14. K-19: The Widowmaker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2002) 7-/10
It is surprisingly bearing comparison with the 80s/90s submarine classics and the sequences of the reactor repair are quite tensed and suspenseful.

Image

15. On the Beat / Min jing gu shi (Ning Ying, 1995) 7-/10
Another nice naturalistic film by Ning Ying, this time about a local police station in Beijing, still lacks some kind of subtext for my taste.

Image

15. Romance (Catherine Breillat, 1999) 4/10
Could have been an interesting film without the mediocre dialogues, wooden acting and lazzy direction.

Image

16. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (Alison Klayman, 2012) 7/10
Good doc' on fight for freedom of speech in China and Ai Weiwei activism in the year 2000s.

Image

17. The Hidden Half / Nimeh-ye penhan (Tahmineh Milani, 2001) 5+/10
Fair attempt to depict the fate of a young left-wing activist in modern Iran hindered by bland direction and script.

Image
the f worldShow
1. Bhaji on the Beach (Gurinder Chadha, 1993) 6-/10
Seven English women of Indian descent confronted to social and cultural issues... wants to say too much and not too subtly

Image

2. Sauf le respect que je vous dois (Fabienne Godet, 2005) 5+/10
It borrows actors and social themes from the Dardenne but doesn't really succeed to make us care for any of the characters or events.

Image

3. Inferno / L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot (Ruxandra Medrea, Serge Bromberg, 2009) 8/10
Great doc' and what a film it could have been if Clouzot and Regianni had managed to finish it.

Image

4. Janis: Little Girl Blue (Amy Berg, 2015) 7/10
I have learned a few things and Janis Joplin's voice alone is well worth the doc'.

Image

5. Maigret: Night at the Crossroads (Sarah Harding, 2017) 5/10
The BBC adapted most famous French fictional investigator, Simenon's Maigret, with Rowan Atkinson in the role  Well, it doesn't work for me, it wants to be faithful to the book but nothing rings true from the Hungarian set to the lack of Atkinson's acting depth.

Image

6. Radiance / Hikari (Naomi Kawase, 2017) 8+/10
I loved this, best Kawase since Shara and maybe ever: gorgeous use of light, on the picture as much as an allegory of all these moments reaching out to memory before fading away with life. It could just have been a poetic tale of two beings finding each other, yet it is also a profund reflection on the role of a cinema-/pho-tographer.

Image

7. Wonder Woman (Patty Jenkins, 2017) 5+/10
Somewhere between refreshing and embarassing on how old fashioned it is in plot development. I didn't feel there was the slightest female director's touch in any of it, this is perhaps what parity is.

Image

8. Borders / Frontières (Appoline Traoré, 2017) 6/10
Four women travel by bus from Ivory Coast to Nigeria through Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin, teaming up to overcome all the -men- dangers of the journey: a little simplistic but still a good testimony of women conditions and insecurity in this part of the world.

Image

9. Proof (Jocelyn Moorhouse, 1991) 7/10
Good exploration of a blind man's paranoia; it could have been darker and less comedy at times.

Image

10. Going Away / Un beau dimanche (Nicole Garcia, 2011) 5/10
Acting is not really convincing and the script is too formulaic.

Image

11. Le jardin oublié: La vie et l'oeuvre d'Alice Guy-Blaché (Marquise Lepage, 1995) 7-/10
Documentary about Alice Guy, first woman to write, direct and produce films in the early age of cinema for Gaumont in Paris and later in the US with her own company, so modern and innovative yet almost forgotten.

Image

12. [61mins] Various shorts (Alice Guy, 1896-1905) 6/10

Image
Image

13. For Fun / Zhao Le (Ning Ying, 1993) 7/10
A recently retired Beijinger tries to form a group of amateur opera singers but personal interests are on the way. Good cinematography although I didn't get whether there was any intended political commentary behind it or it was only meant to be a true-to-life documentary.

