1. Keoma - 4/10 I find spaghetti westerns to be particularly bad. Starting with partial or full dubbing and the horrible situations. This dealt with racist characters and I am not into shootouts or violence, so I really hated this.
2. Una pistola per Ringo 5/10 - Not into the violence and rape and the main character who was just a mercenary.
3. Multiple Maniacs https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/multiple-maniacs/
4. Kyûketsuki hantâ D (1985) Cult list - 4/10 Not that interesting and a couple of things that make it inappropriate for children.
5. Maniac Cop (1988) 5/10 Pretty cheap thrills and second-rate acting. Okay at best.
6. Serial Mom (1994) Rewatch - midnight movie showing https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/serial-mom/1/
7. THX 1138 (1971) Cult
8. Bandidos (1967) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
9. Il grande duello (1972) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
10. Never Give a Sucker an Even Break - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics (unofficial)+ Weird list (official) - 6/10 - W.C. Fields is zany as always. It may not be his best film. Although it appears on the weird list, it’s not that unusual. Pretty random, though.
11. Ghosts... of the Civil Dead (1988) John Hillcoat is not the director for me. I have really disliked all the films I’ve seen by him, so I’m going to avoid his work in the future.
12. Das Experiment (2001) 5.5/10 I like this type of thing usually, but films like Experimenter
13. Xia dao Gao Fei/Full Contact (1992) - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics list - Didn’t like the portrayal of women or the violence, so despite liking Chow Yun-Fat for some other movies he’s done, this wasn’t for me.
14. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) 500+ Essential Cult Movies - 5/10 This is pretty bad, but Tina Turner's presence is worth watching it for. She's not an actress, but rather a huge personality. Throw in a crash or two and then you have this movie. The song for the closing credits said, “We don’t need another hero”, but perhaps, we don’t need another Mad Max.
15. Dio perdona... Io no!/God Forgives I Don't (1967) 5/10 was going okay until the violence toward women.
16. I crudeli/The Hellbenders (1967) 6.5/10 This was one of the better spaghetti westerns I’ve seen all month. Finally, a decent female character.
17. Arise! The SubGenius Video (1992) 5.6/10 Weird list / The mindfuck movie list - This was pretty weird, of course.
18. Knightriders (1981) - 5/10 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/knightriders/
19. Navajo Joe (1966)
20. Night Tide (1961) VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics 7/10 - It’s been on my watchlist a LONG time, perhaps around 10 years. MUBI was streaming this. We get to see a young Dennis Hopper. It unfolds like a normal movie, then takes crazy, wild turns.
21. Prega il morto e ammazza il vivo/To Kill a Jackal (1971) 2/10 Klaus Kinski is just so despicable.
22. El precio de un hombre/The Bounty Killer (1966) 5/10

33. The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)

This was weird, but definitely enjoyable. A draughtsman is hired by a wealthy 17th century woman to sketch her estate in exchange for board, money, and pleasures. But then he uncovers a murder. And with that, you get the fun interplay between the stuffy upper-crust of British society and baser sexual desires. Might merit a rewatch to look for some of the details that escape the first viewing.

34. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008)

Rewatch. Background noise while I was doing other stuff. It mostly manages to recapture the magic of the first one, though not fully. I did like that it was a continuation of the story, like from the moment the prior movie ended. Some laughs, but not exactly a classic.

35. The Hateful Eight (2015)

I can't quite put my finger on this, but it didn't work for me. I thought the pacing was off, and the tension didn't build the way it could have with a little faster movie. And I definitely understand the criticisms about it being a stage play, as I wanted more scenery in the film.

