Oddly enough, just before I watched this I'd been reading William Stafford - whose best-known poem, "Traveling through the dark," was referenced early on in the film.

I really liked the idea of teenager so obsessed with the romanticism of Spanish movies that she'd watch them without subs and who dreams of making her single mum happy again. And as this character, Fairuza Balk is great. The rest of the film is not. I found both Balk's sister and mother to be pretty bland characters and I kept wishing that the film would re-focus on Balk, which it didn't, or at least not very often. James Brolin is great in a bit role though.

23. Salesman (1969) <-- Bronze on the "100 Documentary Films..." list

This is my 3rd Maysles film (this month, actually), and my favorite. A documentary about some of the last traveling salesmen out there, peddling gold-embossed illustrated bibles. The documentary was well-made and put together, conveying the desperation and ridiculousness of what they're doing. But it failed to get me over the hump to care about the subjects of the documentary, and I found myself actively rooting against the salesmen.

The film that Call Me By Your Name wishes that it was. A touching gay romance in which the build-up and bonding is all conveyed through the subtlest of looks and stares rather than overt dialogue. I definitely preferred the film in drama more than comedy mode (a constantly drunk teen neighbour is an iffy constant source of comic relief) but all the characters here were generally quite endearing and the sourced songs are simply divine - very well used throughout.

Nice blend of comedy and drama, though far more successful in comedy mode. Film involves a US couple in France with funny lost in translation bits and pieces as everyone converses in French (which she can understand, but he can't). Adam Goldberg is clearly channeling Woody Allen here and does very good with the role. Julie Delpy is slightly less dynamic as the female love interest but her casting of her actual father as her father in the film is great.

One of those films where the concept is more interesting than the film itself. Told from the perspective of a group of women would-be settlers, we only hear bits and pieces of muddled conversation as the men on their expedition discuss what to do if they are indeed lost. I suppose the trouble is that I felt distanced from not only the men but the women here too. The film does look great, shot on location etc, and Bruce Greenwood rocks, but this would be my least favourite Kelly Reichardt film so far.

30. You Are Not I (1983)

Pretty interesting sort of experimental narrative film involving a woman who manages to flee her mental asylum and unsettle her sister by sitting around, doing nothing upon returning home. The juice of the film comes from her often poetic voiceover narration, the which of which shows her to have a beating heart and quite an active mind beyond what others want to say about her.

6. They (Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, 2017) 6/10
Decent mumblecore on a teenager with Gender Identity Disorder. Not a fan of the style, but it gets extra points for being so normalizing.

7. Und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind... Die Kinder von Golzow - Das Ende der unendlichen Geschichte (Barbara & Winfried Junge, 2006) 6/10

Unless the final 4,5 hours of the Golzow series is fantastic I can't say I heartily recommend the 2000s Golzow films. This film doesn't introduce any new ideas or ways of dealing with the longitudinal aspects which make them special. Watching these 4,5 hours became a bit of a slog because it's so linear in use of old footage. There's a lot of new footage here, but not much is being done with it even with the fact that it has been 2-4 decades between different footage. Instead the film follows the same recipe as the other films in the 2000s. Lebensläufe (1980) and Drehbuch: Die Zeiten (1992) are amazing in how they jump in time and should be watched by anyone who enjoyed the Up-series by Michael Apted. Several of the single-portrait films of the 90s are underrated and special also.

13. For Fun / Zhao Le (Ning Ying, 1993) 7/10
A recently retired Beijinger tries to form a group of amateur opera singers but personal interests are on the way. Good cinematography although I didn't get whether there was any intended political commentary behind it or it was only meant to be a true-to-life documentary.

Image
the f worldShow
1. Bhaji on the Beach (Gurinder Chadha, 1993) 6-/10
Seven English women of Indian descent confronted to social and cultural issues... wants to say too much and not too subtly

Image

2. Sauf le respect que je vous dois (Fabienne Godet, 2005) 5+/10
It borrows actors and social themes from the Dardenne but doesn't really succeed to make us care for any of the characters or events.

Image

3. Inferno / L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot (Ruxandra Medrea, Serge Bromberg, 2009) 8/10
Great doc' and what a film it could have been if Clouzot and Regianni had managed to finish it.

Image

4. Janis: Little Girl Blue (Amy Berg, 2015) 7/10
I have learned a few things and Janis Joplin's voice alone is well worth the doc'.

Image

5. Maigret: Night at the Crossroads (Sarah Harding, 2017) 5/10
The BBC adapted most famous French fictional investigator, Simenon's Maigret, with Rowan Atkinson in the role  Well, it doesn't work for me, it wants to be faithful to the book but nothing rings true from the Hungarian set to the lack of Atkinson's acting depth.

Image

6. Radiance / Hikari (Naomi Kawase, 2017) 8+/10
I loved this, best Kawase since Shara and maybe ever: gorgeous use of light, on the picture as much as an allegory of all these moments reaching out to memory before fading away with life. It could just have been a poetic tale of two beings finding each other, yet it is also a profund reflection on the role of a cinema-/pho-tographer.