1. Histórias que Só Existem Quando Lembradas - Julia Murat - 5/10 - Not going to lie. This was really boring. There were a couple of nice moments. But the younger woman lived in a universe where men were allowed to have vices, but women weren’t. But they were allowed to have sewing for a vice. What joy.
2. Red Riding Hood - Catherine Hardwicke - 4/10 - The story was such a mess. On one hand, it seems cool to substitute a wolf for a werewolf. But the pacing was off/slow. The actors were good, but Amanda Seyfried basically served the purpose of being “pretty” and that’s it.
3. Motherhood - Katherine Dieckmann - 6/10 - 4.6 rating on IMDB explains why not a lot of people have seen it - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/motherhood/

An odd film. I didn't mind the jumping between Julie and Julia segments, but I found the Julie part more compelling (writing a blog to have structure in one's life; typing into a void, not knowing if you're being read, like I am doing right now), however, Meryl Streep absolutely steals the film acting-wise, which makes her Julia part of the film kind of more interesting to view.

Somewhat intriguing neo-noir that would have benefited from focusing more on the main characters (a bedridden gossiper and her much younger husband) and less on the side characters who wish to turn their local bar into a strip joint, only they have no strippers. The film has a great jazzy music score that evokes a real noir atmosphere, but the rest of the film is simply passable with potential for more.

14. Zacharovannaya Desna / The Enchanted Desna (Yuliya Solntseva, 1964)
15. The Party (Sally Potter, 2017) (cinema)
16. The Hitch-Hiker (Ida Lupino, 1953) (re-watch)
17. Povest plamennykh let / The Story of the Flaming Years (Yuliya Solntseva, 1961)

The middle part of the loose trilogy that also encompasses Poema o more and Zacharovannaya Desna, all based on writings by the director's late husband Aleksandr Dovzhenko, memories and reveries and stories of his Ukranian childhood, young adulthood, and World War II. This is a bit more overly propagandistic than the other two I think, and there are also some elements of the narrative (such as it is) near the ending that I didn't really comprehend - poor subtitles and sometimes poor image quality probably had something to do with this, but also perhaps some culturally specific elements. At any rate this has all the virtues of the other films - simply amazing photography and a vastness of scale that put humans as small insects against the power of nature, hugely impressive camerawork including a couple of exceptional tracking shots, an early one that zooms out of a doorway and up and down a hillside through groups of people. I probably like this about as much as Poema and a little less than Desna but in any case watching the rest of Solntseva's films is now a real priority.

18. The Bigamist (Ida Lupino, 1953) (re-watch)

Third viewing. This remains my favorite of Lupino's films, by a slim margin over her first, Not Wanted. Like that film this is an issues film with noirish elements, and like that and most of the director's work it could have benefited from "A" picture status and a longer running time to explore the titular issue at a bit more length, and also from a stronger ending that didn't try to moralize or explain - though I will say on this watching I was struck by the ending seeming more muted than I'd previously felt, perhaps because I've now seen all of Lupino's films. But this benefits from four exceptional actors in the leads - Lupino and Joan Fontaine as the two wives of well-meaning bigamist Edmond O'Brien, and Edmund Gwenn as a fairly hard-edged adoption services man who harbors his own, never revealed regrets and comes to at least a little sympathy for the difficult situation. I like the view of sunny yet unfriendly Los Angeles here, and the contrast between working-class and fairly desperate Lupino and upwardly mobile Fontaine, with O'Brien seemingly a bridge between two class worlds. When this was made Fontaine was married to co-writer/producer Collier Young - who had previously been married to Lupino! Perhaps it's these personal stories at the back of the matter that gives this film it's extra resonance.

19. Dance, Girl, Dance (Dorothy Arzner, 1940)

A sort-of musical (mostly dance) from the one successful female director in the sound era who preceded Lupino, this is basically the story of good girl Maureen O'Hara, struggling to be a serious dancer, and her friend not-so-good-girl Lucille Ball who is willing to take any job to get ahead, and their romances with Louis Hayward - still in love with ex-wife Virginia Field - and Ralph Bellamy. It's nothing special as a story, not much that you haven't seen before if you've seen some backstage musicals or rom-coms from this era, but the cast is pretty excellent and the dances are fun if not exactly Astaire and Rogers.

