All first time viewings unless stated:

25: One Deadly Summer (1983) 9

Not making anything else until a segment in 1991’s Lest We Forget, director Jean Becker shows here what could have been, with a highly distinctive style, that retains the elegance of his dad Jacques production, but is proudly it’s own creation. Wiggling Elle into the Montecciari family life, Becker and his cinematographer brother Étienne give the first half a lush Erotic rural Drama atmosphere, with sharp outdoor lighting giving the many naked appearances of Elle a sensually-charged mood, and the warm, golden glow within the Montecciari household colouring the cold shoulders and snide remarks Elle gets from family members. Closely working with editor Jacques Witta,Becker undresses Elle’s flirting with tightly-coiled editing that brings to light a mystery in her family life, that gains clarity with each note Elle hits on a secret that her parents have locked from her sight.

Adapting his own novel,Sébastien Japrisot wonderfully draws each member of the Montecciari family with quirks that abrasively rub against Elle, from the hot and cold romance of Pin-Pon and the frozen glances from the mother, to the fragile attempt at friendship from a half-deaf relative. Gathering the pieces to Elle’s family life, Japrisot displays an excellent maturity to the horrors inflicted on her family, with exchanges between Elle and her locked behind a door dad allowing Japrisot to peel open the psychological damage that the secret has had on Elle. Looking ravishing from her first appearance,Adjani gives an incredible performance as Elle, who is given a sexual swagger in the naked scenes, which keeps the mental fragility just underneath the skin during this one deadly Summer.

This is essentially a movie in two parts. The first 55 minutes plays out as a quaint comedy of manners with way too much talking and only occasional bright moments. The film turns quite madcap in the final 40 minutes though as the rumoured beast appears, including a black comedy laced rape scene. This final section is wildly imaginative and it is a shame that the rest of the film is not quite as well done.

4. 'Les gaités de l'escadron' (1932, Maurice Tourneur) - 4 or 5/10 (FTV)
5. 'Bob le flambeur' (1956, Jean-Pierre Melville) - 9/10 (RV)
6. 'Les choses de la vie' (1970, Claude Sautet) - 7.5/10 (FTV)
7. 'Le complot' (1973, René Gainville) - 6.5/10 (FTV)
8. 'La consolation' (2017, Cyril Mennegun) - 7/10 (FTV)

I love this poster to Mennegun's 'La consolation'. Some of the acting is awkward but there is a touching and profound humanism and unhurried lyrical simplicity to the film and its long contemplative silences are filmed quite exquisitely. The settings and interiors allow the intimacy to breathe and moments of catharsis flow all the more powerfully.

''Quasiment dépourvu de dialogue, mais très musical en revanche, le film semble avoir pour objet de décrire le chemin menant, chez un fils ainsi privé de l’amour maternel, à quelque chose qui soit de l’ordre de l’expression d’un sentiment d’abandon, d’une possible rédemption qu’un telle absence peut creuser.'' - from Jacques Mandelbaum's fine review in Le Monde

18. Le fantôme de la liberté (Fr 74) - Rewatch [Triple]
I'm enjoying rewatching a good deal of stuff that I haven't seen since the days of VHS - or earlier. I certainly didn't remember the structure of this, the way it follows A until A meets B, then follows B until B meets C.... I guess it pretty common these days, but was it fairly novel then?

There are several striking images here, from scythes smoothly wielded across the screen, to women drinking ox blood in slaughterhouses, to the ominous chateau setting. The film does not quite live up to its promise of something truly shocking occurring at midnight, but this is an intriguing film nevertheless, particularly with its empowered female characters and disempowered male protagonist. Add in a thrilling final ten minutes and this is an easy recommendation.

Man, I hate that sound of doom. I feel for you. You got my main total right and the doubles and triples sound about right too (I stopped keeping track of those after my own totals got garbled).

9. 'Premier rendez-vous' (1941, Henri Decoin) - 9/10 (RV)
10. 'Un condé' (1970, Yves Boisset) - 8/10 (RV)
11. 'La tortue sur le dos' (1978, Luc Béraud) - 6/10 (FTV)
12. 'Sous le soleil de Satan' (1987, Maurice Pialat) - 7/10 (FTV)
13. 'Le combat ordinaire' (2015, Laurent Tuel) - 7/10 (FTV)

Damn, I just so adore the insouciance, radiant joyousness, and sheer comedic timing of Danielle Darrieux's exquisite central turn in Decoin's escapist charmer. Just as magical upon a revisit. What a star we lost just recently!

Yes, that's the least NSFW image I could find for this strange film. What exact political points Makavejev is trying to make here are vague and unclear, however, the film can sort of be appreciated as a study of twentieth century marketing of sex. The film is full of phallic imagery, golden showers, fluorescent chastity belts, etc. With so much going on, the film never once bores, but what it is all in aid of...?

