One final update!

Image
135. Spontaneous Combustion (1990)
Brad Dourif is an orphan who's parents spontaneously combusted after being involved in a shady nuclear test and who is now experiencing strange and alarming bursts of fire from his body that seem to cause those who incur his wrath to spontaneously combust. Some cite this as lesser Tobe Hooper and while it is definitely cheesy in places (the scene in the car where it looks like fire is shooting up out of his crotch had me in stitches), it's a pretty entertaining Hooper movie with many of his trademarks including atmospheric lighting touches and a progressive escalation into batshit insanity. I mean, the ending to this made no sense, but who cares?

Image
136. The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972)
Essentially shot in a documentary style by Charles B. Pierce (of The Town That Dreaded Sundown and The Evictors), it recounts several stories of sightings of the Fouke monster in south eastern Arkansas. While certainly incredibly low budget, the use of non-actors give the movie a sense of reality to it that a slicker production might not have had. All in all, nowhere close to as bad as the sequel (featured on MST3K).

Image
137. 7 dollari sul rosso (1966) a.k.a. 7 Dollars on the Red
A group of bandits kill a man's wife and kidnaps his son, bringing him up as their own. The father spends years searching for his lost son and the gang that took him. What he doesn't realize is that the gang has raised his son to be an evil bandit as well. This was a very middle-of-the-road spaghetti western that's mostly fairly dull and aimless with a couple of nice moments of action. Not really recommended.

Image
138. Le prigioniere dell'isola del diavolo (1962) a.k.a. Women of Devil's Island
French women of ill repute or allies of revolutionaries are shipped to a prison colony on an island and forced to pan for gold in an alligator-infested swamp. When a new warden shows up promising better conditions, all is not as it seems. Much of this one plays out as an early Women-In-Prison film with lots of lurid shots of women in tight, bosom-heaving corsets and dresses hiked up above the thigh obtaining "rest" through sleeping in guards quarters. In the back half of the film, it starts to feature some swashbuckling action but feels like too little too late. Additionally the movie comes across very low budget and lacking in depth or visual panache.

Image
139. The Oblong Box (1969)
A hooded figure imprisoned in his brother's attic and buried alive seeks revenge and leaves a pile of bodies in his wake. Vincent Price doesn't chew scenery quite as intensely as usual, making for a more subdued film. The kills aren't very interesting for the most part, usually being fairly bloodless throat slitting and the twists in the plot are telegraphed pretty heavily. It was ok but nothing to write home about.

Image
140. Mudhoney (1965)
A drifter wanders into town and gets a job with a local farm. Little does he realize the massive pile of shit he just stepped into. Russ Meyers shows a love for histrionics in this tightly paced, noisy southern-fried soap opera. As Hal Hopper works himself and the other townspeople into a froth, the film leads to a grim and hysterical climax that shows a side of Russ Meyer normally hidden away beneath all the exploitation: a side that showcases a skilled director who has a solid grasp of character and plot.

37. Se sei vivo spara / Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! (Giulio Questa, 1967)

39. Ehi amico... c'è Sabata. Hai chiuso! / Sabata (Gianfranco Parolini, 1969)

Fun but ultimately fairly repetitive spaghetti with Lee Van Cleef as a gunman and possible lawman who saves a safe full of gold after it's stolen by robbers, and then has to deal with the men behind the bandits, who (naturally) are among the leaders of the town. Van Cleef is always good but it's the little details that make this one worthwhile, including the acrobats and the voluminous use of dynamite.

40. Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei / The Last Days of Pompeii (Mario Bonnard / Sergio Leone (uncredited), 1959)

One of quite a few films about the eruption of Vesuvius and destruction of the eponymous city in 79 AD, but if you missed the title and first 2-3 minutes of this you'd be forgiven for being really surprised when the eruption occurs and the last 20 minutes of the film go into disaster movie mode - there's absolutely no set-up or foreshadowing of the event whatsoever. Oh I suppose we could assume that the mountain is mad for the behavior of the Vesuvians towards the innocent Christians, about to be fed to lions for a bunch of murders and pillagings they didn't commit? That's stretching it though. Anyway this is overall a pretty ordinary and uninspired peplum with Steve Reeves as a centurion who gets mixed up in this violence and of course heroically figures out what's going on and how to stop the bad guys, just in time to run from lava. If it weren't for Leone's name there'd be no reason to see this, and frankly there's little evidence of any of the master's style, so unless you're a completist or fan of the genre, I'd say don't bother.

Thanks maxwell for a weird and cultish good challenge!
Here's to the fools who dream.

