-Chen Chang / 5/10 / Taiwan
56. 'Fu zi qing' / 'River's Edge' / 2017, Wang Chao / 9/10 / China

Auteur Wang Chao's latest film is one of tranquility and turmoil, acceptance of loss, and rural life under strain. An odyssey of understanding and empathy for a city father discovering a deceased and under-known to him son and the village and people known to him prior to his drowning. 'River's Edge' offers contemplation and unhurried discovery, awakening and awareness. A film of exquisite quiet humanity and connection. The only jarring notes are one or two message moments of sudden reference to the problems of drugs and Aids but those are minute quibbles for a film of such meditative beauty and simple profundity. The melancholia that suffuses Chao's look at life by the river and its quaint traditions has the air of an elegy for rural existence imperiled amid the encroaching march of modernity. https://www.easternkicks.com/reviews/rivers-edge

All FTV's unless stated:

Repeat viewing:11: The Killer (this time the extended Asia cut) (1989) 10. HK

12: Fatal Termination (1990) 10. HK.

Image

Swarming round the (sadly un-credited) dark synch score, director Yeung-Wah Kam attacks with a deeply cynical, nihilistic atmosphere, tinted in blue for the burning of the thin blue line. Cracking open the double dealing between the cops and the criminals, Yam holds firm in a blistering take no prisoners approach, reeling in thugs and children caught between shoot-outs in lightning-fast whip-pans, whipped up by burning rubber car chases and stylish shots revealing the contents of brown envelopes.

Rubbed against the grime on the street shown by Kam, the screenplay by Chi-Ming Pang superbly takes aim at all sides, stripping the cops and thugs of heroics to show them at their most bare, rogue form. Netting in Jimmy’s family, Pang powers the explosive action on the down and dirty desire for revenge of Jimmy and Moon. Screeching with fury,Moon Lee gives a simmering performance as Moon, whilst Simon Yam gives Jimmy the hard-nose of ambiguity and the fantastic Phillip Ko hisses as Ko Mok-Fu unveils his fatal termination.

11. Wong Fei Hung II: Nam yee tung chi keung / Once Upon a Time in China II (Hark Tsui, 1992)
3 Dragon Inns

12. Long men kezhan / Dragon Inn (King Hu, 1967)

My second King Hu, after the 1966 Da zui xia, a Shaw Brothers production and looking like their other films from the era, though certainly superior. This, his first film after moving to Taiwan, is a different kettle of fish, with lots of location work and a sense of visual and perhaps to a certain extent narrative freedom that would never fly at Shaw. The way Hu films landscapes... Anthony Mann comes to mind, and that's as high a complement as I can give. And the "classical" editing also strikes me as reminiscent of American classic cinema, in this case John Ford. Everything seems just so, the movement between action, stillness and dialogue is so well judged. As to the story, it's familiar enough, with a couple of kids sent to the frontier after their father has been murdered by the area warlord, only to have the warlord's men come after them, and a motley band assembles to defend them. The way the group comes together seems both random and fate-appointed, and the characterizations though not deep are nicely drawn; I particularly liked the contrast between the rather serious Lingfeng Shangguan, whose art is both graceful, perfectly timed and strong, and Chun Shih, a rather comical figure here but almost Man With No Name-like in his casual deadliness - and the hints of romance between the two are delicious and not at all overdone. The fight sequences and wire-work are a bit primitive I suppose but all in all it's exciting enough and the battles around the inn and the final conflict are perfect in scale and length.

13. Sun lung moon hak chan / New Dragon Gate Inn (Raymond Lee and (uncredited) Siu-Tung Ching/Hark Tsui, 1992)

Lee is the only credited director on this very, very loose remake, and I'm not really familiar enough with his work or that of Siu-Tun Ching, who also co-produced, but this has the mark of co-director/co-writer/co-producer Tsui all over it, full of crazy whip-speed indoor combats, wire-work, jumps, spins, an even stronger emphasis on the female characters (the original only had one main female role), played in this case by the magnificent Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin. It's an all-star affair, with Tony Ka Fei Leung as the main good guy and Donnie Yen as the main antagonist, and it probably cost a fair bit of money by HK standards, but on the whole it falls a little flat I think. Oh, I do love parts, particularly my dream girl Maggie as a sort of comic femme fatale, and the last fight sequence is totally outlandish, but much of the action and plot in the middle third are fairly incomprehensible and I gave up really caring what was going on even while still enjoying the crazy action. A better video copy probably would have helped, it's a shame so much Hong Kong cinema is hard to find in top-notch condition.