Image

7. Wonder Woman (Patty Jenkins, 2017) 5+/10
Somewhere between refreshing and embarassing on how old fashioned it is in plot development. I didn't feel there was the slightest female director's touch in any of it, this is perhaps what parity is.

Image

8. Borders / Frontières (Appoline Traoré, 2017) 6/10
Four women travel by bus from Ivory Coast to Nigeria through Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin, teaming up to overcome all the -men- dangers of the journey: a little simplistic but still a good testimony of women conditions and insecurity in this part of the world.

Image

9. Proof (Jocelyn Moorhouse, 1991) 7/10
Good exploration of a blind man's paranoia; it could have been darker and less comedy at times.

Image

10. Going Away / Un beau dimanche (Nicole Garcia, 2011) 5/10
Acting is not really convincing and the script is too formulaic.

Image

11. Le jardin oublié: La vie et l'oeuvre d'Alice Guy-Blaché (Marquise Lepage, 1995) 7-/10
Documentary about Alice Guy, first woman to write, direct and produce films in the early age of cinema for Gaumont in Paris and later in the US with her own company, so modern and innovative yet almost forgotten.

Image

12. [61mins] Various shorts (Alice Guy, 1896-1905) 6/10

24. Atomic Homefront (2017, Rebecca Cammisa)

This was a "pleasantly surprised it counted" entry for this challenge, in that I watched it for its content and then noticed after the fact it was directed by a woman. This documentary film covers the effects on a community in suburban St. Louis, MO where radioactive nuclear weapons waste has been dumped. I thought this film struck a nice balance between fly-on-the-wall style and explanation cards. The cards helped provide enough context to understand the scenes, but still let you appreciate what came next. I thought the tension built nicely throughout the entire film. Though the ending was entirely predictable (gee - the government did nothing?!?), the slow burn of "how much evidence/absurdity can they amass?" question kept me engaged.

05. As Boas Maneiras, by Marco Dutra & Juliana Rojas (2017) 7,5/10

A great variation of the classic werewolf theme... Both funny and scary, always enjoyable.

06. Tous les garçons et les filles de leur age... Us go home, by Claire Denis (1994) 8/10

Charming and very well told. Silences are more revealing in that film than dialogues...

Weekend at Bernie's is one of those comedies that I enjoy watching every couple of years and this sounded like a promising, modern take on the basic premise. The pacing/focus of the film is totally off though (the guy doesn't die until a third of the way in, for instance) and the filmmakers are too obsessed with 'quirky' vulgarities, from foot jobs to adult diaper stuff, to get the most out of the idea of having to pretend that a dead person is still alive.

1. Histórias que Só Existem Quando Lembradas - Julia Murat - 5/10 - Not going to lie. This was really boring. There were a couple of nice moments. But the younger woman lived in a universe where men were allowed to have vices, but women weren’t. But they were allowed to have sewing for a vice. What joy.
2. Red Riding Hood - Catherine Hardwicke - 4/10 - The story was such a mess. On one hand, it seems cool to substitute a wolf for a werewolf. But the pacing was off/slow. The actors were good, but Amanda Seyfried basically served the purpose of being “pretty” and that’s it.
3. Motherhood - Katherine Dieckmann - 6/10 - 4.6 rating on IMDB explains why not a lot of people have seen it - https://letterboxd.com/allisoncm/film/motherhood/

25. Nowhere in Africa (2001)

This was a great story about a German Jewish family during WW2 who fled to Kenya to escape the Nazis, and how they adapted to life in Africa. They contrasted well the ease with which the young daughter adjusted with the denial of the mother and how she was always clinging to her past. The story was paced well and you got to see some great evolution in the characters. I thought some of the romantic elements were unresolved, and I wanted to see those fleshed out. But a really enjoyable watch.

I thought it was pretty cool how accurately the animation team made the characters here physically resemble the actors voicing them. That said, the Jaws spoof/Dreamworks logo subversion precredits scene is probably the biggest highlight of the film.

If slow to begin, this is overall a satisfying little film about changing character dynamics, power relationships and so forth under changing circumstances. Giancarlo Giannini's bug-eyed performances got on my nerves a bit, but the dialogue here really sparkles, and - for better or worse - I am now morbidly curious about the Madonna version...

I saw that in the cinema new, and it was an amazing experience for the visuals... but yeah, it didn't impress me as a narrative. Saw it again probably 10 years ago (mediocre video copy) and wasn't any more impressed. Dorota Segda is pretty stunning, that's worth mentioning, but yeah... to me it registers in memory as only eye candy. And only worth seeing if you can get a very high quality copy I think.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Dorota Segda is pretty stunning, that's worth mentioning, but yeah... to me it registers in memory as only eye candy. And only worth seeing if you can get a very high quality copy I think.
yea, glad there is/was bluray release
