or limit tv series episodes to 25% max of all watchings reported by a poster, so challenges stay film-oriented
I like either one or both of these suggestions. I do agree though that it's probably not wise to completely ban TV across the board on every challenge. Some challenges are better suited to it than others but with allowing like one 42 minute episode to count as a watch lets people dominate challenges just by marathoning a series. I know when I watched some Buffy the Vampire Slayer during a Horror Challenge once, I counted two episodes as one point just cuz that seemed more fair to me personally.

This Borowczyk film is pretty slow to warm up with over half an hour elapsing before anything grisly happens, but once it gets going, whoa. At its best, Patrick Magee is strapped to a chair and forced to watch Mr. Hyde (a sex fiend here) sodomise his daughter in a scene that vividly recalls his wife's rape in A Clockwork Orange, but with silhouetted members and phallic gramophones. This is, however, a film where too much dialogue subtracts from the experience.

Witchdoctor of the Living Dead:
This has all the typical technological foibles of a no-budget film including tinny sound recording, amateur acting, and frequently out-of-focus videography that often drive viewers mad (myself included), but it overcomes them with enough oddities of onscreen behavior and subject matter that I was fully engaged and entertained throughout. Among the highlights: snakes that emerge from zombie mouths, shape-shifting characters, slo-mo scenes that actually enhance the eeriness of certain events such as a grave opening and closing, odd choices of music oddly used combined with a percussive use of sound fx. Except for a scene involving animal cruelty I liked this a lot.

I’m going to include them in the next challenge I’m hosting (1990-20xx), since I have included them in the three other decade challenges. Not sure after that. Would be a nice if we had a common rule.
I generally view these challenges as a fun way to explore <topic>. Whether it be film or TV or whatever, immersing yourself in a topic and/or challenging yourself to open up to new topics is the point - so I tend to prefer including TV as the default. There's quite a few series I've started/watched purely because of the challenges around here (e.g., WestWorld, The Corner, Roots, The Story of Film).

That said, when the topics get too broad, I think it's very reasonable to put some limits in place to encourage exploration in the intended topic. The Unofficial challenge is a perfect example - the intended goal of the challenge is to explore those films that didn't make any of the official lists and (hopefully) find some new gems. So excluding TV episodes makes perfect sense to me there. On the flip side, I think it would be great if people wanted to watch some African TV series for the African challenge (no one has yet) - it would be a great way to explore and learn about some of the different cultures there.

Personally, I'm against having a common rule regarding TV series - I'd rather it be left up to the host's discretion. I mean, we have a pretty reasonable process around here; we discuss, we argue, we come to a consensus, and the challenge host implements the decision.
I think leaving the inclusion of TV to the host's discretion and whether or not it fits the challenge is a great idea - pretty much the way it is done now. I like to catch up on TV from time to time and the ability to do that is one of the things that attracted me to the challenges here.

If we made any change at all I would suggest going to minutes watched as the best way of being fair. That levels the playing field somewhat and makes watching longer films just as attractive as watching shorter ones or TV episodes. It would also make it easier to include shorts rather than having to compile 60 minutes of them to make a point. I've hosted challenges like that on other sites (The Horror Board and Trash Epics) and it was well-received after the participants got used to the different method.
I think the discussion isn't "if the host says it it's okay" because that's not a controversial position to take. Rather what's debatable is the forum's default unwritten rule is that "if it's not mentioned, then TV episodes are okay".

I'm in the camp against TV episodes shouldn't be okay unless expressly permitted. I mean, right now someone who watches two 2-hours movies gets half the score of someone who watches four 44-minute episodes of a TV show. Feels like it violates the spirit of the whole challenge to watch movies of a category.

What I'm saying is that I really like the idea of tabulating total minutes. Feels like a much more equitable system. It would encourage people to be less "strategic" about their choices. So something like "Shoah" (566 min) won't count the same as something like "Tetsuo, the Iron Man" (67min).

BTW, this discussion got moved over to the future challenges thread earlier today in case you or anyone else is interested in following it.

34. God's Country (1985)

Louis Malle documentary about small town Minnesota. Originally shot in 1979, he returned in 1985 to follow up with members of this small town and how the intervening years had shaped them. Interesting to see the life fall out of these people's eyes and how the policies of the Reagan era crushed them. My big gripe with this film is that I wish they had spent more time with them in 1985. It only ended up being 15-20 minutes, but I was hoping for at least double that. Fascinating changes.

Okay attempt at a definitive Tarzan movie; big pluses are John Alcott's swooping cinematography and excellent ape makeup effects that allows the monkey suited actors to emote like human beings with looks of affection and all. The story varies in how interesting it is though. The feral child dialogue-free scenes are great; same goes for the initial scenes where he is taught English. All the Jane moments fall flat though and the whole thing is pretty dull until he is orphaned as an infant.

Exactly!

BTW, this discussion got moved over to the future challenges thread earlier today in case you or anyone else is interested in following it.
Okay, no idea whether to post it here or there, however, counting minutes is not without its own issues - do we count NTSC or PAL runtimes, do participants have to add up their own times, is it up to the host to double check everyone's adding up and so on. Probably a few other things too but I'm a little tired and can't think straight right now.

14. Biloxi Blues (Mike Nichols, 1988) - 8.5/10
A lot of laugh out loud moments and great performances from every member of the cast, especially Christopher Walken. Also features the sweetest dance scene I think I've seen in any film. I just love Mike Nichols.

15. Who's Harry Crumb? (Paul Flaherty, 1989) - 4/10
Had potential, but was directed without any sort of comedic timing. Not even John Candy can save this mess.

16. Glory (Edward Zwick, 1989) - 7/10
Great character development but it tried too hard to tug on the heart strings. The overwhelming score was particularly obnoxious.

It would encourage people to be less "strategic" about their choices. So something like "Shoah" (566 min) won't count the same as something like "Tetsuo, the Iron Man" (67min)."

Good questions.

I wasn't aware that NTSC and PAL runtimes differed that much even though I have watched a few films on PAL.
EDIT: I checked and there is a difference - a 90 minute film in NTSC runs roughly 86 minutes in PAL, which could be a significant difference given the amount of films that get watched for these challenges.

Yeah, it's up to participants to record and add their own run times. As a host, I would only check when the winners were close or if something looked obviously wrong - somebody jumping 500 minutes with just a couple of films, for instance. Usually an honest mistake - afterall, everyone's on their honor that they really watch what they say they watch here so they should be on their honor to report proper run times.

It definitely takes a little more time and effort to report your watches when you have to keep track of the running times and add them up, but if competitors are concerned about the length of what's being watched for points it's hard to imagine there's a more accurate scale than going by minutes watched.

1. The King of Comedy

I like it when Scorsese restrains some of his showmanship impulses. The result here is a Bob De Niro show, which is pretty good.
