Doesn't that put you at 14, and not 12? It looks like you missed Samt el qusur and House on Willow Street from your earlier post.

And yes, I missed those two. Thanks for pointing that out! I recorded them in my spreadsheet, just didn't compare them to the list for some odd reason. Anyway, it'll be updated in a few minutes.
Touché! Looks like we've both got to be a little more on the ball

I was just having a look at the countries list and notice Togo hasn't been done yet. If anyone is looking at knocking that off the list I recommend Ashakara which is streaming on Kanopy. I watched it for the March Around the World challenge on Letterboxd in March and it is worth the time for anyone interested.

Dark Continent, Bright FilmsShow
1. Jerusalema (Ralph Ziman, 2008) South Africa

2. THREE SHORTS 30 + 22 + 15 = 67 minutes total, all from Senegal
a) Niaye (Ousmane Sembene, 1964) -
b) Contras' City (Djibril Diop Mambèty, 1969) -
c) Petite Lumière / Little Light (Alain Gomis, 2003)

3. TWO SHORTS 36 + 29 = 65 minutes totals
a. Le wazzou polygame / The Polygamist's Morale (Oumaru Ganda, 1971, NIGER/France)
b. Concerto pour un exil / Concerto for an Exile (Désiré Ecaré, 1968, IVORY COAST/France)

4. Purgatory (Ami Artzi, 1988, SOUTH AFRICA)
5. Nyamanton / Lessons from the Garbage (Cheick Oumar Sissoko, 1987, MALI)
6. Mapantsula (Oliver Schmitz, 1988, SOUTH AFRICA/UK)

Tough, uncompromising anti-Apartheid film made a few years before the end, banned in the country at the time of course but now fairly highly regarded I would guess. It's basically the story of Panic (who also goes by a few other names), a would-be petty criminal whose trouble with the law over small crimes eventually mutates into revolutionary politics. The film alternates between the narrative of Panic's break-up with his girlfriend and his abusiveness towards her and others, his total self-absorption which eventually starts to change, and scenes of him in prison being coerced into giving names and places for a movement that he really doesn't comprehend. The use of language - the police using Afrikaans as a way to assert their authority over a black populace that often doesn't understand it, and the different names given to Panic by himself and others - is a striking way of showing that not all authoritarian policies are obviously violent; dehumanizing people through treating adults as boys, through disallowing their use of their own names is quite telling.

7. Al-ard / The Land (Youssef Chahine, 1969, EGYPT)

A somewhat strange and conflicted (with itself) film here, one in which the harsh reality of the plight of peasants having their land and water taken away from them contrasts with several subplots, mostly involving the beautiful daughter of one of the peasant elders and her various suitors. One little storyline that seems like it's going to be important, involving the young son of one of the wealthier people in the village, just disappears, and the film alternates between hope and despair in a way that seems often abrupt and not all that realistic; there are also moments where it seems to threaten to break into a musical, something not uncommon in Chahine's work (and he did make some full-fledged musicals later on). Still it's beautifully shot and acted, especially by Mahmoud Almeleji as the proud and stolid Abu Swelam, and while it's not for me one of Chahine's best films at this point, I won't soon forget the amazing land very powerful last scene and shot.

8. The Stick / Platoon Warrior (Darrell Roodt, 1988, SOUTH AFRICA)

Another hard film made during apartheid, this tells the story of a group of 7 white and 1 black soldier on a mission to find out what's out there in the veld that's been killing soldiers - rumors are that it's a group of tribesman painted as ghosts, surprising well-trained squads out of nowhere. This operates as both a horror film and a drama about how one of the men (the narrator) slowly comes to the realization that what the soldiers - and, obviously, by implication the government - are doing isn't going to end well. The copy I watched of this - probably the only thing available - was a pretty poor VHS rip with no subs for the (small) parts in Afrikaans and whatever tribal language was being spoken; I liked this a fair bit but I suspect it'd be even more impressive in a good HD presentation.

9. Sumuru (Darrell Roodt, 2003, SOUTH AFRICA/Canada/UK/Germany)

Alas the second in my Darrell Roodt double feature was not nearly on the same level, not that I suspected it would be. Based (supposedly) on the title character who appears in several Sax Rohmer stories, this is a really cheesy and cheap sci-fi action flick about a couple of guys from Earth or more properly the closer Earth colonies who crashland on Antares, a planet very far from the usual space lanes, and encounter a female-led quasi-medieval, quasi-religious-cultish society led by the title character, played very woodenly by the German actress Alexandra Kamp. Lots of very predictable action and fights between Sumuru and an evil cult queen (Simona Williams) as the two space guys try to convince Sumuru to not only let them live but to come back to "civilization" with them because humanity needs them. Bottom-of-the-barrel digital effects and surprisingly no nudity nor much real action or violence make this pretty far from either good sci-fi or good exploitation.
Here's to the fools who dream.

10. Witchdoctor of the Living Dead (1985, Nigeria) Charles Abi Enonchong / FTV / Rating: 7+

This has all the typical technological foibles of a no-budget film including tinny sound recording, amateur acting, and frequently out-of-focus videography that often drive viewers mad (myself included), but it overcomes them with enough oddities of onscreen behavior and subject matter that I was fully engaged and entertained throughout. Among the highlights: snakes that emerge from zombie mouths, shape-shifting characters, slo-mo scenes that actually enhance the eeriness of certain events such as a grave opening and closing, odd choices of music oddly used combined with a percussive use of sound fx. Except for a scene involving animal cruelty I liked this a lot.

I watched that for the Films Directed by Women challenge, and I think I had a similar reaction to you. It was fine enough, but ultimately didn't really grab me. I had it at a 6/10,

12. Touki Bouki (Senegal 73)
I tried this sometime in the past (way pre-ICM, possibly VHS) and didn't get very far. This time I found it totally engrossing - there was lots I didn't get (sleeping on it may help) but it doesn't matter. The images, the kaleidoscope - just took it all in and savored every minute. Shows how much I've grown in my understanding of film language since joining ICM!

Week 3(ish) Stats and Challenge Update

Users
Through the 3rd week of June, we've had 21 participants in the African Challenge, and we'd still love to have more. Simba63 is off in the lead with 57 watches. Mate_cosido slipped into second place with 32 watches. jdidaco is keeping pretty close pace and is in 3rd place with 30 watches.

Leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Years
Films watched so far have ranged from 1959 to 2017, covering 53 unique years in film. 1992 is tops with 25 watches, and 1988 is right behind with 18 watches. Here's a list of watch count by decade:

Progress on Fun Bonus Collective Challenge #1: Complete the "Guide to African Cinema" official list
Through the third week of the challenge, we're nearly done with the Guide to African Cinema list (41/42) - the only film we're collectively missing is "The Battle of Algiers". Simba63 was the first to watch 16 of those films; Eve-Lang-El-Coup was the first to watch 5 of those films; 72allinncallme and flavo5000 are right behind being the first person to watch 4 of the films.

Progress on this is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Progress on Fun Bonus Collective Challenge #2: Conquer the Continent
Through the second week of the challenge, we've watched a film from about 65% of the countries in Africa (36/55). jdidaco was the first to watch a film from 11 of those countries; psychotronicbeatnik is right behind being the first to watch a film from 6 of those countries. Senegal is tops with 53 watches this month, followed by Burkina Faso with 33 watches.

Progress on this and watch counts for each country are up-to-date and maintained in the first post.
PS: Zaire = Democratic Republic of the Congo
