This HK film features some breathtaking swordplay and hand-to-hand combat with the best fight being between the title character and the other major female character - a greedy princess played with gusto by a perfectly sinister (yet incredibly pretty) Shirley Huang. As a narrative though, the film does not really stack up. Everyone is after the protagonist because she has a bunch of pearls, but as they are stolen, she becomes a rather difficult character to like.

Does anyone know anything about Dream of the Red Chamber (1987)? I found it on Youtube with English subtitles, but I don't know if it's cut or uncut (I couldn't find a list of episode runtimes).
I compared ep 3, ep4 and ep5 of 2 different versions:
english sub:

chinese sub:

For ep3, the english subs one was about 10min longer than another, but it jumped back to the beginning of the ep after 35min.
Same as ep 4 and 5.

When you see the screen frozen for a few seconds, or yellow words in the middle of screen during the ep, or don't feel it's the right ep, maybe it's time to jump to next one. This usually happened 10 - 15min away from the end of an ep.

73- 74. Story of Yanxi Palace ep 7, ep8(2018, China)

I really hope people could carry their name tags all the time in Red Chamber. A lot of girls really looked a like, and it made me really confused of who they were...

Just a heads-up for everyone, I have a rather busy next few days, so don't be alarmed if I haven't updated scores. I'll catch back up this weekend, at the latest.

35. 'Yu guang qu' / 'Song of the Fishermen' / 1934, Chusheng Cai / 7/10 / China
36. 'Wu duo Jinhua' / 'Five Golden Flowers' / 1959, Jiayi Wang / 7.5/10 / China
37. 'Liao zhai san ji zhi deng cao he shang' / 'Erotic Ghost Story III' / 1992, Kai-Ming Lai / 7.5 or 8/10 / Hong Kong

The best bits of 'Erotic Ghost Story III' are the set design and the dazzling, breathtaking sensuality of Pauline Chan. The love-making scenes are lensed with a spine-tingling sensitivity and unhurried beauty. The erotic elegance of the nipple-licking made me gasp! The set-up, based upon an olden ghost story of a young man who finds himself entering a mural to discover three sisters being detained by an evil lady demon, possesses a certain charm and artistry. The smutty humour and action of a Category III film is there to good effect (a wacky monk guide who appears out of a lamp shrinks himself to enter the demonic lady's body in a particularly fun reference to Princess Iron Fan). The flowing colour and movement of the final wire-enhanced showdown in the world behind the mural is pretty spectacular as well! Uneven as a film but wonderful fun and the erotic love-making scenes are quite exquisite.

You know, I would not have expected that level of praise for a film with that title, especially being the third one in a series... (D:)

Hehe. Well, I should say that I haven't seen either of the other two entries but just happened to read a few pieces that described this as possibly the best of the bunch. Decided to jump in at the tail end on the back of those words. And the screencaps of Pauline Chan looked super appealing as well! Interested to look into the other two at some point. Something about these low-budget Category III efforts seems to work for me!

Yes, but how does it compare to Backdoor Sluts 9?

Because Backdoor Sluts 9 makes Crotch Capers 3 look like Naughty Nurses 2, after all.

I think Huba was a white radish, so it has smooth skin. I'm not sure if it's also because of technical problems.
I personally didn't really like Mei Ren Yu...It made great success probably because Stephen Chow was the director...

EP 7 was my favorite so far. It's a great drama, but I need to pay a lot of attention on the lines and details.
It's more like a very long film than a tv show...

Finally getting on the scoreboard:

1. Dust in the Wind (Hou, 1986). I'm sorry, but this was another HHH dud for me. He's just too meandering for me in some movies. I liked City of Sadness and A Time to Live and a Time to Die, but didn't care for Puppetmaster. I feel like he's just asking too much of me as a viewer, testing my patience and power of concentration and not giving me enough in return, at least when he "fails" (and when he succeeds it's still at a steep "price"). Apparently very hit or miss for me.
Personal film goals for 2019.

06. Qiu Ju da guan si, by Zhang Yimou (1992) 7/10

Interesting and well-done, mostly for the light it sheds on life in a chinese village...

07. Za jia xiao zi, by Sammo Hung (1979) 5/10

Too much action, and it lacks inventivity. The humor is pretty lame as well. Still, Sammo is impressive in his moves.

38. 'Kong Fuzi' / 'Confucius' / 1940, Mu Fei / 7/10 / China
39. 'Miss Kicki' / 2009, Håkon Liu / 6/10 / Sweden / Taiwan
40. 'Jiao you' / 'Stray Dogs' / 2013, Ming-liang Tsai / 9/10 / Taiwan / France

I like how an MRQE reviewer describes 'Stray Dogs' thusly: ''Tsai's oblique approach to space and time renders Stray Dogs an often mysterious work whose tactile and sodden images investigate the emotional boundaries of privation and deep loneliness''. Haunting for the unstinting mundanity of its realism and the starkly poetic and profound focus on existences, disconnections and survivals amidst the modern cityscape of Taipei.

