Damn! You beat me to getting the first Challenge post up... :P

Here is a link of DtC movies with the Action tag (i.e., Doubles): https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/doub ... e%3Aaction

Anyone know of a way or have the ability to find Chinese/HK/Taiwan movies on DtC?

I'm in but I don't know if I have many to watch. As it stands I've only watched 29 in the list.

As to the Action Challenge I will have it up within 24 hours.

Let's join all three this month.

For those interested, a list of films eligible for all three challenges. Only 8 titles. Please note that the list is visible by friends only, so don't hesitate to send me a request.

Hopefully Ill be able to get some done, but probably not many as I will (should) be busy this coming month with other things. If I get some movie watching going Ill probably focus on the ones that are on both the <500 checks and this one

I think 970. Yau doh lung fu bong (Throw Down) [2004] is also a triple. At least, it's listed as a martial arts film on wiki.

I begin the month on:

Image

242 checked -- which ranks me at #421.

I would like to make it up to 300 checked by the end of the month, but that might be a little too ambitious a goal. We'll see. :ermm:

Actually, I might even change my sig to include the DTC image since I will be working on it this month...

The first episode of this miniseries was absolutely riveting, looking at game theory beyond what was explored in A Beautiful Mind and proposing the notion that distrust among human beings leads to stability. The subsequent episodes did not quite interest me as much; there was quite a bit of repetition (something that may have been less obvious had I not watched the episodes back-to-back). Very good use of archive footage throughout either way - and excellent sourced music.

Don't blame me. :P I gave the film a zero when it was submitted as DTC candidate, but my vote got thrown out due to the adjustment for popularity.

1. The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom: F**k You, Buddy (2007) DTC #91
2. The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom: The Lonely Robot (2007) DTC #91
3. The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom: We Will Force You to Be Free (2007) DTC #91
4a. A Sense of History (1992) DTC #613 25min +
4b. Ménilmontant (1926) DTC #687 37min = 62mins

I was beginning to look at my watch and get restless during A Sense of History, so I paused it at around the 9 minute mark, got a drink and then almost choked on what I was drinking with the sudden macabre turn that the story takes at around this point (talking about him and his brother). The rest of the short film stays in similarly dark humour mode making this a lot more offbeat than I ever expected. Ménilmontant impressed me less. Oh, it was interesting to see a silent film of that length without a single title card (except for the word FIN) and yes, the editing was divine, but it is seldom a good sign when I need to read up about a film just in order to work what exactly transpired in the narrative.

Three of these are shorts that I had seen before, but before registering on iCM, maybe even before IMDb, so all of these were first time checks for me. The one new viewing was Tma/Svetlo/Tma, which of course I dug as a Svankmajer fan. Best parts were inserting the brain, tongue and teeth since Svankmajer is sort of at his strongest when he pushes the boundaries of conventional good taste. Quite an ending too. Of the three longtime revisions, the Wallace and Gromit one had me laughing out loud the most. The other two were amusing but not as innovative as my faded memories had pegged them as being.

Death and the Mother has some really cool images, Paradise has awesome images as well as enchanting music, and Le tempestaire captures some excellent nature weather and water effects. The crowning jewel of this bunch of shorts though is Ilha das Flores. It begins as a documentary about tomatoes with some hilarious narration as the narrator describes everything as if he is talking to an alien, explicitly stating the differences between humans and vegetables and casually talking about history tests making their way into pig diets (!). As the film progresses though, a more serious undertone arises and the film left me pondering about poverty, food supply and other issues in addition to all the laughs. Highly recommended.

1. They All Laughed (1981, Peter Bogdanovich) : they all laughed, but not me.
Don't blame me. :P I gave the film a zero when it was submitted as DTC candidate, but my vote got thrown out due to the adjustment for popularity.
I saw the film relatively recently. Thought it was 3/10, pretty bad.

You're very generous, allison. The film is among the 1% of films that I have given a 2/10 to. :yucky:

Lead actor Randolph Scott tries his best here in a role originally penned for John Wayne, but the film only comes alive in when Lee Marvin has centre stage as a taunting bandit. Marvin aside, this is a pretty melodramatic affair and Scott's interest in a young woman who reminds him of his dead wife is dull. The film has some uncomfortable things to say about gender roles too, and it is hard to root for Scott when he keeps harping on about how men have to protect women and that women should not work.