I'll Grind Your House to Make My CultShow
1. Il figlio di Spartacus / The Slave / The Son of Spartacus (Sergio Corbucci, 1962)
2. Une corde, un colt... / Cemetery Without Crosses (Robert Hossein, 1969)
3. Il ritorno di Ringo / The Return of Ringo (Duccio Tessari, 1965)
4. Hundra (Matt Cimber, 1983)
5. The Gold Diggers (Sally Potter, 1983)
6. Una pistola per Ringo / A Pistol for Ringo (Duccio Tessari, 1965)
7-18. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 Episodes 1-12 (roughly 6th viewing or so)
7. "When She Was Bad"
8. "Some Assembly Required"
9. "School Hard"
10 "Inca Mummy Girl"
11. "Reptile Boy"
12. " Halloween"
13. "Lie to Me"
14. "The Dark Age"
15-16. "What's My Line"
17. "Ted"
18. "Bad Eggs" -

19. The Keep (Michael Mann, 1983) (re-watch)
20. Navajo Joe (Sergio Corbucci, 1966)

Early Burt Reynolds starring vehicle with the (supposedly) part-Cherokee actor playing the eponymous character, who involves himself in saving a town's money for the ulterior motive of revenge on the robbers, who had massacred his whole tribe in the opening scene. This has some good action sequences, particularly Joe's single-handed takeover of the train from a dozen bandits, the usual fine music from maestro Morricone, and Reynolds' charisma, but it doesn't quite add up to anything beyond decent-to-good, mostly because the plotting is fairly silly and there aren't any characters to speak of. Which I guess makes it fairly typical, but I expected a little more out of Corbucci.

21. La ville de pirates / City of Pirates (Raoul Ruiz, 1983)

A typically fascinating, often humorous helping of surrealism from the director's most fertile period, this doesn't quite measure up with his best IMO. We have the usual - if anything can be usual in the world of Ruiz - semi-incoherent plot that takes place in large part in the world of dreams, a young woman escaping her horny stepfather with an enigmatic and much too mature adolescent boy who may or may not be a mass-murderer to the title location - which isn't really a city, and has no pirates. It's beautiful and weird and very hard to describe now, just a few days after I saw it, like much of Ruiz' best work, but this one didn't really start to gel for me until the last half hour or so. I'm sure another viewing will help... someday.

22. La belle captive / The Beautiful Prisoner (Alain Robbe-Grillet, 1983)

I never was a part of the R-G cult that persisted for a couple of years on IMDb's Film General, a decade or so ago; for one thing, I didn't have ready access to the films at the time, and I suppose it wasn't a priority to get to them - the one film I had seen, Un bruit qui rend fou, hadn't done so much for me when I'd seen it new, and there is always too much French cinema to explore. But I've seen a few films in the last decade now, and while not yet a partisan, I'm at least interested in continuing the journey, and this is probably my favorite yet. This took me immediately into the realm of dream in a way that the previous film by Ruiz did not, and while it might be said that R-G sticks to somewhat more conventional psycho-sexual tropes and imagery - and references familiar figures like Magritte - this just kept me thoroughly entertained from the get-go, and the dreams-within-dreams never got old and I never much cared whether or not I was being taken for a ride that would provide more than just the lovely surfaces and striking moments.

23. Blindman (Ferdinando Baldi, 1971)

Tony Anthony is the eponymous character, a blind gunman no doubt created to cash in on the popularity of the Japanese Zatoichi films - Italian genre filmmakers never let a popular series or idea go un-ripped-off. It's an amusing concept but unfortunately it's played straight here, and without explanation - Blindman is just able to shoot better than most sighted persons, for some reason, and that's supposed to be enough to make a movie. Well, it is a movie, but not a good one; even the presence of Ringo Starr as one of the main bad guys doesn't do much to enliven this rather dull piece of pasta. It doesn't even have a Morricone score!

27-30. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 Episodes 13-16 (6th viewings, probably)

27. "Surprise"
28. "Innocence" - 2-parter where we find out the mystery of Jenny Calendar, her connection to Angel, and who the Big Bad for the season is really going to be. I sort of wish The Judge had been around longer, I get the sense they could have developed some comic potential, but seeing Buffy with the rocket launcher is one of the highlights of the season - and the emotional power of these episodes and most of the rest of the season really brings the show up.
29. "Phases" - Oz - werewolf, Oz and Willow. Yes, another take on classic monster movie tropes but this time it's one of the gang! Or will be.
30. "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" - after some development for Willow, we get some for Xander and Cordelia, a backfiring love spell, and the return of Amy - a minor but actually quite important character in terms of her influence on the rest of the show.