91. You Hua Hao Hao Shuo/Keep Cool (1997, China, Yimou Zhang)
This was a rewatch, can't stop laughing even it's the third time I was watching it. It's comedy and little bit cult. Yimou Zhang contributed the most entertaining part of the film, and I liked Jang Wen's performance. The background music used Beijing traditional Story Telling -- Jing Yun Da Gu.

I watched the first 20 minutes of Dream of the Red Chamber. The drama might be good, but the subtitles are not good. Why does CCTV (or whoever made the subtitles) feel the need to ruin dramas with their bad subtitles? I'm going to watch something else instead.

終劇Show
1. Shao Lin da peng da shi (Return to the 36th Chamber) - 1980 - Chia-Liang Liu 6/10
2. Saang gong kei bing (Long Arm of the Law) - 1984 - Johnny Mak 6/10
3. Kong shan ling yu (Raining in the Mountain) - 1979 - King Hu 5/10

4. Jing wu men (The Chinese Connection/Fist of Fury) - 1972 - Wei Lo 6/10
I see people commenting on IMDB and ICM that this is the best Bruce Lee film. I personally disagree with that assessment, but there are some bright spots in this one, like Bruce's psychedelic fist swirls when he's fighting the big Russian strongman, and his propensity for stupid cliche disguises that apparently nobody but the audience can spot from a mile away.

5. Tian xia di yi quan (Five Fingers of Death/King Boxer) - 1972 - Chang-hwa Jeong 7/10
Now I know where that siren sound effect in Kill Bill comes from. It's the "I'm about to use Iron Fist technique" sound. This movie was much more consistent than the Bruce Lee movie I watched right before it, even if the fight choreography was a bit more fantastical. It also surprised me that somehow I managed to randomly pick a double feature of kung fu movies, where the protagonist has to fight off evil Japanese guys bearing samurai swords with only his bare fists, incurring a superficial cut on his chest in the process. The evil Japanese thing is of course a bit of a stereotype in Chinese martial arts cinema for obvious reasons, but do they all get exactly the same cut on their chest?

2. Vive L'amour (Tsai, 1994). I really liked this one. While depicting loneliness and longing there was something about the situation that was absurd to such a degree that the movie didn't feel as hopeless and depressing as what's actually depicted. Impressive.

1. Dust in the Wind (Hou, 1986)
2. Vive L'amour (Tsai, 1994)
Personal film goals for 2019.

41. 'E lin' / 'Evil Neighbour' / 1933, Pengnian Ren / 6/10 / China
42. 'Wu Xun zhuan' / 'The Life of Wu Xun' / 1951, Yu Sun / 7/10 / China
43. 'Shuang xia' / 'The Deadly Duo' / 1971, Cheh Chang / 8/10 / Hong Kong
44. 'Balzac et la petite tailleuse chinoise' / 'Xiao cai feng' / 2002, Sijie Dai / 7.5/10 / France / China

'The Deadly Duo' from the Shaw Brothers is one of the most constantly action-filled films of its type I've seen. Imaginative, varied and gripping in confrontation after confrontation and a handsomely mounted production of this simple yet absorbing and, ultimately, rather moving rescue tale against the odds.

That's all, folks!

Is Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) eligible?

Or is it just imdb that has messed up the order of production countries?

imdb messed up. Priority is probably something like Paramount, Tom Cruise Productions, Bad Robot, Skydance, waaaay down the line Chinese production company. China shows up on a bunch of production company lists for recent blockbusters, as Hollywood tries to ingratiate themselves with China so as to attempt to make their films big hits in China (obviously biggest market in the world). In this case, the Chinese production company threw in some money so Zhang Jinchu could appear for 30 seconds. Not a significant contributor.
Iron Man 3 is the same way but worse, high profile Chinese partnership so Chinese actors could appear in the film, but then they cut them from every release but the Chinese edition! I remember that being the center of many pieces written on the blockbuster news sites and blogs back when the film was released.

8: Heroic Duo (2003) 7 HK

Looking back towards the Heroic Bloodshed sub-genre of Hong Kong’s last Action boom, the screenplay by Alan Yuen & Adrian Kwan welds the major bond/loyalty in blood theme of the genre with the slick complexities of the modern psychological Thriller. Peeling away in flashbacks at the final to what triggered the events, the writers give the movie a slippery, unpredictable atmosphere, lit by absurd slides into “mindhunting” and hypnotism, which are solidly held by Ken and Lai’s exchange in mind-games. Running the action scenes with an earthy grit from being filmed on streets, director Benny Chan and cinematographer give the movie a glossy appearance, with darting whip-pans hitting the targeted mind-games of the heroic duo.
