This was a fun double bill-

15. The Third Eye (1966) 8 - the *stabbing* scene and its aftermath is fantastic in this one, and "Django" never looked so good. ;)

Image

16. Beyond the Darkness (1979) 7*- figured I would rewatch D'Amato's remake and it's still as sleazy and nauseating as ever.

08. Willard, by Daniel Mann (1971) 7/10

Some nice ideas, but overall not very well done...

09. Ben, by Phil Karlson (1972) 5/10

Not a very good sequel... The scenes with the kid are pretty lame... Still, who'd have thought such a movie would issue a Michael Jackson song that ran for the Academy Award, as well as a huge hit ? I'd never have thought the Ben from the song was a rat !! :P

103. The Love Witch (2016)
A woman decides to become a witch after being left by her husband and conjures up some powerful love potions that work all too well on a string of suitors. The Love Witch hearkens back to the 60's in multiple ways: from the sumptuous technicolors visuals to the brief but prevalent trend of witch-themed movies (Witchfinder General, Burn Witch Burn, Black Sunday, etc.) to the extended discussions of female body politics. It's low budget, amateurish origins really only show in the stilted acting and clunky scripting (and even that could be intentional or at least intended to be perceived as intentional). Overall, it was an interesting watch.

Image
104. El ataque de los muertos sin ojos (1973) a.k.a. Return of the Blind Dead
The blind dead Templar Knights who were burned alive long ago return to terrorize the inhabitants of a small village. I'm really not sure how this one relates to the first movie other than the blind dead themselves. Regardless, while the design of the Templar knights is still solid like the first one, this one seems to rob the narrative of much of its gothic eeriness by putting them on horseback and having them clanging around swinging swords and causing a ruckus, a far cry from the doom-filled mist of the initial outing. While it lacks in subtlety in comparison to its predecessor, it probably has a little more forward momentum to it. Overall, not an amazing movie.

Image
105. Strange Behavior (1981) a.k.a. Dead Kids
Mysterious seemingly-related murders have been cropping up all over a small town in the midwest but what do a group of teenagers who have been experimented on have to do with it? If you guessed 'a lot', you'd be correct. While it dragged a little in places, it was actually not half bad. The skill behind the camera is pretty obvious and the script seemed a little smarter than the usual early 80's horror flick. Plus you've got delights such a a syringe the eye and pissing blood insanity that'll leave a lasting impression.

Image
106. The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (1988)
A boy in the 14th century has bizarre visions of the future and leads a group of villagers to attempt to dig a hole through the world to escape the plague. Instead they end up traveling trough time to the present where their terror is only beginning. This was an interesting one. With a fish out of water premise normally reserved for wacky comedies, The Navigator takes a much more serious approach to the subject matter, illustrating the panic and fear that such a travel would actually bring about. Everything around them is a threat. Nothing makes sense. I liked this one a lot.

All FTV's unless stated:

18: A Simple Plan (1998) 10

Image

A less than simple time in pre and post-production, ( Ben Stiller, John Boorman, Mike Nichols and John Dahl were all set to direct at various times, and the original studio going bust)director Sam Rami and cinematographer Alar Kivilo makes all these problems melt with a frosty Neo-Noir atmosphere. Advised on how to film in snow by friends the Coen brothers, Rami and Kivilo make the small town feel mercilessly cold to any attempt the trio make to keep the cash secret,as the overcast sombre skies and mountains of pure snow lights up any drop of blood that the trio spill. Following their first team-up on Darkman, Rami and Kivilo free up their excellent simmering pans across the doubtful faces of the trio with composer Danny Elfman’s (who later married co-star Bridget Fonda) slow-burn score igniting at each wrong turn of the plan, that sends shivers down the score, and darting tracking shots following the ravens of death.

Adapting his screenplay into a novel whilst long delays took place, (which by chance,is also what John Steinbeck did with The Pearl) this process by writer Scott B. Smith gives the relationships an incredible emotional depth, with Hank’s touching protection for Jacob recalling George and Lennie in Of Mice And Men. Pulling a black bag of Neo-Noir trouble out of a plane,Smith brilliantly agitates the trust between the trio with glances and misplaced words to the locals building up intense friction and doubt between the loyal guys. Going against Lou’s wishes by telling his wife,Smith makes the bond between Hank and Sarah be one that dips into Femme Fatale waters, via Sarah’s influence guiding Hank to be the dominant one of the trio, but also rooting in him questions over the reliability of his friends, until a poetic Noir ending where Hank burns Sarah’s influence away.