Clocking in at less than two thirds of the runtime of JFK, to which it is often compared, this French conspiracy thriller is nowhere near as complex and does not explore the toll of working the case on the protagonist's life in anywhere near as much depth. This is an intense ride all the way though with one of the most nail-biting payphone sequences ever committed to film and a pitch perfect, haunting ending.

comme d'habitudeShow
1. François Truffaut: Stolen Portraits 1993 - 10/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/f ... portraits/ - Question for native French speakers. Marcel Ophuls tells a story about how Max referred to Truffaut as “malfrangué” (translated as scruffy). Not sure I’m spelling it right. Does anyone have an idea what the true meaning of this word is? and/or the spelling?
2. Paris-Willouby/Meet the Guilbys (2015) - 5.5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/meet-the-guilbys/
3. Back to Burgundy/Ce Qui Nous Lie - 7/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/back-to-burgundy/
4. L’Économie du couple/After Love - 5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/after-love-2016/
5. Le Moine - 5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/the-monk/
6. La liste de mes envies - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/l ... es-envies/
7. Una pura formalità / A Pure Formality - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/a-pure-formality/
8. Verdun, visions d'histoire (1928) kind of boring, but some nice footage 6/10
9. La femme de nulle part (1922) 6/10
10. Le Distrait (1970) 6/10 I don’t enjoy Pierre Richard as much as some, but this was moderately entertaining.
11. Le Petit bougnat (1970) 6/10 The things I see for Isabelle Adjani. She was a teenager, about 14 or 15, playing a 13 year-old (13 and 1/2 in fact). It’s not tremendous, but it’s okay.
12. Faites comme si je n'étais pas là/Pretend I’m Not Here (2000) 6/10 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/p ... -not-here/
13. Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Three: Norman 5/10 This season is dragging, because it focuses more on the agents than the stars. In the 2nd episode, season two, it was over 15 minutes before Fabrice Luchini appeared.
14.Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Four: Isabelle 7/10 I love Adjani. This episode was good/better, but not great.
15. Une semaine de vacances (1980) 6.5/10
16. Sur un arbre perché (1971, Serge Korber) 6/10 The “joke” gets old really quickly, but the presence of Geraldine Chaplin was enough to make it worthwhile.
17. Sérieux comme le plaisir (1975, Robert Benayoun) 5.5/10 This is kind of a cheap film, but at least it has Jane Birkin and a small appearance from Serge Gainsbourg.
18.Piège (1970) - weird, experimental French film that I lost patience with over time, even though it was so short.
19. L’Atelier / The Workshop (2017) - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/t ... shop-2017/
20. Pourquoi pas moi? (1999) 6/10 - Coming out story that involves a group of friends.
21. Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Five: Guy - 6/10 the season continued to be iffy
22.Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Six: Juliette - 7/10 - final episode - it’s impossible to not like Juliette Binoche. There’s only one question you’ll have to answer after watching this episode and that is would you like it if she licked your face?
23. Summer in the Forest 2017 Directed by Randall Wright
24. La Dream Team - worth it for Gerard Depardieu’s performance. Everything else is pretty standard. (Netflix USA)
25. Le tableau / The Painting (2011) 6/10
26. Voir du pays/The Stopover - The Coulin Sisters - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/the-stopover/
27. Médecin de campagne/The Country Doctor - 6/10
28. L'enquęte/The Clearstream Affair - 6/10
29. La mécanique des flux/Against the Tide - 6/10 - documentary on Syrian refugees
30. Paulette - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/paulette/
31. L'âge de raison/Love in the Age of Reason (2010) - 5/10 - This film with Sophie Marceau and by Yann Samuell (same guy who directed Jeux d’enfants/Love Me if You Dare) unfortunately doesn’t ring true or whimsical like some of their previous efforts. It was playing in theaters in France right before I moved there, but left theaters before I could see it. Looks like I wouldn’t have missed anything.
32. Une bouteille à la mer (2010) 6/10 Many cultures clash head-on in this film. It doesn’t always work and it isn’t always compelling, but it’s an okay watch.
33. Belle de Jour (1967) - rewatch - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/belle-de-jour/1/
34. Godard Mon Amour/Le Redoutable (2017) - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/godard-mon-amour/
35. Lotte in Italia/Struggle in Italy - 1971 - One of Godard’s “boring” films was streaming on MUBI. I’ve been struggling to watch this for the past couple of weeks, but it’s dry. Finally, it was almost leaving MUBI, so I finished it. The dialogue is in Italian, and explained in French with a voiceover by Anne Wiazemsky.
36. Nocturne indien (1989)
37. L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot/Inferno (2009) Rewatch - Two reviews at: https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/h ... inferno/1/
38. Quai des Orfèvres (1947) - Rewatch - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/q ... vres-1947/
39. In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni (1978) Triple (also TSPDT challenge) - Really boring essay film. :(
40. La chair de l'orchidée/ Flesh of the Orchid 1975 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/f ... he-orchid/
41. La douleur - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/memoir-of-pain/

43. Custody aka Jusqu’a la garde - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/custody-2017/
44. Le brio - 7.5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/le-brio/

Rupture was cute and amusing, but many of the gags became predictable as it quickly became obvious that nothing was going to go right for him. I certainly saw the final gag coming.