14. Bu san / Goodbye Dragon Inn (Ming-liang Tsai, 2003)

I saw several of Tsai's early films when they got released in the 90s, but haven't really kept up with him. Not sure why; I've liked everything, and his style and concerns always interest me, but I guess I have to be in the mood, and I'm not entirely sure I was in the right space for this one, though I did like it quite a bit anyway. Just over 80 minutes of a small group of folks - movie projectionist, ticket saleswoman/janitor, and a few patrons - sitting through, talking through, trying to get sex during a showing of the 1967 Dragon Inn, and leaving us the viewer to ponder the nature of the cinema experience in the post-communal age we have entered - when even one of the stars of the King Hu film, now grown old and talking to his costar in the lobby, laments that nobody goes to the movies anymore. I love big, echoey, lonely industrial and commercial interiors, so a film set in a big movie theater that's nearly empty has an automatic appeal, but ultimately I'm not sure what to make of this beyond the obvious nostalgia and reverie elements. Still very much worth seeing and an interesting contrast after the two action-packed films that provide it's name.

music, then more fighting

15. Ye mei gui zhi lian / The Wild, Wild Rose (Tian-Lin Wang, 1960)

Carmen comes to Hong Kong in the form of a noirish nightclub-set rendition in smoky black and white, beautifully shot and put together well enough that it would be a memorable version of the story... but then we have Grace Chang's terawatt performance in the central role, which kicks this up to masterpiece level. Seductive and slinky and bitchy yet ultimately sympathetic, all the things a Carmen needs to be, and singing a half-dozen songs taken from various operas but given contemporary Chinese lyrics, she dominates this film on a level I don't recall seeing for quite a while, absolutely riveting. The melodramatic tones of the story can seem a little much - the cold-hearted bitch that Chang's Deng Sijia, a nightclub singer and maneater, seems to be are undercut by her selfless care for her coworker and ultimately the loser she comes to love - but Chang lives this part and never feels less that wholly convincing. Just great and easily the best film I've seen for this challenge so far.

16. Xia nü / A Touch of Zen (King Hu, 1971)

I won't call it a disappointment exactly, but I'm afraid that on one viewing this didn't live up to it's lofty reputation (or number of Official Toplists) for me. Chun Shih returns as the central character in another film set in the medieval era involving soldiers from the Eastern Chamber after a young girl...but there the similarities to the earlier Long men kezhan pretty much end. Shih isn't a warrior, and the story ends up being a lot more complex and rather weird and even perhaps abstract in the final act, as Shih's intellectual-painter character falls for the warrior-woman he plans to protect, finds out that a couple of his buddies in the town are actually generals also protecting the woman (who doesn't need a lot of protection, naturally) and that a new friend isn't who he seems to be. Lots of action of course, all of it well done though it must be said that the night sequences are really hard to follow - Hu probably didn't have the money for really sophisticated lighting and the natural light just doesn't cut it always - and I never felt bored during the three hours, but the last 35-minute sequence which goes into new territory including a religious apotheosis of sorts just felt out of place to me. It's got a great fight sequence embedded so I'm glad it's there but what it all means in the context of the film as a whole is probably beyond me at this point. Perhaps the long Tony Rayns review on the disc will help out.

57. 'Man bo nu lang' / 'Mambo Girl' / 1957, Wen Yi / 8/10 / Hong Kong
58. 'Long men kezhan' / 'Dragon Inn' / 1967, King Hu / 9/10 / Taiwan / Hong Kong
59. 'Tian mai zhuan qi' / 'The Touch' / 2002, Peter Pau / 5/10 / China / Hong Kong / Taiwan / Japan
60. 'Wi-heom-han gyan-gye' / 'Dangerous Liaisons' / 2012, Jin-ho Hur / 7/10 / China / South Korea / Singapore

'Mambo Girl' is a college musical of cheerfulness and fun but with deep-seated issues of adoption and social stature lurking in the shadows. Grace Chang exudes energy and vivacity as the dancing and singing centre of attention. A tender look at familial love and the lively, playful interplay between Chang and Kitty Ting Hao, who plays her younger sister, is a delightful facet. The awareness of the sadder elements and the graceful exuberance of Chang in song and dance make this a touching, heartwarming and smile-inducing musical to remember fondly. http://www.brns.com/pages4/drama242.html

While the romantic tension between the leads here is unconvincing (we never see what she sees in him), their differing takes on demon hunting are curious as she favours brute force while he would rather quell the demons who are human souls at unrest. The film's best aspects though are Chow's penchant for perfectly timed comedy and creative CGI. There is a hilarious sequence in which an obedience spell goes wrong and the darkly comic opening scene is incredibly funny while still eerie and morbid.

And that's it for me. :pinch: Glad I managed to end off with a reasonably good film - and one that lets me boast that I have watched something from all three Chinas, even if HK massively dominated my viewings. Thanks for hosting, max!
