08. Il grido, by Michelangelo Antonioni (1957) 8/10

Beautiful film, not as abstract as his ulterior pictures, but more heartwrenching. Strongly recommended.

The humour is very much like Hot Shots! here with over-the-top pratfalls, telephone lines that defy the laws of physics and so on. The gags are very hit-and-miss and the film's entire parody of The Silence of Lambs is lacking. Half of the film though is actually a spoof of Psycho, something that works very well with Martin Balsam ("I feel like I've done this before") delightfully reprising his detective role and a hilarious cameo by the "spirit of Alfred Hitchcock".

All FTV unless stated:

5:Bloodstained Shadow (1978) 8

Caught off-guard by the producer demanding he makes a second Giallo straight away, co-writer/ (with Domenico Malan and Marisa Andalò) director
Antonio Bido decision to turn an unpublished short story from a friend of his wife into a script gives the mystery a novelistic spine, via the film being divided between clues to the killer, and a rustic slice of life, showcasing the daily rituals between Don Paolo and his flock. Whilst sadly dipping into some of the worst stereotype of the genre, (they can’t just be a killer, they have to be gay and a child abuser as well!) and going for a low body count, the writers build up the terror by going for a sub-section of Giallo based in the rural wilderness, where the viciousness of block glove murders is matched by an extremely cynical take on religion, and a dissection at the suspicions that the locals view all outsiders with.

Limiting the number of set-pieces, Bido & cinematographer Mario Vulpiani makes each of them count by expanding on the brittle mood of the script, the stylishly first-person tracking shots are lit by grisly deaths from someone getting shoved face first into a fire,to a final tribute towards Don’t Torture a Duckling. Cleverly using Murano to stand in for Venice, and having Stelvio Cipriani and Goblin both work on the great brooding score, Bido and Vulpiani give their Giallo a harsh Film Noir appearance,in thick lines of bloodstained shadows and rooms covered in decaying green creating a Jack the Ripper era vibe, along with Bido keeping the tracking shots narrow to subtly express the closed-off,isolated state of the town.

Whilst most kept from getting fully involved in the mystery, sexy Stefania Casinigives a very good performance as Sellani, who Casini uses to offer the lone glimpse of warmth in the murky Giallo waters. Unable to rub a fractured memory away,Lino Capolicchiogives a terrific performance as D'Archangelo, thanks to Capolicchio capturing D'Archangelo awkwardness as an outsider around the locals and his god-fearing brother Paolo, (played by an excellent Craig Hill) which simmers into a mature feeling of doubt over how the town is run,as D'Archangelo steps into the bloodstained shadow.

This Italian horror film is buoyed up by a nifty, gruesome twist in its final third and the carousel style sets and ghoulish stone statues are terrific throughout, but the first two thirds of the movie are tiring to sit through. Pierre Brice makes for a bland protagonist and the film approaches soap opera territory as he is torn between the artist's daughter and a childhood female friend who he bumps into along the way.

17. The Silence of the Hams (1994)
18. Mill of the Stone Women (1960)
19. The Stendhal Syndrome (1996)

This Dario Argento film is full of amazing imagery as paintings melt before the protagonist's eyes, as the camera becomes angular while she is on the phone, and as she surreally steps into a painting, plus there are effective GCI bits as bullets pass through faces and pills go down throats. The opening few minutes are especially enticing, and it is cool how the film uses Vertigo as a springboard, only to travel into even darker waters.

6: Operazione Goldman (1966) 6

Swooning into the peak of the Euro Spy years on Riz Ortolani’s colourful Jazz score, director Antonio Margheriti & cinematographer Riccardo Pallottini, (who both later reunited for Cain) investigate the spy genre with hip Pop-Art, via a glittering use of matte paintings building the underground lair of the baddie, and Sennet’s gadgets being given a kitsch appearance. Referencing their work in the Horror genre, Margheriti and Pallottini stylishly use whip-pans and zoom-ins to give the lazer burns and henchmen Sennet faces a level of threat, and blends the matte paintings with tightly held shots to give the final fight between Sennet and Rehte an exciting atmosphere.

Sending Rehte off with a baddie plan that allows the flick to chip into the Sci-Fi space craze of the era, the screenplay Alfonso Balcázar/José Antonio de la Loma and Ernesto Gastaldi smash Sennet into the mission with cheeky comedic asides that allow him to outwit the baddie and his own agency. Teaming up with fellow agent Captain Patricia Flanagan once entering Rehte’s lair, the writers give Sennet’s attempt to succeed at the mission a surprising level of menace, with the sassy one-liners being replaced with shocks of death and Sennet’s frustrations over not being able to break Rehte’s traps on his own. Joining the mission half-way,Diana Lorys gives a sparkling performance as Flanagan, thanks to Lorys giving Flanagan a mischievous edge when helping Anthony Eisley’s lean Sennet, which Lorys turns cold when she begins to fear it’s the kiss of death from (Folco Lulli’s excellent) Goldman.

This horror film begins well with a graphic witch burning ceremony and a creepy bit in which a rodent makes it seems like a skeleton is moving. The film also concludes strongly with even more haunting imagery and some bitter ironies for certain characters. The middle section is nevertheless a mess with too much murkiness as to whom certain characters are and why they are making certain decision, but overall this is still an interesting alternative to Dreyer's Day of Wrath.

7: Terror-Creatures from the Grave (1965) 5

Image

Treating producer Ralph Zucker to the “credit” as he disowned the film, director Massimo Pupillo makes his dissatisfaction visible in the first half by overlaying a dominant narration, that drains the atmosphere from the crumbling Gothic Horror set. Opening the family graves in the second half, Pupillo pulls in the Gothic chills with a clever use of roaming shadows to represent the unseen monster, and sticky, plague-ridden practical effects revealing the marks they leave behind. Not working well with the rest of the cast/crew for 4 days until Pupillo had a massive row with her in front of everyone, Barbara Steele’s more detached manner as Cleo Hauff actually works, thanks to it creating the impression of Hauff attempting to keep a dark family event secret from the creatures from the grave.

12-13. I viceré / The Viceroys (It 07, mini, 2 eps)
The miniseries (showing on Acorn media) is an interesting look at at the machinations of a Sicilian noble family to retain its power after Garibaldi's reunification of Italy (a bit of history about which I know woefully little). It is in 2 distinct parts of 90+min each - totaling ca 185m, not 120 as IMDb says. Therefore I claim 2 points but of course will defer to the host's judgment.

A pseudo-documentary on slavery in the American South. The vérité style makes the project feel unflinchingly real and memorable bits include force-fed slaves and pure irony as aristocrats make love to their slaves (as young as thirteen) while at the same time comparing them to animals. The project has the feel of a Buñuel satire at times too with Caucasian kids who want nothing more than to play with the African-Americans and an affluent household undone by too many slaves.

This mystery-thriller from the director of the similarly twisted The Best Offer begins intensely with Kafkaesque touches the protagonist is not told the nature of a crime he is accused of and as everyone acts strangely around him. The plot thickens as we find out that the victim is unknown since s/he was a shot in the face (a gun niftily fires at the camera early on). This is a very solid film with a cool ending, but between heavy dialogue and unanswered questions, I didn't love this quite as much as I hoped.