31. Prega il morto e ammazza il vivo / Renegade Gun / Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (Giuseppe Vari, 1971)

Sometimes the titles are the best things about spaghettis; in this case while the film doesn't quite live up to the coolness of it's name, we have a pretty solid and vicious two-part western. The first half is all closed-in, an isolated telegraph station where outlaws and innocent stage passengers gather, with the vicious Dan Hogan (Klaus Kinski) keeping everyone under his thumb - for most of the time. He needs to get across the border into Mexico, but he needs to find the right pass, and it turns out that only John Webb (Paolo Casella) can help him - but Webb has ulterior motives. Once the group get going it becomes a chase/survival western, with desert, quicksand, and an Army contingent all threatening the band of outlaws and captives, which slowly gets whittled down. It's ultimately a little more conventional than it promises at first sight but this is solid enough work and Kinski, the Nic Cage of his day, is as wild and crazy as usual.

32. I predatori di Atlantide / The Raiders of Atlantis (Ruggero Deodato, 1983)

Listed as an Italian/Filipino production, this has an almost entirely Italian crew and secondary supporting cast, but was I assume mostly filmed in the Philippines, with the primary lead actors (Christopher Connelly and Tony King) Americans. It's one of those cheesy 80s ripoffs that the Italians excelled in, in this case mostly being reminiscent of Mad Max (the "raiders" who all appear to be post-apoc bikers), with some elements of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Death Wish and various other hits of the era. It also reminded me at times in the second half of The Six Million Dollar Man; something about the particular tone and cheesiness seemed reminiscent of the Bigfoot episodes on that series. And like the same year's Il mondo di Yor, it starts out as one kind of adventure and ends up as science fiction by the finish. Hard to explain the plot very simply or cogently (hell, the film doesn't try to, why should I?) but basically Atlantis, populated by savages with modern American tech, comes back to the surface after a submarine gets raised by an exploration team, the Atlanteans decide to raid a small island (I think - maybe it's supposed to be mainland Florida? who knows) , slaughter everybody, and then are attacked by the good guys who figure out where the angry hordes are from, and go to Atlantis to stop it. It's pretty whacked, terrible by most standards I suspect, but I kind of loved it.

33. Hercules (Luigi Cozzi, 1983)

And I kind of loved this one too, though I'm overall less enamored of barbarian films than of post-apocalyptic fantasy-sci-fi. And the utter cheapness of the effects (except for the stop-motion stuff which is kind of cool) and abysmal acting do get in the way here - but not so much that it isn't still fun. There's a good 10 minutes of portentously-voiced exposition about how the gods and man were created, and why Zeus created Hercules (they mix up Greek and Latin names all over here, what do you expect), and then we get Lou Ferrigno as out muscle-man, having his adoptive parents slain in the next few minutes and going on to avenge them and eventually win the beauteous Cassiopeia. The bear fight is one of the worst things ever - until ol' Herc tosses the defeated ursine into the stars, as he does with a couple of others foes later in the film. Bad fun all around.

34. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (Stephen Chiodo, 1988)

I don't know why, but I expected great things from this - I suppose it's the title, or maybe distant memories of somebody(ies) I trusted raving about it, but this turned out to be rather a disappointment. Really a one-joke flick - there's this town, there are evil creatures from space that not only look like clowns but act like them - fire popcorn guns, envelop people in cotton candy, laugh insane laughs, etc, and our fairly bloodless young heroes have to stop them. That's it. John Vernon is on hand as the total asshole cop who doesn't believe (or care) what's happening, and he's pretty amusing, and the production design is pretty awesome, but this felt long at just under 90 minutes.

I assume Killer Klowns is #34, right?

PS: That's a disappointing review for that one... I'd been low-key excited about it.

