1. François Truffaut: Stolen Portraits 1993 - 10/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/f ... portraits/ - Question for native French speakers. Marcel Ophuls tells a story about how Max referred to Truffaut as “malfrangué” (translated as scruffy). Not sure I’m spelling it right. Does anyone have an idea what the true meaning of this word is? and/or the spelling?
2. Paris-Willouby/Meet the Guilbys (2015) - 5.5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/meet-the-guilbys/
3. Back to Burgundy/Ce Qui Nous Lie - 7/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/back-to-burgundy/
4. L’Économie du couple/After Love - 5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/after-love-2016/
5. Le Moine - 5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/the-monk/
6. La liste de mes envies - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/l ... es-envies/
7. Una pura formalità / A Pure Formality - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/a-pure-formality/
8. Verdun, visions d'histoire (1928) kind of boring, but some nice footage 6/10
9. La femme de nulle part (1922) 6/10
10. Le Distrait 6/10 I don’t enjoy Pierre Richard as much as some, but this was moderately entertaining.
11. Le Petit bougnat 6/10 The things I see for Isabelle Adjani. She was a teenager, about 14 or 15, playing a 13 year-old (13 and 1/2 in fact). It’s not tremendous, but it’s okay.
12. Faites comme si je n'étais pas là/Pretend I’m Not Here (2000) 6/10 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/p ... -not-here/
13. Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Three: Norman 5/10 This season is dragging, because it focuses more on the agents than the stars. In the 2nd episode, season two, it was over 15 minutes before Fabrice Luchini appeared.
14.Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Four: Isabelle 7/10 I love Adjani. This episode was good/better, but not great.
15. Une semaine de vacances (1980) 6.5/10
16. Sur un arbre perché (1971, Serge Korber) 6/10 The “joke” gets old really quickly, but the presence of Geraldine Chaplin was enough to make it worthwhile.
17. Sérieux comme le plaisir (1975, Robert Benayoun) 5.5/10 This is kind of a cheap film, but at least it has Jane Birkin and a small appearance from Serge Gainsbourg.
18.Piège (1970) - weird, experimental French film that I lost patience with over time, even though it was so short.
19. L’Atelier / The Workshop (2017) - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/t ... shop-2017/
20. Pourquoi pas moi? (1999) 6/10 - Coming out story that involves a group of friends.
21. Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Five: Guy - 6/10 the season continued to be iffy
22.Dix percent aka Call My Agent, Season Two Episode Six: Juliette - 7/10 - final episode - it’s impossible to not like Juliette Binoche. There’s only one question you’ll have to answer after watching this episode and that is would you like it if she licked your face?
23. Summer in the Forest2017 Directed by Randall Wright
24. La Dream Team - worth it for Gerard Depardieu’s performance. Everything else is pretty standard. (Netflix USA)
25. Le tableau / The Painting (2011) 6/10
26. Voir du pays/The Stopover - The Coulin Sisters - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/the-stopover/
27. Médecin de campagne/The Country Doctor - 6/10
28. L'enquęte/The Clearstream Affair - 6/10
29. La mécanique des flux/Against the Tide - 6/10 - documentary on Syrian refugees
30. Paulette - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/paulette/
31. L'âge de raison/Love in the Age of Reason (2010) - 5/10 - This film with Sophie Marceau and by Yann Samuell (same guy who directed Jeux d’enfants/Love Me if You Dare) unfortunately doesn’t ring true or whimsical like some of their previous efforts. It was playing in theaters in France right before I moved there, but left theaters before I could see it. Looks like I wouldn’t have missed anything.
32. Une bouteille à la mer (2010) 6/10 Many cultures clash head-on in this film. It doesn’t always work and it isn’t always compelling, but it’s an okay watch.

I am biased. I recommend everything by Adjani. She was also in an episode of Call My Agent (on Netflix): Season 2, Episode 4.

Here's a ranked list of the Adjani films I've seen:

[/quote]Thank you for the great list Alison-with your high placement of 1983's One Deadly Summer making me really look forward to seeing it. Sticking to '83,I today saw Adjani in her other '83 film, (Deadly Circuit)and wow, this (and the Japanese movie I double-billed it with: Yakusoku) are by far the best first viewings I've had this month!

16: Deadly Circuit (1983)10

Image

Following up Garde à vue by cameraman Gilbert Duhalde becoming the cinematographer here, directing auteur Claude Miller beautifully expands on the recurring motifs of Garde with lush outdoor watercolours, and a haunting Jazz score from Carla Bley. Making the 2 hour run-time move at an incredible speed, Miller gives “The Eye” tracking Marie a pristine Neo-Noir clarity of tracking shots following The Eye’s attempts to blend in with the crowd. Bending the initial investigation to the Eye’s growing obsession,Miller twists it into an ultra-stylised dream-logic world, where Marie’s killings have the metallic shine of Giallo, a telekinetic-like connection made with smoothly-held tracking shots, and an explosive shattering of the connection between The Eye and Marie.

Spreading limited details of Marie’s life across the screen in photos, Michel & Jacques Audiard’s adaptation of Marc Behm’s book brims with a Neo-Noir attention to detail, where The Eye excitingly takes the smallest clue to make the fullest portrait of Marie. Turning the mystery down to a simmering threat, the writers masterfully piece together The Eye’s years following of Marie into a study of obsession, where the anticipation of speaking to her gets The Eye to start imagining/performing what he dreams their first encounter will be.

Lighting the eyes of The Eye from every sighting, Isabelle Adjani gives a magnificent performance as Marie, whose mysterious murmurs on her life pulls everyone from Stéphane Audran’s “ The grey lady” to Sami Frey’s Ralph Forbes towards this Femme Fatale’s blast of silence. Reuniting with Miller after Garde,Michel Serrault gives a thrilling performance as Neo-Noir loner The Eye,with Serrault and Adjani impressively creating chemistry just from glances at each other. Desiring to learn all about Marie,Serrault strips The Eye’s life to a raw obsession, which cracks as the deadly circuit breaks.

