Unoffical Challenge

#401

Post by Knaldskalle » July 1st, 2018, 12:07 am

I just have not gotten around to watching anything this month. Last night, just to at least get on the scoreboard, I watched

1. The Tenth Victim (Petri, 1965). A little bit disappointing, considering it's Elio Petri, but by no means a bad movie. Hunger Games/Series 7: The Contenders 40 years early. Some nice satire, but not as biting as I like it.
Personal film goals for 2019.

36. Black Code (2016)

A so-so doc about internet freedom around the world. Some good info, but nothing rises above the quality level of "eh, that's fair".

37. Only God Forgives (2013)

This has been on my watchlist all month, and I finally pulled the trigger on it. I mean, I have to watch the only unofficial movie on the forums 1000 Favorite Films list, right? Really glad I did - beautifully shot film, with amazing coloring and backgrounds. Very moody and dark, and hit a great level of discomfort and disgust for the viewer. However many of you voted for it to get it on our favorites list, thank you all. Added to mine now.

And that is likely (though not quite certainly) done for me. Thanks for hosting this, sol!

22. Rape (John Lennon/Yoko Ono, 1969)
23. Secrets (Frank Borzage, 1933)
24. License to Drive (Greg Beeman, 1988) (re-watch)
25. Avenging Angel (Robert Vincent O'Neill, 1985)
26. Hereditary (Ari Aster, 2018)
27. Ragewar aka Dungeonmaster (a ton of directors, 1984)
28. Hell and High Water (Sam Fuller, 1954)
29. The Bridge at Remagen (John Guillermin, 1969)
30. Cabascabo (Oumarou Ganda, 1969)
31. Forbidden World (Allan Holzman, 1982)

Like an awful lot of SF-horror films of the 80s, this is obviously influenced by Alien and seemingly The Thing - though it came out at about the same time as the latter, so maybe more the 1950s film. In any case the story here is about some marshal from the "federation" (of course) who awakens en route to a strange planet from hypersleep, his faithful android copilot/assistant informing him that there's a problem of a biological nature on this remote research station. He lands, it turns out there's a weird alien horror that the scientists have stupidly created, he has sex with one of the two hot women on the station (June Chadwick, best known for the "Yoko" role to Michael McKean's character in Spinal Tap), there's lots more nudity, there's some very cheap gross effects, most of the people die, the world is saved, the end. Just fucking terrible all around.

That does it for me, thanks sol!
Here's to the fools who dream.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. And thanks to everyone else for your thanks. I hope this becomes an annual thing too because my Unofficial backlog is still pretty massive, but it was nice at least to make some progress on it. As to jd's thought bubble, I don't know, I would say that my ration of disappointments to pleasant-surprises was actually higher here than in most Challenges (most Official Lists, after all, contain quality films) but it was interesting nonetheless. The best treat for me was being able to include every single film that I saw in the cinema during June, which made me less fussy than usual, lol.

A gentle reminder that I will be closing this Challenge in a little under 24 hours - at which point it will have been July for a whole day pretty much everywhere in the world.

As usual, it is your choice whether you miss the deadline or not. It was clearly marked in the OP since the start of the month. And yes, this includes you, Ferg. ;)

June was a terrible film-watching month for me.

1. Sumarbörn [Summer Children] (2017 Iceland) - 7.4 - okay film about children. Suits the gloomy mood that can be found there, I suppose.
2. The Forbidden Kingdom (2008 USA) - 7.0 - meh, not terrible, not great.
3. Vivo per la tua morte [A Long Ride from Hell] (1968 Italy) - 6.2 - interesting setup, boring execution. Plus the standard spaghetti western silliness.
4. Hrútar [Rams] (2015 Iceland) - 7.8 - slow film that's also gloomy, but better executed and more interesting. Best film I saw this month.
5. His Majesty's Sergeant (1983 Ghana) - 5.6 - Saw this on Kanopy. Very amateurish with a great setup but middling execution. Also, the movie ended so abruptly I'm not sure if part of it is missing. Rated this the lowest I could without it actually becoming a dislike, because it does have some merit. {also fits the 1980s and African challenges}

And I saw 57 minutes of shorts, just below the cutoff. Probably saw/rewatched a music video or two to put me over the limit... but meh.