20. Voskhozhdenie / The Ascent (Larisa Shepitko, 1977) (re-watch)

I wasn't actually sure I had seen this before, but I had it listed, and I'm pretty sure that I saw it as a double feature with Krylya (which I do remember, though not that well) at the Film Center in Chicago in the late 90s. Most likely I saw both of them in the evening after work and slept through most of the second film; that kind of thing used to happen to me all the time, even during great films. Anyways I remembered bits and pieces while watching, particularly the scene with the village headman and much of the last half hour which also very much recalls Paths of Glory. At any rate this is an extraordinary film fully deserving of it's high rep and I don't know how much I have to say about it that's new or interesting. It's certainly one of the great war films and given that Shepitko's husband Elem Klimov made one of the few war films that might be better, I have to wonder just how much the ghosts of a war neither experienced as an adult stayed with them through their lives. I suppose the signal element that struck me throughout was how real the feeling of cold and desolation were, much more so than most films set in winter or winter war; and the way in which our main protagonist Rybak develops over the course of the film is also remarkably real.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Hiya Ale

While you're here, I just thought I should mention that I have read your responses and reviews on the weekly thread. :) I have just been too busy/lazy lately to type up a thoughtful reply (yet). -_- I'm glad that you liked The Night Before though; my kind of crazy comedy.

Angelina and Brad play a couple here who rekindle the sparks in their strained relationship through a mutual love of... voyeurism. At first, I thought the film was based on their own relationship tensions (at least I recall reading something about that at the time) but with the direction the film goes in, that would be a little wtf if true. In any case, this a deliberately paced enough affair that I can understand the dissent, but I didn't mind the film myself, even if it didn't exactly wow me.

18. My Twentieth Century / Az én XX. századom (Ildikó Enyedi, 1989) 6+/10
Nice and inventive B&W visuals, messy narrative that gradually pulled me off.

Image

19. Erotique (Lizzie Borden, Clara Law, Ana Maria Magalhães, Monika Treut,, 1994) 4/10
Four segments about sexuality shot by a different woman director: embarassing they had so little interesting to say and to show on screen.

Image

20. Lady Bird (Greta Gerwig, 2017) 7-/10
There are only a few emotional and powerful scenes that elevate the film just above the usual American middle class coming of age high school rehash.

Image

21. The Skin / La Pelle (Liliana Cavani, 1981) 5+/10
Strange film, it seems the director wants to say a lot on the suffering from the Italian during WWI from various occupants but only manages to make an offbeat comedy that she tries to counter occasionally with gruesome violence.

Image

22. Raw / Grave (Julia Ducournau, 2017) 8+/10
Excellent ! Captivating as a horror thriller while telling a lot on young adults discovering sexuality and life out of the protection of the family circle. Also, great visuals and music.

Image

23. The Girl (Sande Zeig, 2000) 5-/10
A lesbian tulmutuous love story mixed up with a crime plot, rather well shot and directed but with a terribly bad written scipt.

Image

24. The Illinois Parables (Deborah Stratman, 2016) 8-/10
Multifaceted, experimental doc about events and characters that marked the histoiry of Illinois, US: nicely crafted and well supported by a melancholic soundtrack.

Image
the f worldShow

Image

Image

Very competently made for sure, but as a narrative, this would have been much more interesting with the title Broken. Zamperini's experiences are certainly quite harrowing, but the fact that he never once considers giving up or caving in leads to zero character progression. I think I prefer By the Sea to this, even though Unbroken looks better with Deakins generating some amazing shots (looming shadow of Jap war ship, etc).

Radha Mitchell looks gorgeous here, but to be honest, I couldn't care less about her character here. I don't know if it is a case of the film overplaying its hand by trying to be about photography as art, and about drug addiction, as well as about latent lesbianism, but the film really didn't work for me. I sort of left the film feeling nothing.

