Ridiculously specific question, but if you watch a film that counts for a challenge twice within the challenge month, can you count it twice?

For example, I watched "Marc Maron: Too Real" twice this month - once a couple days ago, and once again today with my wife. I've counted it already, but could I count it again?

Personally, I'm disinclined to count it, but since it actually happened to me, I thought I'd ask.

If it's still unofficial and rewatches are allowed, I don't see why not.

Such a question often came up on the IMDb Horror message boards during the October Challenge and the answer was always "no". I would say "no" too, though for the very specific reason of trying to protect the integrity of the challenge. The only reason I decided to allow rewatches in the first place was because many of us have films that we have not seen in so long that rewatching them is akin to viewing them for the first time. This month should be about discovering new Unofficial favourites and, to be honest, I already regret caving in and allowing comedy specials in the first place... but maybe I am unique in having oddles of unwatched Unofficial feature films in my collection.

The self-sufficient design of the titular building here is fascinating with interior shops and medical facilities leading to it being self-sufficient; it is also clearly meant to be a microcosm of society, with all the different levels representing class differences and the protagonist unable to be left alone since one cannot opt out of society. Most intriguing though is the chaos that results during rolling blackouts and building faults, and with lots of daunting exterior helicopter shots and creepy music, this is a really atmospheric ride.

At first glance, this is a downbeat tale of bitter individuals trying to find happiness while believing that everything is stacked against them. Where the film really begins though to excel is in the final half-hour, which gets deliciously weird as fantasy and reality begin to blur in a way that allows us to view all the demons, insecurities and worries inside the protagonist's head. The final ten minutes in particular resonate quite strongly.

Personally, I'm disinclined to count it, but since it actually happened to me, I thought I'd ask.

I agree that distance is important for rewatches - not everybody is rewatching stuff they saw 70 years ago, but still ...

For sure. And it happens so rarely that it's never been an issue before. It just so happened that yesterday I made my wife watch two things qualifying for this month's challenges that I had watched a couple days prior (Marc Maron: Too Real and BabaKiueria), so I thought I'd ask, even though I didn't intend to count them.

Helen Mirren is great ahere and strikes up excellent rapport with co-star Ryan Reynolds. The courtroom scenes are really riveting - and yet, the film often breaks up the intensity with flashbacks to 1940s Austria where the characters speak German, yet the tiny hard-coded English subtitles make it hard to follow what is being said. Reynolds is oddly under-developed too with a neglected wife and baby on the way that only ever occasionally crop up.

12. Darklands (Richards, 1996)
Bad modern rip-off of The Wicker Man, moving the action to industrialised South Wales. There's none of the subtlety of its progenitor; this explicitly paints paganism (and the Welsh in general) as evil and Christian civilisation as good. Still, none of this ever really seems offensive because the film is more silly than sinister, and the pagans' evil plot doesn't make sense. That said, this does have more chainsaw murders than The Wicker Man.

13. Hereditary (Aster, 2018)
An excellent horror film. It revels in the dread and intensity that recent horror trends have tended to avoid in favour of surprise jump-scares for mainstream multiplex horror, and more thoughtful conceptual horror for the arthouse. Hereditary does use its horror in a metaphorical way, but interestingly it's not a simple one-to-one relationship like where Babadook was a metaphor for depression or Get Out was a metaphor for insidious racism. The horror in this one comes from themes of family tensions, grief and madness and it conveys them brilliantly. However it does have some major flaws: it's not enough of its own thing, with very heavy borrowings from Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, there's a slow-burn start that should have been tightened up, and at the end it explains pretty much everything when it would have been scarier to leave some ambiguity. A very impressive debut feature.
7/10

14. Seoul Station (Yeon, 2016)
An animated prequel/sidequel to Train to Busan. I didn't really like it. The animation seems very rotoscoped and computerised, and there's a big twist about a character at the end that makes no sense in the context of that character's actions. The story is fairly standard zombie stuff, but it does boast a few decent scenes of zombies attacking en masse, particularly a sequence where the heroine has to complete an obstacle course of urban fixtures while zombies swarm just out of reach.

16. Te'alat Blaumilch / Blaumilch Canal / The Big Dig (Ephraim Kishon, 1969)
17. Mapantsula (Oliver Schmitz, 1988)
18. Queimada (Gillo Pontecorvo, 1969))
19. The Legend of Billie Jean (Matthew Robbins, 1985)

21. Sumuru (Darrell Roodt, 2003, SOUTH AFRICA/Canada/UK/Germany)
22. Rape (John Lennon/Yoko Ono, 1969)
23. Secrets (Frank Borzage, 1933)
24. License to Drive (Greg Beeman, 1988) (re-watch)
25. Avenging Angel (Robert Vincent O'Neill, 1985)
26. Hereditary (Ari Aster, 2018)

Well, this was something all right, but I can't quite join in the chorus of "BEST HORROR FILM SINCE..." hosannas. Without spoiling too much (difficult in this case), the film's turns from family drama to psychological horror (is Toni Collette imagining all this crazy shit?) to...to the place it ends up in the last third or so certainly made for an interesting ride, but it all felt a bit too literal for me in the end, and I also felt that Collette's profession was going to have more real importance to the events at hand - it seemed like there were so many obvious setups there. BUT it's a really interestingly shot film and the performances, particularly Collette's, are really good. Well worth seeing for most horror fans I would think at any rate, and many are obviously more taken with it than I was, though I will say that this felt even as I was leaving the cinema like something that I could easily see again and maybe get more out of.