Fixed. Yes, disappointing. Especially given the era - so much of what is "cool' in the context of drive-in/cult/cheese to me is from the 80s; I was just out of college in 88 and this seems like the perfect movie from that era, at least a perfect example of stuff I'm looking for that I hadn't seen yet. But it just failed to excite me; sure on the whole it's better made than Hercules but to me it just got dull eventually, at least all the scenes that aren't in the clown tent/spaceship were dull. Great color and makeup though - not a total loss.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Nope, they are each a different character in their respective films; I mainly tried to find two pics that were similar, but the scenes are different... and there are some differences between the two, but the basic plot is the same and D'Amato acknowledged his as a remake. Anyhow, in particular I rec The Third Eye, beatnik. I liked it more than I anticipated and you might dig it. :)
Thanks peeps! You did a great job of finding matching shots anyway. I've added both of these to my watchlist and will keep my "Third Eye" peeled for them.

See, I personally really enjoy Killer Klowns from Outer Space. It makes for a great party movie. Get a bunch of friends over, get some popcorn and let the movie do its magic.

All FTV unless stated:

22: Death Knocks Twice (1969)6

Image

Swimming in the final era of pre-Dario Argento Gialli with a smooth 007-style title track, co-writer/(with Sergio Garrone and Mario di Nardo) director Harald Philipp travels to a similar shore of the blissfully bonkers 1969 Giallo Top Sensation in his adaptation of Max Pierre Schaeffer’s book , via the jet-set bourgeoisie getting sliced in cruise-ships, property deals and the haunted eyes from a painting. Whilst the threads over what is Bob Martin’s (what a memorable name!) main goal to solve becomes jumbled, the writers make up for it with a frantic chase final, which wonderfully grills the Giallo hatred of the upper-class with a sprint of murders.

Holding the diamonds with an oddly tastefully done sex/murder opening,Philipp & cinematographer Claudio Racca set the jet-set Giallo class sailing with slick whip-pans that close in on the murderous, back-stabbing deals.Racing to solve the cases, Philipp rolls out funny, over the top, screeching car chases, and lively fights,shoot-outs to the black gloves. Showing little of the charisma he displays in music, Dean Reed appears ill at ease over leading the movie as Martin. Grabbing the screen as Reed lets it go,Fabio Testi gives a great creepy performance as body building hunk Villaverde, who is given a bitter creepiness by Testi, whilst Nadja Tiller and Anita Ekberg give a seductiveness as Maria and Ferretti,as death begins to knock.

128. Desperate Living (1977)
Mike Stole plays an insane housewife who hates her family, murders her husband and flees to a weird community ruled by the domineering Edith Massey. What follows is exactly what you'd expect in a John Waters movie. I enjoy John Waters movies pretty well but this one comes off a little more shrill and obnoxious than a lot of them. I think it may be partially because in absence of Divine, he includes more Edith Massey. And She's really the kind of character that needs to be taken in smaller doses. Also there's a whole sex change and prosthetic dick chopping subplot that's just really WTF.

Image
129. What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966)
Woody Allen takes a Japanese spy thriller and overdubs all the voices, turning it into a nonsensical comedy about stealing an egg salad recipe. As one would expect, the jokes in this one are very hit or miss with some chuckleworthy lines and gags and some just straight up stupid unfunny stuff that's just silly for no reason (like the ending scene with the plane taking off).

Image
130. The Outsiders (1983)
Holy cow... So many famous people in this pre-fame: Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrcik Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez... Hell, they even got Tom Waits in there somewhere. The movie itself involves (in case you weren't forced to read the book in high school) a teen named Pony Boy and his friend Johnny who like to hang out with Ponyboy's brother Dal and the Greasers gang. But after an altercation with a rival gang leads Johnny to knife a rival gang member to death, Dal helps Ponyboy and Johnny skip town to let the heat die down for a while. But deep-seated beefs don't die overnight... Honestly it was ok but certainly not one of Coppola's best. The narrative is overly heavy handed in places and despite the cast, some of the acting is not great.