18. Slave Girls / Prehistoric Women (1967) 3/10
19. Sushi Girl (2012) 3/10
20. Killer's Moon (1978)
One of the nastier films from around this time period, as four mental patients on a drug treatment to make them think they're in a dram go on a rape and murder spree in an isolated hotel filled with "schoolgirls" (clearly actresses in their twenties wearing nighties and holding teddy-bears). It's got an appealing exploitation vibe just from the bad taste premise, but the structure and direction are lacking, and the film finds it hard to generate suspense and momentum when the violence starts.
4/10

21. Diary of a Madman (1963)
60s horror film about a demon possessing Vincent Price and forcing him to kill, clearly attempting to copy the success of Corman's Poe cycle. Price isn't at his best here, but he's still the best thing in the film, elevating it through a performance that sells the emotional complexity of the main character. Other aspects of the film fare less well: the technicolour photography looks nice but is largely point-and-shoot and the script loses the ambiguity and cosmic horror of the original short story. Still fun to watch.
5/10

22. Milano odia: la polizia non può sparare / Almost Human (1974)
Tough and compelling poliziotteschi, this must be one of the best, with a logical storyline, a completely despicable villain protagonist, good acting and a storyline packed with violence and shocking moments. The ending wasn't as satisfying as the rest of the film, but the film did a good job acting as a character study of the the villain and the detective chasing him.

Hi Maxwell. I ended up mostly focusing on the Western Challenge during May but I watched a selection of films that appear to be eligible for this one as well.

I'll list first those I watched exclusively for this challenge and then list titles I watched for the other challenges that seem eligible to me. If anyone has any qualms or reservations about any of the films in the second grouping, I shall certainly be open to discarding them from my list. The interpretation of what is a cult film is pretty subjective, I suppose.

Films I watched specifically for this challenge:

1. 'Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari' / 1920, Robert Wiene / 10/10
2. 'Shoot to Kill' / 1947, William Berke / 7/10
3. 'Gone in 60 Seconds' / 1974, H.B. Halicki / 8/10
4. 'Pandora's Mirror' / 1981, Shaun Costello / 9.5/10
5. 'D.C. Cab' / 1983, Joel Schumacher / 4/10
6. 'La Madonna des pipes' / 1983, José Bénazéraf / 6/10
7. 'Olivia' / 1983, Ulli Lommel / 9/10
8. 'Hot Shots' / 1991, Jim Abrahams / 6/10

B films, spaghetti/paella/matzo ball westerns, and cult entries:

9. 'Fighting Man of the Plains' / 1949, Edwin L. Marin / 8/10
10. 'Sierra Passage' / 1950, Frank McDonald / 9/10
11. 'Ambush at Tomahawk Gap' / 1953, Fred F. Sears / 7/10
12. 'Forty Guns' / 1957, Samuel Fuller / 8/10
13. Oregon Passage' / 1957, Paul Landres / 5.5 or 6/10
14. 'I giganti della Tessaglia' / 1960, Riccardo Freda / 8/10
15. 'Bandidos' / 1967, Massimo Dallamano / 7.5/10
16. 'Un dollaro bucato' / 'One Silver Dollar' / 1965, Giorgio Ferroni / 8/10
17. 'Ride in the Whirlwind' / 1966, Monte Hellman / 8/10
18. 'Bill il taciturno' / 'Django Kills Silently' / 1967, Massimo Pupillo / 7.5 or 8/10
19. 'Killer calibro 32' / 1967, Alfonso Brescia / 6/10
20. 'L'ultimo killer' / 'The Last Killer' / 1967, Giuseppe Vari / 6.5 or 7/10
21. 'Un dollaro tra i denti' / 'A Stranger in Town' (1967, Luigi Vanzi) - 7/10
22. 'Il dito nella piaga' / 'Salt in the Wound' (1969, Tonino Ricci) - 7.5/10
23. 'Uno straniero a Paso Bravo' / 'A Stranger in Paso Bravo' / 1968, Salvatore Rosso / 7/10
24. 'La legione dei dannati' / 'Legion of the Damned' / 1969, Umberto Lenzi / 4.5/10
25. 'Los desesperados' / 'A Bullet for Sandoval' / 1969, Julio Buchs / 6/10
26. 'Il prezzo del potere' / 'The Price of Power' (1969, Tonino Valerii) - 7.5/10
27. 'More Dead Than Alive' / 1969, Robert Sparr / 7 or 7.5/10
28. 'Soldier Blue' / 1970, Ralph Nelson / 8.5/10
29. 'Django's Cut Price Corpses' / 'A Pistol for Django' / 1971, Luigi Batzella / 2/10
30. 'El hombre de Río Malo' / 'Bad Man's River' / 1971, Eugenio Martín / 6/10
31. 'W Django!' / 'A Man Called Django!' / 1971, Edoardo Mulargia / 7/10
32. 'La banda J. & S. - Cronaca criminale del Far West' / 'Sonny & Jed' / 1972, Sergio Corbucci / - 8/10
33. 'Una colt in mano a diavolo' / 'Colt in the Hand of the Devil' / 1973, Gianfranco Baldanello / 5/10
34. 'Kid Vengeance' / 1977, Joseph Manduke / 6.5/10

As I said, I'm open to removing problematic titles.