As someone who has seen Twelve Monkeys multiple times and considers it to be among the 100 greatest films of all time, it was very interesting to watch La Jetéee. The technique was pretty cool too (if I'm not mistaken, there is only one moving image in which she winks) though ultimately I prefer Gilliam's take on the story where I felt more emotional investment in the characters.

Blood of the Beasts was intriguing but hard to watch (due to the graphic animal slaughter, at times with hacksaws). What was especially interesting was seeing all the workers go nonchalantly about their business. Does one eventually become dull to such things when working in an industry for so long?

Toute la mémoire du monde has some of the most breathtaking camerawork that I have ever seen (not that I would expect any less from Alain Resnais) and combined with choice lighting and music, Resnais manages to make the library being filmed spooky, enchanting and a source of wonderment at varying points.

Happy Anniversary was a delightful little short about French traffic jams and the difficulty of one man getting home on his anniversary. There is a fun side character too who amiably moves his car so that Etaix can get out, only to spend the rest of the film trying to reclaim a parking spot.

A Song of Love was amazingly graphic for a film made in 1950. Bits and pieces felt surreal, like as if they were workings of the prison guard's overactive imagination, but an interesting film whatever the case and one impressively not reliant on dialogue.

All first time viewings unless stated:

Three viewings in a row:

26: Education of the Baroness (1977) 10 (Or as I would call it: Discreet Charm of the Porngeoisie.)

Slyly getting the viewer to drop their guard, director Gérard Kikoïne gives the opening ten minutes a classy Erotica look, with everyone in decadent clothes and surroundings. Once he gets all of them inside the house,Kikoïne puts any attempt at a sensual mood in the bin,to instead go for gloriously full-on,pure filth! Whilst they all take part in,some unusual acts (I hope cast & crew washed the veg before lunch!) Kikoïne gives the sex scenes a relaxed, blissful atmosphere, where the ladies are as eager as the guys. Whilst the script is left un-credited,the writers does give the flick a satirical bite, in the bourgeoisie degrading their regal image. Caught up in all of the action taking place in her house, Brigitte Lahaie gives an enticing performance as the Baroness, whose enthusiasm Lahaie has shine during the education.

27: The Gardener of Argenteuil (1966) 6

Plucking tulips over multi-colour credits, director Jean-Paul Le Chanois & cinematographer Walter Wottitz introduce their flower to a peculiar atmosphere of Tulipe’s relaxed time painting and catching up with locals having a brush of calm which paints over his underhanded,money-making ways (highlighted in a stylish opening, the goes on a tour of Tulipe’s cash-changing ways.) Breaking Tulipe’s laid-back ways with the arrival of Noël and Hilda, the screenplay by Alphonse Boudard/François Boyer and Jean-Paul Le Chanois stray from punchlines in their adaptation of René Jouglet’s book for quirks, via the shaky team-up between the trio resulting in mad-dash attempts to keep their illegal money printing safe, and a poetic ending, which shows to each of them the true value of money. The life of the town, Jean Gabin gives a great, slippery performance as Tulipe, who is given an unassuming manner by Gabin, that stops people from ever asking what goes on in the garden of Argenteuil.

28:The Old Guard (1960) 7

Following all the guys on their Road movie-outlook across the countryside paths,Michel Audiard and Gilles Grangier fill every inch of their adaptation of René Fallet’s book with witty word-play. Whilst the Eng Subs slow thing down occasionally for explanations of the puns, the writers keep the the flow of the dialogue moving at a lightning speed, with one of the highlights being each time the guys bicker among themselves. Walking out of town with the trio, director Gilles Grangier & cinematographer Louis Page (who had worked with Gabin on Carne’s films) gives their journey a breezy atmosphere, with the grounded humour covered in a relaxed, countryside backdrop. Reuniting from Le Grande Illusion, Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay are joined by Noel Noel in giving utterly charming performances as the trio, with all of them clearly enjoying their snappy exchanges,as they prove the old guard still have it.

Hi Sol,it is good to read that you enjoyed Fascination so much-is was the first Jean Rollin film that I saw. I was wondering if you have seen anything else by him? Out of the handful I've seen, I'd put Living Dead Girl just behind Fascination, due to it continuing Rollin's dreamy mood, with Fulci-style gore.

No, I haven't seen anything from Rollin, but I am intrigued. From what I had heard over the years, I expected his films to be full of shameless nudity a la Jess Franco, but Fascination was a really classy affair.