Image
131. La rossa dalla pelle che scotta (1982) a.k.a. The Red-Headed Corpse
Farley Granger is an artist who may or may not hallucinate one day that one of his mannequins comes to life and begins growing increasingly unstable. This one was an odd bird with Granger slumming it in a mediocre thriller that while having a fairly interesting plot just fails to hold my attention even a little. Special mention must be made of the inappropriately cheesy soundtrack in places that comes off more like a 60's travel ad than a thriller.

Inspired by the same short story as the 1934 film of the same name, though both have little to do with Edgar Allan Poe's tale. Among the pluses here are a gruesome impalement, a graphic burning alive and a pre-Poltergeist bed that levitates in the wind. This is a lot less gore than Fulci par though and the frantic close-ups used to try to make the cat menacing are frankly quite laughable. The cat point-of-view and close-ups of Patrick Magee's eyes are great though and Pino Donaggio's music nicely channels Psycho without being too similar.

And I'll be watching it later today. Thanks, peeps!

A friend loaned me Italian Gothic Horror Films 1957-1969 by Roberto Curti and this one is in there. I've gotten more obsessed with that sub-genre as a result of this book so I've tried to cram in quite a few this month. My available FTVs in the genre were running low so The Third Eye comes along at a perfect time.

Another one of Warhol's supreme trolls, we have about an hour worth of people making out in silence. That is literally it. Even at this short, it comes off as tedious and poorly framed. It really makes me have less than zero interest in watching more extended exercises in trolling like Empire.

133. The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle (2009)
Dory loses his maddening office job and takes up employment with a research company as a janitor. One day, he and his fellow janitors are invited to be part of a focus group for self-heating cookies. Unfortunately for them, it affects men in a very unusual way. I had fun with this one with its unconventional plot, surprisingly decent acting from the leads and oddball visual cues. It seems overly obtuse in a few places, especially the end, but overall for such a weird movie its quite watchable and easy to follow.

134. Idioterne (1998) a.k.a. The Idiots
A group of intellectuals decide to pretend to be mentally handicapped in various situations just to make everyone around them uncomfortable. And once again, Lars Von Trier shows how he's the heir apparent of film trolling, perhaps taking up the mantle in Warhol's absence. Regardless of his motivations, the movie is crude, both visually (following dogme 95) and thematically. It employs several different shock tactics. In addition to the aforementioned mocking of the disabled, he's also got graphic, unsimulated hardcore penetration and a grim, emotionally raw ending that feels out of nowhere from everything preceding it. Like other Von Trier films, I think you probably know what you are getting into going into this.

As an all-time favourite featured on multiple Cult and Western lists, I couldn't pass up the chance to revisit Badlands this month. The film features some simply breathtaking images - especially as they fly into the clouds that they earlier admired at the end - however, it is as a deeply philosophical project that Badlands works best for me, from Kit's stance that they will eventually need to "take the consequences and not whine about it later" to Holly's contemplating of "where would I be this very moment" had she not met him, the film paints a very true picture of two impetuous individuals just trying to live life to the fullest without knowing where they are headed next. And there is something very appealing about this, even if we know deep down inside that they will eventually have to face the 'real' world. Really love the music here too.

33. Hercules (Luigi Cozzi, 1983)
34. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (Stephen Chiodo, 1988)
35 E Dio disse a Caino... / And God Said to Cain (Antonio Margheriti, 1970)

Excited to see this because of the director, who has become a low-rent favorite for me in much the way Roger Corman has; this is the first of Margheriti's westerns I've seen though, so I didn't know what to expect. As it turns out, the progressive political elements visible in his sci-fi/fantasy stuff are nowhere in evidence here, nor is there really much of the male camaraderie -- but this doesn't matter too much, as this extraordinarily simple revenge western packs plenty of pure entertainment regardless of it's almost content-free and nearly plot-free character. Klaus Kinski gets released after 10 years of wrongful imprisonment, sets out to avenge himself, more or less wipes out whole town. That's it, but the way Margheriti uses the space of the town and Kinski's implacable Terminator-like performance make the film lots of fun if watching a guy shoot up a town for an hour and a half is your thing. I guess it's mine.

