This Holocaust documentary is partially narrated by Orson Welles (always a plus), Elmer Bernstein provides a riveting music score that suits the project well and the general presentation is quite interesting with the screen often split into two or three sections to show multiple photographs or videos at once. While a decent primer, Genocide does not, however, really bring anything new to the table other than some doomsday-like "it might happen again" paranoia. I absolutely dug the animated bit though.

A pretty good collection of Official List shorts. Luxo Jr. is pretty cute with its humanoid lamps and the sound effects are great; it seems a little slight nowadays but understandably it was revolutionary back then. The Deadman has a high number of dislikes on iCM but with its stark black and white photography and frequent title cards, I found it to be an intriguing variation on the average adult film. Dimensions of Dialogue is the masterpiece of this bunch though; a Svanmajer stop animation movie that made me really consider how we are all just a bunch of atoms interacting with one another. The Silent Majority probably impressed me the least of these shorts, but some of the narrated inner thoughts were certainly interesting.

This horror film is compromised by a comedy streak that does not always gel (a random slobbering monster in a car, etc). For the most part though, this is an innovative movie borne from paranoia that existed in the 1980s over subliminal messages in music and the ill effects of heavy metal music on the young. There are some fantastic special effects too, from pumpkins on a porch shooting up flames to people being grabbed from inside television sets and pulled out.

In an attempt to do something different, the filmmakers of this creature feature keep the critters entirely off-screen until halfway in, and even then we only see the briefest glimpses with them not appearing in full until the final 25 minutes. It is not a choice for the better though since the characters just banter and talking about sex non-stop (and these are university graduates, not horny teens!). Things do admittedly pick up as tentacles begin to appear, and there is an awesome high camera angle bit in which a victim is pulled by her arm into a cellar (see above).

Bang! was weird and random and I did really get much out of it. The telephone at the end was amusing though. Vincent was awesome; Tim Burton's visuals are of course magnificent, but it is Vincent Price's energetic, poetic voice-over narration that really makes the film come alive. Jumping was even more awesome and might be my favourite of this bunch; innovative, first person POV drawings that really give a sense of jumping all over Japan. Red's Dream had an amusing twist and like Luxo Jr., Pixar manages to make usually inanimate objects quite cute here. Girls Night Out was pretty annoying and did not really go anywhere. Creature Comforts was a short I remembered seeing around 20 years ago. Held up quite well; really funny to see all the animals talking like average Joe human beings, and there are some nifty background touches (one bird pulling another's elastically-held beak). Puissance de la parole has Godard experimenting with rapid fire editing and oceanic/outer space imagery. Some good music choices, though like most of Godard's feature films, it is more interesting in theory than practice.

And that's probably it for me - unless I manage to squeeze something in before tonight. Thanks for hosting 72a!

So Totally 80sShow

1. Nighthawks (Bruce Malmuth/Gary Johnson, 1981) (re-watch)
2. Purgatory (Ami Artzi, 1988)
3. Out of Control (Alan Holzman, 1985)
4. Risky Business (Paul Brickman, 1983) (re-watch)
5. Zapped! (Robert J. Rosenthal, 1982)
6. Nyamanton / Lessons from the Garbage (Cheick Oumar Sissoko, 1987)
7. Angel (Robert Vincent O'Neill, 1984))
8. Murphy's Law (J. Lee Thompson, 1986)
9. Alien degli abissi / Alien From the Deep (Antonio Margheriti, 1989)
10. Mapantsula (Oliver Schmitz, 1988)
11. The Legend of Billie Jean (Matthew Robbins, 1985)
12. The Stick / Platoon Warrior (Darrell Roodt, 1988)
13. License to Drive (Greg Beeman, 1988) (re-watch)
14. Avenging Angel (Robert Vincent O'Neill, 1985)
15. Yam Daabo (Idrissa Ouedraogo, 1987)
16. Ragewar aka Dungeonmaster (a ton of directors, 1984)
17. I, the Jury (Richard T. Heffron, 1982)
18. Mike's Murder (James Bridges, 1984)
19. Timestalkers (Michael Schultz, 1987)
20. Forbidden World (Allan Holzman, 1982)

Like an awful lot of SF-horror films of the 80s, this is obviously influenced by Alien and seemingly The Thing - though it came out at about the same time as the latter, so maybe more the 1950s film. In any case the story here is about some marshal from the "federation" (of course) who awakens en route to a strange planet from hypersleep, his faithful android copilot/assistant informing him that there's a problem of a biological nature on this remote research station. He lands, it turns out there's a weird alien horror that the scientists have stupidly created, he has sex with one of the two hot women on the station (June Chadwick, best known for the "Yoko" role to Michael McKean's character in Spinal Tap), there's lots more nudity, there's some very cheap gross effects, most of the people die, the world is saved, the end. Just fucking terrible all around.

21. Black Widow (Bob Rafelson, 1987) (re-watch, maybe)

I'll just reprint what I wrote on the Movie Pet Hates thread:

Last night I watched this piece of junk - or re-watched it, I had it rated and I really feel like I did see it, likely on VHS in the late 80s, but I had essentially no memory of it. It's full of stupid shit but a couple of related key plot failures stand out. I'm not gonna put up spoiler tags because there isn't really any suspense in this theoretically suspenseful film, we know Theresa Russell is a killer from literally the first moments of the film.