Mistrusting Hank from the moment they pull out the cash, Brent Briscoe gives an excellent performance as Lou,whose short-fuse Briscoe uses to keep the other guys on edge over fear of a deadly outburst. Uncomfortable even touching the money,Bill Paxton gives a great performance as Hank, with Paxton bringing timidness in Hank’s interactions with Bridget Fonda’s thoughtful, ambitious Sarah, and a brittle loyalty to Lou and Jacob that Paxton uses to dig Hank into becoming a Noir loner. Fighting to hold the friendships together, Billy Bob Thornton gives an outstanding performance as Jacob, whose sincere, simplistic view on how they can handle the cash Thornton holds to remain firm, even as the plan turns out to be less than simple.

Vincent Ward is an underappreciated director with an often offbeat vision. The Navigator is his best film but Vigil, Map of the Human Heart and What Dreams May Come are all worth seeking out.

I've seen What Dreams May Come, and while I wouldn't say it was 100% successful, it definitely had some very creative ideas of the afterlife.

112. Innocence (2004)
A coffin arrives at a girls school seemingly cut off from society. The girls open the coffin to find another little girl inside who they greet with open arms. Very adults are around, teaching them ballet, butterfly mating habits and grooming them for the day the headmistress will come and take them away. It's all very mysterious and vaguely unsettling although I can't really put my finger on why. The movie is very languidly paced with a very dreamlike flow of narrative logic. It gave off similar vibes to Picnic at Hanging Rock which gives you a pretty good indication of how much you'll enjoy it.

Image
113. Luther the Geek (1990)
A mass murderer as a child sees a carnival geek doing his thang and becomes inspired. Cut to present where the psycho is out of prison, outfitted with some snazzy metal teeth and begins terrorizing innocent folks just going about their daily business. I actually ended up liking this one. While the Troma logo setup expectations of something more along the line of Rabid Grannies from a couple days ago, Luther the Geek actually builds suspense pretty well with much of the film eschewing dialogue for long, tense sequences of Luther stalking his human prey, the only sound to be heard is his incessant clucking.

Image
114. Amanti d'oltretomba (1965) a.k.a. Nightmare Castle
A slaughter wife and her lover come back from the dead for revenge against her husband who tortured them before murdering them. While Barbara Steele looks as sexy as usual, I found the movie to be a little on the dull side until toward the end. While it does drum up some nice gothic horror ambiance, in part from Morricone's score, it's just not as good as Antonio Margheriti's gothic horror flicks like Long Hair of Death and Castle of Blood.

Hi JD,I hope you have a good weekend, and with your pic of the ladies with a nice pair of..eyes,I was wondering what the two films are like?

Thanks.

They're great! They belong to the Wakamatsu/Adachi school of 1969, which means disaffected youth, sexual violent urges as radical acts of individuality, as forms of interpersonal communication, as political statements, and often contradictory ruptures with the system. They burst with energy and sensuality, mix the carnal and the delirious, laughter and sadness, the quiet and the chaotic.

17. Boy Eats Girl (2005)
One of the first rom-zom-coms to be released in the wake of Shaun of the Dead (coming out 17 months later). It owes an equally large debt to My Boyfriend's Back. Suffers from heavy-handed characterisation and a lack of almost any working jokes but does have quite a few good splatter scenes of zombie vs. human carnage.

18. Slave Girls / Prehistoric Women (1967)
A Great White Hunter in Africa gets transported back in time to Hammer's "prehistoric" universe. Despite explicitly being set in ancient sub-Saharan Africa, the world is populated mostly by white girls wearing fur bikinis and hairspray. Unlike the more famous One Million Years B.C., from which this reuses the sets, there are no dinosaurs and no location shooting. According to IMDb reviews this has a cult following as a bad movie due to the idiotic plot and scantily clad women, but apart from Beswick's scenery-chewing performance I found it to be dull.

19. Sushi Girl (2012)
Such a blatant Tarantino rip-off that I felt embarrassed for the director at times. You'll know the story: set mainly in a single room with occassional flashbacks to a diamond heist they committed, a group of quirky criminals squabble and violently harm each other. Unlike Reservoir Dogs, where the dialogue and characters were fascinating and well-written, here they feel tiresome and irrelevant. Oh, there is one big difference to Reservoir Dogs: there's a naked girl who spends the movie lying in the centre of the room with sushi on her body, a nonsensical addition to the narrative that is clear from the start is there to enable a lame "twist" at the end.

Listed in the Rough Guide to Cult Movies. Much of this film revolves around the modern cowboy protagonist's longing for the borderless plains of yesterday and yet constantly confined by modern structures. As per the title, this is also a movie about bravery and the loneliness of some lifestyles, and between George Kennedy at his most sinister, the influences on First Blood and Kirk Douglas in top form, this was highly engrossing stuff.

Nope, they are each a different character in their respective films; I mainly tried to find two pics that were similar, but the scenes are different... and there are some differences between the two, but the basic plot is the same and D'Amato acknowledged his as a remake. Anyhow, in particular I rec The Third Eye, beatnik. I liked it more than I anticipated and you might dig it. :)

30. In the Realm of the Senses (1976)

This was fascinating... it's my first artistic "porn" film. The sexual obsession in this was clear, and it was probably the most intense sexual arc I've seen. I also really appreciated the shots being largely focused on the characters and not the genitals. I'm not sure if I liked the film or was just so interested in it that I couldn't look away, but I've added it to my favorites list nonetheless.

Double viewing:

19: Stoney (1969) 6

Image

Featuring some spots of dirt and lines that show signs of its Grindhouse origins, Code Red present a good transfer, with the soundtrack being clean and “rougher” moments of the picture quality appearing to be re-inserted footage in the otherwise smooth transfer. Done during a challenging (to put it mildly)time in the Philippines, the screenplay by Walter Anton White is surprisingly direct in the troubles of the time when adapting James M. Fox,as all plans for the heist have to be made, with the trigger-happy military in mind.

Whilst she is placed to be the main focus, White disappointing gives little spark to the characteristics of Stone, that leaves the heist and danger of dealing with the army lacking much sense of excitement. Greatly helped by the leading lady, director Wray Davis finds zest lacking in the script with a peculiar directing style matching the blinking of eyes (!) and a moody freeze-frame final. Looking very sexy in chic costumes, Barbara Bouchet gives a very good performance as Stoney, whose flirting Bouchet twirls into calculating ways to get hold of Stoney’s stones.

20: The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch (1968) 9

Image

Embracing the name of the film, director Noriaki Yuasa & cinematographer Akira Uehara cast a psychedelia atmosphere in sequences that explore Sayuri nightmares with trippy lights that gives sword fights with snakes and floating masked heads an incredibly off-beat vibe. Whilst the title itself is pure pulp,Yuasa wisely limits kitsch for the dream sequences, to instead craft a psychological chiller, with Uehara silky black and white close-ups chipping at the fractured relationship between Sayuri and Tamimi. Wrapping the terror round Sayuri with gruelling smashes against her tiny hands, Yuasa and Uehara gives the family home a claustrophobic appearance with coiled tracking shots revealing Sayuri has nowhere to escape from the snake girl and the witch.

Putting two of Kazuo Kozu’s Manga’s together,Kimiyuki Hasegawa makes the matching up look seamless, with the stark screams of the dream sequences being painted with the vibrancy of Manga. Unveiling in the beginning that the father is away abroad at work, Hasegawa makes the unsettling horror grounded, with excellently-written dialogue reflecting Tamimi’s psychodrama desire to be the lone sister to get attention from mum, and Sayuri’s nightmare of all the adults treating her concerns about Tamimi’s as fairy tale jealousy.

1. Keoma - 4/10 I find spaghetti westerns to be particularly bad. Starting with partial or full dubbing and the horrible situations. This dealt with racist characters and I am not into shootouts or violence, so I really hated this.
2. Una pistola per Ringo 5/10 - Not into the violence and rape and the main character who was just a mercenary.
3. Multiple Maniacs https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/multiple-maniacs/
4. Kyûketsuki hantâ D (1985) Cult list - 4/10 Not that interesting and a couple of things that make it inappropriate for children.
5. Maniac Cop (1988) 5/10 Pretty cheap thrills and second-rate acting. Okay at best.
6. Serial Mom (1994) Rewatch - midnight movie showing https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/serial-mom/1/
7. THX 1138 (1971) Cult
8. Bandidos (1967) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
9. Il grande duello (1972) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
10. Never Give a Sucker an Even Break - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics (unofficial)+ Weird list (official) - 6/10 - W.C. Fields is zany as always. It may not be his best film. Although it appears on the weird list, it’s not that unusual. Pretty random, though.
11. Ghosts... of the Civil Dead (1988) John Hillcoat is not the director for me. I have really disliked all the films I’ve seen by him, so I’m going to avoid his work in the future.
12. Das Experiment (2001) 5.5/10 I like this type of thing usually, but films like Experimenter
13. Xia dao Gao Fei/Full Contact (1992) - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics list - Didn’t like the portrayal of women or the violence, so despite liking Chow Yun-Fat for some other movies he’s done, this wasn’t for me.
14. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) 500+ Essential Cult Movies - 5/10 This is pretty bad, but Tina Turner's presence is worth watching it for. She's not an actress, but rather a huge personality. Throw in a crash or two and then you have this movie. The song for the closing credits said, “We don’t need another hero”, but perhaps, we don’t need another Mad Max.
15. Dio perdona... Io no!/God Forgives I Don't (1967) 5/10 was going okay until the violence toward women.
16. I crudeli/The Hellbenders (1967) 6.5/10 This was one of the better spaghetti westerns I’ve seen all month. Finally, a decent female character.

115. Kulay dugo ang gabi (1964) a.k.a. The Blood Drinkers
A Dracula-esque vampire wishes to bring back his beloved from the dead and requires the blood of the local townspeople to do so. Visually arresting with various tints and vibrant colors, The Blood Drinkers is one of the best of the Filipino horror films I've seen. The vampire Marco plays it broad and menacing and is a treat to watch.

Image
116. Trail of Dracula Trailer Reel
This fun trailer compilation involves an hour and a half worth of Dracula-related trailers including but not limited to several Christopher Lee Hammer flicks, some classic Universal ones and a bevy of much more obscure Dracula pictures. In fact, it's given me some ideas to dig around for like the corny nonsense of the David Niven-starring Old Dracula and the moody Japanese pic Lake of Dracula. For anyone interested in the DVD, Trail of Dracula also includes a full-length documentary on the history of Dracula in film and makes for a good watch itself.

Image
117. Circus of Horrors (1960)
A string of mysterious "accidents" begin to befall circus performers who bear odd facial scars. As the police slowly start to put the pieces together, the circus introduces a new ferocious act. This was a decent but fairly slow pot boiler that seems to toss in another death just as things are starting to get too dull. Overall it was decent movie but not one I'll probably revisit any time soon.

Image
118. Die Säge des Todes (1981) a.k.a. Bloody Moon
Women at a foreign language boarding school are being killed off and an incestuous weirdo with a scarred face who likes to wear masks and spy on women is the lead suspect. But is everything as it seems? Here we have Jess Franco basically making a slasher movie with some pretty gory kills (the most infamous and bizarre involves a woman tied to a log in a lumber mill). Overall, it's not really that great with a predictable script and super dumb characters but gorehounds and midnight movie fans will probably find something to be entertained by here.

Image
119. The Return of Dracula (1958)
Dracula kills a guy on a train and then pretends to be him, posing as a distant European cousin to an American family. He becomes particularly interested in the doe-eyed Rachel, who begins to suspect her cousin is not what he seems after her friend dies. This one is a little slow in places but still has a few pulpy thrills with some solid, broad performances from Lederer (Dracula) and Norma Eberhardt (Rachel). I will say though that Eberhardt's eyes bulged so aggressively at times that I found it distracting.

Image
120. The Dorm That Dripped Blood (1982)
Some students stay behind at a college over Christmas break and start getting picked off by an intense murderer. Low budget with crummy acting, this movie does have a couple of saving graces. One is just how brutal some of the killings are with pretty decent gore effects as well. Another is the surprisingly effective ending sequence which I won't go into to avoid spoilers.

This film seems to be mostly remembered on account of its iconic score, however, the music is not especially well used (the crescendos spell out every dramatic cue). The plot also feels like is something out of a soap opera with so many character revelations, betrayals and surprises that it is easy to lose track of what is going on. Such complexities would have perhaps been less of an issue in a longer movie, but here it doesn't work... but there are at least a couple of good child actors here.

31. City of the Living Dead (1980)

My first Fulci... I loved the visuals in this, with some nicely framed shots and the special effects of all the zombies and gore. But the plot pushed too far into the religious/fantasy realm, and ended up being more distracting for me than immersive. Enjoyable enough watch, though.

32. Day of Anger (1967)

An aging gunfighter decides to mentor a protoge... And this film hit the notes on psychology super effectively. Really interesting portrayal of the complexities of interpersonal relations in the area and power/political struggles between the characters. Some decent over-the-top violence, but that was pretty secondary for me.

21: The Killer Likes Candy (1968) 4

Image

Treating it to none of the care they gave the Stoney transfer, Code Red slap on an old VHS print to disc, that includes moments where the tape has been chewed up. Done as the Euro Spy genre was fading out, the writers adaptation of Adam Saint Moore’s novel targets crossing Euro Spy with the Thriller. Sweetening the intro of the killer, the writers move to make CIA agent Mark Stone a hard-nosed assassin determined to protect the king gives the flick an Italian Crime edge. Once the candy has been eaten, the writers sadly let the somewhat off-beat mood melt away for dry gang fights between Stone and the would-be killers. Chewing up the candy killer, co-directors Federico Chentrens & Maurice Cloche (who also co-wrote) give the sniper killer targeting a documentary rawness, which whimpers into shoot-outs that offer litter on screen candy.

17. Arise! The SubGenius Video (1992) 5.6/10 Weird list / The mindfuck movie list - This was pretty weird, of course.
18. Knightriders (1981) - 5/10 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/knightriders/
19. Navajo Joe (1966)
20. Night Tide (1961) VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics 7/10 - It’s been on my watchlist a LONG time, perhaps around 10 years. MUBI was streaming this. We get to see a young Dennis Hopper. It unfolds like a normal movie, then takes crazy, wild turns.

121. La ardilla roja (1993) a.k.a. The Red Squirrel
A guy about to commit suicide witnesses a girl crash on a motorcycle off a bridge in front of him. He rushes to her aid and discovers she has amnesia, so naturally he pulls an "Overboard" and makes up a name for her and tells her they've been in a relationship for four years. Unfortunately for him, her past will soon come crashing down on both of them. This was an interesting one that was equal parts darkly comic, perversely unsettling and fascinatingly mysterious (lots of adjectives, I know). While the basic plot isn't terribly complicated, the movie has several odd asides and unnatural situations that make it more than the some of its parts.

Image
122. L'inhumaine (1924)
A famous singer is adored by many and never returns the favor. One spurned suitor in particular happens to be a scientist who appears to have committed suicide. Upon feeling regret for her coldness to him, she visits him only to discover he only feigned death. Another spurned suitor takes a different route, leading to her death. But the scientist has a means to potentially bring her back to life. Will it work? To start off, I'll state the obvious and say the set design for this is fantastic. I dig the art deco style and this has it in spades. The visuals in the laboratory scene toward the end were also impressively staged. This really is an excellent film that deserves to be as widely known as the likes of Metropolis and Nosferatu.

Image
123. Incubus (1966)
A succubus is tired of seducing the average man and desires a real challenge. She finds it in a wounded soldier (a pre-Star Trek William Shatner) who, along with his sister, makes for a very pious target. Will he succumb to her wills or will love triumph? I fully expected to have some laughs at the expense of this oddball film done in entirely in Esperanto but it really ended up being pretty decent with some fairly interesting plot points.

Image
124. Il mostro di Venezia (1965) a.k.a. Monster in Venice
A killer prowls beneath the streets of Venice, preying on innocent women and adding them to his morbid collection. There are some vague similarities in plot to the previously viewed this month Amsterdamned, but Monster in Venice has a totally different vibe to it, really attempting to evoke more of a gothic horror vibe at times but in sub-dwelling catacombs rather than a musty castle. While the ending is pretty good, much of the film drags making it a little bit of a slog to watch.

Image
125. I tre che sconvolsero il West (Vado, vedo e sparo) (1968) a.k.a. One Dollar Too Many
Three untrustworthy guys make a pact to work together to find a massive sum of stolen money. You can imagine how long said pact lasts. Damn this was goofy. I was not expecting a wacky comedy, so its broad shenanigans caught me off guard. It also wasn't really all that funny anyway but did have a surprisingly high death count for something claiming to be so silly.

SERGIO MARTINO JUNGLE DOUBLE FEATURE
ImageImage
126. La montagna del dio cannibale (1978) a.k.a. Mountain of the Cannibal God
127. Il fiume del grande caimano (1979) a.k.a. The Great Alligator River
In Mountain of the Cannibal God, a woman and her brother travel to the heart of Africa to locate her husband's missing expedition. Suffice it to say, things do not go well. And in The Great Alligator River, a resort in Africa is attacked by both a mythical alligator and the pissed off natives who feel the tourists have gotten the alligator riled up. In the past, I've enjoyed Martino's giallos and westerns but I really don't think these African jungle movies are his strong point. While they both have flashes of the style he's exhibited in his other films, the plots are just too basic to do much of anything with and the effects (both the gore effects and the alligator) are not great and tend to conjure up more laughs than gasps.

The wintery setting really reflects the bleakness of the overall story here and the denouement in particular, and it is the unexpected (yet realistic) ending that really distinguishes The Great Silence. The film has several other virtues though, most notably Klaus Kinski's sinister turn, intelligent debate about the "the law [having] the right to kill" those who kill, and tension as Kinski refuses to draw first since part of the hero's moral code is never to draw first.