36 Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo / The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (probably 4th or 5th viewing)

I had to have one truly great watch for this challenge, and it didn't happen with any of the first-time views, so given that I just got the new Koch Lorber 50th anniversary disc, this was an obvious choice. I also hadn't seen it for about 12-15 years, and the last time I watched it I saw the longer Euro cut - which I found a little less impressive than my memories of the 162 minute version. Thankfully the new release has both edits and I chose the shorter, though at some point I'm sure I'll watch both back-to-back just to be able to be fair to both. In any case, I had a blast with this and I won't wait a decade or more for another viewing this time. Eli Wallach's Tucco remains one of the greatest performances/characters in all of cinema - not just westerns - and the film never feels long or flags for a moment thanks to the beautifully choreographed narrative movements between violence, humor and (very occasionally) sentiment and drama. Certainly Leone's funniest film, and probably the high point in the career of Lee Van Cleef, even if neither he nor Eastwood get nearly as many juicy moments as Wallach does. I still prefer the director's next western, and his epic gangster saga, in large part because they are about things beyond themselves; when all is said and done, there isn't a whole lot to think about or take away from this one. A shallow epic, really - but one of the greatest and most stylish shallow epics ever, and even with that significant flaw, a masterpiece.

37. Se sei vivo spara / Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! (Giulio Questa, 1967)

This has a reputation as one of the weirder and wilder spaghettis, and I suppose it is, though it's moments of surrealism and what the...? moments really don't do much to disguise the fact that it kind of boils down to another Yojimbo rip-off, only with our hero the stranger (Tomas Milian) this time getting three rival factions to wipe each other out, not just two. Oh and it's also a revenge - maybe revenant - story as our hero was apparently killed for gold and has come back, with the help of a Greek chorus of two enigmatic Indians to help him in his quest to get back the gold or at least kill those responsible for his death and those of his fellow workers - all Indians and half-breeds. So there's a racial component here two, as the three greedy leaders of the various groups that have taken (or are trying to take) the gold are all white, but not a lot is done with this. More colorful than most Italian westerns, and quite dynamic in it's action scenes and surreal flashbacks, this nevertheless feels a little long (in the almost 2-hour Italian cut I watched) and it doesn't quite add up to what initial scenes seemed to promise. Still a lot of fun and one of the better spaghettis I watched this month.

38. Una sull'atra / One on Top of the Other / Perversion Story (Lucio Fulci, 1969)

I watched this mostly because I'd heard it has some references to / points in common with Vertigo, and indeed it does in the most obvious senses - it's shot mostly in San Francisco, and the basic plot involves a man (a famous doctor in this case) thinking he's seeing a ghost, his recently dead wife, in this case in the form of an exotic dancer. Because y'know, it's the swinging 60s now, we gotta have sex. There's also a second woman who is in love with the doctor (the Barbara Bel Geddes character in Vertigo) and there's a certain amount of following and stalking, though not as much as in the Hitch film - but beyond that this probably has more in common with swinging 60s mysteries or oddities like Blow Up - and indeed photography and the solving of a crime feature more prominently in the last third of the film here. It doesn't really all gel IMO but the SF locations, Marisa Mell in the double role, and the bright primary colors all make it worth a watch for sure.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Hey peeps,

Thanks for the rec on The Third Eye. It was great. I especially liked the camerawork - the tight, gritty close-ups of objects like the brake lines being cut or the bird being disemboweled that gave it a very visceral feel. The fisheye lens shots depicting madness were also great. I cannot recall ever seeing Franco Nero in another role like this - filmed the same year as Django!

Thanks for hosting Maxwell (and to sol for helping out with the updates). I was planning to watch a few more tonight but decided to get some sleep instead so this is my final post.

All my watches for this challenge were Italian - in fact, every movie I watched this month was either a triple or a double except for an Italian doco on Bruno Bozzetto that just didn't feel like it fit in cult. If only it had been called Mondo Bozzetto!