Interesting film about a subject rarely portrayed on screen - an intersex teenager raised as a girl wondering which gender she should choose. The way the film plays out from both her perspective and her father's dilutes her struggle a little, but the actor who plays her father is excellent and he of course has his own struggles, trying to act in his child's best interests.

I pretty indifferent to Personal Velocity and almost didn't make time for this earlier Rebecca Miller feature since it wasn't on an Official List, so this film really stunned me. It sounded interesting enough, what with a superstitious young girl mistaking her mother's mental illness for the work of the Devil, but the film does all that and more. It truly places us in her world where she sees visions of the Devil and looks upon strangers as good/bad angels. Real haunting ending too.

I digged the hell out of that one - I thought it was a great portrayal of the struggles many intersexed individuals face, and exposed those struggles to a wider audience. I also liked that the film, while certainly not happy, didn't end in an overly depressing way.

10. … dann leben sie noch heute – Die Kinder von Golzow (Barbara & Winfried Junge, 2007) 8/10

"In all these years, nothing really sensational has happened to these children... Yet the film in its totality is truly sensational." (Süddeutsche Zeitung (Munich), April 15, 1995)

I've made it to the end. The Children of Golzow project, spanning 20 films, 42 hours and 46 years follows East German children in the small town Golzow from their first day of school in 1961 until their 50s in the 2000s. During this time they experienced the end of East Germany, the rough move from "socialism" to capitalism, got married, divorced, remarried, had kids, saw their parents pass away, moved away from Golzow, built houses, went on vacations and some even passed away themselves before the project was over. Film outlives both people and their country, it seems.

For me watching, seeing so much time pass in front of me becomes a path into self-reflection of my own life but also an important reminder of the power of cinema and the way it captures time. From one scene to the next in the later films the film might move two or three decades back and forth in the space of mere minutes, in the process showing how protagonists have changed so much (or so little). For film technology or documentary history buffs it also shows a very interesting evolution of the documentary film from a more observational style with over 60 kilos heavy Arriflex 35mm cameras to participatory style with handheld 35mm and finally to video. There's 8mm and 16mm footage too – even four different coloring methods used over the decades!

The greatest strength of the project in total however is how it tells history of ordinary people. Most history writing up to recent time has had a "Great Man" narrative, this is also true for most popular history written today which focuses on extraordinary people – genuises and fools. Not often enough do we get the chance to dig deep into how ordinary lives were like, how it was like to actually live the day-by-day as a person without great privileges. It is even rarer that this kind of "history writing" happens on film. This being said, from an entertainment perspective The Children of Golzow probably went on too long for most. This was also the sentiment of a teacher who was in the film, now in his 80s, that I met in Golzow one cold January evening while waiting for the train back to Berlin. Although I find this film to be very interesting and works like a fine wine, I completely get why I am only the second person on Letterboxd to log the 20th and final film. Still, I'd heartily recommend watching as much as possible of the "Film-Reihe". If 42 hours is too much, the combined nine hours of the award-winning Lebensläufe (1980) and the first film made after East Germany Drehbuch: Die Zeiten (1992) are some of the finest hours of documentary and "visual history" ever made.

26. Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)

Wife and her best friend rented this tonight when they were hanging out. It was reasonably fun and cute. I have seen the other two, and this was a nice continuation of the series, though it was nothing particularly special. There was decent singing and fun to it, but not a lot of substance. There were a few cool shots, like some of the overhead sequences and the stage scenes, but nothing to speak of. It was a fun watch if you happen to like the series.

And that'll be it for me - I don't have any other films lined up for this. Thanks for hosting, Allison!