1 - So Debra Winger is the Justice Department investigator who figures out that Russell is murdering wealthy men for their money. She's a desk jockey and begs to get the assignment to track her down, even though she's never been in the field and this is a skillfull murderer we're talking about. Of course she's allowed to go off on her own with no back-up at all and virtually no contact with the home office, particularly once she follows Russell to Hawaii - for months.

2 - she allows herself to be in danger being totally alone with Russell in isolated locations numerous times. This element could be explained I suppose by the apparent attraction she feels to the killer, but still - an investigator with 6 years experience just hangs out with a serial killer on isolated beaches or in other non-public spaces, time and again, knowing that the killer is smart and resourceful (uh, y'know, she might be on to you Debra!).

It's not a horrible film but this level of stupidity on the level of the main character, and law enforcement in general basically kills any chance of it being worthwhile apart from the acting (some of it) and Conrad Hall's beautiful images.
Here's to the fools who dream.

42. Offret (1986)

And yet another Tarkovsky that falls into the "beautiful, but I don't get it" category. It'll be due for a rewatch down the line. So much going on and attention to detail, and it's fun watching movies like this where everything that appears on screen is a deliberate and consequential choice.

43. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Rewatch. Been several years since I've seen this, and my wife was REALLY interested in watching this one. And I wasn't expecting a whole lot from a romance movie made 30 years ago set 20 years before that. But the social attitudes and message actually turned out to be OK. And I won't lie - the dance at the end got me. It was just such a sweet perfect ending to the movie.

What an inspiring double feature!

Anyway my first viewing of The Sacrifice was one of my most memorable first viewings ever and it INSTANTLY made AT my favorite director with only the one film watched. In fact it's still probably the greatest FTV on video I've ever experienced. I don't think I "got" all of it either on one go but it sure made me want more.
Here's to the fools who dream.

My viewing experience with this was a bit weird. I started watching it high to conduct an experiment - I tend to appreciate that fantasy/surreal type of cinema better while high (Eraserhead freaked me out), and I wanted to see if that would translate to Tarkovsky. And I have to say that experiment was successful, but a little too successful. Right about the halfway point in the film, I had to turn it off because I was so uncomfortable - the mood of the film was so dark to me that I had to go watch something funny to balance me out. When I finished the film the next day (sober), I lost a lot of that magic. I really want to go back and get all the way through it in once sitting.

Did make me really excited for Nostalgia, my last unseen Tarkovsky feature.

2. My Beautiful Laundrette (Frears, 1985). Nice. I'm not quite sure I get why it's considered one of the very best British movies ever, but it does manage to touch on a lot of subjects and has an undeniable charm.

20. Forbidden World (Allan Holzman, 1982)
21. Black Widow (Bob Rafelson, 1987) (re-watch, maybe)
22. Sarraounia (Met Hondo, 1986)

Perhaps a bit of a disappointment after being knocked over by Hondo's Soleil Ô a few days ago, this is nevertheless a very solid historical/war drama about the eponymous queen of a Hausa tribe who successfully resisted French invasion in 1899. Sarraounia is groomed for greatness by her father and grows up a tough, uncompromising warrior, but the film is ultimately less interested in her or even in her tribe's resistance than it is in the blundering, arrogant and vicious French troops led by the monstrous Captain Voulet, and it becomes clear through the course of the film that it's the French hubris and their refusal to learn anything about the people they're conquering that leads to their ultimate defeat.

and ending on a high note

23. Yeelen / Brightness (Souleymane Cissé, 1987) (4th or 5th viewing)

Five production companies? Maybe you'll understand why if you compare the production values here to those of just about any other sub-Saharan film in the 1980s. I was introduced to this when it was new; living in Chicago I was under the spell of Jonathan Rosenbaum, then and still the most significant influence on my film tastes, and while I probably agree with him a little less now than 30 years ago, this is one case where I'm fully aligned, and after many viewings this is still pretty easily the best African film I've seen, and probably still in my top 10 for the decade. There are few films that take me into a mythical and strange world so utterly - that so take me out of my contemporary "rational" "non-superstitious" viewpoint; Ten Canoes is another example I saw not too long ago, but Yeelen probably reigns supreme, a story of two sorcerers, father and son, in a fight to the death, for reasons that remain elusive, in a world of magic where nature, earth, air, sky, animal, plant all seem as alive and conscious as man. The cinematography by Jean-Noël Faragut and Jean-Michel Huneau is lush, vibrant and certainly shows a brightness commensurate with the title; the music by Salif Keita and Michel Portal is by turns mysterious/spooky/eerie and percussive, somehow sounding neither primitive nor modern, but of no time (at least no real time) or place, in a fantastic land like the film it accompanies. A film you very much have to get wrapped up in and be prepared for a journey that will probably never make complete sense, a trip into a foreign space in every sense of the word.

That's it for me, thanks 72allin!
Here's to the fools who dream.

June was a terrible film-watching month for me.

1. His Majesty's Sergeant (1983 Ghana) - 5.6 - Saw this on Kanopy. Very amateurish with a great setup but middling execution. Also, the movie ended so abruptly I'm not sure if part of it is missing. Rated this the lowest I could without it actually becoming a dislike, because it does have some merit. {also fits the African and unofficial challenges}