Two by Truffault:

12. Les deux anglaises et le continent / Two English girls (Fr 71) [Triple]
I think I tried to watch this on VHS years ago but the tape wouldn't behave - or something.

13. Tirez sur le pianiste / Shoot the piano player (Fr 60) - Rewatch [Double]
Another one I saw in a theater when it hit the Midwest. In those pre-home-video days I'd go to see every foreign film on offer just because it was foreign. (There weren't that many, and foreign films on TV tended to be dubbed). - I don't think I got much out of this one, and have been wanting to revisit it ever since.

2. Le genou de Claire / Claire’s knee (Fr 70) [Triple]

4-8. Au service de la France / A very secret service (Fr 15, 12 eps @26m=5 hrs+)

[/quote]I haven't seen Eye of the Beholder. My other favorites from her are The Driver and Nosferatu. She plays Lucy in Herzog's remake of the Murnau silent and it's a role she is perfectly cast in. She's also good in Camille Claudel (title role - another biopic) and Bon Voyage. She always good but those stand out in my memory.

I believe that Allison has seen a lot of Adjani pics gathering from a comment she made earlier in this thread.
EDIT: And now I see that the two of you have already connected. after looking at Allison's list I am reminded of Queen Margot - another great film and performance from Adjani.

godard n'est pas dieuShow

5. Le Moine - 5/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/the-monk/
6. La liste de mes envies - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/l ... es-envies/
7. Una pura formalità / A Pure Formality - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/a-pure-formality/
8. Verdun, visions d'histoire (1928) kind of boring, but some nice footage 6/10
9. La femme de nulle part (1922) 6/10
10. Le Distrait (1970) 6/10 I don’t enjoy Pierre Richard as much as some, but this was moderately entertaining.
11. Le Petit bougnat (1970) 6/10 The things I see for Isabelle Adjani.
23. Summer in the Forest 2017 Directed by Randall Wright
33. Belle de Jour (1967) - rewatch - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/belle-de-jour/1/
34. Godard Mon Amour/Le Redoutable (2017) - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/godard-mon-amour/
35. Lotte in Italia/Struggle in Italy - 1971 - One of Godard’s “boring” films was streaming on MUBI. I’ve been struggling to watch this for the past couple of weeks, but it’s dry. Finally, it was almost leaving MUBI, so I finished it. The dialogue is in Italian, and explained in French with a voiceover by Anne Wiazemsky.

14. Le bonheur (Fr 65) - [Double]
What grabbed me most about this was the use of Mozart: two pieces originally composed for string quartet (and string quartet plus clarinet) were played by a woodwind ensemble throughout his marriage to Therese - the opening Adagio sounded quite discordant. In the end, during the final idylic scenes with Emilie and the children, we hear the adagio & fugue played by a string quartet, as it should be. I don't know what to make of this, but it's certainly significant.

All first time viewings unless stated:

17: Faisons un rêve... (1936)

By far their best presentation of the first 3 in the set,Arrow delivers a spotless picture (with a lot less grain than the other 2) and a largely clean soundtrack. Bringing another of his own plays to screen, the style that lead actor/writer/director Sacha Guitry & cinematographer Georges Benoît appears as a halfway house of New Testament and My Father Was Right, via the enticing opening being an extended panning shot, (that offers an eyeful of cameos from Michel Simon and Arletty!)across a number of tables at a gathering that expand on the relaxed feeling Guitry had shown towards cinema in Father, that becomes rolled into the stage-bound,extended takes of New Testament, with Guitry keeping the camera restrained as he performs his own monologue. Dusting off a play from 20 years ago and completely changing the third act in this adaptation, Raimu as Mari gives the dialogue a refreshing lightness in his exchanges with Guitry’s L'amant, thanks to both of them spinning the playful one-liners with the speed of a Screwball Comedy dream.

Too bad there wasn't a French version of MST3K!

Didn't you watch White Mane? That would count here.

All first time viewings unless stated:

18: Remontons les Champs-Élysées (1938) 7

For the final title in the set Arrow present a solid transfer with a clean soundtrack and a good image, which does feature some wonky frames and spots of dirt. Finally freeing himself from his stage-bound style, lead actor/writer/ directing auteur Sacha Guitry reunites with cinematographer Jean Bachelet to greatly expand on the style he had shown in the opening of Let’s Make a Dream,as Guitry and Bachelet chart the history of the Champs-Élysées with lavish panning shots that glide across the screen capturing the various eras.

Retaining the wit in his dialogue that had featured in all his stage adaptations, Guitry flourishes in matching this with comedic visuals, that flower with sight-gags and playful twirling camera moves glimpsing the various short-lived eras of the Champs-Élysées. Taking an anthology path, the screenplay by Guitry cleverly branches out his major theme of mortality in his work by the wraparound story by history teacher Guitry discussing the unique deaths of his various family members. Skipping across the dry presentation of his stage adaptations, the anthology format allows Guitry to hit a witty punch punch lines, and then turn to another story to keep the mood energetic across the history of the Champs-Élysées.

Early Georges Franju film about a rich man who commits his rebellious son to an insane asylum; the blurriness of what defines insanity is running theme throughout, e.g. does the young man have no job or steady girlfriend because he is aimless or because he is insane? Some elements here do not quite add up and the film is a bit didactic at times as two of the doctors ebate how to treat patients, but Jean-Pierre Mocky is superb throughout though as the troubled young man.

I'm OK with it. It meets the "France had a significant contribution towards this film" threshold.