4. A Wrinkle in Time (2018) Ava DuVernay - 6/10 - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/a ... time-2018/

13. Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq - co-director: Ellen Goosenberg Kent 6/10
14. Journey Into Dyslexia (Susan Raymond) 6/10
15. Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 - Ellen Goosenberg Kent 6/10
16. Madame - Amanda Sthers - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/madame-2017/
17. Unforgettable - Denise Di Novi - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/u ... able-2017/ - Thanks to everyone who watched this for the challenge. It made me want to see it out.
18. She's Beautiful When She's Angry - Mary Dore -
19. Don't Blink – Robert Frank - Laura Israel - played on MUBI -
20. Outside In - Lynn Shelton - review to come on Letterboxd

Man Smart (Woman Smarter)Show
1. Estiu 1993 / Summer 1993 (Carla Simón, 2017)
2. Visages villages / Faces Places (Agnès Varda / JR, 2017)
3. Desperately Seeking Susan (Susan Seidelman, 1985)

6. Bright Star (Jane Campion, 2009)
7. Not Wanted (Ida Lupino/Elmer Clifton, 1949)
8. Never Fear aka The Young Lovers (Ida Lupino, 1949)
9. Outrage (Ida Lupino, 1950) (re-watch)
10. Somewhere (Sofia Coppola, 2010)
11. Valley Girl (Martha Coolidge, 1983)
12. Hard, Fast and Beautiful (Ida Lupino, 1951)
13. Poema o more / Poem of the Sea (Yuliya Solntseva, 1958)
14. Zacharovannaya Desna / The Enchanted Desna (Yuliya Solntseva, 1964)
15. The Party (Sally Potter, 2017) (cinema)
16. The Hitch-Hiker (Ida Lupino, 1953) (re-watch)
17. Povest plamennykh let / The Story of the Flaming Years (Yuliya Solntseva, 1961)
18. The Bigamist (Ida Lupino, 1953) (re-watch)
19. Dance, Girl, Dance (Dorothy Arzner, 1940)
20. Voskhozhdenie / The Ascent (Larisa Shepitko, 1977) (re-watch)
21. The Heartbreak Kid (Elaine May, 1972)

I expected good things from this - having loved the director's A New Leaf and Mikey and Nicky, but I was still unprepared for just how great and how audacious - Rosenbaum calls it "transgressive" which might be accurate - this film about a Jewish New York salesman (Charles Grodin in the best performance I've seen from him) who abandons his newlywed wife (played by the director's daughter Jeannie Berlin in a deservedly Oscar-nominated performance) to pursue the utterly WASPISH bikini babe (Cybill Shepherd) he sees on the beach in Florida, doing absolutely anything and showing an utter soullessness and pure narcissism in the process. This is in many ways similar material to that found in certain other Jewish comedy directors' works - Woody Allen, Jerry Lewis and Albert Brooks all come to mind - dealing with the sometimes-subtle but always repressed need on the part of some Jewish men to find their ways into the gentile world regardless of who they hurt - but Grodin's portrayal is a particular kind of monster that nonetheless comes off as almost totally original, the fast-talker who is so desperate to lie and shmooze his way through life that he's no longer even capable of understanding what he's doing or why. The ending sequence, mirroring the opening wedding, lets us know the direction he's likely to head in for the rest of his life - but he remains blithely uncomprehending. Absolute genius and one of the best comedies of the 70s, or maybe ever.

Thanks for hosting allison; wish I could have gotten to more but as it is I think this poll probably has my highest average rating for any I've competed in, and with only one film out of the 21 that I actually disliked.

A poetic journey through Japanese folklore and culture that sometimes looks a little too much like a tourist photobook.

Image

27. Angry Inuk (Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, 2016) 6+/10
A doc about Inuit people from Canada lobbying to lift bans for seals hunting and derived products: interesting view from a different cultural angle than usual, as well as for the difficulty to get minority voices heard by various governmental bodies including foreign.

Image

28. I Believe in Unicorns (Leah Meyerhoff, 2014) 7+/10
More my kind of Lady Bird, great use of light and cinematography with inventive dream-like sequences.

Image

Image

1. Seventeen Moments of Spring (part 1)
2. Seventeen Moments of Spring (part 2)
3. Zolushka (1947)

I'll get around to watching the rest of it over the next week or so. I got distracted by the Kholms films.
and I meant to watch Lucrecia Martel's films but I'll watch them in April for sure.

edit:
