16: Nightmare Castle (1965) 4

Image

Made as a love letter to Italian Gothic Horror and the lead actress, co-writer/(with Fabio De Agostini) director Mario Caiano goes round an odd way in expressing it,as Caiano & cinematographer Enzo Barboni dashes of surrealist nightmares, yelping deaths and lovingly-held close-ups are wiped clean by the majority of the run-time taken up by a costume drama romance, which holds little atmosphere of fear or urgency, with Ennio Morricone’s classy score trying to bring shivers to the oddly calm and casual mood of the movie. Going blonde for her dual role, (perhaps an in-joke to her role in Elvis’s Flaming City?)Barbara Steele grabs the film with an excellent sensuality as Jenny and Muriel Arrowsmith, with Steele lighting the flames of unease between her and Helga Liné’s Solange, along with keeping Muriel in a nightmare state in the nightmare castle.

1. Keoma - 4/10 I find spaghetti westerns to be particularly bad. Starting with partial or full dubbing and the horrible situations. This dealt with racist characters and I am not into shootouts or violence, so I really hated this.
2. Una pistola per Ringo 5/10 - Not into the violence and rape and the main character who was just a mercenary.
3. Multiple Maniacs https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/multiple-maniacs/
4. Kyûketsuki hantâ D (1985) Cult list - 4/10 Not that interesting and a couple of things that make it inappropriate for children.
5. Maniac Cop (1988) 5/10 Pretty cheap thrills and second-rate acting. Okay at best.
6. Serial Mom (1994) Rewatch - midnight movie showing https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/serial-mom/1/
7. THX 1138 (1971) Cult
8. Bandidos (1967) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
9. Il grande duello (1972) 5/10 Spaghetti Western
10. Never Give a Sucker an Even Break - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics (unofficial)+ Weird list (official) - 6/10 - W.C. Fields is zany as always. It may not be his best film. Although it appears on the weird list, it’s not that unusual. Pretty random, though.
11. Ghosts... of the Civil Dead (1988) John Hillcoat is not the director for me. I have really disliked all the films I’ve seen by him, so I’m going to avoid his work in the future.
12. Das Experiment (2001) 5.5/10 I like this type of thing usually, but films like Experimenter

95. Avere vent'anni (1978) a.k.a. To Be Twenty
Two older teen girls decide they're fed up with their lives and hitchhike to Rom to go to a convent rumored to be a big orgy (yea... I dunno). When they arrive they get more than they bargained for though. I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not a huge fan of Italian sex comedies. I'm not saying I'll never give another one a chance but this one was kind of dull with an out of nowhere ending that gave serious WTF vibes.

Image
96. Carry on Emmannuelle (1978)
Emmanuelle arrives in the UK to be with her husband, the French Ambassador. Unfortunately for her, he's more interested in lifting weights and impressing dignitaries than satisfying her needs, so she looks to satisfy them in other ways. Carry On brings us what essentially amounts to one massive string of double entendres with only the slightest of plots. The constant cheesy, sex-based wordplay just wore me down after a while.

Image
97. The Witch Who Came from the Sea (1976)
It's the story of a mentally disturbed woman who kills men out of a deep-seated childhood trauma. Weirdly rhythmic dialogue, odd hallucinations and harrowing flashbacks mark a pretty unique grindhouse, the rare bird with some substance to it.

Image
98. Toto le héros (1991)
Reminiscent of Vertigo (and even referencing it obviously), Toto the Hero is an odd Russian nesting doll of a movie with a dense plot about a man who blames another man for all the misery and misfortune in his life, believing they were switched at birth during a fire in the nursery. I thought it was quite good and while it is fairly odd and quirky, I think it's probably one of the least weird movies on the Certified Weird list.

12. Seven days in May (64) [psychotronic, 500+ ess cult] - Rewatch
This still packs a wallop after 50+ years. Lancaster & Douglas are great. Funny, I remembered it as having more action at the end - I must be confusing it with something else. The resolution seems a bit quaint in the present climate.

13-16. Kung Fu (72, S1 Ep 1-4) - Double
Well, I guess I've satisfied my curiosity about this one. Enough for now. Very much of its time.

10. C'est arrive pres de chez vous aka Man Bites Dog (Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, Benoit Poelvoorde, 1992) - 6/10

11. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (Joseph Sargent, 1974) - 8/10
Really liked this one, however I found the ending of the heist to be kind of rushed. I want to watch Tony Scott's remake and see how it holds up in comparison.

12. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (Yoshiaki Kawajiri, 2000) - 7/10
The animation is way better than in the first movie and the cast of characters is great but it lacks the low budget creepiness that the original had.

99. Arise! The SubGenius Video (1992)
This acts as an introduction to the Church of the Subgenius and its myriad confusing and contradictory beliefs and symbology. Church of the Subgenius and its founder and deity-figure Bob acts as an elaborate satire of modern religion. This video barrages you with a headache-inducing array of bizarre imagery, fiery nonsensical sermons and the ever-present constantly mutating visage of Bob. It is all quite exhausting.

Image
100. House of Horrors (1946)
A deranged sculptor fishes a neanderthal man out of the river and proceeds to start sculpting a bust of him. Before long, he starts siccing the neanderthal (dubbed "The Creeper") on art critics unfortunate enough to insult his work. This one had a really odd tone where much of the character interactions and dialogue were light and playful even when discussing the grim details of The Creepers' latest victim. The neanderthal's makeup isn't too bad but the movie fails to really drum up much suspense with its whiplash tone.

Image
101. Prey (1981)
A lesbian couple takes in a stranger while he's recovering from an injury. Unbeknownst to them, he's actually a malicious, shape-shifting alien who had recently killed and is plotting against them. This one had some interesting moments, but I felt it was overall a little on the slow side.

Image
102. Brazil: A Report on Torture (1971)
Haskell Wexler (of Medium Cool) brings us a documentary featuring Brazilian ex-prisoners recounting (or in some cases even re-enacting) the various torture techniques used against them by the Brazilian police force at the behest of the government. I can see why the grindhouse crowds would've gone for this one. Its lurid subject matter and torture re-enactments grnt the same sort of appeal to a certain kind of deviant as the mondo films that were so popular at this time. I found it rather hard to watch and fairly depressing.

Rondo Hatton (the actor who played the Creeper) was called "the monster who needs no makeup". He suffered from acromegaly.

11. The Terminator (1984) [Rewatch] 9/10
12. Bitch Slap (2009) 3/10
13. They Nest (2000)
Bland bug movie with bored-looking actors. Some suitably gross effects on occasion but too much of the movie is by-the-numbers and focussed not on the bugs, but on a group of rednecks who have a tiresome beef with the hero.
3/10

14. La polizia chiede aiuto / What Have They Done to Your Daughters? (1974)
For most of its running time this is a grim and gripping police procedural with thriller elements. The ending is a bit diappointing compared to the rest, with the central antagonist, a cleaver-wielding motorcyclist) brought to justice in a realistic but unsatisfying way. The cinematography and design is fine, but the film doesn't excel in this area as other giallos do.
6/10

Image

15. Subspecies: The Awakening / Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998)
A solid finish to the Subspecies franchise. Starts off slowly and awkwardly nullifying the ending of the previous film, but as the film goes on it improves, with lots of entertaining evil plotting and double-crossing from the vampires.
5/10

Image

16. Flesh Gordon (1974)
It's not nearly as explicit as I thought it would be; British sex comedies of the same era have a lot more nudity and soft-core scenes. This seems more interested in actually making a sci-fi adventure. On the plus side the special effects are charming and detailed, a wonderful tribute to the stop-motion and low-tech effects of the original serials. Unfortunately for the rest of the film, the humour is poor and the novelty value eventually wears off.
4/10

(whoops; just remembered that as a badmovies.org film, this western is eligible here too) :ph43r:

Less offensive than one might expect; this dwarf-actors western is serious in tone and while some of the comic relief is indeed groan-inducing, such moments are limited and a non-exploitative gag with an elusive duck is actually the weakest joke. This is not, however, a good film. The songs are uniformly poor, the dialogue is leaden and didactic and the central romance is dull, making this more boring than offensive. If you watch it though, try to spot all the child actors slotted in as extras.

I'd still like to give Child Bride a chance--I like hour-long films. But I appreciate you telling me it's not good.
It doesn't help that it's pretty much child porn that found a loophole (it's "educational").
Not really. Shirley Mills (who is actually really solid in the film) swims topless at one point in a long distance shot. I can't recall exactly how long the scene goes on for, but I think we are talking about around two minutes in a 60 minute film. Child Bride certainly isn't a great film; it's very didactic and the adult actors are pretty stilted, but no, I think your description is misleading.

27. The Goonies (1985) [Rewatch]

I talked my wife into watching a cult movie last night, and she chose The Goonies. Which I didn't mind at all. I love this movie. It has every indication it's a "you had to be there" film - where unless you grew up with that movie, it wouldn't work. But I love it. It has many of those "kids movie" problems where the adult in me is screaming "THAT'S NOT HOW THE WORLD WORKS", but you see the friendship and coming of age and desperately wanting to take on those adult responsibilities. And I loved a lot of the sets and decoration - some fantastic images in there. Still a lot of fun.

28. A Man Escaped (1956) [500 Essential Cult Movies]

This was my second Bresson (Pickpocket being the first), and the first film I actually liked by him. Simplicity at its finest, there was a great tension build right up until the end. I loved the realism in this, and I was very pleasantly surprised with this.

29. The Lady Eve (1941) [500 Essential Cult Movies]

This was also pretty fun. I've been used to Barbara Stanwyck in later noirs, so it it was fun seeing her in this role. Fun dialogue and a solid plot line kept it going. Henry Fonda as a rich naive weirdo was a bit shocking to me after watching him in some Westerns this month. But it worked.

103. The Love Witch (2016)
A woman decides to become a witch after being left by her husband and conjures up some powerful love potions that work all too well on a string of suitors. The Love Witch hearkens back to the 60's in multiple ways: from the sumptuous technicolors visuals to the brief but prevalent trend of witch-themed movies (Witchfinder General, Burn Witch Burn, Black Sunday, etc.) to the extended discussions of female body politics. It's low budget, amateurish origins really only show in the stilted acting and clunky scripting (and even that could be intentional or at least intended to be perceived as intentional). Overall, it was an interesting watch.

104. El ataque de los muertos sin ojos (1973) a.k.a. Return of the Blind Dead
The blind dead Templar Knights who were burned alive long ago return to terrorize the inhabitants of a small village. I'm really not sure how this one relates to the first movie other than the blind dead themselves. Regardless, while the design of the Templar knights is still solid like the first one, this one seems to rob the narrative of much of its gothic eeriness by putting them on horseback and having them clanging around swinging swords and causing a ruckus, a far cry from the doom-filled mist of the initial outing. While it lacks in subtlety in comparison to its predecessor, it probably has a little more forward momentum to it. Overall, not an amazing movie.

105. Strange Behavior (1981) a.k.a. Dead Kids
Mysterious seemingly-related murders have been cropping up all over a small town in the midwest but what do a group of teenagers who have been experimented on have to do with it? If you guessed 'a lot', you'd be correct. While it dragged a little in places, it was actually not half bad. The skill behind the camera is pretty obvious and the script seemed a little smarter than the usual early 80's horror flick. Plus you've got delights such a a syringe the eye and pissing blood insanity that'll leave a lasting impression.

106. The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (1988)
A boy in the 14th century has bizarre visions of the future and leads a group of villagers to attempt to dig a hole through the world to escape the plague. Instead they end up traveling trough time to the present where their terror is only beginning. This was an interesting one. With a fish out of water premise normally reserved for wacky comedies, The Navigator takes a much more serious approach to the subject matter, illustrating the panic and fear that such a travel would actually bring about. Everything around them is a threat. Nothing makes sense. I liked this one a lot.

13. Xia dao Gao Fei/Full Contact (1992) - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics list - Didn’t like the portrayal of women or the violence, so despite liking Chow Yun-Fat for some other movies he’s done, this wasn’t for me.
14. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) 500+ Essential Cult Movies - 5/10 This is pretty bad, but Tina Turner's presence is worth watching it for. She's not an actress, but rather a huge personality. Throw in a crash or two and then you have this movie. The song for the closing credits said, “We don’t need another hero”, but perhaps, we don’t need another Mad Max.

107. Bara no sôretsu (1969) a.k.a. Funeral Parade of Roses
The movie follows a transvestite through Tokyo and the variou situations that befall him. Honestly, I couldn't really piece together much of an actual plot. The movie was high on style and a certain 'cool' but was highly fragmented and intentionally avant guarde. While it had moments I found very fascinating, I just didn't come away from it with anything meaningful.

Image
108. Metempsyco (1963) a.k.a. Tomb of Torture
A woman has strange dreams of a past life and a mysterious creep is torturing and killing people in a spooky old castle. Are they related? Naturally. Dull and plodding, Tomb of Torture doesn't really live up to its sensationalist title outside of a couple of moments, including a pretty decent ending.

Image
109. Not of This Earth (1957)
Mr. Johnson is an odd duck to say the least. He wears sunglasses all the time. He has a very stilted manner of speaking. He walks into a doctor's office and demands a blood transfusion without submitting to a blood test. Oh, he's also a mind-controlling alien on a mission of world domination (I mean, the alien bit is in the title so...). I actually had some fun with this one. If anything it moves by a little too quickly at times. I genuinely wanted to know more about this militaristic coup occurring on his home planet and who this female alien was that showed up unexpectedly. But this sci-fi cheapy seems more interested in rushing to its inevitable conclusion. Oh well.

Image
110. Les mémés cannibales (1988) a.k.a. Rabid Grannies
Two sweet old ladies are transformed into demons and go on a killing spree. That's pretty much it. It's funded by Troma, so don't expect high art here. The effects remind me of a more grisly Troll 2 (not a compliment btw) and the movie has an odd tone that seems to debate with itself whether it wants to go full tilt into silly Troma territory or try to tow the line as a more legit horror release. This may make for a pretty entertaining party movie to put on and laugh at but is by no means good.

Image
111. Il prezzo del potere (1969) a.k.a. The Price of Power
A conspiracy is sown to attempt to assassinate the president in Texas. This isn't an Oliver Stone movie, right? Nope. The president in question is Garfield and the blame for his attempted assassination gets pinned on a poor black man who was actually trying to help. Will he be freed? Will the horrible, racist gang who actually plotted the assassination get their comeuppance? This was thematically a fairly interesting spaghetti western in that it's a pretty obvious allusion to the Kennedy assassination and spends more time in court rooms and political chambers than grimy saloons and dusty deserts (not to say there's none of that). I thought it was pretty good although a little overly chatty in places.

All FTV's unless stated:

A handful of Cult!

17: Joysticks (1983) 6

Getting two proper fit ladies out of their tops within the first 5 minutes, director Greydon Clark & cinematographer Nicholas Josef von Sternberg show that they know what game they are playing, with light gross-out comedy of fart gags gusting their way across the screen, and the (what the IMDb Horror board used to call) "boobage" bouncing along to each punch-line. Made with Midway Games, Clark gives the movie dollops of charm with a retro atmosphere from the pans across all the arcade games being played and Pac-Man edits. Whilst keeping all the characters at a surface level, the screenplay by Al Gomez/Mickey Epps and Curtis Burch does find room for satirical button bashing on the Video Games moral panic of the era. Blazing in looking like the Joker, Jon Gries steals the controller as tough Punk King Vidiot, with Gries mad cackling as Vidiot bringing joy to the joysticks.