27. Ragewar aka Dungeonmaster (a ton of directors, 1984)

Somewhat promising if also somewhat hackneyed (even in 1984 I think) premise of scientist Paul's (Jeffrey Byron)) experimental AI computer gaining power and taking him and his girlfriend Gwen (Leslie Wing) into a dream-magic-sci-fi war and manifesting in the form of Richard Moll as an evil sorcerer who commands our hapless scientist to win a bunch of tests before he and Gwen can escape. Moll is fun as the villain and there's a cool stop-motion monster at one point, but this is derailed ultimately by a cheapness that makes the stunt of using a different director for each scene moot - all of it looks to be under the strong presiding hand of co-producer/writer/director Charles Band anyway. And Jeffrey Byron is one of the least charismatic leads I've seen in a long time.

28. Hell and High Water (Sam Fuller, 1954)

This was the only Sam Fuller film from his classic period I hadn't seen - only have a couple of late works to go now - and after seeing it, I'm not too surprised that I didn't get to it earlier or that it's not on any lists. Not terrible by any means but the preposterous story - an American mercenary, post-Korea (Richard Widmark, who really doesn't seem to want to be here) leading a ragtag crew in a retrofitted WWII Japanese sub to find out if the Russkies are conducting secret nuclear tests on a remote northern Pacific island - never seems remotely convincing, the effects and sets are fairly poor, and Bella Darvi is hardly convincing as a polymath who is somehow a leading nuclear scientist AND linguist who specializes in Asian languages (as well as being fluent in several European tongues) at the age of 20 or so. It's not the most offensive or extreme Red Scare paranoia flick out there, but it's one of the duller examples.

29. The Bridge at Remagen (John Guillermin, 1969)

OK WWII film, from the latter part of the boom in all-star, big-budget genre pieces from America (and sometimes co-producing countries), most of which are decent enough entertainments but have little to offer in terms of historical accuracy or commentary on the horrors of war. This one is nicely put together with high production values but a somewhat lackluster cast - George Segal as the main American protagonist, really? Ben Gazzara is a little more interesting as his snotty, greedy, but ultimately worthy enough sergeant and Robert Vaughn is fine as the German counterpart trying to first hold, then destroy the title bridge across the Rhine as the allies advance in 1945. It's good enough if you like this sort of thing, for sure, but nothing special.

30. Cabascabo (Oumarou Ganda, 1969)

Nice little tale of titular character, a veteran of the French Indochina campaign (played by the director), returning to his village in Niger and finding himself an outsider in every way - we get a glimpse of this in the Indochina footage, as he's French but not really French, in "his own country" which is another colony like Niger - and of course a second-class warrior because he's black and African. At home he's a Muslim who drinks, a man who wears military clothes around people in traditional garb, a hot-tempered guy who can't keep a job, and can't qualify for the police. Overall a rather glum tale, but Cabascabo's dogged determination keeps him or the film from descending into tragedy and despair.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Looks like instead of replacing your score of 6 with 13 to match your most recent update, I instead typed a 13 next to the 6. Will fix when I next update the leaderboard (in two hours or less). In the meantime, enjoy momentarily feeling on top of the world. ;)

Hi sol.

Haven't been watching too much cinema over the last few weeks due to political and sporting interests rather taking over but a few have come my way that fit in with this challenge.

01. 'The Interrupted Journey' / 1949, Daniel Birt / 6/10
02. 'Final Appointment' / 1954, Terence Fisher / 6/10
03. 'The Man from Galveston' / 1963, William Conrad / 7/10
04. 'Pop Pirates' / 1984, Jack Grossman / 4/10
05. 'Tequila Sunrise' / 1988, Robert Towne / 6.5 or 7/10
06. 'DeepStar Six' / 1989, Sean S. Cunningham / 6/10
07. 'Les mécréants' / 2011, Mohcine Besri / 6.5/10
08. 'Después de Lucía' / 2012, Michel Franco / 9/10
09. 'Run' / 2014, Philippe Lacote / 7.5/10
10. 'La bete curieuse' / 2017, Laurent Perreau / 7/10

The poster to Philippe Lacote's darkly mesmerising 'Run', in which, as MaryAnn Johanson puts it, we are immersed in a multi-layered consideration of Cote d'Ivoire where ''prophecy and politics are intertwined in a realm where strange and beautiful imagery takes on dark meaning, and violence and male posturing rules all'':

18. Le doudou, by Julien Hervé & Philippe Mechelen (2018) 6/10

Average, silly french comedy. Funny when at its most delirious...

19. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mike Newell (2018) 7,5/10

A nice surprise, as Newell's mastery turns this average topic into an interesting film on life on an Island, the legacy of the German Occupation, and on how reading can help you...

Narrated by Martin Sheen, this documentary chronicles the relocation of Hopi and Navajo Amerindians by the US government and as Sheen points out that the word "relocation" does not exist in Navajo language, the film makes some potent points. The overall documentary is uneven though, swaying between showing us the impact of the lives of everyday Amerindians (segments that are often mawkish due to poor music and hyperbolic phrases) and drumming up evidence for a government conspiracy theory, which could have been explored in more depth.

The grainy black-and-white photography suits this documentary on a 16-hour grueling group therapy session well, and memorable incidents include a mother with grown children admitting that she now has more affection for her cats, and a businessman saying that "it's a mystery that people seem to need other people". Clocking in at less than an hour though, the film feels very short and truncated. More background into the social/psychological experiment at hand would have also helped - but this is intriguing stuff.