Thanks for hosting a wonderful challenge, Maxwell!

I'll sign off on this one with the poster to Shaun Costello's exquisite, sensuous, and compelling 'Pandora's Mirror'. Probably the greatest adult film I've seen and a dazzling highlight to my challenge!

36. Starship Eros (1980)

This was just porn. But with a plot, and is one of the few porn movies I've actually watched all the way through. Not good, but naked people, so yay?

37. Humanoids from the Deep (1980)

Fairly fun monster movie. I was really excited about the Olympic beer they were drinking, since that's mostly available west coast US.

38. Les Diaboliques (1955)

Hell of a tension build and a great ending. Managed to sneak this one in in time for the French poll.

39. Hollywood High (1976)

This was just a complete failure of a film. At 80 minutes, it was grossly overlong, since at least 1/3 of the film was them going places. And for a sexploitation film, it didn't have good sexploitation - some really sex bad puns and some poorly framed nudity. And the Fonz ripoff was annoying.

Hey peeps,

Thanks for the rec on The Third Eye. It was great. I especially liked the camerawork - the tight, gritty close-ups of objects like the brake lines being cut or the bird being disemboweled that gave it a very visceral feel. The fisheye lens shots depicting madness were also great. I cannot recall ever seeing Franco Nero in another role like this - filmed the same year as Django!
Glad you liked it beatnik and we rated it the same... I liked the camera work as well, and the aforementioned stabbing scene was very tense. That entire scene when she is struggling to get to the phone and it inter-cuts with scenes of Nero in the car was fantastic imho. That was my favorite sequence of the film and yeah, I'd never seen Nero in anything else quite like this one either (though he was fantastic as an alcoholic womanizer in Fifth Cord) it was worthwhile for that too!

I don't think I've ever seen Nero as clean shaven either - he often looked polished in the close-ups (probably intentional).

The sequence you mention - cross-cutting between the car and the phone may have been my favorite as well. There are a lot of great scenes to choose from. I actually found myself thinking of Hitchcock a few times.

See you in the 80's?!

I've been looking back through my list of viewings for the Western Challenge and there are three other ones I saw that strike me as potentially eligible for this Cult/Drive-In/Grindhouse Challenge. Can I leave it to your discretion whether or not to count these towards my total?

35. 'Nevada' / 1944, Edward Killy / 7/10 (RKO B western programmer with a young Robert Mitchum)
36. 'Fort Massacre' / 1958, Joseph M. Newman / 7.5/10 (''B-plus'' revenge western helmed by cult director Newman)
37. 'Man from God's Country' / 1958, Paul Landres / 5/10 (B western, but it's in colour)

I think 'Nevada' should be OK. Not all that sure about the other two, though.

Thanks again, Max. I had a blast with the challenges last month!

1. Il grande silenzio [The Great Silence] (1968) - 7.4 - also Italian and western challenges
2. Fubar (2002) - 7.0
3. Mad Max (1979) - 7.0
4. Faccia a faccia [Face to Face] (1967) - 7.4 - also Italian and western challenges
5. The Dresser (1983) - 8.0
6. The Little Princess (1939) - 7.6
7. Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. [The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari] (1920) - 7.4
8. Johnny Guitar (1954) - 7.8 - also western challenge
9. Ang Napakaigsing Buhay Ng Alipato [Alipato: The Very Brief Life of an Ember] (2016) - 5.8
10. Night Tide (1961) - 7ish

Also started A Long Ride From Hell but didn't finish yet.

Wasn't expecting this to be my best challenge of the month, but perhaps it's because such a wide range of films are considered 'cult' by different groups.

I ran out of steam, so nothing more to add for me.

Thanks for hosting, Max.

[Thanks for the reminder, 72allinncallme]

Final Results!

Congrats to flavo5000 on the win this month! And nice work to jdidaco for coming in 2nd and racking up 110 watches this month. The race for 3rd place was actually pretty fascinating to watch in the last couple days of the month; frbrown ultimately took 3rd with 85 watches, with Simba63 and psychotronicbeatnik following with 84 and 83, respectively. OldAle1 wins the "doodiehead" award for beating me by one watch. :whistling:

Overall, great participation this month with 35 participants and 1079 watches. Results below and updated in the OP.

Thanks for hosting maxwelldeux! Looks like psychotronicbeatnik are running away from everyone on the overall leaderboard.

Whoa, congrats to flavo and jd on racking up 140 and 110 watches respectively. I had something of a headache at the end of May from watching 84 features for the Western Challenge. Incredible numbers from these two redoubtable champions!
That's all, folks!
