A late entry by me:

1. Zatôichi abare-himatsuri (Zatoichi Goes to the Fire Festival) (1970): 7.2 - one of the best entries in the later part of the series.
2. Shin Zatôichi: Yabure! Tôjin-ken (Zatoichi Meets the One Armed Swordsman) (1971) - after the debacle that was Zatoichi meets Yojimbo this was a surprisingly good, with a coherent simple plot and some good action scene's.
3. Cet obscur objet du désir (1977) (rewatch): 8.2 - a great satire on how men desire women as objects. It does become a bit repetitive unfortunately.
4. Céline et Julie vont en bateau - Phantom Ladies Over Paris (1974): 8.2 - Rivette combines the playfulness of his fellow nouvelle vague buddies with an surrealistic take on moviewatching.
5. Zatôichi goyô-tabi (Zatoichi at Large) (1972): 6.8
6. Shin Zatôichi monogatari: Oreta tsue (Zatoichi in Desperation) (1972): 6.5 - Shintaro Katsu himself direct the grittiest darkest, or one could say most realistic, entry in the series. It surely is the only entry with a cumshot.
7. Die Marquise von O... (1976); 7.5 - Rohmer's only non-French movie suffers a bit from its low-budget, especially at the battle scenes in the beginning. But mostly is a simple economical but moral complex telling of the story.

Tati's final Hulot venture is his slowest paced and with a far lower gag ratio, however, it is still a magnificent achievement on its own terms as Tati expands on the automobile anxiety he earlier tapped into in M. Hulot's Holiday. The movements of several of the cars are very funny, and amusing bits include hats stored in spare tire places, though a walking on the dog gag remains the funniest bit.

And that's it for me this round, which means you only need 21 more movies in your next update to overtake me, 72a. ;) Thanks for hosting!

1. Le Distrait 6/10 I don’t enjoy Pierre Richard as much as some, but this was moderately entertaining.
2.Le Petit bougnat 6/10 The things I see for Isabelle Adjani. She was a teenager, about 14 or 15, playing a 13 year-old (13 and 1/2 in fact). It’s not tremendous, but it’s okay.
3. Sur un arbre perché (1971, Serge Korber) 6/10 The “joke” gets old really quickly, but the presence of Geraldine Chaplin was enough to make it worthwhile.
4. Sérieux comme le plaisir (1975, Robert Benayoun) 5.5/10 This is kind of a cheap film, but at least it has Jane Birkin and a small appearance from Serge Gainsbourg.
5. Piège (1970) - weird, experimental French film that I lost patience with over time, even though it was so short.
6. Lotte in Italia/Struggle in Italy - 1971 - One of Godard’s “boring” films was streaming on MUBI. I’ve been struggling to watch this for the past couple of weeks, but it’s dry. Finally, it was almost leaving MUBI, so I finished it. The dialogue is in Italian, and explained in French with a voiceover by Anne Wiazemsky.
7. In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni (1978) Triple (also TSPDT challenge) - Really boring essay film. :(
8. La chair de l'orchidée/ Flesh of the Orchid 1975 https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/f ... he-orchid/
9. Pourquoi pas! (Coline Serreau, 1977) 5/10

5. The Driver (Walter Hill, 1978)
6. Tinimbang ka ngunit kulang / Weighed But Found Wanting (Lino Brocka, 1974)
7. Frenzy (Alfred Hitchcock, 1972) (re-watch, probably 4th or so)
8. Le magnifique (Philippe de Broca, 1973)
9. Hair (Milos Forman, 1979) (1001-2000 list)
10. Mary Tyler Moore Season 5 Episodes 17-18 (1975)
11. Mary Tyler Moore Season 5 Episodes 19-20 (1975)
12. Mary Tyler Moore Season 5 Episodes 21-22 (1975)
13. Mary Tyler Moore Season 5 Episodes 23-24 (1975)
14. Un homme est mort / The Outside Man (Jacques Deray, 1972)
15. The Man Who Would Be King (John Huston, 1975) (3rd or 4th viewing)
16. Tout va bien (Jean-Luc Godard/Jean-Pierre Gorin, 1972) (1001-2000 list)
17. Time After Time (Nicholas Meyer, 1979) (8th viewing or so)
18. Paper Moon (Peter Bogdanovich, 1973)
19. Lady Oscar (Jacques Demy, 1979)
20. Hustle (Robert Aldrich, 1975)
21. Cousin Cousine (Jean-Claude Tacchella, 1975)

Nostalgia, memory...I feel like I've known about this film since shortly after it came out; was it reviewed on Siskel and Ebert I wonder? I was 10 when it premiered in the USA, and had no chance to see it, but did I see reviews? By the time the 1989 American remake came out I worked in a video store, and I remember this being one of our most-requested titles, we had it in 2 of the 3 stores and it kept moving around; perhaps it was out of print? But I never watched it until now. Too bad; while this isn't remarkable or anything, it's a really solid romantic comedy with a particular moral viewpoint - one that you might call selfish and kind at the same time - that I can't imagine translating perfectly to the American version. Marie-Christine Barraulx and Victor Lanoux are both very good as the married (to others) couple-to-be, but it's Marie-France Pisier who really steals the show as the flaky, neurotic wife of Lanoux. This strikes me as possibly having influenced Woody Allen in his late 70s to 80s period, particularly Hannah and Her Sisters.

22. Les valseuses / Going Places (Bertrand Blier, 1974)

And ya can't win 'em all. The good: the performances are all fine (especially Jeanne Moreau), it's well-shot, it has a nice road-movie lackadaisical feeling, but...it's so horribly misogynous and amoral that I really have a hard time caring much about the good things. Admittedly our two complete and utter assholes, Gerard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere, do seem to "grow up" or get a little less brutal over the course of the film - a little - but Blier seems to want us to like/sympathize with them, or at the very least tolerate them and accept their company throughout, and I guess at this point I can't do it. Maybe in 1974 France this was considered more acceptable?

Thanks fer the fine hosting 72!

Let's get it on...

The best part to this tale of a killer taking refuge in the house of the policeman who's both charged with hunting him down and married to the very woman the intruder saved from committing suicide comes from the interaction in the house setting between the three adults and the boy taken as a hostage. A moral quandary confronts all and Bachchan exhibits a suitably brooding anguish. Not quite a great film but an interesting addition to the home intruder category.

While I am happy to accept the win, I have a feeling that Ivan might be Moonlight to my La La Land. He hasn't been active since April 26. Can he still submit updates, or has he missed the deadline in your books?

I have experienced a few deadline issues myself in the past, but never with a tight race between 1st and 2nd place before.

You can take it easy, you won :)

It was over 24 hours since April ended in most countries when I posted that the Challenge was over. He and everyone else had plenty of time to post another update. I just hope he is okey and that he will be back soon :)