26. 'Let 'em Have It' / 1935, Sam Wood / 7.5 or 8/10
27. 'Hangman's Wharf' / 1950, Cecil H. Williamson / 6.5/10
28. 'The Spaniard's Curse' / 1958, Ralph Kemplen / 6/10
29. 'The Gentle Trap' / 1960, Charles Saunders / 5/10
30. 'La notte dei serpenti' / 1969, Giulio Petroni / 6.5/10

39. 'Eng nei Zait' / 2015, Christophe Wagner / 7/10
40. 'Extinction' / 2015, Miguel Ángel Vivas / 6/10

Small town lives shattered by an affair and electrified on the screen through flashbacks and close-ups and by a performance of naive humanity and startling, harrowing intensity from Barbara Hershey ('A Killing in a Small Town'):

14. Seoul Station (Yeon, 2016) 4/10
15. Desu nôto / Death Note (Kaneko, 2006)
Anime adaptation mafia must have pushed up the rating for this on IMDb. I actually think I preferred the US film version, because this has a whole host of problems, mainly having an extremely rushed feeling despite being over two hours long and only telling half the story. Despite that, the strength of the core idea and keeps the film going.

16. Underworld: Blood Wars / Underworld: Next Generation (Foerster, 2016)
I don't think any of the Underworld films are particularly good, but this one is one of the better ones, delivering lots of British thesps camping it up as vampires and werewolves and a bunch of absurd action scenes. I had difficulty understanding the continuity, despite having seen all the previous entries in the franchise.

Well, waddaya know, I managed to get another one under my belt last night:

2. Tajouj (Gubara, 1977). A mess. It's a VHS-rip with both English white burned-in subtitles (half of which you can't read) and Arab overlaid titles (TV ads?). The story seems very familiar, lovers who can't have each other due to social status differences and tragedy ensues.

2. Tajouj (Gubara, 1977)

Hi Roger. Thanks for the updates. Just to let you know that I will probably be taking your score as 40 for this Challenge because it was already around 3:30pm on July 1 your time when you posted your #26-40 viewings, so anything that you would have seen subsequent to this would not have been stuff you had seen while it was still June on your side of the world. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for playing. :)

Hi sol! It most certainly does not make sense. I wouldn't post them if I hadn't seen them during June. Here is my IMDb rating history, where you should be able to see the date of my rating: https://www.imdb.com/user/ur43574380/ratings.

I watched 50 films for this Unofficial Challenge hosted by you. If you are so unfairly going to cast off and discount 10 of those viewings, I would rather you marked me down for 0 in this challenge.

Hi, Roger. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. :( Can you at least give some insight into why you posted your last few viewings in two separate batches with around 17 hours difference between them? It's pretty unusual behaviour, and something that I have never encountered from any other participant since I have been hosting these challenges. Not meaning to offend - just trying to understand your process.

Of course. My family commitments are increased when I'm the sole adult in the house. That, along with the fact that I had a rugby game, meant I couldn't post all my viewings in one closing bunch. I wanted to catch a game on television that afternoon so I only posted 15 of them. I happen to use a shared family computer so other family members often have different things they want to do on it. Sometimes it is hard to find an opportune moment. I do not mean to antagonise or annoy.

21. A night in Casablanca, by Archi Mayo (1946) 6,5/10

Not the best of the Marx Brothers, but a few sequences are hilarious, including a packing scene where clothes have a tendency to diseappear...

22. Roar, by Noel Marshall (1981) 7/10

The script is rather limited, but the way this films shows humans surrounded by lions and tigers is incredible and extremely spectacular. Definitely worth a watch.

Ah, okay. Thanks for explaining. I will amend the results in the leader board shortly to include your full 50. :) I seem to recall that this similarly was a problem on the Westerns Challenge thread. I must remember to follow your film watching progress online. Should be easy enough since we are iCM pals. :D

Eh, thanks. Not to sound unappreciative, I always finds stats interesting, but why especially for me? ^_^

Yep, this should be done every year.
Well, this what motivated me to work out those stats:

Not runned the numbers on this, but I reckon this is the challenge with the highest average rating ever. (speaking for myself ofc)
As for doing this every year, that's something I would like to discuss when setting up the 2019 Challenge Schedule. Last year, there was talk about making some Challenges (horror, docos, etc) permanent, and we could discuss this one being among those. But that's for later. This year, I'm planning to release a separate discussion thread for 2019 Challenges before voting (probably in September) to avoid some of the issues last year from users who missed our discussions on the Future Challenges thread and got annoyed when their pet favourites weren't put up to vote.

LOL. I probably should have gone with "Zero Official Lists Challenge", but that sounded way too wordy at the time. :pinch:
